Exeter & County Canine Society

Breed: Retriever (Flat Coated)

Exeter and County Canine Society Open Show

Big thank you to the committee for the invitation to judge at their beautifully run show, and to all the exhibitors who came and made the day a very special one in the sunshine and enjoying our outdoor ring. A big show of appreciation to my ring steward who kept us in tip top shape and running smoothly, without people like you shows wouldn’t as amazing as they are so thank you for your time and laughter. It was great to see some amazing quality dogs, and people supporting each other, the way shows should be which was lovely to see and be a part of.

2nd – 615 – Flatcharm Mr Heckles For Benoveor – Mrs V and Miss H McIlwaine and Mrs J Reynolds

This sixteen month old male has a fantastic build showing power and raciness in the right proportions. He is confident and kind shown in how excited and happy he is to be gone over by me today. Masculine head, long and nicely sculpted, skull flat and moderately broad slight stop between his eyes. Nose of good size with open nostrils. Jaw long and strong capable of work carrying and retrieving game. Dark eyes of medium size, giving a gentle intelligent expression. Small ears well set close to the side of his head. Teeth sound and strong with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite. Head well set on neck, long neck free from throatiness, nicely symmetrically set and obliquely placed in shoulders running well into his back. Chest nice and deep, nicely broad with well defined brisket. His elbows can move freely. Forelegs straight with good bone and substance to them. Foreribs fairly flat, body well ribbed up showing a gradual spring well arched in the centre, lighter towards the hindquarters. Loin short and square. Muscular hindquarters, standing nice and true. Moderate bend of stifle, hocks well let down. Neat and tidy feet, well kept, with soles thick and strong. Round, toes close, and well arched. Tail set not much above level with back, short and straight gaily carried, wagging constantly. Not as settled in the ring today which through his movement off, which is a shame because the construction and mechanisms are all there, he just couldn’t settle. His topline is beautiful giving a beautiful silhouette. Dense black flat coat, medium texture, fantastic quality, just gleaming in the sunshine. Legs and tail well feathered with coat maturing beautifully. Maturity is coming on lovely with this boy, he has it all there, I look forward to seeing him at shows and having the chance to go over him again, hopefully being more settled.
