SIBERIAN HUSKIES

My thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge Siberian Huskies—a breed I have always admired for its excellent endurance and ability in harness—and to the Scottish Siberian Husky Club for supporting the entry. I had a wonderful day at this most picturesque setting, with Jedburgh Abbey making a beautiful backdrop to our large ring and the sun shining all day.  

Thanks also to the exhibitors for the excellent entry, and to my able steward Peter Appleby for keeping everything running smoothly.

Puppy

(1,0) 1st Blackbird’s Kadexek’s Siberian Snow: 8 and a half month old white bitch, cleanly chiselled head with moderately sized erect ears set slightly apart, used well. Good pigment and tight fitting lips. Sparkling almond obliquely set eyes convey alertness and mischief. She has moderate bone throughout and stands on straight forelegs with moderate width to forechest, slight slope to flexible pasterns. Excellent feet, compact and of good size with tough, thick, large pads. Front and rear angles nicely balanced, would prefer slightly more length of leg. Sickle foxbrush tail, set on and carried correctly. Topline to strengthen. Playful and often unsettled on the move, as I’d expect in one so young, but showed glimpses of balanced free action. Appealing puppy who was well handled and gave a very good account of herself today. Best Puppy

Postgraduate

(4,0) 1st Bryson’s Azgard Padron of Inukshuk Rising 7, handsome agouti and white male of excellent proportions and covered in lean muscle. Conveys great mischief and readiness for action at all times, making his handler work hard today. Sporting a summer coat, appropriate for time of the year, but of correct texture. Top of the standard for height but showing excellent balance in length of leg and body. Clean fox-like head with tight fitting lips, almond-shaped eyes obliquely set, and good scissor bite. Ears strong and erect with good leather, set close together on slightly rounded skull. He has an excellent front assembly with good reach of neck that flows into a well set shoulder met by upper arm of good layback, placing strong, moderately boned front legs well under him. Gentle slope to flexible pasterns, and excellent oval, well-padded strong feet. Topline strong and level, slight rise over tight and muscular loin and gentle slope of croup to correct foxbrush tail, mobile on the move and carried in graceful sickle shape over the back standing. If nitpicking, could have slightly more ribbing. Rear angles complement his front, with strongly muscled thighs and low set hocks, rear pasterns straight, strong, and parallel. He was breathtaking to watch on the move, covering ground effortlessly with what seemed like only a handful of strides, foot placement balanced, topline steady and level – a picture of streamlined efficiency. He single-tracked correctly on the down and back, and maintained consistency of light, smooth, ground-covering action to win BOB. 

2nd Bryson’s Inukshuk Ride the Storm Two and a half year old piebald bitch, feminine, appealing head qualities and excellent balance throughout. Clean-chiselled head with strong, erect, medium-sized ears set slightly apart on gently rounded skull, lively expression in almond, oblique-set eyes. Good scissor bite. Lovely front assembly, her graceful arched neck leading to a well laid shoulder complemented by equal-length upper arm set at 90 degrees. Ideal length of leg and correct oval, compact feet, thickly padded and well suited to function. Strong topline and well ribbed up to tight short loin with a slight arch over. Slight slope to croup leading into correctly set tail. Well-muscled throughout and has good strength of bone without any heaviness. Her rear is also well made and powerfully muscled, with well angulated stifles and clearly defined low hocks. Demonstrated a lovely flowing lightfooted gait with correct convergence fore and aft, but had to concede 1st place to her sire whose ground coverage simply could not be matched today.

(4,1) 1st Bryson’s Inukshuk O’Aningan JW Rising 5 years old, attractive piebald male; I see also sired by my BOB. Medium bone and in hard condition throughout, and with no spare fat on him whatsoever. He has a pleasing clean, fox-like head and mischievous, energetic outlook. Good scissor bite. Excellent front and rear angles, with strong level topline, slight rise to loin and gently angled croup. Good balanced proportions with correct length of leg and body. Strong oval feet with thick, tough pads. He sports a correct double coat with straight, short guard hairs, although slight on undercoat today as expected. He was intent on throwing away the class by playing his handler up, but pulled it all together beautifully at the end to demonstrate foot-perfect single tracking and easy, fluid, long strides, similar to his sire who was my BOB today. 

2nd Bryson’s Ch Inukshuk Iqniq O’The Night JW Lovely bitch, littermate to 1. Feminine, with twinkling almond eyes set at oblique lines to her erect, medium-sized, well-placed ears. Excellent pigment on close-fitted lips. Good scissor bite. Moderate stop and slightly rounded skull, all coming together to produce pretty, typical finely chiselled fox-like head. Pleasing in profile with graceful lines of arched, medium-length neck flowing into well-laid back shoulder and strong, level topline leading to very slightly arched loin, croup falling away gently to well set and carried brush tail. Ribcage carried well back to taut loin with tuck under. Stands on strong, moderately boned and well-muscled legs. Free and agile flowing action with single tracking front and rear. On overall appeal, I thought I’d found my winner until the final lap of the ring where she lost interest somewhat, but it was a very close call and she could easily change places with 1 on another day.
