The Pennine and Scottish French Bulldog Association Open Show

31st August 2026

Judge: Mrs Louise Brooks (Serenant)

I would firstly like to thank the committee and exhibitors for a wonderful show. It had been a long day for some, with travel included on a bank holiday Monday, and yet the atmosphere around the ring was relaxed, friendly and enjoyable. There are a few general points I would like to pick up before we get into the critiques. ‘Muscular’ is written in the breed standard on four occasions, along with ‘good bone’; many dogs, were lacking somewhat in this area. A French Bulldog is a bull breed, I expect to have a dog in hard, fit, muscular condition, with good bone. Secondly, movement. On going away, I observed around 80% of dogs to be close or very close at the back. Loins are required to be ‘relatively’ short, there were several dogs with loins that were too short – we have to leave enough room for heart and lungs, and whites showing around the eyes – there should be ‘no white when looking straight forward’. Lastly – tails, we need to see more of them in the breed as a whole. I did feel that all dogs were wonderful in temperament and showed no significant breathing issues, and thoroughly enjoyed my appointment- thank you.

BABY PUPPY DOG (2,0)

The first class of the day, and what a treat! Two beautiful puppies with gleaming coats, wonderful silhouettes, and ring presence in abundance. An excellent start!

1st Bagnall’s - Winuwuk Private Ryan at Mejeric

This 4-month-old youngster caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. What a gorgeous young man. Dark brindle with a gleaming, lustrous coat. Excellent in profile, so well balanced, with correct topline, angulation, and a developing fore chest. Good spring of rib and a gentle cut up. Strong, muscular body and limbs, with a fabulous straight front and fantastic movement in all directions. Lovely square head and jaw with dark eyes, open nostrils, muzzle clear in profile, and correct ear shape and placement, giving a beautiful and yet cheeky expression. Excellent pigmentation throughout, including nails. Pasterns could be a touch tighter and tail set is a little high at present, but he is ever so young at the moment. I really do feel he has the potential to do very well, and will watch his show career with great interest. BBPIS

2nd Westmorland’s - Gailbulls Euthoria

Another beautiful youngster at 5 months old. Strong, well boned and all male. Fabulous coat. Excellent angulation both front and rear with a great fore chest covered with a beautiful flashy white bib. As with 1, wonderful pigmentation throughout, dark eyes, open nostrils, and a deep, inquisitive expression. Good spring of rib for his age, correct top line, cut up and low set tail. I feel he has more growing to do than 1, and therefore is not the finished article at present, but he is again, one to watch in the future.

BABY PUPPY BITCH (2)

1st Smith’s - Theapaul Majestic Sky at Ellouab

A lovely little 5-month-old fawn female. Compact, cobby, well boned and muscular, with strong pasterns and tight feet. Head is square with correct ear placement and her pigmentation is excellent – dark mask, eyes and nails. Sweet expression, with open nostrils and muzzle clear in profile. Nice topline and gentle cut up, with good spring of rib, and a tail! A touch tight at the back during movement but great on the move in profile.

2nd Thornton’s - Delightbull Chervil

Another lovely baby at 5 months old. Dark brindle female who looks wonderful in profile, beautifully arched neck leading to a correct topline and low set tail, gentle cut up. Fore chest and spring of rib are developing, good angulation in both rear and front. Such a beautiful expression, using her round dark eyes to draw you in, excellent pigmentation throughout. Ears correct in shape and placement, and used well. Just preferred the movement of 1 on the day.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (3,0)

1st Hickin & Rankin’s - Castlebrim Brummie Boy

A fabulous 7-month-old dark brindle male. Muscular, compact, with plenty of bone and substance. His head is wonderful. Square, finely wrinkled and flat between correctly placed bat ears, which he used throughout. Dark round eyes, excellent cushioning of cheek, deep square jaw and an excellent up sweep – so rare to see. Excellent pigmentation throughout and a wonderful intense expression. Strong, arched neck, leading to correct topline and low-set tail. Great fore chest, gentle cut up and fantastic angulation. To be ultra critical, he could be a touch longer in loin and pasterns could be a little stronger but he has quite a bit of growing to do yet. This is evidential when on the move. Lovely in profile and coming towards but close at the moment moving away. I am sure, however, that he will tighten up as he grows and look forward to seeing what the future holds for him. BPIS

2nd Ayriss’ - Boulevaya Rebel Yell

A lovely little 8-month-old fawn bitch. Great in profile, with a nicely arched neck leading to a correct top line, tail set and gentle cut up. Her head is square with lovely bat ears set correctly and lots of fine wrinkle on forehead, open nostrils. Dark eye and pigmentation giving a really set expression, however, I would prefer no white showing. Good angulation which she used to move well around the ring. Lovely movement in profile but a touch tight from behind.

3rd Gough’s - Tannaseali Cuckoo Fury

PUPPY DOG (3,0)

1st Ross’ - Muggshotts Bop Till You Drop by Franstelgo's

A striking clear 10-month-old brindle pied, who does catch your eye immediately. Strong shoulder with good layback, angulation very good at rear also. Correct topline and low set tail. Excellent spring of rib, muscular, compact and cobby, although I would prefer a slightly longer loin. Great head and ear shape with lovely pigmentation of nose and lip and fantastic nostrils. Used his bat ears throughout, adding to his cheeky expression. Confident on the move, a little showman, and handled beautifully.

2nd Gough’s - Tannaseali Lightning Two

Another lovely clear brindle pied puppy at 6 months old. Great in profile with a strong arched neck, leading to correct topline and low-set tail, gentle cut up. Good spring of rib, with some substance, bone and musculation. Great angulation both front and back, straight front. Head of correct shape, with dark round eyes and great open nostrils. Would prefer no white showing around the eye. A little uncoordinated on the move today but he has plenty of growing to do yet.

3rd Handley-Sawer’s - Nortilly Stand To Attention

LIMIT DOG (4,0)

1st Wood’s - Zimblistic Spooky Charm Delightbull

A 2-year-old brindle pied male who is so well put together. Beautifully balanced in profile, compact, muscular with substance and bone. His head is strong, masculine and square with the most beautiful small bat ears placed correctly and used throughout. Fine wrinkling when alert on the forehead, dark round eyes – although a touch of which showing. Great pigmented nose and lips with open nostrils. Padded cheek and deep square jaw. A Beautifully strong arched neck leading to correct topline and low set tail. Excellent spring of rib with a gentle cut up. Straight in the front with good angulation, could perhaps have a touch more angulation in the back. Fantastic mover, in all directions. A top-quality male who pushed hard for a top spot, just narrowly missing out on reserve best dog.

2nd Smith’s - Membully Razzmatazz at Ellouab JW

Another really nice male – a 2-year-old brindle. Compact, cobby with some substance. Lovely square head, with fine wrinkle when alert, correct ear size, shape and placement. Dark round eyes with an expression that lets you know he’s trouble! Great length and arch of neck leading to correct topline and low tail set, soft cut up. 3rd Ross’ - Franstelgo's Low Rider

OPEN DOG (2)

1st Hickin & Rankin’s - CH Chelmbull Space Man

A top-class masculine brindle 4-year-old male. Full of substance, bone and muscular throughout but with balance, poise and grace. A wonderful head, square, masculine with small bat ears placed and used correctly. Fine wrinkle, gorgeous dark round eyes and a wide jaw. Nostrils could be a touch more open. His expression is full of mischief – you just can’t look at him without smiling. A typical, clown – like, French Bulldog in temperament, and extremely excited to show on the day. Strong, muscular, arched neck leading to a correct top line and low set tail. Wonderful spring of rib, a gentle cut up – if I’m being ultra critical, I would prefer it slightly more defined. Fantastic angulation and excellent musculation of limbs in both the fore and rear. Great fore chest. Movement was a touch tight from behind, but it was purposeful and free flowing, with a wonderfully straight front coming towards and his profile held throughout from the side. Very pleased to award him BIS.

2nd French’s - Bincombefarm Morsmordre JW

Another quality male, shown to perfection. A 3-year-old reverse brindle male, who again was masculine but without being overdone. Great square head with fine wrinkling and round bat ears used and placed correctly. Square, wide jaw. Dark round eyes – a touch of white showing, but his expression was beautiful. He was definitely deep in thought, if only we knew what he was thinking! Lovely length and arch on neck leading to a correct topline and low set tail. Good spring of rib and angulation – could perhaps do with a touch more in the rear. His movement was fantastic - drive, strength and free-flowing. As with 1, a little close from behind, but a top-quality dog and well deserving of RBD.

VETERAN DOG (1)

1st Bryant’s - CH Kingfriend Mr Godwin JW

An 8-year-old brindle male, with substance, bone and muscle in abundance – shown in great condition. A beautiful head, finely wrinkled when alert with correctly shaped and placed ears, used throughout. Dark round eyes giving a measured but thoughtful expression. Lovely pigmentation. A well-muscled and slightly arched neck, leading to a correct top line, gentle slope over the croup, and low set tail. Great spring of rib with soft cut up. Well angulated in both front and rear, with strong muscular limbs. Pasterns and feet could be tighter, which I felt did hinder his movement at times, but a very nice quality male.

SPECIAL OPEN PIED DOG (4,1)

1st Hucker’s - CH Bevanray Terrypendry JW ShCEx OSW

A 4-year-old brindle pied male, small in size, but with bags of personality and one of the best heads seen today. His head, square and broad with fine wrinkle without being overdone. Small bat-like ears placed and used correctly. Open nostrils. Dark round eye – with no white showing when facing front, and beautiful pigmentation, giving a playful yet sweet expression. Jaw wide and slightly undershot. Nicely arched neck leading to correct topline and low- set tail. Good spring of rib, with some muscle and substance throughout. Nice and straight at the front with strong pasterns and tight feet. Good angulation, lacking perhaps a little in the rear. He moved beautifully with his handler and clearly enjoyed every second

2nd Hunt’s Xandene Its A Kinda Magic at Balistix

A 5-year-old fawn pied, slightly longer cast that 1. Masculine head with good pigmentation and gentle wrinkle. Ears correctly placed and used well. Dark, round eyes – he was another with a cheeky expression. Arched neck leading to a correct top line and low-set tail. Good spring of rib and gentle cut-up. He could be a touch more compact, but he had good angulation and moved well, a touch close from behind.

3rd Gough’s - 18 — Tannaseali Cuckoo Fury

SPECIAL OPEN BRINDLE DOG (1)

1st Bryant’s - CH Archness The Audacity JW

A 4-year-old brindle male and another quality example of a French Bulldog. Muscular, with plenty of bone and substance, A lovely head, square, strong and masculine. Ears of correct size and placement, used throughout. Flat between them with fine wrinkling when alert. Dark round eyes and excellent pigmentation, giving a soft and yet intense expression. I would prefer a touch more length of neck, but top line is correct with a gentle rise over the loin, rounding off at the croup to a low-set tail. Excellent spring of rib, excellent angulation in both front and rear with a soft cut-up. Strong pasterns and tight feet. On the move, lovely and straight coming towards and he kept his profile beautifully from the side, a touch tight in the rear. Another male who pushed hard for top honours today. I was spoilt for choice.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (5,1)

1st Fawcett & Smith’s - Chelmbull Fool Me Once at Zilnor

Beautiful dark brindle bitch at 7 months old. She has some growing to do, but a lot to like about this young lady. Beautifully clean lines giving a classy silhouette. A head with fantastic upsweep of jaw, excellent pigmentation, with dark round eyes and lips, and just enough wrinkle. Would prefer dark nails also. Padding developing and wide-open nostrils. A wonderful neck, of moderate length and well arched. Shapley body, with correct top line and low-set tail. Spring of rib and fore chest developing nicely. Although a little boisterous today, she moved out well with her handler. Lovely puppy. One to watch, I am sure.

2nd Ward & Hutchinson’s - Oschalben Oh My

A lovely little 8-month-old fawn pied puppy. Smaller in stature than 1 but well put together. Nice substance for one so young. Compact and well-muscled with strong pasterns and tight feet. Correct top line, gentle cut-up and low tail-set – and there was a tail! Great angulation with strong hindquarters. Would prefer a little more length to neck. Her head is developing nicely, ear placement and size correct. Open nostrils and muzzle seen clearly in profile. Jaw is a little too undershot at present, but she has plenty of time on her side. Lovely, sweet expression – so eager to please. Her movement was very good also. Well done little one.

3rd Ayriss’ - Boulevaya Clea Seraphina

PUPPY BITCH (2)

1st Hutchinson’s Oschalben Obsession

What a beautiful puppy, who ticked so many boxes today for me, including sound movement in all directions. A dark brindle 7-month-old puppy, with fantastic substance and bone, muscular throughout and in excellent condition with a gleaming finely textured coat. Her head is feminine yet square with good padding of the cheek, and soft dark round eyes that I am sure would melt the heart of even the hardest of souls. Fine wrinkle across her forehead when alert and ears of correct size and placement, used to her advantage throughout. Her head is slightly out of proportion to her body at present, but has plenty of time to develop – she is still a baby. Her forequarters are straight with nice fore chest developing, great layback of shoulder giving excellent angulation matching at the front and rear. Neck strong and slightly arched, being hyper critical, I would prefer a touch more length, but her topline is perfect, leading to a gentle rise of the loin, rounding off over the croup and a low-set tail. A gentle cut up leads on from a deep, wide brisket. On the move, this young lady topped them all. So sound, in all directions. Coming toward, she held her front straight with no paddling, from the side, she was free-flowing with dive and pazazz, keeping her profile at all times and from the back, equally as sound. A smashing young lady and I was very pleased to award her RBIS, BOB and BPIS. I will be watching her future with interest.

2nd Hucker’s - Muggshotts Billet Doux

Another quality puppy at 10 months old. This time a brindle pied. A shapely young lady in profile. Nicely arched neck, leading to a correct top line and low tail-set. Gentle cut-up and a developing spring of rib and fore chest. Good pasterns and tight feet. Well-conditioned around shoulder and upper arm, also in the rear, with plenty of substance. Shoulder angulation is very good, I would prefer a little more in the rear. Lovely square head with excellent pigmentation around the eyes, nose and lips. Lovely open nostrils and good upsweep of jaw. Her ears are placed correctly, a little large, which I am sure she will grow into. She does need to use them more at the moment, in order for them to be on the top of the head. Gorgeous, soft expression given by her deep, dark round eyes, with no white showing when looking front. Muzzle clearly defined in profile. Very good on the move in all directions. A very smart young lady.

JUNIOR BITCH (4,1)

A 1-year-old brindle, shapely in profile with a nicely arched neck of good length, leading to a correct topline and low tail-set. Fore chest developing along with spring of rib and a lovely gentle cut-up follows on from a relatively deep brisket. Good pasterns and tight feet. Feminine head with correct ear set and size, used very well. Dark round eye, would prefer a little more padding to cheek. Excellent pigmentation and brilliant nostrils. Her muzzle is clearly viewed from the side. Unlucky to meet 1 on the day, I just feel that she needs to fill out a touch more, developing a little more substance. Her movement was very good from all angles.

A lovely little dark brindle bitch coming up to 2 years old. Nice straight front, leading to strong pasterns and tight feet. Excellent pigmentation throughout, including dark nails. A brindle pied at nearly 1 years old. Such a balanced bitch – lovely in profile. Muscular, with plenty of substance and bone. A well arched, powerful neck leads onto a correct topline, rising gently over the loin and rounding off at the croup to a low-set tail. Excellent spring of rib, muscular fore and rear quarters, good pasterns and tight feet, Fore chest could be a touch more prominent. Wonderful head, beautiful rounded bat ears, placed correctly and used throughout to her advantage. A luxurious expression given by her dark round eyes, complimented by excellent pigmentation, fine wrinkle and a padded cheek. Nice upsweep also. Lovely wide nostrils and muzzle clear in profile. Excellent on the move, with drive and purpose.

2nd Greenall’s - Princess Z Naszej Bajki at Manolta (Imp POL)

Another lovely bitch. And on a different day, could’ve easily swapped places with 1. I felt 1 had more substance. A brindle at 2 years old, who I have admired on many occasions in the ring. Shapely in profile, feminine, and nicely balanced. Beautiful arch of neck, which is muscular and strong. Perfect topline leading to a gentle rise over the loin and low-set tail and excellent angulation front and rear. Good spring of rib, gentle cut-up. Lovely and straight in the front, with strong pasterns and tight feet, dark nails. I would prefer perhaps a touch more in way of fore chest. 3rd Poulson’s - Aldhammill's Madamoiselle at Patchdown

Class 19: LIMIT BITCH (5,2)

This was the most difficult class of the day with all three bitches having some excellent qualities. Well done to all.

1st Watt & Smith’s - Rischale Esmerelda

A 3-year-old dark brindle bitch. In profile she displays a clean, crisp and feminine silhouette. Wonderful neck, well arched, of moderate length and powerful. This leads into a correct topline, gently rising over the loin and rounding off at the croup to a low-set tail. Great loin length on this young lady, still balanced but room for a healthy heart and lungs. Gentle cut-up to compliment below. Her front is straight, with a smooth line from shoulder, to fore arm and pasterns, which are strong and lead onto tight feet and dark nails. Good fore chest, this could be a touch more prominent. Excellent angulation both front and rear and good spring of rib. I would prefer a touch more substance here. Her head is divine. Excellently pigmentated with soft wrinkling, correct ear set and size and padded cheek. Her eye could be a touch darker but does not detract from a wonderful expression. You know she’s a sweetheart at just one glance. Excellent nostrils and muzzle, and a fabulous upsweep complete the picture. On the move she is sound, with drive and elegance. A lovely girl and one that will do very well, I am sure. Pleased to award her RB

2nd Thornton’s - Zimblistic Chelia

Another lovely brindle at 1 year old. Shapelier than 1, rising higher over the loin but still correct in outline. Great length and arch of neck, which is powerful and strong. Deep brisket, could have a touch more in the way of fore chest. Excellent spring of rib, complimented by muscular fore and rear limbs. This lady has plenty of substance. Excellent angulation. Strong pasterns, tight feet and dark nails. Head very good, with dark eyes, bat ears and padded cheek. She did seem a little nervous today I feel, so it was hard to gage a true expression. Great mover in all directions.

3rd Goodard’s - Kianspuchi Hedy Lamarr

Class 20: OPEN BITCH (3)

1st Smith’s - CH Rischale Henrietta at Ellouab

A beautiful 6-year-old brindle who I have admired for quite some time. Perfectly balanced, feminine and wonderful to watch move. Her soft but strong neck is well arched and leads to a perfectly shaped topline and low-set tail. Cut-up is gentle, leading on from a wide, deep brisket and fore chest. I feel that she needs a touch more substance at the moment, but her spring of rib is very good. Her angulation is excellent both front and rear. Pasterns strong and feet tight with a dark nail. A beautiful head, with soft, fine wrinkle, dark round eyes and ears which were of correct size and placement – she used them well. Wonderful upsweep of jaw. On the move, she was elegant, and moved soundly and with purpose.

2nd French’s - CH Bincombefarm Serpensortia JW

A more substantial young lady. A 3-year-old brindle pied. In profile, you can see the power this girl has. Muscular, arched neck leading to correct top line and low-set tail. Excellent spring of rib, substance and bone. Gentle cut-up. Straight at the front, with strong pasterns and tight feet. I did feel, going over her, that she perhaps is a little front heavy, but that is a minor detail. Her head is square, with beautifully rounded bat ears placed correctly and used throughout. An inquisitive and yet sweet expression is given with her dark round eyes, well pigmented lips and nose, Open nostrils and muzzle seen in profile. I would prefer no white showing around the eyes. On the move, she excels. Free and flowing, with purpose and drive. Beautifully straight coming towards and holds her profile to perfection from the side. A touch close from behind today.

2nd – Thornton’s - Bountiful Bess

Another wonderful veteran. An 11-year-old brindle. Shapely in profile, with a lovely length to her well arched neck, topline in a touch to high at the rear but rounds off at the croup to a low-set tail. Nice angulation both front and back. Her expression is wonderful, using her dark round eyes to draw you in. I bet she has plenty a story or two to tell. Outstanding nostrils and a fabulous mover in all directions. She could teach some of the youngsters a trick or two.

Class 22: SPECIAL OPEN PIED BITCH (2,1)

1st Hutchinson’s - Gailbulls Miss Gabrielle for Oschalben

I am so pleased that I got to write a critique on this lovely 2-year-old pied bitch, who has many excellent qualities. She is compact, cobby and full of substance whilst remaining feminine. Her profile is shapely with an arched neck, correct topline and low-set tail. Her loin could perhaps be a touch longer. Great angulation with strong pasterns and tight feet. Gentle cut-up. Her front in well developed and dead straight with good fore chest. Her head is lovely, Dark round eyes – although I would prefer no white, with bat ears of correct proportions and placement, Excellent pigmentation of nose and lips with open nostrils. SPECIAL OPEN FAWN BITCH (1)

1st Curran’s — Cabbrieli's Rivers Lucky Seven

A dark fawn at 3 years old. Nice and shapely in profile with an arched neck and correct topline. Tail set could be a touch lower. Good angulation and spring of rib, with nice pasterns and tight feet. Dark nails. A beautifully shaped head, fine wrinkling on the forehead when alert and correct size and placement of ears, which she used wonderfully. Round eyes, great pigmentation and padding to the cheeks. A little apprehensive in her expression but for a young lady who is clearly a little nervous, she did her handler proud. Although tight at the back, she is great little mover - a testament to her handler, whom she clearly trusts completely.
