Congratulations on the Society’s first open show in over 10 years, it was a great success. Thank you so much for inviting me to judge and be a part of it. The day clashed with hound day at City of Birmingham so the entry wasn’t huge for hounds but the quality of the dogs present was very good overall making for some hard decisions and I wished we had more than 4 places in the Groups. Thank you so much to my stewards, you were brilliant. There weren’t many available so it was a tag team of different people, but I only noticed because the faces sat at the table and in the ring were different: everything ran really smoothly. Thank you to the exhibitors for your entry and missing out on a Championship show to be there….in the ‘wetting’ rain.

Afghan Hound

1st BPIB, BOB & HPG1 Webb’s Madelion Lady Dementer B. Quality and typey feminine black and tan girl with good muscle condition. Lovely head with good expression. Well sprung pasterns and ribs, and good depth of chest for her age. Super length from hip to hock. Tail was carried a little high in her class but relaxed for the Groups this should improve as she settles and matures. On the move she was straight out and back and showed lovely springy strides in profile. Pleased to award her BPIB & BOB and later HPG1.

1st & BOB Raczka’s Prime Rubin Castor (Imp Hun) D. Lovely typey and masculine red and white 5 year old with good substance and bone. Good head with strong jaw and strong neck into lovely straight front with good width and fill in. Strong pasterns and standing on well padded, neat feet. Nice depth of chest with correct spring to his ribs and well ribbed back to well muscled hindquarters. Moved straight to and fro and super in profile. Stood alone in his breed but pleased to award him BOB and one of those who I wished I’d had a group place for.

1st BOB & HG1 Wilbraham’s Ardlancien Idris D. Super, typey and masculine, workmanlike lad with good bone. Super head and expression, long strong neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm with strong elbows. Took the group on his excellent width and depth of chest with lovely fill in, down to well knuckled feet. Gentle topline and good tuck up with drooping quarters and lovely long tail. Moved well to and fro, and very nicely in profile with super, economical strides. Another standing alone but a very worthy winner. Pleased to award him BOB and HG1.

1st BOB & HG4 Tanner’s Felinoak Griffyn (AI) JW D. Attractive, handsome and balanced, up to size 2½ year old lad with good type and strong bone. Very nice all through with good head, well set, correct length ears and dark eye with appealing expression. Strong neck into well laid shoulders with upper arm setting his forelegs well under and good depth of chest. Standing on tight feet. Level topline held well on the move and gentle rise to his underline leading to well angulated hindquarters. Nicely set and carried tail. Moved well away pinned in very slightly back today but excelled in profile showing lovely reach and drive. Pleased to award him BOB & HG4

1st & BOB Buxton’s Cloudside Xena of Mereblake B. Super, typey bitch still only just 14 months old. Strong and well boned but still feminine with good overall proportions and ground clearance with her forelegs covering the lowest point of her keel. Lovely head and expression, long, clean neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm leading to excellent prosternum. Well ribbed back to short, strong loin and well angulated hindquarters. Harsh coat with bushy eyebrows and cute beard. Moved a little untidy away today, but nicely back and lovely in profile with reach and drive. Sorry there wasn’t a Group placing for her but pleased to award her BOB.

1st & RBOB Buxton’s Wylderarn Ado B. Another pretty, typey, feminine but strong bitch with nice overall proportions, good ground clearance and many of the same qualities as her kennel mate. Good head and expression, prominent forechest, well ribbed back to short, strong loin and well angulated hindquarters. Moved very much the same coming into her own in profile. I just preferred the front construction and foreleg placement of 1 today.

1st BPIB & BOB Mantle’s Bimini Moondance at Rhiewvalley B. Feminine and typey wild boar bitch puppy, just 8 months old, with dark eye, harsh coat and nice beard and moustache. Well laid shoulders into lovely topline and gentle underline leading to excellent hindquarters. Moved very well out and in profile showing reach and drive.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

1st BPIB & HPG2 Pritchard Jones’ Affrhoda Amaryllis B. Lovely, feminine but strong 8 month old puppy with type and quality. Well angulated and muscled with a good coat. Balanced fore and aft with correct, symmetrical ridge. Nice head and strong neck leading to well laid shoulders, straight forelegs and excellent bone, standing on compact feet. Just needing to drop into herself as you’d expect at this age. Moved well to and fro and showed excellent paces in profile. Just a little flighty to go over in her class but still pleased to award her BPIB. She settled as the day went on and put on a lovely performance to take HPG2. I shall watch her career as she matures.

1st & RBOB Pritchard Jones’ Mission Wild Wind Of Luanda at Affrhoda D. Strong, masculine and typey upstanding red wheaten dog just over 2 years old, sire of BPIB. Symmetrical ridge, good head and long, strong, clean neck into well laid shoulders, just needing a little more return of upper arm and depth of chest. Excellent bone, good pasterns and compact feet. Well muscled hindquarters used nicely on the move out, ok back and in profile.

1st & BOB Affrhoda Athiyyah B. Strong but feminine and typey, qualities she has passed on to her daughter, the BPIB. Strong neck into well laid shoulders with good width to her front, standing on neat feet, just prefer a little more upper arm to complete the picture. Nicely sprung ribs carried well back under correct ridge and leading to strong, well muscled loin. Moved out well, ok back and well angulated hindquarters put to excellent use in super profile movement. Preferred the balance of this bitch over the PG winner for BOB.

Norwegian Elkhound

Puppy (1,0)

1st & BPIB Mortimer’s Laakso Reinstorm B. Pretty 9 month old bitch with good type, balance and substance but still feminine. Square in outline with harness mark and dark foreface and ears. Friendly expression, pointed, erect and mobile ears but head still a little unbalanced and yet to finish. Well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm leading to straight forelegs with good bone and standing on neat feet. Short back to moderately angulated hindquarters. Coarse outer coat and dense undercoat, and tightly curled tail. Moved well out and back with slight, equal convergence but just a little unsettled in profile.

1st Mortimer’s Laakso Lumi B. Feminine, typey and balanced bitch with good bone. Well balanced, wedge shaped head with dark eye and line to pointed, mobile ears. Good depth of chest and width in front with strong bone and pasterns. Standing on tight feet. Tail curled over centre line of back. Converged on the move out and back showing drive from her well muscled hindquarters.

1st Cuss’ Norvin Krakjen D. Masculine, balanced and typey lad, square in outline and good harness mark. Lovely, well balanced, wedge shaped head with line from dark eye to ear. Good ruff on strong, clean neck. Moderately angulated fore and aft with excellent depth of chest. Well sprung ribs carried well back to short, strong loin would just prefer a little more width all through. Converged equally to and fro and moved very well in profile. Pushed hard for RBOB.

1st BOB & HG2 Williams’ Laakso Kaunis at Akritiko B. Judged this girl as a puppy giving her BPIB and BB, so pleased she is living up to her early promise: Super 2 year old bitch with femininity, balance, type and quality. Just longer than square with a lovely expression and balanced, wedged shaped head. Dark foreface and well set, mobile ears. Powerful, clean neck into well laid shoulders and good depth of chest. Well ribbed back into strong loin with length maybe expected in a bitch. Level topline leading to moderately angulated, well made hindquarters. Tightly curled tail over the centre of the back. Nicely marked coarse coat with dense undercoat. Converged equally away and back and strode out well with freedom and ease in profile. Pleased to award her BOB and later HG2, although she pushed hard for HG1, it was a close decision.

2nd & RBOB Brown’s Ch Laakso Cara B. Another Super bitch with femininity, balance, type and quality. Also just longer than square with a lovely expression and balanced, wedged shaped head. Many of the same remarks apply. Particularly liked her straight feet with tight, well arched toes. Just preferred the width and coat of 1 today. At 8½ years old she is a credit to her owner.

1st & BOB Whiting’s Glanbeuno Toute Seule B. Well proportioned, balanced and typey, white and sable bitch. Slightly domed head with well set and carried ears of good length and friendly expression. Well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm down to straight forelegs. Level topline with short loin leading to well angulated hindquarters finished off with a well set and carried tail. Harsh coat with thick undercoat. Moved well in all directions. Pleased to award her BOB.

2nd & RBOB Spencer’s Hightimbers Peter Pan D. White and grizzle dog 6 months younger than 1 and giving a little away in maturity. Well proportioned head with slight dome and well set ears. Good depth of chest and level topline. A little untidy out and back and not quite the drive of 1 in profile.

2nd Cuss’ Norvin Orkla D. Norwegian Elkhound. Nice, well muscled lad, just longer than square in outline. Pointed, mobile ears and dark eye with slight eyeline to ears. Strong, clean neck with ruff down to good depth of chest and short loin. Converged on the move and steady in profile.

Veteran (7,0)

1st & BHV Lloyd’s Sail On Sailor to Penwincoed D. Whippet. Lovely, typey and balanced 7½ year old fawn dog with a nice head and expression. Well laid shoulders down to straight forelegs well sprung pasterns and neat feet. Curvy top and under lines with good depth of chest. Moved straight out and back and showed nice driving paces in profile with freedom and ease.
