Goyt Valley Gundog Society

Judge’s Report: English Setters, German Wirehaired Pointers, Irish Red & White Setters, Clumber Spaniels, Irish Water Spaniels

Thank you to the Society for the invitation to judge at their well-run & friendly Premier Open Show. Such a pity that there were no GWPs or Clumbers on the day, but these things happen and as always I appreciated the entries. My biggest thanks go to all the exhibitors who brought their lovely dogs for my opinion. It was a real pleasure and a great privilege to judge them.

ENGLISH SETTERS

PUPPY (3 entries, 1 absent)

1st Schoneville’s BALVENIE SHONA, well-boned 9 mths Tri B, lovely shape to head with depth to muzzle, dark eye & sweet expression, already has plenty of depth to her brisket & strength in couplings, strong neck, shoulders well-laid with good return of upper arm, well-sprung ribs, well-developed hindquarters with ample width to thigh, well-bent stifle without being overdone, long hip to hock, movement was rather uncoordinated initially, but the more she settled the better she went, BPIB

2nd McConnell & Blaze’s BALVENIE GLEN LYON, 9 mths O/B B, slightly finer-boned than her litter sister, pretty head with rounded skull & enough length to muzzle, good width to forechest, shoulders sufficiently laid back, brisket deep & ribs well-sprung, well-coupled, like her sister has strength over hindquarters with width to thigh & well-bent stifle, good length hip to hock, happy & full of mischief at her first show, will benefit from more training & being moved at a faster pace

JUNIOR (3, 1 absent)

1st B Shona

2nd Stead’s BONDGATE MISS MELODRAMATIC OF SETTAVISTA JW, elegant 15 mths B/B built on lighter lines than 1st, feminine & balanced head which was long & lean, excellent reach of neck, sufficient layback of shoulder & good length of upper arm, enough forechest & bone, deep enough in brisket, good spring of rib, slightly longer in back than 1st, well-built & shaped hindquarters with well-bent stifle, ample length to first & second thighs, moved out well in profile, just a little untidy behind today

LIMIT (1)

1st Stead’s RAVENSETT ILLUSIONIST OF SETTAVISTA, medium-sized 2 yrs B/B D, pleasing unexaggerated appearance & good bone, liked his masculine head for balance, strength & depth to muzzle, long & strong neck leading to well-laid back shoulders, sufficient return of upper arm, brisket deep, well-sprung ribs, short coupled, strong thigh, correct well-bent stifle, moved steadily & true, not quite the rear drive of BOB winner & slightly longer in back, had there been a rosette he would have been RBOB

OPEN (3, 2 absent)

PUPPY (2 entries)

1st Tattershall’s ALANEA SUMMER LEGACY, 11 mths B, athletic appearance with enough bone & substance for her age, sweet feminine head with good breadth to skull & squareness to muzzle, good stop, pleasing round eye which was dark brown in colour, moderately long neck leading to well-laid shoulders, good width in front, deep brisket with good spring of ribs, short enough in couplings, firm in back, well-bent stifle, liked her shapely hindquarters & width in her thigh, moved steadily, had there been a rosette would have been RBOB

2nd Hargreaves’ ALANEA SKYLARK, 11 mths B, similar athletic outline to 1st albeit slightly finer all through at present, lovely balance to her feminine head with good stop & the darkest of round eyes giving her a beautiful expression, a little narrower in front than 1st, moderately long neck, well-angulated front assembly, still developing in body, like her sister has well-made hindquarters with well-bent stifles, sound & steady mover, just needs more training & time to fill her frame

JUNIOR (2 entries)

1st Tattershall’s ALANEA PENNINE WAY, 11 mths D, more forward in development with good bone, pleasing picture of power & athleticism, balanced proportions to head, broad skull & deep muzzle, correctly-shaped dark brown eyes, charming expression, slight arch to reachy muscular neck, shoulders sufficiently well-laid, excellent return & length of upper arm, ample forechest, strong & deep all through body, well-sprung ribs, short-coupled, well-developed & well-angulated hindquarters, moved soundly with drive & exuberance, flying his tail initially, but much better once settled, BOB, BPIB & later RBPIS, congratulations

1st Bradley’s NYLLAUP OREGON SUNSTONE, strongly-built & compact 2 yrs D, has matured well since I last judged him, still full of character with an ever-wagging tail, masculine head with domed skull & long fairly square muzzle, eye dark enough, strong neck leading to well-constructed front assembly, plenty of forechest, deep in brisket with big ribs, strong couplings, stifles well-bent, well-made hindquarters, moved soundly on a good stride, preferred width of thigh & tightness of coat curl of his Dam for BOB, had there been a rosette would have been RBOB

OPEN (1 entry)

1st Bradley’s SH CH STANEGATE STAGE DEBUT (AI) ShCEx, well-balanced 6 yrs B that I have judged before, beneath her tightly-curled coat & compact outline is a strongly-built powerhouse of an IWS, feminine head of correct proportions, dark almond eye with intelligent knowing expression, strong neck into well-constructed front assembly, deep & wide all through body with well-sprung ribs & short back, excelled in bend of stifle & width of thigh, her free & even stride was spot-on, her powerful rear providing effortless drive, BOB & later BIS3, congratulations
