I’m extremely grateful to have been invited to judge Afghan Hounds, Beagles and Rhodesian Ridgebacks at this top drawer show! The show had a very summer European feel: excellent grounds, great ring sizes and the weather to match! The hard working committee put on a great event! I was thrilled with my entries in all 3 breeds and the quality of the entries is something I will remember for a long time.
Afghan Hound Junior (5,4)
1. Newton’s Cloudside Red Sky over Shimalma. Lots to like about this young dog, he has a great frame to continue to mature into. Excellent front construction. Well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Level topline and good fall away at the croup. Tail carried too far over the back for my liking. At times difficult to assess on the move as he was playing up for his handler, but he did show glimpses of reach and drive when settled in profile.
Afghan Hound Post Graduate (3,1)
1. Lancashire & O’Donnell’s Drishaun Autumnal King. I found this almost 2 year old male excellent for proportions and balance. Well chiselled head and correct eye shape giving a desirable ‘looking through’ expression. Excellent front construction, elbows sat well beneath the body, with good depth and fill of chest. Textbook topline, level over the back with good fall away, complimented by a well set and carried, ringed tail. Well bent hind quarters and show in excellent muscular condition. All came together on the move where I felt no other could match him today. He covers ground effortlessly with springy gait and is sound up and back. One of many of this kennels shown in excellent condition that I judged today. BOB.
2. Lancashire & O’Donnell’s Drishaun Daucus Carota. Litter sister to 1 built on a slightly more moderate frame. Feminine and good for size. Perhaps not quite coping in the almost 26-degree heat as well as her brother but still has lots of nice qualities. Excellent head, eyes and expression. Like her brother, very good shape to topline. Moved well, but not quite covering the ground as well as the winner today.
Afghan Hound Open (4) Difficulty splitting this class, particularly the first 2.
1. O’Donnell’s Ch Drishaun Faith Is Like A Lily for Javidan JW. An 8 year old brindle bitch, with a pleasing outline. Excellent return of upper arm, level topline and well angulated hind quarters which she really used to her advantage. It was her movement that won her this class. She really opens up on the move, covering ground effortlessly and defying her age. In excellent condition. RBOB.
2. Lancashire & O’Donnell’s Ch Drishaun Fair As A Lily JW ShCEx OSW. Self masked cream and brother to the winner of this class. On first impression I preferred him for his length of leg and distinct shape of topline, although he is slightly longer through the body than 1. Really pleasing to go over, excellent front with good depth and spring of rib and balanced in the rear too. Not quite covering ground as well as the winner today, but held his shape well and was sound up and back.
3. Drishaun Carruba.
Beagle Puppy (5,2)
1. Goldberg’s Mackhovie Astra at Molesend. This feminine tan and white 6 month old puppy has a nice frame to mature into. She is good for size and proportions and is balanced in front and rear angulation. Very sound in all directions and when fully settled she has great front reach and drive. BP.
2. Leader’s Davricard Artemis. Tri coloured bitch, slightly stronger through than the winner of this class. Appreciated her for her excellent lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Good depth and fill of chest. Correct topline and well angulated hind quarters. Very sound up and back, but not quite covering the ground as well as the winner.
3. Smith’s Poppyville Forever Dancing to Sanbryvale’s.
Beagle Junior (2)
1. Goldberg’s Daffodil The Gift Of Nature at Molesend (Imp Deu). A feminine tan and white bitch, really appealed for her balanced head and soft expression. Good depth and fill of chest, and level topline. Could perhaps have a little more return of upper arm for ideal front construction, despite this moved very well up and back and kept her shape in profile, using her rear quarters well.
2. Arden’s Madika Shine On JW. A smart bitch, shorter in loin than 1 which I preferred. Would prefer her to be more refined in head. Level topline held on the move whilst covering good ground. True coming towards, but would like more width in the rear, moved around the ring with enthusiasm, covering good ground. She is very much a show girl.
Beagle Post Graduate (5,2)
1. Goldberg’s Molesend Linnet. A very smart tan and white bitch. Excellent size, proportions and substance. Balanced head, soft expression and correct ear set. Very good neck into shoulder. Level in topline with good depth of chest and front fill. Rear quarters compliment front with good width and strength of thighs. Correct set and carriage of tail. Moved with such a free ground covering gait, holding her outline throughout and was sound on the up and back. BOB.
2. Statham’s Brigam Tainted Love. Tan and white bitch pleasing for size, but not the ground clearance of 1. Balanced head, well set ears. Would have liked more front angulation. Great rear quarters, well angled and muscled. Moved well coming towards, but tended to drop her head in profile spoiling her outline.
3. Peterson’s troopersway Athena.
Beagle Limit (3)
1. Scarlett’s Vanitonia Enchanted over Michelroy JW. An athletic hound, with good length of leg. Slightly wide set in eye which spoils her expression. Well angulated front and rear. Could be slightly shorter in coupling. A very active mover, good reach and drive in profile holding a level topline.
2. Peterson’s Troopersway Zeus. A well put together dog, but on too large a frame. Balanced In front and rear angulation and well coupled, good tail set and carriage. Could be more refined in head and neck. Moved ok in all directions.
3. Smith’s Vigor Luscious for Sandbryvale’s.
Beagle Open (5,2)
1. Statham’s Molesend Jetsam at Brigham. Tri coloured male of correct size and substance. Was the most put together in this class. Excellent front with well laid shoulder and lengthy upper arm, good depth of chest and front fill. Balanced in rear angulation and well muscled. Well ribbed back with short loin and level topline. Well set and carried tail. Moved very well in all directions.
2. Peterson’s Troopersway Gladiator JW ShCM. This almost 11 year old male is well constructed throughout, but I’d like less of him all through, particularly in head and neck. Good depth of chest and front fill. Well made in front and rear. Moved well, but not quite as active as 1.
3. Smith’s Vigor Luscious for Sandbryvale’s.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy (4,2)
A difficult class, 2 puppies different in type, I’ve no doubt they could easily swap places on another day.
1. Picton & Ince’s Joliheim Truly Scrumptious. Preferred over 2 for proportions. Great for size and substance and has time on her side to mature. Preferred croup, tail set and rear angulation to 2. Was a little playful on the move today but once settled has a nice stride and held her topline well. BP.
2. Catharell’s Kinabula’s Master Of Joy. Preferred his head, neck and front construction to 1, thankfully has time to drop into his frame a little. Was more settled moving, and like the winner had a good stride, but preferred the topline of 1 moving and rear angulation.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Junior (5,1)
1. Barker’s Delianza She’s Timeless. Caught my eye in this class for her free supple stride on the initial go around. Mature for her age with pleasing depth and fill of chest. Excellent proportions and balanced in front and rear angulation. Lengthy, strong neck leading into gently arched loin, and held her shape well on the move. Moved with reach and drive in profile and sound up and back. Made the challenge for BOB difficult. RBOB.
2. Akers’ Carlincox Laters Taters. Another quality bitch, more scopey than the winner. Not quite the headpiece of 1, but used her well angulated front and rear well on the move showing sound movement up and back with a ground covering action in profile.
3. Philips’ Shakina Cotton Candy.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Post Graduate (4,1)
1. Kinabula’s Making Magick for Faahac JW. A male of good size and proportions. Slightly strong in head for my liking, but still the most balanced head in this class. Well laid shoulders and enough upper arm. Good depth and spring of rib, carried well back. Well angulated rear quarters, but would prefer a lower set tail. Moved well up and down and was active in profile, could hold a firmer topline moving.
2. Phillips’ Shakina Bee Light In The Dark. More scopey than the winner of this class. A little narrow in head for my liking. Correct ears and excellent neck. She has good angulation in front but needs to drop and fill out in chest as tends to stand and move a little narrow at the elbow. Well shaped topline. Preferred her smoothness of croop and tail set to 1. Moved well in profile using rear quarters to cover ground.
3. Phillips’ Alexia Lyonesse.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Open (9,4) I’m not surprised to see that both 1&2 have their champion titles, excellent representatives of the breed!
1. Rhodes’ Ch Priorpark You Coda Be Mine of Metalrock JW ShCEx OSW. A cracking dog who is of excellent proportions and substance painting a really pleasing overall outline. Balanced head, excellent neck into well laid shoulders. Good depth and spring to chest with pleasing shape to topline, and textbook hindquarter angulation and well set tail. Although I’d prefer slight more upper arm this does not restrict him. On the move everything comes together, he is accurate up and down and covers ground effortlessly in profile and is so light on his feet. Despite the almost 30 degree heat he didn’t show any signs of tiring in the breed and best in show! BOB and thrilled to watch him go on to win BIS.
2. Nolan’s Ch Priorpark Pearl Of Wisdom for Rumialana JW. A quality feminine bitch that I found difficult to fault. Appealed for her balance, proportions and smoothness of outline. Excellent head, long strong neck leading into a well put together front, good angulation with depth, fill and spring of rib. Pleasing rise to loin into well set croup and tail set. Hindquaters to match her front, well muscled and when all comes together, moved well in all directions.
3. Akers’ Carlincox Knock ‘Em Off JW.
