Terrier Club of South Wales Open Show 08.02.26

Judge: Natasha Walker (Teshleystaf)

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at your show and thank you for your hospitality. It’s a show I always support and enjoy coming to, so was honoured to be invited to judge. A thank you to my steward Gareth Thomas, the loudest in south Wales. And a final offer of my gratitude to the exhibitors who allowed me the honour of judging their dogs, but also to the sportsmanship they all showed each other. A couple of things to mention, I found some exhibits lacking the bold and fearless Stafford temperament, which is something to be mindful of, and some lacking ideal conditioning which really does improve the overall appearance of the dog.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

PUPPY DOG – (2, 1 Abs)

1.Payne’s – CELYNSTAFF COLLIERS LAD

Very smart black brindle compact package. His head shows many virtues, with good ratios, dark eyes, and a good bite being some to mention. Enough though being a standard more compact package, he had more than enough strength for size with a good width to his front and enough bone. His body maturing nicely with a good spring of rib, level topline and well angulated rear. He was a tad unsettled on the move, but being a baby, I am sure this will improve in time. As will he in maturity. Pleased to award him BPD.

JUNIOR DOG (1, 0 Abs)

1.Williams’ – JUNIORS SULTAN

A black brindle lad, with enough strength of size. He has a good blend of bull and terrier. His head having the correct proportions, neat ears and dark round eyes. Good bite and enough underjaw. His front straight with ample bone and neat feet. His body shows enough rib at this age, level top line, and good depth to brisket. His loin was light and his rear maturing nicely. He was a tad unsettled on the move, but I think a smidge more ringcraft and a bit more time to mature will help this duo reach their potential.

POST GRADUATE DOG (3, 1 Abs)

A difficult class and split hairs on this one, it really could go either way.

1.Conner’s – RINGABLOCK MAXIE

A black brindle dog of standard size shown in fit condition. His head is more a terrier blend rather than bull terrier, slightly less stop than 2 but enough for the head shape, virtues include neat ears and a clean muzzle with correct bite. Their body was balanced showing good width for size and ample bone, which led down straight legs and well-padded feet. They were shown in a wonderful fit condition which aided the overall appearance of them. They moved out well with the handler getting the best of him.

2.Norton’s – SKYLAND FUZANGLONG

A playful lad, who has the most stunning head piece, which is to die for. His eyes big dark and round, and very expressive using his neat rose ears. His muzzle clean, showing no thickness and correct bite. His expression is just beautiful and has lovely flashy white markings on his brindle. In the body he is very standard in size, and balanced. He has enough bone for his size and enough rib, and level top line, his loin is light and has a good width to his thigh. All upheld on very neat well-padded feet. He was a tad unsettled on the move, but I did see enough movement too see he can move well enough. Just an overall improvement in his condition will really finish him off and change his placings.

LIMIT DOG (4,1 Abs)

1. Mr R Mayers’ - MAYNESTAFF SMOOTH CRIMINAL JW

A Strong all over Black brindle dog, in a lovely condition. I described him before as waiting to the last minute to draw you in, and he did that again today. A lovely head piece with distinct stop, dark round eyes, and neat ears. His bite corrects and has a lovely underjaw. When he wants you to see it his expression is spot on. His neck broad. His front is wide set, with good fore chest and depth of brisket, it led down to well boned legs and neat feet. His body shows a well sprung rib, a lighter loin. His rear was well enough angulated and moved with ease. Won this class due to his overall balance and profile.

2.Mrs D Oram & Miss Z Smith’s - KARMARISTAFFS ROYAL RUMBLE FOR KALANIBULL

Black brindle dog, top size but balanced. I have judged him previously and today; he did not seem to want to play ball as much for his lady handler. Another with a strong head housed by neat ears, wonderful expression well pronounced cheek muscles and a clean muzzle with correct bite. He has enough bone for his size, with correct fore chest and depth of brisket, leading down to straight legs on well-padded feet. He has sufficient rib, was light in the loin. He is in good condition, one which I think maintains his overall picture. Lost out on this class, just on overall look in profile. Could swap places with 1 at any time.

OPEN DOG (2,0 Abs)

1.Antonio’s – CH GAZSTAFF’S MAN IN BLACK FOR ANTONIOSTAFF JW SCHEX OSW

At 7 years old, I can imagine this dog might have been quite something at his peak, but he still oozes a lot of breed type and can challenge a lot. He is only slightly showing his age with some silver sprinkling. Sire to LD, PGD & LB winners he has passed on some of his virtues. Black brindle dog, who he is very standard in height and size. He has a very strong head housed with neat ears, with deep distinct stop, and well-muscled cheeks. His eyes very round and dark. He has a correct scissor bite. He has a wide enough front for his size and has good bone. His feet neat showing no weakness at the pasterns. His body showed a good depth of brisket, amble rib and a level topline. He moved out well. He won this class on his overall breed type and expression. Pleased to award him BD and RBOB, missing out to the bitch on condition and alertness.

2.ROBINSON, ROBINSON-COX & COX – HAMASON SWEET LITTLE MYSTRY JW

A lovely brindle and white lad who I have judged previously. He is maturing like fine wine and think he has somewhat of an old school style about him, Taller than one, but ever so balanced with good strength for size. He has a distinguished head shape, with expressive eyes, clean muzzle and correct bite. His front strong, showing good width and strength for size. His legs, well boned and round, with neat feet. His body shows enough rib, a good depth of brisket leading up to a lighter loin and hands on is in good condition, fitter than meets the eye. He moved around the ring parallel and free flowing. He just lacked a bit of sparkle, which cost him today. But his virtues alone secured him reserve best dog and I have no doubt that on his best days, he can challenge them all.

PUPPY BITCH (2,1 Abs)

1.PLUMSTEAD’S – JAZOSTAFF COSWOLD GEM

A pretty black brindle puppy of 11 months. Stood alone, but that did not mean she does not have quality to challenge others! Very feminine head, but still holding the virtues of a distinct stop, dark round eyes and neat ears. Her expression spot on and Her muzzle is of good length with correct scissor bite. Her front wide enough for her feminine body and developing well, her legs straight and feet neat. Her body showed a well developing shape, with a well sprung rib for this age. Her rear was well angulated and has developing muscle definition. She moved confidently around the ring. Delighted to award her BPB and BPIB, and was wonderful seeing her get puppy group 4, amongst some lovely company! Best of luck with her in the future!

JUNIOR BITCH (1, 0 Abs)

1.WILLETTS & BILLINGHAM’S - HAMASON HEART’S ON FIRE

Red & White Bitch who appears to be a force to be reckoned with, credit to her handler for containing her energy for life. I have admired her ringside for a while now and was delighted hands on how she did not disappoint. She has a beautiful alert expression. Her head is strong enough for size, but feminine. Housed by neat ears, dark round eyes, correct length of muzzle, with a clean tight lip and shows correct size bite. Her front is wide enough for her size, her legs straight and her feet neat and tidy. Her body showed good spring of rib, level topline and correct depth of brisket, her loin is light and her rear well angulated. She is fit as a fiddle and in great condition. Her handler moved her at the correct pace for her, showing effortless movement. I did not hesitate to award her best bitch and in return best of breed! I absolute adored her! I truly believe this girl will earn her crown and will watch on with keen interest.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (2, 0 Abs)

1.Antonio’s – MAYNESTAFF FANCY A CWTCH FOR AQUATOR

A pretty bitch with bone and substance. Won this class on her overall balance and strength for size. Feminine bitch with a lovely head and expression, with dark round eyes and enough stop. Her muzzle clean and her bite correct. Her neck was short which led down to well laid shoulders, well boned legs and neat feet. She has a good width to her front, and a good depth of brisket. Her rib well sprung and she is close couple. Her rear well angulated. She moved well enough and secured the class with her overall balance and strength for size.

2.CONNER’S – RINGABLOCK BLACK LOTUS

Another feminine bitch, less strong all over than 1. Still with a very feminine head, with a slightly more blend of terrier than bull. Her eyes dark, her ears neat and she is very clean with correct length of muzzle, and good bite. Her body could benefit from a tad more depth of brisket but still showed good width for her size and ample rib. She moved out well enough but having a tad more confidence in the ring would do her a world of good. She was in lovely condition; I just preferred the overall balance and size of 1.

LIMIT BITCH (1,0 Abs)

1.Mayers’ -MAYNESTAFF THE GIRL IS MINE JW

A very compact black brindle bitch, she is very strong but very feminine with it. Her head strong with distinct stop dark round eyes, neat ears and a correct scissor bite, with good underjaw. Hands on her body, she is in fabulous condition. She has plenty of bone, her legs round and on neat feet. Showing no weakness on the pasterns. Her front wide but correct for her size and bone. She has correct depth of brisket and well sprung ribs. Her rear is well angulated and has correct tail set. She moved with ease around the ring, parallel and free flowing. She lost out on RBB due to preferring the balance of the OB winner.

OPEN BITCH (2,1 Abs)

1.Payne’s – AUCHDURAN KISS FULL OF FIRE

Black brindle bitch who caught my eye as she walked in. Not flashy but still hold virtues which makes her a very smart bitch. Her head round, with half pricked ears. It housed dark round eyes, and a keen alert expression. Her muzzle of good length with enough underjaw and her bite correct with large teeth. Her front had enough width for her size, and she had good bone. Her body shows enough rib, a level topline and is close coupled. Her rear had good angulation, and she moved with economy of effort around the ring. The only thing I would have liked to have seen on her was a bit more muscle tone and condition. She kept standing out to me in the final line up and I was pleased to award her RBB. Handler left so she did not get a chance to challenge for RBOB.
