Junior Handling
Standard overall was good but where are the basics rules of handling? Noone was smiling and appearing to be enjoying themselves in the ring. With the exception of a very small handful across all handlers, no one was talking to their dog. Please , please please, enjoy your time in the ring with your dogs and talk to them. A lot of handlers were putting their head in the way, or hair dangling in the way when I asked to see the mouth. When competing at higher levels, these are the type of things that can cost places. There was also swapping the lead into the other hand on the up and down when not needed. There are training days for juniors and adults and having done these myself, these are perfect to finish off your performance in the ring. Keep an eye on the RKC website and social media for these training days as they are good fun.
6-11 years (4, 1a)
1st Isabella Scullion handling a Whippet. Smartly dressed, polite and presented her dog well. Moved the dog at the correct speed and carried the patterns out well. Turns were sharp and she had ring awareness. Keep working at it, watch other handlers and keep improving. I can see that she is about to head up into the 12-16 age category. This is where the training days will help just tidy up those very small, but costly details.
2nd Summer Welch Handling a Shetland Sheepdog. Another rsmartly dressed handler. Handled well overall, but went inbetween dog and judge on the move which cost the higher place. She presented the dog well and moved correctly. Turns were neat and up and lines were neat. Another with good potential to hit top spots.
3rd Jonathan Roberts Record with a papillon. Can see this young chap is very novice to handling but his rapport with the dog was clear to see. He has the basics there and needs to keep learning. He presented the dog well and moved the dog at a good pace. Just came up against two very good handlers on this occasion. Keep training and learning as we don’t see many male handlers competing nowadays.
12-16 (6)
1st Phoebe Johnson handling a Shetland Sheepdog. Very polished performance and knows how to show her dog well. Well presented in herself and presented the dog well. Good table work when showing teeth and correcting feet. Patterns carried out well, moving the dog at a good pace. Lines were straight, turns were neat. Id be confident handing her my dog to show. Best Junior Handler.
2nd Kara Mason showing a Papillon. Another of high standard handling on the table and floor. Presented herself and the dog to a high standard. Patterns carried out correctly, however, she changed the lead to the other hand on the up and down which wasn’t necessary. Had she moved around her dog at the turn it would have been a smoother movement for me.
3rd Robyn Barrell handling a Shih Tzu. Again well presented in herself and showed the dog well. Head in the way of me when showing the teeth. Patternwork was carried out correctly. Had a tendency to break the dog’s gait when turning which throw off the overall performance. However, she is at the younger end of the age range and unlucky to come up against two older handler that have that smidge more experience. Keep going and youll be another taking top awards in time.
17-49 (13,7a)
1st Ann-Marie Taylor handling a Border Collie. 100% chef’s kiss to this handler. I couldn’t fault her. Even with a collie in a small ring her performance was spot on. Well presented in herself and showing the dog well. Another with ring awareness. Teeth shown well and talking to the dog. The patterns were correctly carried out with no break in gait, no dangling lead and no need to swap lead into other hand. Just a good handler that got the best out of her dog. High standards deserve high praise. Best Adult Handler.
2nd Nicola Scarlett handling a Beagle. Again, such a polished performance. Well presented and shown her dog to a high standard. Teeth shown correct, leg placed back well when I moved it. Has ring awareness and considerate of other exhibitors, talking to the dog. Patterns carried out well moving dog at correct pace. Hair split for me was the aforementioned hand swap on the up and down putting the dog into her right hand when not needed.
3rd Tracy Evans handling a Siberian Husky. Another smart handler showing her dog well. Moved the dog well at the correct pace. However, there were a few “handling” rules that need to be remembered. As mentioned, training days to just elevate a performance are available. She appeared to be enjoying her time in the ring which was nice to see.
50+ (6, 2a)
1st Janet Rice with a Tibetan Spaniel. Another handler of high standards just doing everything asked and doing it well. Presenting her dog well on the table and correct patterns on the floor. Praising the dog throughout. Aware of whats going on in the ring at all times and considerate to other handlers. Lost out for BAH as on the up and down she changed hands when not needed. Really splitting hairs and that’s what it came down to.
2nd Amanda Bryant with a Shih Tzu, another well presented handler showing her dogs well. Table presenting was good, teeth shown well. Patterns were carried out correctly but had a tendency to jeep swapping the lead in the hands which threw the dogs gait off.
3rd Penney Steele with a Bearded Collie. Unlucky to meet two good handlers in this class, but also another that further training could just give her the finer points needed to be taking top spots. Good rapport with the dog, In general showing it well considering it was a small ring. Would like to have seen neater lines and neater turns when moving but small ring with a big dog isn’t the best for all.
