City of Cambridge and County Canine Society 13th June 2026 English Setter, Hungarian Vizsla, Retriever (Flat Coated), Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling), Spaniel (American Cocker). My first thanks, as always, must go to Julia, Jane and the rest of the committee for asking me to judge at their show. I was informed that this was a new venue for the show. However, I did not see many of the teething problems associated with the new scenery. Congratulations to you. Yet again, I would also like to extend my thanks to my stewards Andy and George. The ring ran ahead of schedule, and the catalogue was completed very well. Many thanks to you both. I was informed that some 1000 entries were received for the show, which in the current climate was fantastic. Absentees were noted as a champ show was being held on the same weekend. However, I have travelled to judge in a similar location and was happy to see a high standard of dogs, at an open show. Today was no exception, with some lovely exhibits seen in several breeds. In particular, one breed was very well off for movement, which pleased me greatly as this is my go-to when judging. This was accentuated well as all rings were outside. Although I would have liked the rings a touch bigger to allow the gundogs, I judged, to show themselves off even further, this does not mean they were small. Again, well done to the committee. English Setters Class: 115- Puppy (3,0) 1. 248 – Wight and Grimmett’s SAMELEN ENIGMATIC CHARM – 11-month bitch that was presented in an already quite mature orange belton coat, shown in excellent condition and give a very pleasing picture for one so young. She is a well-grown youngster with a balanced profile and a strong, firm topline. Her head was one of her strengths, displaying the type I particularly admire. Feminine whilst retaining strength, with a dark eye contributing to a supper soft, doleful expression. Good working beneath the eye, cleanly chiselled without coarseness and a well-finished muzzle of correct length. The rise to stop was proportionate and balanced, with the planes of the head fitting together well. Correct ear placement completed an attractive and typical headpiece. She had a strong, well-set neck flowing smoothly into the shoulders and topline. She possessed a good front assembly with well-laid shoulders and complementary return of upper arm, providing the correct angulation and allowing her to move with reach and efficiency. She seems to be developing well throughout, showing good depth to chest for her age and carrying appropriate muscle throughout. The rear was developing nicely, with good width through the thigh and increasing muscularity throughout the second thigh. Width across the croup provided a solid foundation behind and contributes to her overall balance. On the move she covered the ground well, particularly considering the limitations of a relatively compact ring, remaining steady in topline and showing sound, coordinated action. A promising young bitch whose maturity of coat, quality of construction and breed type suggest a bright future as she continues to develop. 2. 238 – Adams’s ALOFRANA XCLUSIVE PARTY – A 6-month-old bitch, who was a very appealing youngster and pushed hard for top honours in the class. Presented in a lighter orange belton coat, she was naturally less mature than my winner, being almost half her age, yet possessed many qualities that make her a particularly attractive prospect. Slightly finer in stature than 1st, though this in no way detracts from her overall appeal, instead contributing to a feminine and refined appearance throughout. She presented an appealing feminine headpiece, with a dark brown eye and well-pigmented surrounds that enhance her sweet, intelligent expression. The stop was sufficiently defined and in keeping with the overall balance of the head, while the back skull is particularly pleasing, allowing for the correct and easily appreciated proportions between occiput to stop and stop to nose. Good workings beneath that dark eye that was framed by correctly placed ears. She carried a well-proportioned neck of good length, flowing smoothly into a balanced front assembly. Good angulation in front was matched by corresponding angulation behind, resulting in a pleasingly balanced outline. She stood over sufficient ground, maintaining a level topline, displaying a body that is already well toned and developing appropriately for her age. Well coupled and moderate in length. Shapely in croup that had good width for age. Nice short hocks complete a sound rear construction. On the move she is still very much a baby and at times showed the exuberance expected of a six-month-old puppy, but she is just starting out and showing what is to be expected. However, she did still have width behind on the away and typical action on the around. What impressed me most was her happy, outgoing attitude and enthusiasm for her work; her tail never stopped, a quality I place great importance on, in a youngster of this age. A very promising puppy with much to like and I look forward to following her development. Best of luck with her future. 3. 245 – White’s PADUAN FRANKINCENSE. Class: 116- Junior (3,2) 1. 238 – Adams’s ALOFRANA XCLUSIVE PARTY (please see 2nd in class 115) Class: 117- Post Graduate (6,3) 1. 246 – Witing and Grant’s KANIETTER SASSY SEASTAR AT ORMSTIGA IR JCH – 2.5-year-old bitch that was shown in a darker blue belton coat in keeping with age. Shown in excellent condition. A nice quality bitch displaying good balance throughout and one who was strongly considered for Best of Breed. Leaner and somewhat finer in construction than the eventual winner yet possessing an undeniably pleasing outline. Her head was one that was more refined and feminine, with balanced proportions and a particularly pleasing shape to the back skull. Shapely in dark brown eye, with the blackest of pigmentation to the surround, enabling a harmonious match to her darker coat, allowing a very soft look. Prominence seen to stop without being overly so. Fairly square finish to muzzle that was proportionally in balance to the rest of the cranium. Ears set on low that sat neatly next to a neck that showed length and slight arch that flowed cleanly into well-laid shoulders and providing the reach required to complete that balanced outline. She was well made throughout, with good angulation both fore and aft, allowing for balanced and efficient movement that she showed well. Prominence seen to chest of good width and down at elbow. Spring to ribs apparent. Very pleasing topline, which remained firm and level whether standing or on the move, contributing greatly to her overall picture. Her croup was proportional and pleasing for shape, length and width, giving strength behind without sacrificing elegance. She showed plenty of rear angulation, all contributing to a balanced silhouette and sound construction. On the move she maintained her shape well and presented a very attractive picture. A finer-made bitch of considerable merit whose overall balance and breed characteristics made her a serious contender for the top award. While I ultimately preferred the type of my Best of Breed winner on the day, this did little to diminish her quality. I was delighted to award her RBOB. 2. 239 – Griffiths’s TAWNYMEADE MOONSHINE – A 20-month-old orange belton male who presents a pleasing profile. His head was a real asset that had lovely strength and masculinity, which immediately caught the eye. The skull was well balanced with good width, complemented by a clean, well-defined stop and a correctly proportioned muzzle ratio. Dark expressive eyes combine with well-set ears to give a kind, intelligent expression. another with a really pleasing finish to rear of the cranium. A clean neck, showing strength and flowed into well-laid shoulders and a firm topline maintained on the move. He has good depth and width of chest for his age, well-sprung ribs and sufficient substance. His rear angulation matched that of front. His orange belton coat is of good texture and presentation. Moved freely around the ring, covering the ground with purpose and maintaining his outline well. Plenty of width to front on the return and true footfall on the around. 3. 244 – White’s DROVEBOROUGHSILVER PEARL FOR PADUAN. Class: 118- Open (2,0) 1. 247 – Whiting, Watkins, Philips and Grant’s GLENMAURANGI CASSIOPEIA – Quality 2.5- year-old tricolour bitch, who immediately caught my eye upon entering the ring and never disappointed throughout her assessment. Although a slighter exhibit, she cut a beautifully balanced, feminine profile. She possessed a very lovely, well-proportioned feminine head with correctly shaped, well-covered eyes of excellent colour, giving the sweetest of expressions and so much breed character. Her clean cheeks, balanced muzzle and overall head qualities are particularly pleasing, with a rise to stop in keeping with the rest of her feminine appearance. Excellent depth to muzzle that still showed length and good ratio to skull length. the little brown tips to brows only accentuated the lovely dark brown eye. Dark pigmentation that was in keeping with rest of coat. Ears set closely to head and on low next to a well-arched neck of super length that flowed seamlessly into beautifully laid-back shoulders and a correctly angled upper arm of correct balanced length, creating the good front assembly. It gave a focal point to her refinement and contributes greatly to her balanced outline and effortless movement. Her front was straight with good bone and pleasing width, while her chest is deep and well developed without any loss of elegance. Well sprung in rib and carried well back, she had a short, strong loin and excellent body proportions. Her topline was level and firm both standing and on the move. She had a good width across the croup with a gentle fall to a well-set tail of correct length, completing an excellent silhouette. Her hindquarters are particularly well made, with lovely width to the upper thigh and well-developed second thigh, showing strength and muscling. The rear angulation complements the front assembly well, giving her overall balance. On the move she covered the ground with ease and purpose. She demonstrated reach in front and strong driving action from the rear, maintaining her level topline throughout. She was sound coming and going, displaying pleasing width both fore and aft with accurate foot placement, which was not easy in the outdoor ring. She moved effortlessly around the ring with style, confidence and efficiency, fully demonstrating the quality of her construction. Very happy to award BOB. 2. 239 – Griffiths’s TAWNYMEADE MOONSHINE (please see 2nd in class 117). Feminine head with a lovely, bright and intelligent expression, her slightly lighter brown eye still well within the breed standard and contributing to her kind, happy disposition. Such a slight rise to stop that led from a long muzzle into a flat skull. Strong in reasonably long neck that still showed elegance and was a sleek transition into a well-proportioned, very favourable front angulation that was matched by equally balanced angulation in rear, giving a pleasing symmetry. Deep in chest and down to elbow. If I’m being over fussy, I would have liked a little more width to chest. Straight in front and proportionate in bone for this racy exhibit. Balanced in spring to rib, with flatness to forerib easy to find on the touch. Loin short and appealing topline. Croup of good width, with correct length and angulation, contributing to a balanced outline and sound construction. Happy to award BOB. Shortlisted in the group. 2. 274 – Punter’s BENVELLYN ZION AT ARRELLADORUM – Another black 3-year-old bitch of good, but different breed type. She presented a more robust appearance than 1st, but still particularly appealing. She was a substantial yet balanced bitch, with plenty of quality throughout. Her head was one of her strongest features; beautifully moulded with clean lines and the classic Flat-Coated Retriever expression that immediately caught the eye. A lovely, kind outlook enhanced by the darkest of brown eyes, giving excellent breed character. Strength to neck flowing into well-placed shoulders, with sufficient bone and neat, well-constructed feet. Depth and width through the chest. Good spring to rib and level topline. Strong over loin. She displayed excellent width to the upper thigh, giving an impression of strength and power. On the move she was sound and purposeful, although she did not quite have the reach in front of the class winner. Nevertheless, she presented a lovely profile and pushed 1st well. RBOB. 3. 273 – McQuade’s MADDOUSE DIAMONDS R’FOREVER. Class: 138- Open (3,0) 1. 274 – Punter’s BENVELLYN ZION AT ARRELLADORUM (please see 2nd in class 137). 2. 277 – Wilson’s HAMELDOWNTOR MUSIC OF THE NIGHT VW – A lovely black veteran bitch of 10 years who defied her age in many respects. Presented in fab condition, who carried herself with all the enthusiasm and vitality of a much younger dog. She possessed a strong yet feminine head, full of breed character without any exaggeration and a beautiful, gentle expression enhanced by a kind, dark eye. Head, long and with a super soft rise to flat skull. Strong in neck that transitioned seamlessly into well laid shoulders of good angulation. Well-balanced throughout, with a well-made front assembly, good shoulder placement and ample bone, all contributing to her sound appearance. Good depth of chest and a firm, level topline, which she always maintained. Her hindquarters showed very good width to the thigh and correct rear angulation, giving both strength and drive. Presented in a super coat that completed the picture of quality and careful conditioning. A super happy character with an ever-wagging tail, that showed she still enjoyed every minute of the ring time. She was a joy to watch and exemplified the breed's temperament. On the move she was free, true and purposeful, covering the ground with ease. Such a sweet, feminine bitch, still excelling in rear construction and movement and a wonderful ambassador for the breed. 3. 272 – McQuade’s GEMSWIN RIVER OF DREAMS. BOB - 271 –DIAMANTE BLU REGINA DELLA PACE TO HAMELDOWNTOR JW SGWC (IMP IT) (from class 137 Post Graduate) RBOB - 274 – PUNTER’S BENVELLYN ZION AT ARRELLADORUM (from 2nd in class 137 Post Graduate and 1st in class 138 Open) Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) Of the breeds I judged, in my opinion, the overall best movement was seen in this breed. Class: 147- Puppy (0) Class: 148- Junior (1,0) 1. 316 – Rice’s TIAMARIA BELLA ROSA - A promising 15-month-old bitch that was a type that appealed for her balance and overall outline. A more compact and refined type. Her feminine head is correctly proportioned, with the desired muzzle-to-skull ratio, nicely shaped brown eyes and good flesh pigmentation, creating an alert expression. Skull clean and keeping that slight wedge shape. Good prominence to stop and workings beneath eye that all accentuated the start of that tapering muzzle. Ear placement correct and held well. Clean neck of moderate length that flowed easily into well-laid shoulders, with balanced angulation front and rear, contributing to her pleasing outline. Depth to the chest that showed width also, without being too wide, developing rib spring and well-muscled loins. Length seen to croup. Pleasing in the hindquarters, showing balanced width to the thigh and good rear angulation. She already had the positive attribute of muscle tone throughout. On the move she displayed good reach and drive, with a lovely springy action. She carried her tail correctly and used it to advantage, flashing that tip well and clearly enjoying her time in the ring. At this stage she could be a little narrow and close behind when viewed from the rear. However, at 15 months, she has plenty of time to develop in this department. RBOB. Class: 149- Post Graduate (5,1) 1. 317 – Rice’s TIAMARIA JUNIPER BERRY – A very appealing 2-year-old bitch presented in excellent coat and condition. A great deal of similarities seen between this exhibit and that of winner of Junior. A more compact and refined breed type. Presenting a well-prepared double coat of a rich dark orange colour. Clearly feminine throughout and slightly longer cast in appearance than her younger kennelmate. She showed a clean outlined head of balanced proportions. The skull is slightly rounded with a moderate stop, leading to a well-filled muzzle of good depth and length. all coming together to give her that wedgelike shape. Her almond-shaped, darker eyes are well set and combine with neatly carried ears to produce a soft, intelligent and alert expression. Moderate neck rolled into forequarters of good lay and angulation. Depth to chest and spring to ribs. Her hindquarters are well developed, with a good muscle tone. On the move she was straight and true, covering the ground with drive. Typical tip flashed on the move well. Narrowly missing out to kennel mate for reserve best of breed. 2. 313 – Fincham’s DANEHAVEN DESPREUX – A promising 2-year-old bitch of pleasing, but different type to my winner of class. Still very much a youngster in some areas and one who should continue to benefit from further maturity, but she already displays many desirable breed characteristics. Of good height and substance, she was more robust in build than my winner of class, with sufficient bone and neat, well-constructed feet. Her feminine head was well balanced with a lovely wedge shape, complemented by well-set ears, framing an expressive amber eye that harmonised beautifully with her lighter orange coat colour, which remains well within the breed standard. Her kind, intelligent expression is particularly appealing. She possessed a good length of neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. Straight, well-boned forelegs support a body with pleasing length and depth of rib. Although not yet fully developed through body and forechest, she has the framework and construction to mature well with time. Presented in good condition, with her coat developing nicely. She moved soundly around the ring, maintaining a correct topline and tail carriage, with decent width behind. She presented a happy and outgoing attitude in the ring, which was very appealing indeed. 3. 319 – Surrall’s DANEHAVEN FRESHWATER. Class: 150- Open (3,1) 1. 318 – Salmon’s ACADIABYRNE TIBETAN CORAL OF QUACKANOVA – as soon as I saw this 4-year-old boy, he immediately commanded attention in the stack. I felt he had such appeal. A mature dog of excellent breed type and overall quality. Presented in superb condition, carrying hard muscle throughout and shown in a well-maintained, ruddier orange coat. He combined substance, balance and masculinity without coarseness. His head is a particular strength, masculine and correctly proportioned, with sufficient breadth of skull, a moderate stop. He had a clean, slightly tapering muzzle of good depth. Well-set almond-shaped eyes of pleasing darker hazel colour contribute greatly to the intelligent, alert and kindly expression. His working undereye and to brows only assisted in accentuating these already appealing features. His correctly sized, triangular ears were set high and frame the head well. A strong, well-arched neck flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders, creating a clean and balanced outline. Well angulated front assembly, with balanced proportions, sees him stand on a straight front with excellent bone and substance. Elbows fitted closely to the body and strong pasterns. A well-developed forechest and suitably broad, deep chest provide ample room, whilst well-sprung ribs extend well back into a strong, muscular loin. His topline always remained firm and he possesses a well-constructed croup of excellent length, width and angulation. Hindquarters are very appealing displaying good width through both upper and second thighs, well-muscled and balanced angulation, providing the power and drive essential for a gundog. On the move he was the best in the class for me, covering the ground with effortless reach and drive whilst maintaining a firm topline and excellent carriage, as was the tail action. Moving straight and true both coming and going, with good width, reflected the condition and construction beneath. A dog with much to like. Very happy to award BOB. 2. 314 - Fincham’s DANEHAVEN MACDONALDS – A 5-year-old dog that presented a masculine appearance in the stack and on the move. He possessed a head with correct planes, a clean muzzle and an alert, intelligent expression. His amber eye colour blends harmoniously with his lighter orange coat, while flesh-coloured pigmentation complements the overall picture. In body a robust, well-framed dog with good substance throughout. This seemed to be indicative of his breeding, as there were other members of his kennel on show, on the day that, in my opinion, mirrored these favourable attributes. His strong neck flows smoothly into well-laid shoulders. He stood on a sound front that was straight, with sufficient bone and tight feet. The chest was of good depth with well-sprung ribs extending well back, leading into a strong loin. width to croup was obvious and showed good length and angulation. He was balanced front and rear, with good angulation throughout, creating a pleasing outline. Presented in good condition. His coat was of good texture and colour, with attractive white markings to chest, feet and blaze to head. On the move, his attention wandered due to distractions of a female persuasion beyond the ring, making a complete assessment of his movement more challenging. From what was evident, he demonstrated good reach in front, sound foot placement and covered the ground with ease. BOB - 318 – TIBETAN CORAL OF QUACKANOVA (from class 150 open) RBOB - 316 – TIAMARIA BELLA ROSA (from class 148 Junior) Spaniel (American Cocker) I thought this was a lovely group of dogs. Class: 151- Puppy (3,0) 1. 324 – Clay and Dummett’s AMERICLASS MACCHIATO WITH ALMONDSBURY – An outstanding 8-month-old black and tan bitch, who immediately caught the eye upon entering the ring and continued to impress throughout. Beautifully presented and handled. She was a youngster of considerable promise. Her feminine head was particularly appealing, with lovely head properties, well rounded and clearly defined stop. Lovely, raised brows adorning full, darkest of dark, round eyes. All surrounds of pigmentation in keeping with the majority black coat. Excellent workings to zygomatic arch enabling a super intelligent and alert expression, displaying correct proportions and refinement without losing breed character. Ears lobular, fine and of correct length to the nostrils. The head is carried proudly on a well-arched neck of good length, flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders and a balanced, functional front assembly. She presents an attractive overall outline, already showing excellent shape and balance for one so young. The body has pleasing depth and spring of rib for her age, with a firm gentle slope to topline that she maintained both standing and on the move. All giving the appearance of one short, compact, and well knit. Her hindquarters are well developed with excellent width, muscling and a well-bent stifle, providing the power and drive required for efficient movement. Rear angulation complements the front assembly well, creating a harmonious and balanced picture. On the move she excelled, producing the best movement of the American Cockers on the day. She covered the ground with confidence and style, driving strongly from the rear with excellent width behind and maintaining a superb topline throughout. Her action was free, effortless, and true. She has all the attributes to develop into a top-class exhibit and, in my opinion, a very positive future. Not only was I happy to award BOB and BP but was also over the moon to see her go Grp1 and PGrp1. Congratulations and all the best with her development. 2. 327 – Dring’s DREAM BOY FROM VAMOS – A promising 7-month-old black and tan dog who was unfortunate to meet the class winner. An appealing youngster with much to like, he presents a pleasing outline with a good topline that he maintained well throughout, for his age. Still very much a baby and naturally requiring further maturity, he is currently lighter in substance, but has the framework and balance to develop well with time. His head is developing nicely, showing masculinity and workings, with a well prominent stop, allowing for the carriage of an attractive, gentle expression and assisting to give a pleasing overall picture. Neck is of a length in keeping with the breed standard and proportional to the rest of this young charge. This transitioned well into well laid shoulders. Good width to straight front. Down at elbow with spring to rib seen. Decent in strong back with short coupling. I would personally prefer a little more rear angulation to complete the picture, but he remains well balanced overall and muscling coming in well. On the move he showed good reach in front and demonstrated decent width and soundness behind. He covered the ground freely. As he matures, gaining further substance and development, he should become a very attractive adult. Best of luck. 3. 323 – Clay and Beet’s AMERICLASS AMERICANO WITH THISTLEFINCH – A very honourable mention for this youngster who moved well. Class: 152- Junior (1,0) Class: 153- Post Graduate (2,1) 1. 328 – Dring’s YOU’RE MY DREAM SMELINE SVAJA (IMP LTU) – A very flashy 22-month, tri-colour bitch presented in excellent condition and shown to her advantage. A glamorous young lady with considerable ring presence who immediately appealed for her style, balance and happy outlook. She possesses a well-developed, rounded head with a correctly defined stop, square muzzle and lovely chiselling beneath a dark, expressive eye. Correct eye shape and dark colour complemented the markings to head. Well-defined brows and lobular ears set level with the bottom of the eye; all combine to give the soft, appealing expression so characteristic of the breed. She is long through a clean, muscular neck that entered seamlessly into well-laid shoulders and a balanced front assembly. Straight forelegs with good bone and compact feet complete the picture. Her body seems to be still developing, but already showing depth to the chest reaching the elbow, a pleasing spring of rib and short, strong couplings. The topline gently slopes. Hindquarters are well constructed with balanced angulation. A particularly attentive exhibit, showing an excellent rapport with her handler and carrying herself with confidence and enthusiasm. On the move she demonstrated good width both coming and going, moving straight. She covered the ground with ease and maintained her outline well. She pushed hard for top honours. RBOB.
