SAMOYEDS

My thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge Samoyeds at this welcoming, friendly show, and to the Northern Samoyed Society for sponsoring the entry. Despite the super entry of 12, there were plenty absent on the day, which was disappointing but completely understandable given the challenges weeks of relentless rain have posed for this venue. I’d like to congratulate the hardworking committee for putting on an excellent show regardless of constraints beyond their control, and thank both the exhibitors who gave me a lovely entry but couldn't attend and those who were able to allow me the pleasure of their dogs today.

Puppy (2,1): 1st McGreades’ Vandreem Imperial Ocean for Frostia: Well-schooled 9 month old bitch who was firmly focused on the task at hand today. She is well covered with plush, gleaming white coat. Her head conveys strength—with a broad, flat skull and tapering muzzle of equal length, punctuated by enough stop—whilst retaining abundant feminine appeal. Lovely ears—small, profusely coated, and erect with rounded tips, with the all-important thick ear leather. She has good depth of underjaw and well-developed, strong teeth forming correct deep scissor bite. Excellent jet black pigment on tight lips, nose, and eye rims, and sparkling dark brown eyes that are set well apart. In profile, this lovely young bitch catches the eye for overall balance, with a well-arched neck flowing into long, well-laid shoulders, forelegs of good length set under withers, and strong, short pasterns leading into correct flattish, well-feathered, thickly padded feet. Good depth of chest. Her front assembly is beautifully complemented by a well-turned stifle and strong, low-set hocks. She is well ribbed up to a compact, strong loin, her topline held strong and straight both standing and on the move. A correctly set tail of good length, carried well over and close to the back, well-furnished and profusely feathered, completes the attractive picture. On the move she covered ground easily with a free, driving gait, and did not stop showing for her handler today. I was pleased to award her BP & BOB, and will watch her career with interest.

Postgraduate (4,3) 1st Fowler & Dewar’s Apassionata Dreamer: Happy and animated 6.5 year old bitch of good breed type, sporting correct harsh cream coat. Head a correct blunt wedge, with good breadth of flat skull, medium-length muzzle of pleasing depth and width, and well-defined but not too prominent stop. Lovely almond-shaped dark brown eyes, set obliquely and moderately well apart, that harmonise beautifully with close-fitting, black lips—curved up at the corners—to produce classic smiling expression. Although missing an upper incisor, her bite and occlusion are absolutely correct. Her ears are plush and well set, moderate in size and rounded at the tips, mobile and used well. Another that was lovely to go over, with good reach of neck into excellent layback of shoulder, matched by good length of upper arm. Moderately well-sprung ribs, brisket to elbow, with correct width between forelegs, which were strong, vertical, and parallel with slight slope to flexible yet firm pasterns. Correct long, flattish, abundantly feathered feet. Topline level; tail set well and carried over the back, would just prefer longer and more feathered. This bitch has an excellent rear assembly, with graceful sweep of well-angulated stifle to well-defined, low hocks, with short, vertical rear pasterns. She demonstrated glimpses of powerful, economical movement with correct foot placement when settled. In close consideration in the challenge, unfortunately however she was determined to play up her handler. I look forward to seeing this quality bitch on another day when she is more settled. RBOB
