Devon Country show premier open - 23rd May 2026

All 6 verities of Dachshunds

Firstly, I would like to thank the society for inviting me to judge at this extremely well run show, and thank you to my 2 wonderful stewards for keeping the ring running smoothly. And many thanks to all that entered under me.

Dachshund – Mini Long Haired

P (2, 1) 1 Mr & Mrs Stevens - Crownlake Dreamer Weaver on Sidburyhill. A 7 month black & cream bitch. A good mouth, nice head with good dark eye, well placed ears, nice length of neck leading into fairly well laid shoulders, with adequate angulation, would prefer a longer keel & rib which leads to a slightly longer than ideal loin, a little rump high at the moment, rear angulation okay, nice coat starting to come through and moved out well with good reach BP.

PG (4, 1) 1 Mrs G Westaway – Minard Whispering Angel at Trerance JW. A 2 year old red bitch. A pretty little compact bitch with a good head and a lovely dark eye, good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders of good angulation, good ground clearance, good length of rib and a short loin, well angulated hind quarters, moved out well but lost topline a little on the move, good coat not overdone. 2 Mrs K Turton – Cornwalldaxs Midnight Star at Damoradaxies, a 2 year old shaded cream dog, a little on the bigger side, but lovely houndy head with good dark pigment and eye, good length of neck and a prominent prosternum, well laid shoulder but could do with a little more length of upper arm, level topline, good rib and loin, well-muscled hind quarters, but a little too long in the rear pastern.

L (5) 1 Miss J Bater – All for Show. A 2 year old shaded red dog. Nice head leading into well laid shoulders of good angulation, a prominent prosternum but would like more ground clearance, good length of rib and okay length of loin with a level topline, nicely angulated and well-muscled hind quarters which gave good drive, good feet front and rear BOS. 2 Mrs P Cox – Dolyharp Grace Kelly at Cheritondax JW. A 20 month old shaded cream bitch in good coat. A pretty little bitch with feminine head, good dark pigment and a lovely dark eye, well laid shoulders but slightly short in upper arm, good tight elbows and a nice oval thorax, a little short in keel, okay length of rib and slightly longer than I would like in loin, well angulated rear quarters giving good drive.

O (5, 1) 1 Miss P Butler – Ch Minard out of the Darque from Drymore JW. A lovely compact 5 year old black & tan bitch. Lovely houndy head on a good length of neck which leads into a well placed and correctly angulated shoulder, a good prominent prosternum, good length of keel and rib with a nice short loin, well angled hind quarters, moved with good reach and drive, shown in good condition and a lovely coat BOB. 2 Mrs S Way – Raylines Ways ad Means JW. A 2 year old cream bitch of good proportions, lovely dark well shaped eyes and good dark pigment, a pretty feminine head, with well placed ears, ok length of neck leads into well laid shoulders with tight elbows and good feet, ok ground clearance, good length of rib and short loin, kept a level topline on move, good strong hind quarters which allowed for good drive. RBOB.

Dachshund - Mini Wirehaired

PG (1) 1 Mrs B J Rose – Rozamie Reflection of Rosencrantz. A 13 month old chocolate wild boar bitch. A lovely head with good pigmentation around the eyes and nose and good mouth, leading into a good length of neck and correctly angulated shoulders with good ground clearance, a good prominent prosternum already developing, good length of keel and ribs with a short loin, nicely angulated hind quarters which gave good drive. Good harsh coat developing. BOB

L (1) 1 Mrs J Kilroy - Janacop Sweet Child of Mine. A 12 month old red dog with good harsh coat, nice head and good dark eye, adequate furnishings, well placed ear leading into a good length of neck, good shoulder although I would prefer to be laid back a little more, nice tight elbows good feet and good length of keel, good length of rib and a nice short loin with correctly laid crop, good hind quarters toed in slightly on the move on the day. RBOB & BOS (preferred head and prosternum of BOB).

O (2 1) 1 Mrs B J Rose – Marryline Martha with Rosencrantz JW. A 23 month old wild boar bitch, an ok head with good dark eyes, leads into a slight shorter than ideal neck with well angulated shoulders, which could be laid further back, ok ribbing with a slightly longer than ideal loin, well muscled hind quarters with good angulation. Good harsh coat, good feet and enough ground clearance.

Dachshund – Mini Smooth haired

P (2 1) 1 Mrs S Ergis – Siouxline Trojan. A 7 month old chocolate and tan brindle dog. This puppy has a beautiful houndy & masculine head, lovely dark eyes and well placed ears and a good mouth, a good neck leads into a well placed shoulder of good angulation with a lovely prominent prosternum, a long keel and good length of rib, a tad long in the loin, but good level topline, good tail set on a well place croup, very good rear angulation, good feet and shown in lovely condition. BP & RBOB

PG (3) 1 Mrs S Ergis – Siouxline Trinity. Litter sister to previous winner. A 7 month old red brindle bitch. A pretty little bitch with equally lovely head and front to her brother, not quite the rear angulation as him and a little bum high at the moment, toed in slightly when moving away. 2 Mrs N & Mr J Woodhouse – Kenleap Moon Hero. A 21 month chocolate and tan dog. Presented in good condition, an okay head, a little short in neck, a good prominent prosternum, a well laid back shoulder, but a little short in upper arm, nice tight elbows, a little too deep in chest and a shorter than ideal keel, making him a little short in rib and a little long in the loin, a good topline held on the move, ok rear angulation but a little short in the lower thigh. Good tight feet.

L (2) 1 Miss K J Small - Glynlythe's Heirloom for Devondax JW. A 2 year old red bitch, a little overweight, but a nice head with good mouth, dark eyes and well placed ears, a lovely front, with good angulation and moved out with good reach and drive from the rear, kept her topline on the move. 2 Mrs N & Mr J Woodhouse – Kenleap Moon Hero see previous class.

O (5) 1 Mrs S M Ergis - Brogansian Battlecry for Siouxline. A red brindle dog of 20 months. Sire of both winner of puppy and post grad’ and has definitely put his stamp on his son, he has a lovely houndy head, good dark eye and ear set, nice length of neck leads into well placed shoulders, slightly short in upper arm, but good tight elbows, a good prominent prosternum and good length of keel, good ground clearance, a slightly long loin, but of correct 2 to 1 proportions, good hind quarters, but would like a tad more length of second thigh, lovely tight feet and had the best movement in the class. BOB. 2 Miss E Ashby - Midlandbulls Willow at Jaxinorydax. A 4 year old red bitch. A compact little bitch shown in good condition, a nice head with dark eye and okay ear set, a good length of neck, good prominent prosternum, okay shoulder position and good tight elbows, good length on rib and short loin, a little straight in the hind quarters BOS.

L (1) 1 H M & C Pughe & Fraser - Stanegate Sonja. A 14 month old wild boar bitch. A lovely head with good dark eye, strong jaw, good furnishings, good ear set, all on a lovely length of neck into a well-placed shoulder, good prominent prosternum, good tight elbows, good ground clearance, nice tight front feet, good length of keel, nice well sprung and long rib and short loin, kept a level topline on the move, good tail set on well set croup, good hind quarters although slightly soft still, good harsh coat. BOB

Dachshund – Smooth Haired

P (2) 1 Miss T Somerton - Jaxinorydax Gossip Gal. A shaded red bitch of 7 months. A nice bitch with a lovely head of correct proportions, good mouth, nice dark eye of good shape, well set ears, leading into a good length of neck, well placed shoulders with nice tight elbows, a good prominent prosternum, good length of keel and correct ground clearance, good length of rib and short loin, kept a good topline both stacked and on the move, would prefer a bit more angulation in the hind quarters but moved parallel front and rear. 2 Miss E Ashby - Jaxinorydax Causing Chaos. Litter sister to 1, 7 month black and tan bitch. Nice head, good eye, slightly high ear set, correct mouth, good length of neck leading into a well laid shoulder, good prominent prosternum, good length of keel and rib, too long in the loin and rather bum high at the moment, soft topline, and a little straight in the hind quarters. Tended to paddle at the front when moving.

PG (3, 1) 1 Mr T & Mrs S Rycroft - Raajput's Dancer Divaa with Trisensara JW. A 19 month old black and tan bitch. A nice neat bitch not over done in anyway, a lovely head with good dark eye, nice ear set, good length of neck, good angulation of shoulder although a little forward with nice tight elbows, correct ground clearance, good length of keel, nice length of rib, short loin, good topline and nice rear angulation, moved out well. BOS 2 Miss E Ashby - Jaxinorydax Knox The Sox Off. Litter brother to 1 & 2 in puppy. A 7 month old black and tan dog. Still very much the raw baby and already a big lad, I liked his head, good mouth, dark well shaped eye, well set ears, on a nice length of neck, prominent prosternum already developing, a good shoulder with tight elbows, good ground clearance, a good length of keel and rib, okay loin, fairly good hind quarters although a little long in the rear pastern. Moved well, BP

L (2) 1 Mr T & Mrs S Rycroft - Chidax Sahara Sand by Trisensara JW. 2.5 year old red bitch. A compact bitch with a nice feminine head, good dark eye, nice ears well placed, a good neck, flowing into a good shoulder although a tad too far forward, an okay prosternum with a good length of keel, a good depth of chest but still good ground clearance, a well sprung and good length rib, with a strong loin, and kept a good level topline on the move, nice hind quarters with correct angulation, moved well with drive. 2 Miss E Ashby - Rayol Pumpkin Pie at Jaxinorydax. A shaded red of 2 years. A nice sized bitch, with a lovely houndy head, good eye, well placed ear and a good mouth, nice length of neck but didn’t flow into the withers like 1, a good prominent prosternum, and a well placed shoulder with good angulation, a bit short in the keel, and not as much ground clearance as 1, a good topline, an okay loin, fairly good hind quarters but didn’t move with as much drive as 1.

O (2) 1 Mr T & Mrs S Rycroft - Jacksondax Hornet Hurrah at Trisensara JW ShCEx OSW. A 4 year old black and tan dog. I can see why he’s a ShCEx, a well balanced dog, with the most lovely nature, I said “a very smart chap” in my notes on the day and I was very pleased that he went on to win the Hound group and then took the top honour of Best in Show! He’s got a lovely masculine well-proportioned head with good strong jaw and lovely dark almond eyes, a lovely length of neck which flows nicely into the withers, a good prosternum, and a well laid shoulder, a good length of keel, excellent ground clearance, a nice smooth underline and lovely level topline held on the move, good hind quarters with correct angulation and plenty of drive when moving. BOB 2 Miss E Ashby - Rayol Dallas Cowboys at Jaxinorydax JW. A shaded red dog of 2.5 years. Sire to the 3 puppies. He has a nice head with a good mouth, nice dark eye and well placed and sized ears, a good length of neck, okay prosternum, good angulation of shoulder but a little far forward, okay length of keel, with well sprung ribs, nice topline, okay loin, lacks a little length of upper thigh and too long in the rear pasterns. Dachshund – Long haired

P (1) 1 Mrs J Cooper & Mr A Hendren - Bronia Leonardo. A shaded red dog of 10 months. A lot to like about this young boy, a well balanced and proportioned dog with a lovely silky coat. A nice head with good mouth, eyes and well placed ears, a good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders, a good prominent prosternum already developing, good ground clearance and a good length of keel, good length of well sprung ribs and a good short loin, a nice underline and level topline kept on the move a well placed croup and correct tail set, with correctly angulated hind quarters, moved with drive although a tad close when moving away. BP and very happy to see he also took HPG2 as well.

PG (2) Mrs A Partridge - Ranglewood Xmas Cracker to Riveroyal. A black and tan dog of 17 months. A very smart dog, with good balance, lovely bone and a super temperament. I liked his head which is of good proportions with a good strong jaw, nice dark eye of correct shape, well placed and sized ears, with a good length of neck, a good prominent prosternum, good ground clearance, a fairly good shoulder and good tight elbows, a good length of keel, with long well sprung ribs, a little long in body and loin, good hind quarters, although a little long in rear pasterns. A good silky coat and presented in good condition, RBOB & BOS 2 Mrs J Cooper & Mr A Hendren - Bronia Leonardo

 L (2, 1) 1 Mrs A Partridge - Pettigans Viva La Vida by Riveroyal JW. A shaded red bitch of 2 years 9 months. This lovely bitch really caught my eye when she came into the ring. She has a lovely balanced overall shape, with nothing over done, and a beautiful shinny coat again not over done, I could quite easily see her doing a days work in undergrowth without it be an issue. She has a feminine head of correct proportions, nice dark eye of good shape, well placed and sized ears, a nice length of neck leading into well placed and angulated shoulders, a good prominent prosternum, nice tight elbows and lovely tidy feet, good ground clearance, a nice long keel and a lovely clean underline, good length and well sprung ribs with a good short loin, a lovey topline and correctly angulated hind quarters, moved out well. I was happy to give her BOB.
