United Spaniel Association - JHA & AHA classes

Firstly, I would like to thank the society for inviting me to judge the handling classes and my steward for doing a fabulous job! The quality of handlers was high and I was glad to see some really lovely communication and rapport between the handlers and their charges in the ring. A problem I noticed with all of my entries today was the distance at which the dogs were presented to me at the end of the pattern work. Your dog should be stacked 3 fairly large steps away from the judge to allow them to have a good view.

JHA 12-17:

1st - Keira Clark

This handler stood alone today but put in a very solid performance! She stacked her charge to advantage and was always patient and speaking reassuringly to her dog. I would prefer a clearer show of teeth. She applied the golden rule well as she took care to shadow correctly and during the pattern work, she had lovely straight lines but I would like to see her slow down and sharpen her corners. Great work, Keira!

AHA 18-35:

1st - Phoebe Toublic

This is a handler I have previously admired for her gentle approach to handling and today was no exception! Phoebe had her dog foot perfect at all times and shadowed correctly as well as knowing her points of the dog. She had straight lines and sharp corners on her pattern work but I would prefer a faster pace to really show off your charge. Well done, Phoebe!

2nd - Lucy Wareham

Lucy pushed really hard for first place today and really excelled in her pattern work, showing off her dog’s movement to advantage! She worked very well with her dog, knew her terminology and showed the bite clearly. She lost out as she just needs to add in the finer details to polish her performance such as making sure her lead is kept tucked away and that she is refraining from blocking the judge’s view of the dog behind when shadowing in the line up. Great work, Lucy!

AHA 36+:

1st - Daisy Toublic

This handler, although standing alone, definitely had to work hard in the ring today! I admired her firmness with her rather uncooperative charge during the pattern work, while still maintaining her straight lines and sharp corners. She also ensured her dog was stacked well and shadowed effectively in both the line up and the individual assessment. Well done, Daisy!
