LONDON REFORM PEKINGESE ASSOCIATION

Open Show

Saturday 7 February 2026

Many thanks to this wonderfully friendly club for the invitation to judge their open show at Addlestone where a lovely entry awaited me. I have been fascinated by this breed all the way back to 1985 when I was in the stands at Earls Court watching Joyce Mitchell pilot Ch Micklee Roc’s Ru Ago to Reserve Best in Show at Crufts. Ever since that day I have followed them with great interest and I was lucky enough to become a Pekingese owner before the pandemic. Their ancient history, their unique construction, their wonderful faces and their amazing, aloof personalities captivate me. They are a complex breed to judge but this makes it even more enjoyable and it was a pleasure to have some top quality Pekes in the entry. As well as the quality adults, the fact that there were two such outstanding puppies fighting it out for Best Puppy in Show must augur well for the future.

BPB (1,0)

1st Chng’s Abeaupekes Phoenix Glamour an exquisite young lady to start the day. Beautiful head proportions with well placed, correctly shaped eyes giving a lovely expression. Broad, flat skull with well set ears. Pleasing forehand construction with elbows close to body and chest developing nicely. Level topline. Well made quarters and firm hocks. Super temperament and really made the most of herself on the move.

MPD (1,1)

1st RBD & BPIS Waters’ Pekehuis The Alchemist he may be a baby but he is one with so much promise. I thought he was outstanding. Beautifully headed with a broad, shallow face. Flat skull between well set ears of correct size. Well placed facial features giving a wholly typical expression. Lovely bone. Correctly made in front and with well developed chest and neat elbows. Level topline. Correctly set tail. Pleasing overall body proportions. Firm, well muscled quarters. Went with characteristic roll and absolutely sound. Lovely temperament. He is the one that I would have taken home.

JD (2,0)

1st Morley’s Londer Black Infinity at Lizlanmor handsome black with very pleasing head properties. Well placed features giving a typical expression. Well made forehand with good bone. Sufficient lay of shoulder and neat elbows. Well developed chest. Level topline and well set tail. Quarters well muscled, hocks firm. Very pleasing on the move going soundly and typically.

2nd Small’s Swaggerboot The Rocket presents a handsome overall picture of good proportion and good breed type. Head has many pleasing qualities and is typical in expression. Pleasing forehand and good bone. Could not quite match the winner on the move.

ND (2,0)

1st Cole’s Yakee King of the Kop handsome chap with broad, shallow head and well placed features. Typical expression. Lovely bone and well made front. Level topline. Stands on decent quarters. Moved soundly and characteristically.

2nd Chng’s Jadape Little Red Corvette very pleasing for overall type and balance. Decent head proportions, well placed eyes of correct shape and colour giving typical expression. Level topline. Not quite as good in forehand and hindquarter angulation as the winner.

GD (1,0)

1st Clifton’s Hemmingsway’s Marley at Clifcastle pleasing overall head proportions with broad, shallow skull. Well set ears of correct size. Well placed eyes. Correctly made forehand with well developed chest and neat elbows. Level topline. Picked up heavy. Would have liked him slightly firmer in hock.

OD (3,2)

1st & BD Morley & Hitchcock’s Lizlanmor Declaration handsome, mature male and while I wouldn’t want him any bigger, he still retains unmistakeable quality and he is blessed with a great show temperament. Broad and shallow in head, flat between the ears which are well set. Well made front and shoulder with neat elbows and well developed chest. Good overall proportions in body. Level topline. Decent quarters. Moved soundly. He was good value for best dog today. I just preferred the expressions of the bitches when it came to the in show awards.

MPB (4,1)

1st & RBPIS Smith & Milligan-Bott’s Zhaqqari Valentina exquisite baby with a glorious head and expression. Beautifully made throughout with correctly made forehand and hindquarters. Oozing quality and type. Correct body proportions, excellent overall balance. Level topline. Well set tail. Fantastic show temperament and confident, sound, typical mover. Gave the outstanding dog puppy, who was slightly more mature on the day, a real run for his money when it came to BPIS.

2nd Cole’s Dragden Peony attractive black of pleasing overall proportions. Typical expression with well placed eyes of correct shape and colour. Would have liked her slightly flatter in skull. Level topline and well set tail. Pleasing hindquarters. Still has plenty of developing to do in forehand. Confident mover.

3rd Dixon & Penman’s Dragden Petal

PB (4,1)

1st Morley’s Shantallah Savanna at Lizlanmor pleasing head with broad, shallow skull, flat between the well set ears which I would have liked a little smaller. Well placed eyes giving wholly typical expression. Correct nose and broad nostrils. Well made through the forehand with good ribbing and neat elbows. Level topline and well made quarters. Another with an excellent show temperament who really made the most of herself on the move.

2nd Dixon & Penman’s Dragden Periwinkle typey black of good overall proportion. Head is coming on nicely and she has a typical expression. Could do with being a bit flatter in skull. Level topline, correctly set tail and quarters developing well. Just a baby so still has plenty of maturing to do through the forehand and will fill out more in chest. Happy show temperament. Moved confidently.

3rd Cole’s D Peony

JB (1,0)

1st Small’s Swaggerboat Miss Florence broad, shallow skull. Nice and flat between well set ears of correct size. Typical expression from well placed eyes. Well ribbed up and well boned. Well laid shoulders but elbows could have been a bit neater. Correct overall body proportions. Quarters correctly angulated and with firm hocks. Could have been a tad firmer in topline. Moved soundly with characteristic roll.

NB (2,1)

1st Clifton’s Lizlanmor Queenie Panini at Clifcastle very pretty and full of type. Broad, shallow, flat skull. Open nostrils and firm underjaw. Well placed eyes giving typical expression. Well made forehand with well developed chest and neat elbows. Level topline, relatively short in body. Well set tail. Decent hindquarters. Super temperament and really made the most of herself on the move going soundly and typically.

GB (3,1)

1st Cole’s Dragden Charity good head qualities with broad, shallow skull and very typical expression from well placed eyes of correct shape and colour. Firm in underjaw. Soundly made forehand but could have slightly more development and width of chest. Level topline and well set tail. Would not want her any longer. Well made quarters. Lovely temperament and sound mover.

2nd Dixon & Penman’s Dragden Faith my notes say ‘very similar to winner’ which I now see is not surprising since they are littermates. Very similar in head qualities with typical expression. Good overall proportions. Level topline and well made behind. Could do with a bit more width and development between her front legs. Moved soundly.

PGB (2,1)

1st Dixon & Penman’s D Faith

LB (5,2)

1st & BIS Benson’s Chisprite’s Cracker beautifully presented with a coat that she wore well and which enhanced her many virtues. I thought she was brimful of unexaggerated breed type and I loved her for it. Beautiful head of correct balance and proportion, wholly typical in expression. Very well made through the front and shoulder with well developed chest and neat elbows. Level topline and well set tail. Relatively short in body with shapely waist. Well muscled quarters and firm hocks. Moved very soundly and with typical roll. Characteristically aloof and full of quality. A very deserving BIS winner.

2nd Morley & Hitchcock’s Shardlow Come On Over to Lizlanmor no disgrace to be second here, another of excellent type with very pleasing qualities in her broad, shallow head. Very well made front assembly with well developed chest and neat elbows. Level topline and well set tail. Well presented and with a super temperament. Moved soundly but without quite the roll of the winner.

3rd Dixon & Penman’s Dragden Hope

VD/B (2,1)

1st BVIS & RBIS Paradise’s Pekehuis Scarlett with Shardlow another who was absolutely full of quality and type. I thought her head properties were excellent and she had a really typical, aloof expression from very well placed, correctly shaped eyes. Broad nostrils. Firm in underjaw. Absolutely sound in front with well slung chest, correctly laid shoulders and neat elbows. Firm in topline, well set tail. Relatively short in body and very shapely. Well made hindquarters and the firmest of hocks. Outstanding temperament. Moved with complete soundness and characteristic roll. There were some really lovely bitches here today but I thought she was excellent value for RBB and also RBIS.
