Well this very hard-working committee certainly pulled out all the stops. From the initial welcome, to the brilliant judges’ area, all was carried out to the highest standard. Thank you to Elizabet and the rest of the fantastic committee for your hospitality and asking me to judge at your lovely show.
This show was held on the same weekend as Richmond Champ show, alongside several Open shows that were local to the area. This seems to be a reoccurring problem for shows, with the crowded show calendar, thereby making it all the more impressive that the committee were able to post an increased number of entries. Congratulations, especially as it was your 75th show. Thank you to all those who chose to come under me and bring their lovely charges, especially with all the other shows on at the same period.
Also, my thanks, as always, go to my stewards for the day, David and Ian. Their welcome to the exhibitors and organization were second to none, leaving me with little to do. Thank you so much, both.
In my preamble, I always state that movement is always top of my agenda when judging. However, on this occasion, the committee had a very unenviable task as several rings had very little grass growth on them. This included the gundog ring. This also meant that it was difficult to fully assess the movement of the dogs, with some concessions needing to be made. The rings were of a lovely size, with many of the exhibits being able to get into their stride well. Thank you all again.

1. 3- Mallinson & McLaughlin’s WOODYBROOK GUY - 2-year-old male of medium-size. A well-muscled charge that showed substance and pleasing overall balance, presented predominantly in black with white. A dog that I liked very much, with a lovely amount of facial furnishings. Super brows. Good head in shape and proportions, with a pleasing oval eye. Personally, I would like a slightly darker eye to complement the dark coat, but still well within the standard. Strong, clean neck that flowed with ease into well laid shoulders, correct length of upper arm with pleasing width to the front, fitting the hand well. Slight slope to pasterns. Good overall body proportions, with a deep chest and spring of rib, strong loin and good bone throughout, into a firm back with slight fall, which he held very well on the move. Good shape to croup with favourable length and width, and good rear angulation; this was particularly evident in his tail carriage both in the stack and on the move. Strong hindquarters, with proportionate width through the upper and second thigh, which he used well to produce plenty of drive. On difficult ground he moved very well, with true action behind and excellent drive in profile. Very good rear action and sound moving away, with width on the up and back. Footfall around was particularly pleasing. However, he is still rather enthusiastic on the move, ensuring the handler stayed thoroughly certified, which she passed well. A little more refinement here will help him truly. A strong, well-made young dog with plenty of substance and very good rear construction. Lovely texture to coat that was already in place for a dog of two. A very pleasing young male with much to admire and plenty of promise as he matures. BOB.

1. 35- Weaver’s JILONY ZELDA - bitch of 3 years of age, shown in black and white. More compact in her type and shown thoroughly as a feminine bitch, who appealed in the stack, exhibiting breed type and a pleasing outline. Her head is a particular attribute, being constructed with equal proportions, a slight dish like appearance and the most feminine expression. This originated from a dark brown, expressive eye that balanced well with the colour of the coat and enhanced by workings beneath. good in finish to foreface and prominence in rise to stop, without being harsh. Correct ear placement framing the shapely head well. These also hung neatly next to a long, elegant neck that had plenty of reach and muscularity. This flowed seamlessly into shoulders of good proportions of scapula to upper arm. Suitable width to chest and depth of brisket reaching the elbow. Straight forelegs with good bone that wasn’t coarse. Nicely sprung ribs carried well back and short coupled. Firm in muscular loin. Maintained topline throughout her time in the ring. Good rear angulation, well-turned stifles and short, low hocks. Although leaner style of pointer, I would have preferred a little more width through the thigh. Saying that, she nevertheless possesses strong, well-toned quarters which provide plenty of drive. On the up and back, she didn’t quite have the movement I was looking for on the day. However, there was decent width to front and good front action. Footfall on the around was quite pleasing, covering the ground with a smooth action. A pretty bitch of very pleasing type.

1. 34- Weaver’s DAPPLELINE CHANCE FOR ANNIEZU - A dog I liked immediately for his substance, masculinity and overall breed type. At six years old he presented a very honest and workmanlike picture, standing balanced throughout with a pleasing outline and attributes you would hope to find in a mature male pointer. In profile, a substantial orange and white dog with ample bone and quality, giving the impression of both power and functionality. His head was certainly a male, being masculine and well modeled, with good planes, a defined stop and prominence to occipital protuberance. good depth to muzzle/ jaw, with clean finish. Dark brown eye that provided a kind yet attentive expression. The pigmentation around them gives the striking appearance of carefully applied eyeliner, further enhancing his appeal. This was carried through to large black nose. High-set ears of lovely texture were carried well and completed a most attractive headpiece. These adorned a strong, muscular neck of good length and reach that entered effortlessly into a well-constructed fore assembly. Straight forelegs with good oval bone and tight, well-made feet support him soundly. Balanced angulation front and rear assisted with his overall appearance. He had a lovely width to chest, with brisket down to the elbows. Excellent spring to ribs, gave him plenty of heart and lung room. His body is strong throughout, with a firm loin. Topline was pleasing and remained strong whether standing or on the move. Croup showed plenty of width to match that of the rest of his construction. This enabled the tail set positioning to be very much to my liking. The hindquarters are one of his real strengths, displaying the all-important width through the thighs, bend at stifle and sufficient rear angulation to provide power and drive. While I would perhaps prefer a touch more muscle tone for complete finish, there is still plenty to admire in his overall construction. On the move he was the strongest mover of the pointers, which swayed me instantly. He covered the ground with ease, displaying a free, effortless stride while maintaining his shape and balance. Maybe a touch more reach would have finished him off well, but this was minor. His movement was true and smooth, making the most of his excellent construction. A male with much to commend and who held my attention. BOB.

1. 83- Fryer’s DREAMCAST ELYSIUM AT CAROLCO - 2-year-old bitch. Daughter of a dog that has done well under me previously. Parti black and white that was superbly presented in a full, unblemished coat. Very feminine and refined throughout, with a beautiful outline and lovely overall balance. Gorgeous, refined female head, beautifully feminine and well chiseled, with good depth and a pleasing, square finish to foreface. Lovely dark, deep eye, with super expression that came from lovely, raised brow. Shapely in skull emphasizing her femininity. Correct in muzzle to skull proportions. Ears presented very well, accentuating the lobular shape and position in relation to eye. These hung closely and neatly next to an elegant, well-muscled neck flowing cleanly into well-placed, sloping shoulders. These good forequarters made for a very pleasing front. Good bone and compact, tight feet. Excellent depth of chest, showing plenty of width to allow the hand to fit well. Spring and length of rib proportionate to overall makeup of charge, which was carried well back. Firm, strong topline with slight slope and nicely short-coupled body. Croup length and angulation in keeping, enabling a correct tail set. Well-developed hindquarters with good angulation and muscle tone to upper and second thigh. A pleasing bend at stifle, in-keeping with the angulation seen to the fore, which she used to good effect on the move. She did this effortlessly around the ring with purpose, drive and good reach. Sympathetically handled. A quality bitch with a great deal to admire. At the time of coming under me she had 4 CC’s and now I see a 5th has been added, I am not surprised. Although she stood alone, she would have given many a good fight for BOB. Also shortlisted in the group.

1. 119- Thomas’s TIGERROCK TOP GUN - almost 4-year-old male that is out of a line, of which I am quite familiar and has done well under me in the past. A very appealing and honest Welsh Springer male who immediately catches the eye with his beautiful rich red and white coat, presented in excellent condition and displaying a lot of typical Welsh characteristics. Masculine throughout. He had a strong, well-proportioned male head with the classic Welsh expression, well definite stop and correct ear placement. Softest of expressions that originates from an eye that hit the breed standard well, to my thinking. It was medium sized, not prominent and showed no haw, with a colour befitting of his coat and overall appearance. Lovely amount of workings beneath the eye to the zygomatic arch. Reach seen to quite a clean, strong neck, that transitioned well into a firm topline, maintained both standing and on the move, with a slight arch over the loin. Well angulated front that had width and excellent prominence of prosternum, giving a balanced and well-developed fore chest. Straight, well-boned forelegs and strong, well-knit feet complete the picture. Quite mature and finished in body, with well-sprung ribs and excellent depth and substance. He stood over plenty of ground, but not overly so and was built for the job in which he was originally intended. His rear-quarters were particularly impressive, well angulated and muscled, with width seen to thighs that provided plenty of power from behind. Good width seen to croup also. He held a very pleasing outline in profile and was quite a balanced dog throughout. On the move he was accurate in footfall, carrying himself well and covering the ground soundly. True action on the around, with footfall to match. My only reservation was that he was a little timid to go over. I do hope he grows out of this. However, overall, a sound, Welsh Springer with excellent bone. A worthy representative of the breed in the group. BOB.

1. 120- Hawkins’s SCHONHUND SHOW AT THE OSCARS JW - an imposing 2-year-old male who was presented in a darker grey coat that had plenty of substance and masculinity. A larger-framed dog that had plenty of scope and presence, yet still retaining the athleticism required of the breed. He was strong in head, showing masculinity and well-proportioned with a balanced foreface and skull, good workings under the eye and an intelligent, attentive expression. Length seen to ears. The muzzle was strong and of good length, complementing the overall maturity of the headpiece. A powerful, muscular neck of good length that flowed into correctly placed shoulders with good return of upper arm. He was well made through the body with excellent depth of chest reaching the elbow, good width through the forechest and plenty of heart room. His ribs were well sprung and carried well back to a muscular loin, and strong through the middle piece. Firm topline and correct tail carriage complete a pleasing outline, which he maintained throughout. The hindquarters displayed width through the upper thigh, together with strong muscle development and balanced rear angulation. Well-turned stifles and strong, low-set hocks provide the power and drive required for efficient movement. On the move he covered the ground well, displaying reach in front and strong driving action from behind, making excellent use of his powerful quarters. On the up and back, he showed good width with upright pasterns that stayed strong. The topline remained steady and he showed good coordination and balance. A good young male, who should develop into a good adult. BOB.

1. 122- McMahon’s IR SH CH SILVERKELVIN JUPITER OVER MAGDALA VW CW22 - A lovely veteran who simply did not show his years. It was lovely to assess. Approaching nine years of age, he was presented in fab condition, his excellent muscle tone and overall fitness being a tremendous credit to his owner. Presented in a beautiful lighter silver-grey coat truly captured the essence of the breed's well-known "Grey Ghost" description. A dog who immediately appealed for his breed type and honest quality throughout. Slightly more compact in build than some, a feature which I felt enhanced his breed type and overall balance. He presented a pleasing outline when stacked, displaying strength without coarseness and carrying himself with confidence. His head is strong and masculine with good proportions, quality shape and a kind expression, aided by correct eye and ear placement. The head retains its strength without any loss of refinement. A strong, clean neck flowed into well-laid shoulders and a soundly constructed forehand. Excellent width to chest, together with good depth reaching well to the elbow, provide ample heart room. Straight forelegs, good bone and strong, well-made feet complete a quality front assembly. He was strong over his thoracic region with ribs well sprung and carried well back, giving both length and depth to the body, while a firm loin contributes to his overall strength. For me, I would have liked a little longer croup. However, the rear quarters showed excellent width through both upper and second thigh and well-let-down hocks. Strong and well-muscled throughout, he retains the power and condition expected of the breed. His topline was firm when standing. On the move he showed plenty of strength and purpose. What impressed me most was how well he has retained his condition, substance and breed character at this stage of his life. A lovely veteran, long may it continue.
