Midland English Springer Spaniel Society

Firstly, I would like to thank the Midland English Springer Spaniel Club for the kind invitation to judge at this well supported open show, together with my efficient stewards and all the exhibitors for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner. I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment and was greeted throughout the day with a warm, friendly and collaborative atmosphere that made for a most enjoyable experience.

There was some lovely quality present across the entry, with several exhibits of genuine merit that combined breed type, balance and sound construction. I was particularly pleased to see so many dogs shown in excellent hard condition, carrying appropriate muscle tone and presented with care, with many exhibiting good feet, correct proportions and happy, typical temperaments. Overall, I felt there was a pleasing depth of quality throughout the classes, and several exhibits stood out for their overall make, shape and effortless movement.

One of the nicest aspects of the day was the camaraderie ringside and the obvious shared passion for the breed amongst exhibitors. It was lovely to see people staying afterwards to chat, discuss dogs and enjoy one another’s company. In today’s world, where the pressures of competition can sometimes overshadow enjoyment, it was refreshing to be reminded that this is first and foremost a hobby, with the welfare of the dogs and the future of the breed always coming first.

Close decision.

1 st 12 - McCarthy’s Sieger’s Touch Too Much at Cuandor (IMP DNK)

Previously critiqued

2 nd 16 – Nicklin, Bellamy & Nicklin’s Sieger’s She’s A Classiic For Wythnick (IMP DAN)

13mths. Another with lovely muscle, good bone and feet. Tidier out and back but didn’t move as

well as she is made and did have the reach of 1. At one with her handler but I felt the lead could

have been loosened slightly to give her, her head. Nevertheless, she is a quality bitch.

1 st 33 – Weyman’s Spuffing Bellini

Angulation front and rear is okay. Easy gait in profile.

1 st 29 – Unwin’s Allenies Lady Marmalade

Almost 4yrs. Lovely, feminine head, with very expressive eyes. Nice arch of neck, sufficient bone,

and feet are good. Okay for croup, good bend of stifle. I felt she was carrying a little too much leg in proportion to her depth of body at present which affected the overall balance for me.

1 st 8 – Hoare’s Crackerjanne Cleo Laine at Lymnoares

7yrs. Smaller in overall proportions but is balanced. Very feminine head and expression, lovely dark

eyes. Angulation front and rear is okay. Has a tendency to ‘sidewind’ a touch but is steady in profile

movement.
