Chippenham and District Canine Society Premier Open Show

5th April 2026

Bracco Italiano, German Wirehaired Pointer, Hungarian Vizsla, Retriever (Golden), Spaniel (Clumber), Spaniel (English Springer), Spaniel (Welsh Springer), German Shorthaired Pointer, Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling), Weimaraner.

My first thanks, as always, must go to Vikki Marshall and the rest of the lovely committee for asking me to judge at their show. It was a lovely greeting and fabulous lunch. I was informed this was a new venue and personally I think it really worked. There was enough for 10 rings, with enough room to see the exhibits move well, even with the large breeds. Many congratulations on a well organised and enjoyable show.

Yet again, I would also like to extend my thanks to my stewards Russell and Noah. I could not have asked for any more from them. From a well-marked up catalogue, through to fantastically organised, run ring with perfect information all the way through. Many thanks to you both.

As these are not my main breeds, I am always humbled by those who came under me. I was so pleased to see so many went on to do particularly well in the main and puppy groups, respectively. I was most pleased with many of the exhibits that came under me, with many, in my opinion, hitting several aspects of their respective breed standards, well. Movement was not bad at all. Thank you all, who came under me, especially those whom I have seen before. Also, it was lovely to see a Best Reserve Best of Breed Group.

Bracco Italiano

Class: 1 – Post graduate (1,0)

1. 3 – Russell’s BRACCHINI’S BIT OF CRUMPET FOR FRAULYNZWAY – bitch of 6 months, dressed in predominantly orange with roaning coat. Body proportions correct for age, with a promising outline giving an attractive and typical appearance. Feminine head, appropriately finer in type, with correct developing proportions. Pleasing lighter eye colour of dark ochre, in keeping with coat colour, contributing to a soft and typical expression that was only emphasised by lovely workings to the narrowing zygomatic arch. super clean in cheek. Head proportions in keeping with rest of charge, showing slight rise to stop and good prominence to occiput. Leathers well set, of correct length. moderate in neck showing presence of dewlap, but not overly prominent. This transitioned well into well-defined withers. Top of shoulder blades showed good separation. Forelegs strong and straight. Elbow reaching depth to chest, showing a balanced spring to rib. At present lean and very athletic, as expected at this stage, and should develop further substance with maturity. Shows good balance throughout, with construction already coming together well. Front and rear angulation in harmony, allowing for efficient movement. Sound on the away and back and particularly pleasing on the move in profile, showing very good drive for one so young. A happy, outgoing puppy, who clearly enjoyed her time in the ring, which was a pleasure to watch. Overall, a promising youngster with correct breed characteristics, good movement, and a delightful temperament. BP.

Class: 2 – Open (2,0)

1. 2 – Critchley’s SH CH BRACCORIONS NEVER SAY NEVER JW – this 7- year-old bitch was instantly eye-catching. A fully mature chestnut and white bitch of outstanding quality, type and balance. A complete exhibit, who immediately impressed. I was not surprised to see lettering both before and after her kennel name. More solid in construction than 2nd, no doubt aided by maturity, yet still retaining femininity throughout. She presents an almost square outline, with a super topline and excellent overall balance. Much appeal in head, refined yet full of breed character, long and narrow with the desired divergent planes, complemented by a lovely large, oval eye and regal, intelligent expression. Tightly lidded eye, with lovely rise to brow that only enhanced the lovely expression. Almost symmetrical mask emphasised the gentle stop and slightly arched muzzle and lovely head proportions. Excellent in nose. Correct length of ears and a texture to leathers. These hung neatly and closely next to strong, well-muscled neck flowing cleanly and freely into shoulders of lovely construction. These were well back with width between blades. Balance seen in scapula and upper arm proportions allowing for an excellent front assembly, with good prominence to forechest and return of upper arm, placing elbows correctly beneath her. Straight forelegs with slightly sloping pasterns. Down at elbow, with excellent spring to rib. Strong topline continuing into a short, powerful loin, with good width to croup and length. The point of shoulder to point of buttock, slightly longer than height at withers. Balanced angulation fore and aft, with a good turn at stifle. Excellent width to upper and second thigh, providing well-muscled hindquarters. On the move everything clicked effortlessly. From the up and back straight and true, with width and ease. On the around excellent reach in front and strong drive behind. To me, this is what I was looking for in a Bracco Italiano and was very happy to give her BOB. Beautiful bitch.

2. 1 – Critchley’s BRACCIANO NOW OR NEVER JW – 2-year-old bitch that I have had the opportunity to go over previously. I liked her previously and that still stands. She was just unlucky to come up against a very lovely 1st. A great deal of her qualities have been improved upon as she has matured. Therefore, most of my previous sentiments still stand. Stood in an orange roan suit and undocked, she made for a pleasing outline. Well off in profile showing a slightly off square silhouette. Very typey. Appealing for female body type and head construction, and yet still a picture of strength even at 2-years. Pretty in head with slight curve to muzzle that was deep, showing the narrowness needed at the zygomatic arch that was well worked. Gentle rise to stop, lovely expression, that was framed well by pigmentation that matched coat also. Divergent in planes that ended in a large, spongy nose. Correct in head proportions and median line ever visible. Ears hanging close and neatly next to cheeks and a dewlap that was unexaggerated. Excellent strength in moderate neck. Well laid shoulders and good proportions to upper arm and scapula that transitioned into forelegs that were strong and straight. Chest of good width, just reaching elbow, strong loin and slight in tuck up. Angulation of rear balanced with that of forequarters. Good bend at stifle. Good width to upper thigh that has improved and certainly well-muscled throughout that was used on the move. Stylish on the move, showing good drive on the around. Maintained topline well. pleasing in footfall in profile. Tight in toes which was lovely to see. Could see why there were two important letters after her name. Would prefer a little more substance as she is developing, but she still has plenty of time and the promise is very much there. RBOB.

German Shorthaired Pointer

Class: 3 – Puppy (0)

Class: 4 – Post graduate (2,1)

1. 5 – Russell’s FRAULYNZWAY HAYLEY’S COMET – A nice quality German Shorthaired Pointer bitch, not quite four years of age. Mainly dark with white flecking, she presented a strong yet feminine outline and was well balanced throughout. Her head was a particular virtue, with a broad skull, correct proportions and well-set ears, complemented by a medium almond-shaped dark brown eye giving a pleasing, expression. A clean neck of good length flowing into well laid shoulders. She was well put together and a straight front, standing on good bone and tight, neat feet. She had a deep, well sprung chest with good forechest, ribs carried well back and a defined tuck-up. Her topline was lovely, firm and well maintained both standing and on the move. This led into a well angled croup of good length and a correctly set tail. She is well muscled throughout, showing both strength and condition. In profile she was balanced with correct angulation fore and aft. On the move she showed width behind on the away and went around the ring with real propulsion. A very pleasing bitch of quality and type, and well worthy RBOB.

Class: 5 – Open (1,0)

1. 6 – Russell’s FRAULYNZWAY LIGHTENING BOLT JW – A male of not quite four years of age, and immediately recognisable as a litter mate to the winner of Post Graduate, sharing many of the same virtues. He was instantly eye catching and appealing on entering the ring, in his predominantly dark and ticked coat. Looking like he is in peak condition presenting a larger physique, but not overdone. Beautifully strong masculine outline with overall balance easy to appreciate. He has a very appealing strong male head of good shape and width. Almost vertical in drop of lips under prominent brown nose, on powerful jaws. Length to muzzle and gradual rise of nasal bone, giving the appearance of a stop. Entirety of head in keeping with rest of charge. A gentle expression that came from medium, well lidded, dark brown eye. Surrounded by pigmentation in keeping with his dark coat. ears set on high, and close to head and of correct reach when offered to nose. These adorned the top of a well set on, strong, clean neck of medium reach. This seamlessly flowed cleanly into well laid shoulders. Strength to his front construction was easy to see, supported by good length of upper arm. Straight, well boned limbs and tight, neat feet. He was down at elbow and width to chest in keeping with his overall balance. Well sprung ribs carried well back to a short, strong loin and he is shown in firm, well-muscled condition, indicative of his age. A super topline is a notable feature, remaining firm both standing and, on the move, leading to a well-set tail. His rear quarters are particularly strong, with excellent width to thigh and a well-turned stifle, giving him the drive that is very desirable. On the move he covered the ground freely with good reach. In profile he is a well-balanced dog, with a lovely relationship of neck to body and good angulation throughout. maintaining his topline. A lot to like about this exhibit and was pushed by his litter mate for top honours. However, his overall appearance, balance and excellent drive enabled me to give him BOB.

Class: 7 – Post graduate (0)

Class: 8 – Open (1,0)

1. 7 – Morris & Evans’s BEANALREM GWYNDU – dog of almost 2-years of age, that I have previously had the pleasure of going over and thought he had a great deal to like. I said before that he was one to watch and I think he is starting to show that promise. All the superlatives I used before are still correct about him, just…more! Slightly taller in appearance, but still in keeping with breed standard. Although standing alone again, this gave him a great deal of room to move and show his ring presence. In head, his good proportions are seen with strength to foreface. Head trimmings starting to come in a little stronger now, but didn’t hide his medium sized, darker hazel eye. Pigmentation to eye trim and nose, of darkest black, matched his dark coat well. Seamless lines throughout allowed a strong neck of good reach to enter a strong masculine body. Strength was certainly the key word for this boy, as it needed to be to cover a well boned cast. When you talk about a ‘dog being a dog’ this one certainly is! Down at elbow and ribs extend well back to a firm loin, presenting a lovely, slight fall in excellent topline. Strong over loin and width across croup. Strong in wide thighs, which have improved well since our last outing. Good rear angulation, seen from bend at stifles. Well done to his handler as he, yet again, athletically took to the ring with excellent drive. The only issue on the day was not of his doing, but other dogs distracting from other rings. However, much more contained on the move in the group, allowing him to show himself off well. On the up and back also showed good width. He was still presented in excellent coat. he is still only 2, so still has plenty of potential to fulfil. Well done. BOB.

BOB - Morris & Evans’s BEANALREM GWYNDU (from Class 8 Open)

Hungarian Vizsla

A lovely standard of exhibits on show, throughout every class.

Class: 9 – Puppy (2,0)

1. 14 – Keily’s DEBIAN DIONYSUS FOR RUAMADRA – 7-month dog that showed plenty of promise and type. Well off in the stack at his present stage of development. Temperament/ disposition was excellent—confident, biddable, and affectionate, willing to carry out the work asked of him, which is essential for a working gundog. The head is a strong feature. For me, very typical of the breed. Well balanced and in good proportion to the body, with a moderately broad skull and a gentle median line. Stop moderate, leading into a well-developed foreface with excellent workings of muzzle. The muzzle is of good length, clean and fairly deep, with tight lips, contributing to the desired noble and intelligent expression. This tapered well. Eyes well set, complementing the overall softness and alertness. Altogether, a very pleasing and correct head, showing lovely development for one so young. Balanced in reach of neck that flowed well into well laid shoulders, of good proportions. Chest is just down to the elbow, with adequate width to the forehand. Tuck-up is well defined, giving the correct outline. He carries a very good topline, firm and level, both standing and in motion and displays lovely overall balance. The croup is well formed, with the correct slope, flowing into appropriate tail carriage. Rear angulation and proportions well in tune with fore. Balanced width of thigh to rest of charge. He moved particularly well around the ring, showing the free-flowing, yet purposeful action, covering the ground with ease and maintaining his outline. Although a great deal to like already, he has a little maturing to do, but at 7-months, he is already on the right track. A well-constructed youngster who combines breed type with soundness and quality. A deserving BP, and I was delighted to watch him go on to be awarded PGrp 1. Very best of luck with his continued development.

2. 21 – Warnes’s DEBIAN DEFINITELY MAYBE – 7-month bitch and litter mate to 1st. Similar in overall type for many aspects. Her head is much more refined and feminine and well proportioned. Skull moderately broad with a gentle medial line, and a moderate stop. Excellent chiselling below an eye of moderate size. These were a shade darker than coat and blended impeccably. She had the most genteel expression, which I really enjoyed. Lips are tight. A pleasing head which clearly reflects her sex. Strength to neck that entered in to a sound base with ease. This showed off the well angulated shoulders. Chest was touching elbow, with good width. Ribs showing excellent spring and decent in loin strength. Width across croup was evident and a balance in width to upper and second thigh. Rear angulation was appealing. On the move, she had width behind on the up and back and on the around showed correct footfall. However, this lovely youngster could benefit from increased confidence and strengthening through the topline as she matures. She did not display quite the same enthusiasm in the ring on this occasion, appearing a little timid, though this should improve with confidence and maturity. She is only 7 months and has plenty of time on her side. I am sure she will grow with every show.

Class: 10 – Post graduate (5,1)

1. 8 – Ball & Fry’s LISTERLO GOOD AS GOLD – An attractive 3-year-old feminine exhibit who appealed for her overall balance and proportions, presenting a pleasing outline and shown in good condition, with the correct rich golden-russet coat. Head a strong point, well made and clean, with lovely planes, width between ears, the skull just slightly longer than the foreface and a moderate stop, giving a typical and pleasing expression. Ears of good length and fine texture, set well and lying close to the cheeks. Neck of good length, clean and slightly arched, flowing smoothly into well-placed shoulders. Particularly liked her front assembly, the best in the class, with a straight front, good bone and clear prominence of prosternum. Forearm of good length, firm pasterns and neat, well-knit feet. A well-developed body of good depth of chest and forechest. Decent spring to ribs. Topline remaining firm and level, with well-defined withers, giving strength without losing balance. Well held through the loin and strongly muscled over the quarters, with a correct tail set. Hindquarters soundly made, with good width of thigh, moderate angulation and hocks well let down, giving a pleasing balance to front and rear. Moved quite well, going freely and with purpose, covering the ground with an easy stride and maintaining her topline on the move.

2. 19 – Priestley’s ELTRYM SHOOTING STAR – 14-month-old bitch. A promising young exhibit who made a strong bid for 1st, only just losing out on the day. Presented an overall pleasing outline with a good topline, which she maintained well both standing and on the move. Head shows good length and is feminine in type. Another with a nice expression, with shade of eye in keeping with rest of exhibit. Medial furrow dissecting, showing a nice gentle rise. Pigmentation to nose and eye trim in keeping with coat. Correct in ear placement that hung neatly and close to a neck of length, clean and suitably arched, flowing into well-placed and angulated shoulders. Decent in bone and neat feet. Down at elbow. More positive in hindquarters, where she shows good width through the back end and upper thigh, with developing muscle that will no doubt strengthen further with age. well off for rear angulation also. Carries herself well over the loin and her topline remains a consistent feature. On the move, went well on the up and back, showing a true, straightforward action. Covers the ground steadily and with purpose, though still requiring time to fully develop and finish. Should continue to improve as she matures and comes together throughout.

3. 11 – Challis’s VIZSLANYA DOMENKOS JW.

Class: 11 – Open (4,0)

I really liked this class with tough choices between some lovely exhibits.

1. 20 – Priestley’s SILVESTRE ENDLESS LOVE AT ELTRYM - A very promising 2-year-old bitch of excellent type and balance. She presented a lovely outline and immediately appeals for her overall harmony. Lovely russet coloured coat. This was a close call and difficult to separate from the second in terms of quality. Her head was particularly pleasing—feminine, lean, and well refined, without loss of strength. Skull and muzzle are in good proportion showing a slightly longer skull, with a moderate rise to stop. Eyes of medium size, with tight-fitting lids and correct colour, contributing to such an appealing, intelligent, and affectionate expression. Ears correctly set, moderately low and carried, lying close to the head. Altogether, a very typical and balanced head. Very regal in carriage. She has a nicely arched, clean, muscular neck of moderately long length, this entered effortlessly into well-placed shoulders. Forequarters well-constructed, with strong bone and excellent, tight feet. No coarseness was seen. Chest is deep, reaching to the elbow that were held close to the body, and ribs well sprung. Lovely straight legs. Her back is short and strong, supporting a super, well-held topline. Croup showed good length and angulation. Hindquarters are equally well made, a moderate bend of stifle and excellent muscling showing roundness, particularly through the upper thigh, giving width, strength and drive. Rear angulation is well balanced with the front, completing that very harmonious picture. On the move, she could not be faulted—showing excellent reach and drive, maintaining her topline and moving with purpose. She demonstrated a clear understanding with her handler, presenting to full advantage. A quality bitch, well-constructed throughout, with a super topline, excellent hindquarter and a refined, feminine head. In a good class, she stood out on movement and overall balance to take and a worthy BOB.

2. 13 – Coombe’s AMARANTOS BELLARIA AT CASTLEFIELD - not quite 4-year-old bitch that I have gone over before and continue to admire greatly. Very close call to 1st. Very well constructed throughout. She still immediately impresses on the stack, where her overall balance was evident. Slightly finer in frame, yet still presenting plenty of quality, she is a very typical of breed type in my opinion. Her light russet gold coat was in good condition and complemented her outline. She is particularly well off for head construction. Feminine yet not lacking in strength, with a well-proportioned stop and good foreface. Correct bite. I especially liked the clean workings around the eyes and zygomatic arch, giving a refined finish to the head. Eyes medium, ovoid and of a lovely shade, showing a bright, intelligent expression. Pigmentation of the broad nose and eye rims harmonised well with the coat. Good balance throughout the skull, with appropriate width and a defined medial furrow, and a correct ratio of skull to muzzle. Ears of correct rounded V-shape, of good length, set well and lying close to the head. She has a moderately long, muscular neck, flowing smoothly into well-laid, shoulders of correct proportion. Forechest shows good width and depth, with the thorax reaching to the elbow and in correct proportion to ground clearance. Ribs nicely sprung. A super, firm topline is a standout feature, supported by a strong loin and gentle tuck-up. A particularly strong topline and excellent hindquarter construction, with good width to the upper thigh. Balanced angulation to front and rear. Tail is correctly set and carried. On this occasion, on the move, she did not quite display her usual “X-factor,” appearing just slightly off her best, though she did not move poorly. She still showed plenty of width behind, and lovely action to front. Even so, her overall quality still shone through, and she was a worthy RBOB.

3. 12 – Challis’s VIZSLANYA VIZI JW – very honourable mention against other very lovely exhibits.

BOB - Priestley’s SILVESTRE ENDLESS LOVE AT ELTRYM (from class 11 Open)

RBOB - Coombe’s AMARANTOS BELLARIA AT CASTLEFIELD (from class 11 Open)

Retriever (Golden)

Class: 20 – Puppy (5,2)

1. 53 – Norris’s FENPINQUE ROYAL RASCAL BY MOLESTREAM – 11-month dog that instantly showed as a quality youngster. For me, stood out in a class of other lovely dogs. Presented in a paler coloured coat of good quality, with pleasing fullness already developing for age. Showed a beautifully balanced outline throughout, with strength and substance already coming through, yet still retaining a youthful, development. Head is particularly appealing, with an adorable, kind, soft expression. Darkest of eye, with rims and pigment to nose to match, as in flews. Moderately sized eye, set well apart, with excellent workings to zygomatic arch that also showed in slight raise to brow. These dark pools only made you look again at his expression. muzzle strong and deep. Lovely rise to stop. Correct proportions and good construction to head assembly throughout, giving a soft yet alert outlook. Ears set on level with eyes that hung next to a clean neck of good length and excellent muscularity that flow into well-placed shoulders and a correctly made front, which had real strength, showing excellent construction. Well off for bone and already showing substance without coarseness. Body is well balanced, with good rib development showing spring and a strong loin, contributing to a superb level, steady topline which he holds well both standing and on the move. Hindquarters are well constructed, with correct angulation and strength through the rear, giving balance to his overall outline. On the move, worked in a methodical and correct manner, but with good reach and drive, covering the ground steadily and efficiently while maintaining his outline. A very promising puppy with much to like and one to watch for the future as he continues to mature and strengthen. Was awarded RBOB and BP. I later found out that this win completed the points required for his JW. A very much deserved winner. Congratulations.

2. 40 – Clarke’s SUNNYOAK STRING OF PEARLS – A very appealing 10-month-old bitch who has presented in a superb, lighter coloured coat and was rather unlucky to meet a strong winner on the day. She presented a most pleasing, well-proportioned head with a soft, kind expression. beautiful eye liner black to dark brown eye. More refined in features than 1st, as to be expected of a bitch. She showed a good balance through skull and muzzle, which was typically feminine. Strong in jaw. Ears of correct size and set on with eye. strong in clean neck that flowed effortlessly into very well angulated shoulders and long scapula. Straight in front with quality bone, all placed under body well. Super spring to rib. Her outline is slightly longer in cast but still very attractive and she is developing well for her age. Particularly good width through the thigh, which is very pleasing to me, suggesting strength and soundness behind as she continues to mature. Again, excellent rear angulation that balanced well with front. On the move, she covered the ground well and maintained a tidy outline, although at this stage she did not quite project the same level of presence in the ring as the first-placed exhibit. Nevertheless, this is a good quality youngster, who shows many breed-typical virtues and, with continued development and ring experience, should have a very promising future ahead.

3. 39 – Brewer’s STRADCOT MAKING MEMORIES.

Class: 21 – Junior (6,1)

1. 48 – Jackson-Haines’s LEIGHSHAM LEGALLY BLONDE – A 13-month-old darker coated golden bitch of excellent breed type, presenting a most pleasing and balanced outline. Nothing was overdone. She had a thoroughly feminine head, a broad skull and a well-defined stop. Her muzzle is wide, deep and of equal length to skull, showing strong jaws with a full, correct bite. Lovely dark brown eyes, well set, giving that soft, kind expression so typical of the breed, complemented by good pigment and a well-coloured nose with wide open, nostrils of back pigmentation. Ears are moderate in size and correctly set level with the eyes, framing her beautiful expression. These were neatly hung next to her neck, which is of good length, flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders, showing good proportions in front construction and allowing for excellent prominence to prosternum. Well-placed upper arm allowing her forequarters to sit correctly under the body. This was not heavy which was lovely to see. Elbows are close fitting and her front assembly is well balanced with her rear. Her body is compact and short-coupled, with a strong loin and a super, level topline that she maintains both standing and on the move. Hindquarters are well developed for her age, showing good width to thigh, well-bent stifles, and strong, well-let-down hocks, straight when viewed from behind. All very appealing in the free stack. Tail is well set on and carried correctly, completing a very balanced picture. She carries herself with confidence and ring presence, standing over plenty of bone with lovely, tight, cat-like feet. She was presented in excellent condition, with a well-maintained mid-to-dark gold coat and shown to advantage by her handler. On the move, she excelled—covering the ground with purpose, drive and accuracy both coming and going, holding a firm topline and balanced carriage throughout. She still has a little to develop, as to be expected of her age. I am sure this will make her even better. To take breed top honours, she had to outperform a quality puppy that I liked a lot, and she rose to the occasion, showing maturity beyond her age. A top-quality youngster with nothing exaggerated or overdone, and with continued development, she should have a very promising future. BOB.

2. 53 - Norris’s FENPINQUE ROYAL RASCAL BY MOLESTREAM (please see critique for 1st in Puppy).

3. 49 – Jackson-Haines’s LEIGHSHAM SWEENY TODD.

Class: 22 – Post Graduate (8,3)

1. 42 – Harvey’s VALISA VA VA VOOM – A 2-year-old bitch of pleasing type. Shown in a lovely textured, darker cream coloured coat. She had such an appealing feminine head of correct proportions, with a kind eye and soft expression. Lovely workings under a beautiful dark brown eye, in keeping with her coat. Balance in head proportions. Ears of correct size. Her neck was strong and of good length, flowing cleanly into well-placed shoulders with good angulation, giving her a solid and balanced front assembly. Prominence to prosternum. She stands over plenty of bone with neat, cat-like feet, and shows a well-developed body with good spring of rib. Her topline is firm and level, which she holds both on the stack and on the move. Particularly pleasing are her hindquarters, with strong, muscular thighs and good width through both upper and second thigh, providing strength and drive on the move. Her movement set her apart in this class, securing her the win. Plenty of width to rear, without being overly so, and hocks upright. Straight in front. went around the ring with real drive and purpose. In excellent coat and condition, she was well presented and shown to advantage. A sound bitch.

2. 47 – Hurrell’s KLASSICAL LEGACY FROM DOUBLE GOLD AMONG GILLANSGOLD (IMP ND) – A 3.5-year-old dog of a rich, darker golden shade, presenting a balanced and slightly more compact outline when viewed in profile. He stood well for his handler and showed himself to his advantage. He has a masculine head with a kind expression, good eye colour and dark pigment and correct dentition with a scissor bite. While the overall head construction is pleasing, his muzzle could be a shade longer for me. His neck is strong and of moderate length. He has a great deal to like in terms of a well-proportioned body. He was well boned throughout with neat, tight feet, and showed correct angulation front and rear. Good depth of chest and excellent sprung to ribs that were well laid back. Short coupling added to his thoracic appeal, showing that he was not long cast and allowing for his topline to be level and firm, both standing and, on the move. He carries a well-set tail, and his hindquarters are of particularly good strength, with good width to thighs and well-bent stifles, providing power and drive. In excellent coat and condition, he moved well around the ring, covering the ground with good reach and purpose, using his strong quarters effectively.

3. 54 – Pollington’s TRAMIN KING’S RANSOM AT BONILDA (IMP UKR).

Class: 23 – Open Dog (2,0)

1. 46 – Hurrell’s KADAKA KAOS AT GILLANSGOLD – A solidly built 5.5-year-old dog of super pleasing type. Presented in a rich, golden coat with good feathering. He has a handsome, well-balanced head without coarseness, featuring a strong muzzle, good jaw and correct dentition. His dark brown eyes and well-pigmented nose and eye rims contribute to a soft, kindly and expressive look typical of the breed. Even in my photos on the day, he gave the happiest look that I would say is indicative of the breed. His neck is of good length, flowing into shoulders that had an angulation in keeping with his rear. He has a good width to front, with a lovely spring to rib. This had to be found by going through his lovely, mature coat. A firm, well-muscled loin, maintaining a level topline both in profile and on the move. He was well off for balance to his construction throughout, being muscular with sound amount of bone and neat, cat-like feet. Another with excellent width to upper and second thigh that he really used and showed off on the move. Length seen to croup of excellent width and good tail placement. He moved freely and positively around the ring, showing strong rear drive from well-used hocks and covering the ground with ease. His tail was carried happily throughout, enhancing his overall presentation. A powerful and balanced mover and on the day, he painted a lovely picture for his construction and movement.

2. 51 – Norman’s TONARA PICASO – A mature 7-year-old dog, slightly lighter in coat than the winner, but still well within the darker end of the golden spectrum. Presented in good overall condition. He is a well-balanced, short-coupled dog with a pleasing, well-proportioned head, nicely chiselled with a strong, powerful muzzle and lovely dark pigmentation, including dark eye rims. His dark eyes and correctly set, neat ears give a kind and attentive expression, and he was most responsive to his handler throughout. He has a good depth of body with well-sprung ribs and strength to loin. Width across croup was evident. His neck, carried well into shoulders that had a good lay-back, though he has sufficient upper arm. He stands on a straight front with neat and well-shaped feet. His rear construction is a strength, showing excellent width to upper and second thigh, but still in keeping with the rest of the charge and a good turn of stifle, straight hocks and strong quarters which enabled him to move with positive drive. On the move he covered the ground soundly, holding his topline and keeping an ever-wagging tail, clearly enjoying his time in the ring. If there was an award for happiest dog on this day, this one would get it with his fab disposition. A very appealing dog and close decision with the winner, the two being similar in many respects.

1. 66 – Jones’s COEDHELYG AS GOOD AS IT GETS – A pleasing 11-month-old male youngster who showed a balanced outline for his age. Once you got into his coat, a good topline which he maintains well both standing and on the move. Still very much a puppy and needing time to develop throughout, particularly in overall substance, but in time, will come. Head currently lacking a little in finish as he is only 11 months, but still giving a lovely, soft male expression that was very appealing to me. This came from a coat very in keeping with slightly lighter coat. White present to socks, lovely, shapely amount to chest, finely fluted up through medial area to head, and the finest tip to tail. Super attentive to handler. Clean cut in skull, cheeks flat and moderate stop emphasised by that fine fluting. Lovely breadth to slightly rounded skull. Finer in bone at present, but, as mentioned, still only 11 months. This gave a lighter overall impression, though his construction is sound. Straight in front and chest down at elbow. Carries himself well through the body, with a well-shaped croup in terms of angulation and length. Strength to loin. For his age, a good width to the hindquarters, showing promise as he strengthens. Angulation a real positive, giving him a pleasing outline and contributing to his balance. On the move, sound and positive, covering the ground well, particularly for one of this age. A good puppy who, given time to mature and gain strength, should continue to progress well. BP.

Class: 30 – Junior (3,1)

1. 70 – Shore’s BRIZTOLLIE I HAVE A DREAM JW – dog of nearly 2 years of age, and an eye-catching youngster who, for me, oozes breed type. Presents a balanced outline with good length without excess. A firm, level topline which he held well. Attractive lighter orange coat and presented beautifully. White blaze to end of muzzle through to mid-point on cranium, forechest and feet and just a slight touch of white to the tail tip. Head a strong feature, showing good breadth of skull with a slightly tapering muzzle of correct proportions, moderate stop and the most appealing, friendly, alert expression. Eyes clear and of good colour, ears well set and of appropriate size and a lovely amber. Lovely flesh coloured pigmentation around eyes and to nose. Lovely workings to zygomatic arch and around eyes that had a gentle rise to brow, giving such an appealing expression. Neck of medium length, strong and flowed cleanly into well-laid shoulders. Front assembly sound showing good balance in length to upper arm, elbows close and forelegs straight. Good width to chest. Well ribbed showing excellent male spring, with good depth of chest and a muscular, short loin, giving strength through the body. Good width carried over the croup and into powerful hindquarters, with strong second thighs and correct angulation front and rear, contributing to his overall balance. Hocks strong and straight. Tail set flowing from a slightly sloping croup and carried well. Very appealing on the move, showing drive and purpose, covering the ground well and maintaining his outline. Width seen on the up and back. Sound in profile. Overall, well balanced, with lovely movement, allowing him to win the class and RBOB.

2. 62 – Hipkiss’s DELTANDAMBA DOMINO DANCING – A 12-month-old bitch, cutting a feminine appearance. A very well-balanced youngster who presents a pleasing overall outline, a different style to that of 1st and more compact than the winner. Finer in construction, as is often appropriate for a bitch of this age. A nice quality exhibit with much to like, shown in excellent condition. Darker in coat colour, with white socks, small amount of white to tip of muzzle and flash on head, smaller blaze to chest and to tip of tail. Head was particularly attractive, of pleasing wedge shape with almond-shaped eyes and correct flesh-coloured rims, giving a typical friendly, alert expression. Ears of good set and shape, contributing to a feminine and correct head profile. Good length of neck, flowing cleanly into well-laid shoulders, of good angulation, which are particularly pleasing. Forelegs straight and well placed with elbows close to the body. Chest of good depth, with well-sprung ribs, giving substance through the body, and a nice rib and loin which contributes to her overall balance. Length of croup in keeping with body proportions. Hindquarters well angulated with good bend of stifle, giving strength and balance behind. Coat of excellent texture and quality, straighter in appearance, with ample feathering appropriate for a youngster. On the move, showed enthusiasm and drive, covering the ground well and carrying her tail correctly which didn’t stop. Pushed to second, by RBOB. Overall, a very well balanced and promising youngster, with good proportions.

Class: 31 – Limit (3,1)

1. 69 – Parker, Parker & Hipkiss’s SKYSARIA BLAZE OF HOPE WITH DELTANDAMBA JW – 2.5-year-old dog, that I was lucky to have gone over previously. He did well under me then, losing out to RBOB (his litter mate), however, a little immature at that time, as his brother had got there faster. Now he has started to come together nicely. Some points I questioned previously and hoped would develop, seem to continuing on the correct trajectory. A great deal of similar good points to that critique, but just more developed and mature. Very pleasing in outline, presented in a full, straight rich orange coat that had white to a flash to head furrow down to nose, on chest, feet (not above pasterns) and desired tail tip. Head construction a particular feature, showing the desired wedge shape with a broad skull and strength through the muzzle. Nose of flesh colour with eye pigment to match. beautiful expression that came from dark eye of medium almond shape, giving an alert, intelligent expression, enhanced further by correct ear placement and carriage. Neck of good length and strength, well-proportioned to the rest of the body, flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders. Lovely and straight in front, with brisket reaching to the elbow. Good strength over the loin with moderate tuck-up and a gentle slope to the croup. Good width to upper and second thigh that has improved over time. On the move, he required a second run at it as initially, he moved a touch close behind, but when asked to move again improved greatly, showing his correct width behind that was in keeping across his croup, and good action in front. He turned on style in the challenge and moved in keeping with his construction straight from the off. This too was seen in the group. Tail didn’t stop in keeping with the action of the breed. Presented in excellent condition, in a lovely coat. A quality exhibit with much to like, who I do not believe is the finished article and should continue to improve with maturity. BOB.

2. 63 – Hipkiss’s DELTANDAMBA IT’S ASIN – A 12-month-old dog, that was litter mate to 2nd in Junior. More compact than that of first and quite pleasing in appearance, already showing pleasing overall balance, even at a young age. He was presented in a beautifully textured double coat, in good condition. White patch to chest, nose fluting through to middle of head, feet and the desired tip to tail. The Head was clean and well proportioned, showing the wedge shape of the Toller. Skull broad with a slight rounding and a moderate, well-defined stop. Muzzle clean and tapering, giving a balanced foreface. His expression was particularly attractive, alert and intelligent, with well-set eyes contributing to the desired keen, slightly reserved look. Overall, a pleasing, masculine yet still refined head. Neck of moderate length, clean and muscular, flowing into well-laid shoulders. I would have preferred a touch more angulation both front and rear to fully meet the breed’s requirements for efficient, driving movement. He held a good, level topline, with a well-made croup showing appropriate length and width, allowing for correct tail set and carriage. On the move, he did not quite show the animation and drive I was looking for on this occasion. A young dog competing in Limit, who would benefit from further maturity throughout. Nevertheless, a promising exhibit with many correct breed features and a nice prospect for the future.

Class: 32 – Open (3,1)

1. 68 – Parker’s TOLLPEPPER ECHO’S HOPE FOR SKYSARIA AW (B) – 5.5-year-old bitch that I have had the pleasure of going over previously. A great deal of what I wrote before has not changed. She was presented beautifully, with a very soft double coat, slightly lighter in colour than the other exhibit in class, yet still very appealing. She displayed a lovely feminine appearance, enhanced by a very appealing expression. Her amber eyes, with darker rims, blended seamlessly with her coat. Alert throughout and clearly ready to work, she had a clean, feminine, wedge-shaped skull with a moderately defined stop. Her medium-length neck was muscular, flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders, with a shoulder of moderate length. She showed width of forechest, allowing for effective movement and a brisket reaching to the elbow. Ribs were well sprung, with a pleasing moderate tuck-up. I particularly liked her strong loin, which was well developed without being excessive, allowing for a super topline. The croup showed gentle angulation and was in good proportion to the rest of the exhibit. Overall angulation was moderate and appropriate. Beneath the full double-coat, she demonstrated good width through the upper and second thighs that was not overly done, with a well-bent stifle. Not a small girl, yet she retained the appearance of compactness. Typical action in tail on the move. On the move, good width to front on the return, however, a touch close behind for me. On the around she showed true footfall. As before, she was attentive to her handler, confident, and showed a lovely character.

2. 61 – Hipkiss’s AFONBACH FIRST SIGN O’SPRING AT DELTANDAMBA JW – 5.5-year-old bitch of excellent breed type, presented in super coat showing large white patch to chest, almost fluting from muzzle through stop and to socks. Handled to her advantage. A beautifully balanced, mature exhibit who immediately appeals for her proportions. Her head followed the correct wedge proportions, moderate stop, and breadth of skull. Beautiful in expression that came from a lovely dark amber eye, surrounded by flesh-coloured rims and complementary nose. Ears of correct size and carried close to head providing a border for a lovely, typical alert expression. She had a neck of good length and strength, cleanly arched and flowing into well laid shoulders. Good width to front with straight forelegs. She was deep through the chest with an excellent spring of rib, carried well back to a short, muscular loin, and showed a strong topline. Her hindquarters were advantageous. They showed strength and well developed, showing good width to upper and second thigh, well bent at stifles and hocks well let down. For my preference she is a touch weighty at present and not quite as racy in outline as I would ideally like, which just cost her top placing today. I later learned she had not long had a litter, which may well account for this. On the move she was sound, true, and purposeful, covering the ground with good reach in front and strong drive from the rear. She maintained her tail carriage throughout, providing typical action. A bitch with much to like and one who, in slightly harder condition, could easily challenge for higher honours.

Class: 36 – Junior (0)

Class: 37 – Open (1,0)

1. 79 – Riley’s SCOTTSRIVER CRUZIN DUDE – Although standing alone in this breed, this just short of 3-year-old dog was well worthy of BOB, when matched against the breed standard. In the stack a slighter exhibit, but that does not mean any less well made. Presented a pleasing, typical outline with excellent substance throughout. Really lovely, handsome, square head, free from exaggeration. Deep in stop and strength to jaw. Excellent in dark amber eye, showing only slight haw and soft, kind expression. Ears well set, correct leaf shape, framing the head well that hung next to a strong, thick neck. This flowed into well-laid, strong shoulders. As mentioned already, although a leaner exhibit, the body was well constructed, with well-sprung ribs, depth and width to chest, strong back. Leanness enabled clear view of his muscularity and well-developed hindquarters. Well off for bone. Excellent texture to coat and presented beautifully. I had hoped he would move well and he didn’t disappoint. He showed strength and correct action. Motored around the ring with drive and purpose yet seemed effortless and all in a day’s work. An eye-catching lad with an abundance of confidence and ring presence. BOB.

Spaniel (English Springer)

Class: 38 – Puppy (0)

Class: 39 – Post graduate (3,1)

1. 83 – Hydon’s LOXBOURNE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE IR JCH – 3-year-old bitch that was shown in a coat of predominantly liver with white. She was very pleasing in the stack enabling a well-balanced profile. Particularly appealing in head, being strong yet undeniably feminine. Correct in breadth of skull and a well-proportioned muzzle, with squareness to finish of flews. Her ochre eye is correct and complementary for her coat colour, contributing to a soft, intelligent and typical expression. Flatness to checks that showed workings. Lightening of coat through medial line in head, typical of breed made for attention to be drawn well to eye and brows. Ears of correct length in nice texture, length and set in line with those medium sized eyes. Well off for reach of neck that went well into strong shoulders that showed appealing angulation. Straight in muscular front showing good width to the hand. Down at elbow and good spring to ribs. Finish to ribs not too long showing good length to body. Good strength over loin, all providing the scaffolding for a solid topline, working to her advantage. Good length to croup and angulation complementary. Rear angulation in keeping with front. Width to upper and second thigh, which she used well on the move, displaying true English Springer Spaniel action with good drive from the rear and covering the ground with ease. Handler and charge were very much in sync with each other, and I was pleased to award her RBOB.

2. 82 – Glass’s COBHAY ROSA MEG – 2.5-year-old bitch that was well presented in a very lovely liver and white coat. She has a beautiful head with a pleasing expression, showing good depth of muzzle, slightly domed skull with lovely white fluting, that separated well medium size, almond-shaped, dark hazel eye. These sat above flat cheeks, and chiselling. Well set, correctly shaped ears. Neck of moderate length that flowed into very well angulated shoulders and a straight front with good bone. She stands with enough substance and strength. She was down at elbow and body was well coupled and strong over the loin, with good width behind and well developed first and second thigh. Moderate in her bend at stifle. Good width over croup. On the move she was sound, making good use of her excellent rear and showed drive and power. Slightly longer in cast than my winner. A compact, muscular exhibit, expertly handled, with much to like.

Class: 40 – Open (4,2)

1. 85 – Williams & Toublic’s COBHAY DASHING DANDELION JW – 2.5-year-old dog who appealed immediately on entering the ring. Litter mate to 2nd in Post graduate. A robust, upstanding male showing breed type and good substance without coarseness. Well-proportioned throughout, with a balanced outline and the correct proportions for the breed. Very much a male head in appearance that was pleasing, with good length and fairly broad skull, cleanly chiselled in zygomatic arch and in balance with his body. Correct eye colour for his liver and white coat, giving a keen, intelligent, and kindly expression. Lobular ears well set and of good length, framing the head well. Neck of good length, strong and muscular, leading into well-laid shoulders and a correctly sloping topline, which he held both standing and on the move. Good depth of chest with well-sprung ribs and strong, well-muscled loin. Neat in feet. His hindquarters were broad, powerful, and well bent at stifle, providing the drive so essential to the breed. On the move he showed action in keeping with the breed with reach in front and strong, driving hind action, covering the ground effortlessly while maintaining balance and topline. Sound both coming and going. Very nice in all proportions enabling him to achieve BOB. I was delighted to see him go on to achieve Grp 2 under the Gundog Group Judge—many congratulations.

2. 86 – Williams & Toublic’s COBHAY FANCY PHLOX – Very much a family affair, this 7-year-old liver and white bitch being the dam of both the winner of this class and 2nd in Post Graduate. It was easy to see the qualities of the mother carried through to her offspring. A well-balanced bitch of good type. Virtuous in a feminine head with a lovely eye and a beautiful, soft expression. Well-proportioned through the head, giving an overall kind and intelligent appearance. Loved the finish to muzzle and flues. Fairly broad in skull, which was slightly rounded, giving rise to stop and raise to brows. Super dark in eye that matched the balance between bright white and liver coat so well. Head very indicative of the breed. Correct in length to pendulous ears. Good length of neck, flowing into a decent front assembly, contributing to her balanced profile. Thoracic cavity down at elbow, with nice straight front. She is perhaps a touch long in cast for my personal preference but remains soundly constructed. Strength seen throughout. Moderate in rear angulation and width of upper thigh. Moved very well, covering the ground with ease, and was handled to best advantage on the day. A lovely bitch who has clearly passed on her virtues and a pleasure to assess.

Weimaraner

Class: 52 – Puppy (0)

Class: 53 – Post graduate (5,0)

Lovely standard of Weimaraner on show in this class, making for some very difficult decisions. Thank you to all who came under me, with these lovely exhibits.

1. 106 – Pearman’s WEIPOWA SHAKEN NOT STIRRED TO BRITMANS – A dog that is a really striking example of the breed, displaying everything expected of a quality Weimaraner at only 12 months. On entering the ring, he really stood out, even with several other good examples around him. He is well muscled throughout. Moderate in head proportions, showing balance in muzzle to cranium proportions. Good workings under an alert, lighter blue-grey eye that harmonises well with his lighter silver coat, creating a lovely, typical expression. Slight medial furrow extending well through skull in a well prominent occipital protuberance. Gentle rise to stop, showing appealing width that all came together to show a lovely masculine head, that was not over done in any way and very regal. Ears of correct length and texture, positioned well on head. These hung close to a muscular and clean neck of moderate length, very much in keeping with the overall look of this exhibit. Almost seamless transition from neck through to well laid shoulders of good proportions. Straight in front, with excellent depth and width of chest. Down at elbow, with lovely spring to rib. Well off for proportions of length to height. He is well balanced in both fore and aft angulation, resulting in an overall sound outline and lovely topline. Very well-muscled throughout, which was evident in the upper and second thigh width. Powerful in his movement showing excellent reach and drive. Presented in superb condition, he looked every inch ready for a day’s work. A very promising youngster with a bright future ahead; I can easily see him performing well at championship level. I was pleased to award him BOB and see him go Gundog Grp 3.

2. 103 – Jefferies’s RIVERTONE ATHENA OVER SILBERMEER – 1.5-year-old bitch, that I liked quite a lot on the day. She is very refined and feminine, with no mistaking her sex. Different in breed type to my 1st. She presents a pleasing outline in the stack. Super feminine in head, with a very soft, sweet expression. gentle in rise to stop that shows a moderate medial furrow, separating an eye of colour in keeping with her coat colour, which was quite appealing. Correct in ear placement that hung close to a neck of good reach, which flowed into a nice topline. Correct in angulation to front assembly and straight in leg. Finer in bone throughout, but still providing her a good platform for the rest of her construction. Width of chest in keeping with rest of charge. Moderate spring of rib, and tuck-up, with ribs extending well back. Good strength to loin. She is balanced in her construction throughout, with good rear angulation. Moved very well in the class and later in the challenge, covering the ground with ease and showing drive. Good width to rear on the away. An elegant youngster of finer type, who should continue to develop. Fended off some good charges. Pleased to award her RBOB.

3. 105 – Kerslake’s SABSKY KARLSTEJN- very honourable mention for this exhibit. Came up against some good examples.

Class: 55 – Open (2,1)

1. 104 – Jefferies’s RIVERTONE AURORA OVER SILBERMEER – 2.5-year-old bitch that was again quite refined. Good balance in head construction showing equal length of muzzle to head. Very wise in expression, with lighter,/pinker pigment that was in keeping with rest of dog’s lighter steel coloured coat. Ear placement correct. The refined look to the head was in keeping with a slighter cast, where she showed a very clean, moderate neck that elegantly seemed into well angulated shoulders. Good width to chest, without being overdone. Straight in front. Brisket just down to elbow and appealing spring to ribs. Lovely strength to loin that started at the back of well extended ribs. This allowed her to have a level topline, which she held, on the move. Rear angulation matching that of fore. Moderate in rear width to thigh. Pleasing in height to length ratio. Quite steady on the move, showing good rear action on the around. Width seen behind on the up, and good footfall on the around.
