Poole Canine Club 17th May 2026 Retriever (Labrador), Irish Red and White Setter, English Setter, Retriever (Curly Coated), Spaniel (Field), Spaniel (Irish Water), Retriever (Flat Coated). My first thanks, as always, must go to Jacquie and the rest of the Poole Canine Club committee for asking me to judge at their show, once again. A change of venue seemed to have worked very well, giving a lovely outdoor show in plenty of space and decent sized rings. Congratulations to a small but well organised team, on putting on a lovely show. Yet again, I would also like to extend my thanks to my stewards Christine and Iona. The ring ran very well, without a hitch and the catalogue was very well done. Thank you both. It was somewhat disappointing to hear that the numbers across the board were down for the show. Although this was held near to the South Coast of England, many exhibitors had travelled to the double Champ show in Scotland and other shows were being held, in relatively close proximity to this show. Together with the current financial situation, made for the perfect storm for low entries. A big shame as this is such a nice show. A heart felt thank you to you all for coming under me. Retriever (Labrador) Class: 210 Puppy Dog or Bitch (0) Class: 211 Junior Dog or bitch (0) Class: 212 Special Yearling Dog or Bitch (1,0) 1. 274 - Hoban’s MEADOWLEIGH TIME TO DREAM JW – A 22-month black bitch that was quite attractive, of pleasing type and balance throughout. Feminine, typie head with gentle expression enhanced by dark brown eyes. Width seen to skull that showed a pleasing amount of workings to foreface and prominence to stop, without being overdone. A very appealing head. Good reach of neck flowing into a balanced front and rear angulation. Width seen to front that was very appealing and fitted the hand well and straight. Chest down at elbow, with spring to ribs that showed substance and level topline. with pleasing width to upper thigh and enough substance throughout. Dense coat, true to breed. On the move she was sound both coming and going, showing good width fore and aft and moved with positive rear drive. Tail of good otter like shape, though carriage a touch high at times. Super attentive to her handler and showing a lovely affectionate temperament. An honest bitch with much to admire overall and her appealing type and soundness deservedly earned her BOB. Class: 213 Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (1,0) 1. 275 - White’s LUNARPET CHINA IN OUR HANDS – A 6 years of age, chocolate bitch that had the softest feminine, head with the kindest, gentle expression and dark hazel eye in keeping with her coat colour. Good width and depth of muzzle with clean cheeks and correct ear placement framing the face well. Strong neck of good length leading into well laid shoulders and a balanced front assembly. Good depth through the chest with excellent spring and carry of rib. Well angulated fore and aft, straight forelegs with good bone, strong pasterns and compact, well knuckled feet. Width to croup and correct tail set and carriage. Particularly pleasing width to upper and second thigh and good muscling to the rear quarters. Dense weather-resistant coat of correct texture. For me, carried a little excess weight today and lacking a firmness over the topline. However, moved soundly around the ring and showing the steady, true action expected of the breed. Class: 214 Open Dog (0) Class: 215 Open Bitch (1,0) 1. 276 - White’s LUNARPET BORN FREE - An attractive four-year-old yellow bitch of the lighter shade, presented in a good robust coat. Feminine head with lovely soft expression, enhanced by dark eye and dark pigmentation to the surround. Descent in broad skull with defined stop and pleasing workings under the eyes, giving true Labrador character, although I would prefer a little more rounding to the skull. Still a very feminine look and appeal. Slightly taller in stature but remaining well balanced and strongly made throughout. Clean reach of neck flowing into a level topline and correct tail set, maintaining a balanced outline standing and on the move. Straight forelegs, correctly shaped compact feet and sufficient bone throughout. Good depth through the chest and pleasing spring of rib. Well angulated hindquarters with particularly good strength. Moved well around the ring, covering the ground freely with positive drive. An appealing bitch overall with much to admire, particularly her expression. Only just missing out on best of breed, but happy to award RBOB. BOB - 274 - MEADOWLEIGH TIME TO DREAM JW (from class 212 Special Yearling Dog or Bitch) RBOB - 276 - LUNARPET BORN FREE (from class 215 Open Bitch) Irish Red and White Setter Class: 216 Graduate Dog or Bitch (0) Class: 217 Open Dog or Bitch (0) English Setter Class: 218 Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (3,1) 1. 279 - Tucker’s WALSHAW TAKES TO THE STAGE – A very promising 8-month blue belton bitch with much to admire and already presenting a lovely outline for one so young. Pretty, feminine head with a truly typical English Setter expression, soft and soulful, complemented by dark brown oval shaped eyes. Appealing in workings below eye. Lovely square finish to muzzle with pleasing roundness to skull giving the correct balance and character to the head. Well-defined stop and prominent occiput. Head planes and proportions of skull to muzzle very appealing also. Ears of moderate length and set on low. Good strength through the moderately long neck, showing good muscularity that led into a straight front with well angulated shoulders. Depth to chest and prominence to prosternum. Spring of ribs appealing and balanced throughout with good width to croup, proportionate width to thigh and well-developed hind angulation for her age. Presents an overall picture of balance, standing naturally and confidently. On the move still very much a puppy, but everything progressing in the right direction, moving freely with encouraging coordination and balance for her age. Coat developing very well, of pleasing texture and presentation, enhancing her overall quality and breed type. Tail didn’t stop wagging. A youngster with a great deal of promise and certainly one to watch as she continues to mature and develop. Pushed her litter sister to second on her ring presence and sturdy movement. Deserved BOB and BP on the day. 2. 278 - Tucker’s WALSHAW STAR STRUCK – An 8-month bitch and litter sister to 1st. There were so many positive similarities to that of her sister that the differences were just on colour, as she is a tricolour. Another pretty female head. Square in finish to muzzle. Dark in eye producing the softest, female expression that was separated by a well-defined stop. Lovely workings to zygomatic arch and raise to brow aided this expression. Good depth to muzzle and ratio to skull length. Skull of correct oval shape and strength to occipital protuberance. Correct in set of moderate ears that hung neatly next to a reach of neck that was pleasing. Front angulation good and mirrored in the rear. Deep in chest and level topline, with good width across croup. correct in rear angulation, with thigh already showing good width. On the move, was where she was beaten by her litter sister. Although she showed a decent width behind, she was a little too eager to please and wanted to get back to her litter sister. I am sure that this will get better as she matures. She showed true footfall on the around. A good balanced bitch that will put up a very good fight to her litter sister over time. Another to watch. Good luck with her future development. Masculine throughout with a pleasing outline and strong, firm topline. Head of good type and showing decent ratio of muzzle to skull that were parallel. Balanced by neat ears that sat slightly above level of eye and lying close to head. A kind eye of good, dark brown colour that was in keeping with his black coat. Good length of neck flowing into angulated shoulders and a well-developed forequarter. Good depth of chest with sufficient heart room and well sprung ribs. Would prefer a slightly longer loin to complete the overall proportions, though he remained balanced. Angulation to rear quarters in keeping with front. I would like a touch more width to upper thigh to complete his overall picture, but well-toned throughout and strong second thigh, enabling him to move soundly with purpose. Good feet and correctly carried tail completing the picture. BOB. Class: 224 Open Dog or Bitch (0) BOB - 282 –ROUGHYEDS REGAL GEORGE AT TREECAVE (from Class 223 Graduate Dog or Bitch) Spaniel (Irish Water) Class: 230 Graduate Dog or Bitch (1,1) Class: 231 Open Dog or Bitch (1,0) 1. 286 – Hewett’s BLUE JEWEL’S GARVIN [ATC AKCSS21403102] – 2.5-year-old dog of pleasing overall type and outline. Built on a slightly larger frame, giving an impressive look, yet remaining well balanced and athletic throughout. Masculine head with strong foreface, eye colour in keeping with coat of rich liver colour and a soft, appealing expression. Strong neck flowing into the forequarters, although I would prefer a little more layback of shoulder, however, this complemented well with rear angulation and made for a very balanced dog. Spring of rib was in keeping with breed standard and forelegs straight in front. He possesses good width behind with well-developed quarters and pleasing length and width to croup. Strong, clean hindquarters enabled him to produce good rear drive on the move. At times slightly distracted on the move, however when he concentrated, he covered the ground well, moving with purpose and showing parallel action behind while maintaining his outline. Coat tightly curled, rich in colour and presented in excellent condition with correct presentation throughout. An appealing youngster that I feel has still got his best times to come. Once he settles, he makes for an appealing exhibit indeed. BOB. BOB - 286 – Blue Jewel’s Garvin (from Class 231 Open Dog or Bitch) Retriever (Flat Coated) Class 232: Special Yearling Dog or Bitch (1,0) 1. 287 - Fresle & Knox’s GEMSWIN ANGEL IN BLUE JEANS AVEC DAISYHOME – A promising 18-month-old black bitch with much to admire and a lovely overall picture of the breed. Feminine head developing nicely, long and clean with good breadth to skull that showed the required flatness and a gentle expression. Dark eye of correct shape and medium size, well separated by a slight stop, giving a soft and appealing outlook without exaggeration. Clean reach of neck flowing into a good flat topline with short, strong loin and pleasing overall balance. Good depth of chest and correct front angulation, matched by well-constructed quarters behind. Well set front with quality bone, good substance throughout without becoming overdone. A little short in croup for my preference, however, her ever-wagging tail did not stop, which was so pleasing to see. Coat of softest, pleasing texture with good feathering, presented in excellent condition throughout. A confident young girl with the friendliest disposition, who clearly knew her job in the ring. Moved freely and effortlessly once settled, showing a straight stride and sound action. An appealing youngster with plenty to like and every indication she should continue to do well as she matures.
