Ashton-in-Makerfield Canine Society 1st March - Second Day

Junior Handling 6-11 years (5)

1st Ava Oddie. Eight-year-old handler presented her two-year-old Pointer with enthusiasm and confidence, showing a lovely partnership that was evident throughout the class. Her presentation was neat and appropriate, allowing the judge to clearly see the dog while also complementing the overall picture in the ring. The Pointer was clean and well prepared, demonstrating the handler’s care and attention before entering the ring. The rapport between handler and dog was particularly pleasing. Although the young Pointer tested her handling at times, she remained calm and gentle, regaining the dog’s focus with quiet control and patience. This showed maturity and a clear understanding of the importance of maintaining a positive connection with her dog. Her technique when carrying out the requested patterns was very good. She used the space in the ring well and maintained mostly straight lines and sensible corners, allowing the dog to move freely and show its natural stride. At moments the dog became slightly distracted, but the handler adapted well and continued confidently without losing composure. Balance between handler and dog was also evident, with the pair working together harmoniously. Overall, this was a very pleasing performance demonstrating confidence, patience, and a promising understanding of junior handling principles. Best Junior Handler.

2nd Audrey Turner. Nine-year-old handler presented her three-year-old Border Terrier with confidence and enthusiasm. Her presentation was neat, and the dog was well prepared, allowing the judge to clearly assess the pair. The rapport between handler and dog was pleasing to see, with the dog responding well to her guidance. She demonstrated good technique when carrying out the requested pattern, maintaining mostly straight lines and an appropriate pace for the breed. The pair moved together nicely, showing good balance overall. At times she could continue to refine her stacking and transitions, but she handled her dog calmly and positively throughout, resulting in a very commendable performance.

Junior Handling 12-16 years (2)

1st Chloe Dixon. Sixteen-year-old handler presented her six-year-old Parson Russell Terrier with confidence and maturity in the ring. Her presentation was smart and appropriate, and the dog was clean, tidy, and well prepared. The rapport between handler and dog was clear throughout the class, with the dog responding attentively to her cues and working happily alongside her. Her technique during the patterns was well executed, using the ring space effectively with clear lines and tidy turns while maintaining a suitable pace for the breed. The pair moved together in good balance, allowing the dog to show its natural movement. She remained calm and focused, listening carefully to instructions and carrying them out smoothly. Overall, this was a polished and composed performance demonstrating strong handling skills and an excellent partnership.

2nd Krystian Pietrykowski. Sixteen-year-old handler presented his six-month-old Golden Retriever in his first Junior Handling class with a positive attitude and clear enthusiasm. His presentation was tidy, and his puppy was well cared for and happily engaged with the environment. Considering the puppy’s young age and limited experience, the pair worked together well and showed encouraging signs of a developing partnership. During the patterns he made a good effort to use the ring space and guide his dog clearly. At times the puppy’s natural excitement made it slightly challenging to maintain consistent focus, which is very understandable for such a young dog. With time spent continuing to build rapport and ring experience together, this partnership will grow in confidence. Alternatively, practising with a more experienced dog could also help him further develop his handling technique. Overall, a promising first outing with plenty of potential.

Adult Handling 17-39 years (7,4)

1st Nicole Serle. 32-year-old handler presented her four-year-old Whippet to an excellent standard, demonstrating a polished and confident performance throughout the class. The rapport between handler and dog was particularly impressive. The Whippet responded instantly to subtle cues, showing a well-established partnership and clear trust. Balance between handler and dog was excellent, with the handler positioning herself thoughtfully to keep the dog visible to the judge at all times. Overall, this was a confident, accomplished display of skilled handling.

2nd Elizabeth Gough. 31-year-old handler presented her three-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever very well, creating a particularly pleasing picture in the ring. Both handler and dog were smartly presented, and the partnership between them was one of the highlights of the class. The rapport was clear throughout, with the dog responding attentively and working happily alongside her. Her technique was confident, completing the required patterns with good use of ring space, straight lines, and a suitable pace for the breed. Balance between handler and dog was well maintained, allowing the Toller to show its natural movement. I was very taken with this partnership and pushed hard for the class win.

As both handler and dog gain further ring experience, refinement in transitions and positioning will help enhance the overall presentation. A steady and competent performance.

2nd Nikki Craig. 41-year-old handler presented her 21-month-old Whippet in a tidy and composed manner. Both handler and dog were well turned out, creating a pleasing picture in the ring. The handler showed a calm approach, which helped the young Whippet settle and move comfortably beside her. Patterns were carried out clearly, with sensible use of the ring and a pace that suited the breed. The partnership between them is developing nicely, and the dog responded well to guidance. With continued ring experience and further refinement in transitions, this combination will continue to progress.

During the course of the class the handler unfortunately took a tumble in the ring. However, she demonstrated admirable resilience and determination by regaining her composure and continuing to complete the class. This showed real commitment to both the sport and to her dog. It was particularly pleasing to see how well the young Welsh Springer responded following the unexpected moment, quickly settling and continuing to work confidently alongside his handler. He was a real credit to her. When carrying out the requested patterns, the handler made good use of the ring space and allowed her dog to move at an appropriate pace for the breed. The rapport between the pair was evident, with the dog remaining attentive and cooperative. Overall, this was a commendable performance showing determination, sportsmanship, and a developing partnership between handler and dog. Best Adult Handler.
