Breed: Spaniel (Welsh Springer)

Wickford, Basildon & District Canine Society Open Show
Saturday 16th May 2026

My thanks to Wickford, Basildon & District Canine Society for their invitation to judge, and to ring stewards Lisa and Abby. Also, a big thank you to the exhibitors for their entries and support.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

Puppy (1)

1st Caldwell’s Hillpark Painted Lady for Cerysan
This young girl has the best of heads, feminine, slightly domed. She has pretty hazel eyes which are expressive and at times, cheeky! Her ears are vine-leaf in shape and set well. She has deep brisket and well sprung ribs for her age. She has round, cat-like feet and a merry temperament, moving positively around the ring with plenty of reach and drive. A promising show career ahead. BPIB and very pleased to see awarded PG4.

Junior: (0)

Limit: (3:1)

1st Gaylor and Robertson’s Gilstonia Run Red Rum for Aprilflash
This 2-year-old boy is balanced throughout and beautifully presented. He has a masculine head, a well-defined stop and under the eye has good chiselling. He has a strong, muscular body with excellent depth of chest and spring of ribs. His hindquarters are muscular and he has deep second thighs. He used this to drive around the ring with powerful ground-covering action. On the move he maintained his topline, correctly carrying his wagging tail, and was the best mover on the day. BOB and delighted that he was later awarded BIS.

2nd Cooper and Mullin’s Gilstonia Maggie May
Litter sister to 1, she has a beautiful feminine head with well defined stop, pretty hazel eyes and has a muscular neck set onto strong, sloping shoulders. She has good spring of rib and muscular loin. Good rear angulation and well let down hocks. She moved out well but preferred the reach and drive of winner today.

Open: (2)

1st Cooper’s Gilstonia Snow Moon
This girl is balanced throughout and is compact, symmetrical, with excellent angulation. She has a pretty head and beautiful, feminine expression. Well developed ribs and deep chest, slight arch to loin. Correct tail set, she moved out positively with drive and reach and carried her tail and head well. RBOB.

2nd Leach’s Islanza Hey Dude
This nearly 7-year-old gentleman is a picture on the stack, balanced and compact, well presented in good coat. He has a handsome head, slightly domed, and beautiful chiselling under his expressive eyes. Strong, muscular body and excellent depth of chest. I just would have loved to see him move out more positively, as today he didn’t have the reach and drive I’d like to see.
