My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge Irish Setters, and to my efficient stewards Andy and Sue for ensuring the smooth running of the ring. I am also grateful to Lesley Gilks for kindly sponsoring Best of Breed and Best Puppy in Breed.

IRISH SETTERS

PUPPY (4, 0)

1. Hyslop’s GWENDARIFF LITTLE WHITE LIE (IKC)

An 11-month-old dog with a most appealing head, showing good chiselling, dark eye, correct parallel planes and a well-defined occipital protuberance, finished with a clean muzzle. Well-constructed forehand with pleasing shoulder placement, good depth of chest and good quality bone. A slight arch to the neck flows neatly into the shoulders and continues into a firm back, with correct croup width and tailset. Well-developed first and second thighs. Not fully settled with his handler today, but showed enough to indicate sound and effective movement. BP

2. Childs’ GWENDARIFF GRACE KELLY

Feminine youngster with a pleasing head and soft, expressive eyes set beneath gently raised brows, complemented by correct ear set & carriage. Balanced front assembly with appropriate angulation and well-developed ribbing extending well back. Good width over the croup, well-bent stifles and short hocks. A little exuberant on the move today, though fundamentally sound and positive in action. Well presented.

JUNIOR (2, 0)

1. Taylor’s DENDROCH ANNE FRANK

An elegant young bitch with a well-proportioned head and kind expression. Showing adequate stop, well-finished foreface and correct ear placement. Good depth through the chest and well-sprung ribs leading into a strong, slightly arched loin. Well-muscled hindquarters with good bend of stifle and short, firm hocks, allowing her to move freely and accurately. Presented in excellent coat of rich chestnut.

2. Childs’ GWENDARIFF GRACE KELLY

As above

POST GRADUATE (4, 2)

1. Jones’ GWENDARIFF RHIANNA

A quality, feminine bitch showing balance and style without exaggeration. Beautifully constructed head with correct planes, defined occiput and gentle expression framed by raised brows, with a refined foreface and correct earset. Excellent shoulder angulation, good bone, and well-developed chest with ribs carried well back into a strong, slightly arched loin. Elegant neck flowing into a gently sloping topline, with correct croup and tailset. Strongly muscled hindquarters, well-bent stifles and short hocks. Presented in excellent condition and moved with effortless reach and drive. Pleased to award her BOB.

2. Condron’s COVARNEY MR MAGOO

A well-presented dog with an attractive, balanced head, showing good foreface length in proportion to the backskull. Dark eye set beneath raised brows, defined occiput and clean muzzle. Well-proportioned overall with good bone and tidy, well-knuckled feet. Shown in excellent coat and condition. Displays good depth of chest and sound hind construction, moving out well.

OPEN (2, 2)

1. Bentley’s ASTLEYVIEW COMING HOME TO PENCLIPPIN

A masculine dog whose head would benefit from a more defined stop. Correct ear placement and a strong neck flowing into a gently sloping topline. Substantial bone and well-ribbed body leading into a firm loin, with a well-finished croup and correct tail carriage. Presented in a rich chestnut coat and shown in good condition.

2. Turner’s GWENDARIFF A GEE AN TEE FOR ME WITH DAZYCUTTER

A feminine exhibit which I liked very much for type, but she was not presented to advantage on the day; she could benefit from a little more overall condition. Pleasing eye and correct earset. Presents a balanced outline with appropriate angulation at both ends and short hocks. Her topline was lost at times in the stack. Good length of leg, moved OK
