Totnes and District Canine Society – 12 July 2026

Many thanks to the Committee of Totnes and DCS for giving me the opportunity to judge the Toys at your open show. Thanks too to my excellent stewards for keeping the ring running smoothly. Despite it being a very hot day, there was a good breeze blowing through the hall making it more bearable. However, some of the dogs were understandably a little lack lustre today and I’m sure would have performed better if it had been cooler. My critiques are in schedule and judging order, hence AV Toy is, unusually, first. Thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over your dogs and for accepting my decisions with good grace.

AV Toy 

V (9,6) 1. Casey’s Russiandream Cody Fleming for Shamal ShCEx (Russian Toy). This seven year old red boy won on his movement. He stood four square, even when free standing. Good head and expression, with large round eyes, dark enough eyes and pigment for his coat colour. Balanced angulation in front and hindquarters. Straight front legs into neat feet. Compact and well muscled. Held his topline on the move. Moved parallel and true coming and going. My only minor criticism is that he was occasionally untidy in his rear movement today.

2. Lane’s Ch Starleisha Midnight Kiss ShCEx (Havanese). Not quite as animated on the move as the winner. Good skull shape with correct proportions. Feminine expression with lovely dark brown eyes and dark pigmentation. Presented a balanced outline. Good, level topline with a very slight rise over her loin. Good tail set but she tended to drop her tail occasionally on the move, only to be expected on such a warm day. Moved freely with just enough drive.

3. Webster’s Underknoll Riverdance at Gayhalo (CKCS). 

Russian Toy 

O (4,1) 1. Casey’s Russiandream Cody Fleming for Shamal SHCEx. Previously critiqued in AV Toy. Won this class on his movement and had a better front than the others. Pleased to award him BOB.

2. Casey’s Jesua Promise Me for Shamal. This six month old red bitch had bags of attitude. She needs lots of time, experience, and patience to settle on the table, so she’s happier for judges to go over her. Having said that, I was able to examine her, enough to see that she has a lovely head and expression and good eye colour. Good ears, carried well. She was happier on the ground and moved well. Pleased to award her BPIB.

3. Casey’s Russiandream Ezra Elliot for Shamal.

Papillion

P (1) 1. Orchard’s Panspayon To Be A Star. This seven month old male presented a balanced outline when standing. Good eye shape and size with dark pigmentation. Lovely symmetrical head markings with a central white blaze. Topped with well set ears which he carried well. Good angulation with a good bend of stifle. He tended to slightly turn out his front feet but this should correct as he matures and his chest drops. Pleased to award him BPIB.

G (4,1) 1. Casey’s Summerjades Jump In For Joy for Shamal. This yearling bitch won this class on her dainty outline and movement, which was the most parallel in this class. She presented a balanced outline with fine bone. Pretty head and expression. Symmetrical head markings with a central white blaze. Used her well-plumed tail well when standing and on the move. 

2. Orchard’s Nightfire’s News On The Bet for Panspayon (Imp Deu). This yearling dog is built on a much larger frame that the winner. That said, everything is balanced and in proportion. He has balanced angulation front and rear and stood four square. He has a good coat and a well plumed tail which he held well when standing and on the move. Moved well but not as accurate in footfall as the winner.

3. Stanbury’s Inixia Georgeous George.

L (1) 1. Stanbury’s Inixia Glamorous Guy JW. This two year old male lives up to his name which is a perfect name for a Papillion. Presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Attractive head and expression with well set ears which he carried very well. Well plumed tail which he carried well on the move and when standing. Level topline which he held on the move. He has a good bend of stifle, but didn’t move with as much drive as I had hoped for today.

O (3) 1. Orchard’s Panspayon Natasha JW. This four year old black and white bitch won on her daintiness and movement. She presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Pretty, feminine head and expression with symmetrical markings and central white blaze. Well fringed ears, set on well. She has a level topline which she held on the move. Moved parallel and true. Pleased to award her BOB.

2. Casey and Standbury’s Inixia Happy Hour for Shamal. This two year old male has a masculine head, but without any coarseness. He has fine, strong bone. Straight legs into neat feet. Very happy chap with bags of character. He used his well-plumed tail at all times. Good topline which he held on the move. My only minor criticism is that I would have preferred a little more length in his body to complete the picture. Moved quite well.

3. Morris and Stanbury’s Inixia Finest Hour.

Havanese 

O (3,1) 1. Day’s Immeleon Royal Dress in Cubadias. This 13 month old bitch won on her balance and movement. She presented a balanced outline when standing on the table with good front and rear angulation. Good proportions with a slightly rectangular outline. Attractive head with correct proportions between muzzle and skull. Good dark pigment. Well coated with a well-feathered tail which she carried correctly on the move. Moved with confidence, style and drive. Pleased to award her BOB and Group 4.  

2. Lane’s Starleisha Prada Paws JW. Close decision between first and second in this class. This two year old male presented a balanced outline with correct proportions. He has an attractive head and expression with correct proportions between muzzle and skull. Dark pigment to eyes, nose and lips. Well-feathered tail which he carried well. Moved quite well but tended to lose his topline occasionally – maybe due to the heat.

Bichon Frise 

O (1,1) Single entry absent.

Bolognese

O (3) 1. Thatcher’s Kobanyai Pelyhes Odin with Devonia (Imp Hu). This four year old male won on his overall balance and his movement. Presented in good condition with correctly flocked coat. He has a balanced, square outline with good front and rear angulation. Correct head proportions with dark pigment to eyes, nose and lips. Correct topline which he held on the move. Moved briskly with drive. Pleased to award him BOB and Group 3. 

2. Thatcher’s Devonia’s Florence. Lots to like about this two year old bitch. Today she didn’t seem as confident as the winner – maybe because she wasn’t handled by her owner? She presented a balanced outline when standing on the table, but not quite as square as the winner. She was presented in very good condition. Good coat with correct texture. She moved quite well when settled.

3. Lovell and Thatcher’s Devonia’s Anzio. 

Chinese Crested

O (1) 1. Lock’s Chestnutcres Beam Me Up. Handsome two year old hairless male with plenty of ring presence. Presented a balanced outline with correct topline. Attractive head and expression with dark pigment to his eyes, nose and lips. Correct skin texture and good feathering. Well plumed tail which he carried well on the move. Moved with extension and drive. Although he stood alone, I was pleased to award him BOB.

Pug

PG (3) 1. Makepeace’s Sandigara Hope And Dreams. This 15 month old bitch won on her movement. Presented a solid, cobby outline with balanced angulation. She has a feminine head and expression without any exaggeration. Her nose has open nares and a correct fold above the nose. Good neck into correct topline which she held on the move. Curled tail, set on well. Moved well with a breed typical, slightly rolling gait. 

2. Kelsall’s Flaikwell Damson Jam. This five year old bitch is built on a heavier frame than the winner, but she is still balanced and in proportion. Her head is feminine and she has open nares. She has a good front with straight front legs. She moved quite well for her new handler. 

3. Kelsall’s Kebbrend Peach Preserve.

O (3) 1. Makepeace’s Hugapug Guy Fawkes at Sandigara. This handsome three year old male presented a balanced, cobby outline. Good head and expression with no exaggeration. Dark pigment, good ears and open nose nares. Straight front legs into neat feet. Good topline which he held on the move. Good bend of stifle giving him drive on the move. Moved with a typical slightly rolling gait. Pleased to award him BOB and Group 2.

2. Kelsall’s Kebrend Mister Marmalade JW. This young 18 month old dog has lots of promise. As to be expected, he is not as well bodied as the winner as he is not yet fully matured. He needs to get through this awkward adolescent stage and his chest still needs to fully drop to complete the picture. He has an attractive head and expression. Dark pigment and enough nose wrinkle. Straight front legs. Feet would be neater if his nails were shorter. His topline needs to strengthen slightly, but he moved well with good footfall.

3. Kelsall’s Kelbrend Dreamy Duchess. 

King Charles Spaniel

G (1) 1. Baker’s Rignolla Tambourin Man at Cofton. Exactly six months old today. At his first show and he was a little overwhelmed. Needs more time to gain his confidence in the ring. Lovely Blenheim puppy with clear chestnut markings on a pearly white ground. Attractive head and expression without any exaggeration. Dark pigment to eyes, nose and lips. Straight front legs into neat feet. Did not move with confidence today but shows lots of promise.

O (3,1) 1. Baker’s Shining Star Over Cofton. Another six month old puppy. This Blenheim bitch is slightly older than her kennel mate in the previous class. She won this class on her balance and movement. She has a pretty, feminine head and expression. Lovely dark eyes, turned up muzzle without being overdone. Presented a balanced outline when standing. Good angulation front and rear. Moved very well when settled. I was pleased to award her BOB and BPIB. She moved even better in the group and I was delighted to award her Puppy Group 2.   

2. Pearce’s Baldragon Living the Dream with Khatibi JW. This two year old tri-coloured male was really enjoying his day out – his tail didn’t stop wagging, but today he was a little too proud of his tail on the move. Masculine head and expression with dark pigment to his eyes, nose and lips. Presented a balanced outline with enough angulation to his front and rear. Neat feet with enough feathering. Moved well but I would prefer a little more width behind. 

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

P (4,1) 1. Hawkin’s Lexody’s Serenity. This Blenheim bitch was in her last puppy class, celebrating her first birthday today. I judged her as a six month old and I’m pleased to see she has developed well. She won this class on her overall balance and movement. Presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Attractive head and expression with good muzzle and skull proportions. Dark eyes and nose. Moved well when settled showing drive from the rear. Pleased to award her BPIB.

2. Jones’ Agraciado Born To Boogie. This 10 month old ruby male presented a compact, balanced outline with a level back, good spring of rib and balanced angulation front and rear. He was presented in good condition. On the move he showed reach and drive in profile, but needs to tighten in front movement.

3. Webster’s Jolainey Boomier Foxx.

SY (3,2) 1. Hawkin’s Lexody’s Legacy. Litter brother to the winner of the puppy class. This Blenheim male is built on a slightly larger mould but still has everything in proportion. Handsome head and expression with lovely dark eyes. Clear chestnut markings on a pearly white ground. Good feet and feathering. Moved well. Another that I have judged before, when he was six months old. Last time he beat his sister, but today they swapped places.

PG (2,1) 1. Lewis’s Carleeto Red Velvet JW. This ruby bitch won on her soundness and overall balance. She is not the flashiest and doesn’t shout “look at me”, but she has all the desired breed attributes. She presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. She has good eye and nose placement with dark pigment giving a breed typical expression. Good flat skull with well-feathered ears. Neat, well-feathered feet. Correct topline which she held on the move. Moved effortlessly with reach and drive. Parallel coming and going. Very pleased to award her BOB and Group 1.  

O (5,4) 1. Jones’ Tangledwood Light My Candle. This three year old Blenheim bitch presented a balanced outline with enough angulation front and rear. I would prefer her to be carrying less weight which would improve her outline. Good eye and nose placement giving an attractive, soft expression. Correct topline which she held on the move. Neat, well-feathered feet. Moved quite well.

Pomeranian

G (3) 1. Phillips’ Klassna Gotta Have A Star. This one year old bitch won this class on her compact outline and foxy head. She has lovely dark pigment to her eyes, nose and lips. Sparkling eyes giving a typical foxy expression. Good coat of correct texture. Tail well set and carried well. Good front into straight front legs and neat feet. Moved well when settled but had a tendency to go on three tracks.  

2. Lovell’s Pawsamy’s Hank Summer Dream. This two year old male also had a nice foxy expression. Good front and rear angulation. Coat of correct texture. Well coated tail which he carried well over his back. I would prefer him to be a little shorter coupled to complete the picture. Moved quite well but occasionally lost his topline.

3. French and Ward’s Bincombefarm The Griffin.

O (3,1) 1. Lovell’s Pawsamy’s Sweet William JW. This two year old male presented a compact outline with balanced angulation. He has a foxy head and expression with dark eyes. Good, straight front into neat feet. Short in the back giving a breed typical, compact outline. Correct coat texture. Well coated tail which he carried well. Moved parallel and true with good footfall. Pleased to award him BOB.

2. French and Ward’s Bincombefarm The Demiguise. Almost 8 month old bitch. Not quite as compact in outline as the winner of this class, but still has time to develop. She doesn’t have her full coat yet but this doesn’t spoil the overall picture. She is balanced with good front and rear angulation. She has a foxy expression and lovely dark eyes. Moved well with brisk, parallel action and bags of character. Pleased to award her BPIB. 

Chihuhua (Smooth Coat)

G (3,1) 1. Skinner’s Davixity Ay Papi At Mujerosa. This 16 month old male has lots to like. He has a good head and expression with dark, round eyes, ears well set and carried well. Presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Level topline into correctly set tail. Held his topline on the move and carried his tail correctly. Moved parallel and true. Pleased to award him BOB.

2. Stanbury’s Yorone Too Timer via Inixia. This eight month old male wasn’t too confident today and needs more time and experience to improve. That said, he presented a balanced outline with a correct topline and well set tail. When settled he moved well and carried his tail correctly. Pleased to award him BPIB. Later in the puppy group he moved better and I was pleased to award him Puppy Group 4.

O (1) 1. Morris’ Mikichi Mr Moonlight ShCEX. This six year old male was a little reluctant at first but, when settled, he presented a good outline with balanced angulation front and rear. He has dark pigment to his eyes, nose and lips. Tail well set and carried well. A little longer cast than I would prefer. Moved well.

Chihuahua (Long Coat)

G (5,4) 1. Skinner’s Mujerosa Miss Tooty Frooty. Pretty seven month old bitch. Presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Pretty head with dark eyes, well placed. Good ear set and carriage. Correct topline into well set tail. She was a little unsettled initially – possibly due to the noisy hall, but when settled she moved parallel and true. Just needs more time to develop her confidence. A promising puppy. Pleased to award he BPIB.

O (4,2) 1. Skinner’s Mujerosa Lucky For Me JW. This three year old male presented a balanced outline with good angulation front and rear. Correct head proportions with dark eyes and well set ears. Straight front legs into neat feet. Presented in very good condition with feathering in all the right places. Level topline which he held on the move. Well set tail which he carried correctly. Moved very well when settled. Pleased to award him BOB.

2. Skinner’s Mujerosa Little Tipple. This seven month old male puppy needs time to settle and build his confidence. He presents a balanced picture with good angulation, a level topline and well set tail. Straight front legs into neat feet. Good head proportions. When settled he moved parallel and true. 

AVNSC Toy

P (3,1) 1. Skinner’s Somergemz Mister Tibbes (Japanese Chin). Handsome eleven month old black and white male. Good head proportions with breed typical astonished look. Dark pigment to eyes, nose and lips. Correct ear set and carriage. Presented a balanced outline. Correct level topline which he held on the move. Good front assembly into straight front legs and hare feet with good feathering. Well plumed tail which he carried well. Pleased to award him Best AVNSC, BPIB AVNSC and Puppy Group 3.

2. Crouch’s Hawksflight Seeing Stars (Miniature Pinscher). This eight month old black and tan bitch has lots to like. She presents a balanced outline with a good front assembly. I would prefer more of a slope to her topline to complete the picture. Feminine head and expression with dark eyes. Rich tans with correct markings. Correctly high set tail which she carried well when settled. Moved well with some hackney action when settled.

G (3,1) 1. Skinner’s Somergemz Mister Tibbes. See previous class.

2. Green’s Newtonians One Who Wandered (Griffon Bruxellois). This black and tan 10 month old male presents a balanced outline with correct proportions. However, he is well up to size and I hope he doesn’t grow any bigger. Typical head and expression, dark eyes and well set ears. Balanced angulation with enough bend of stifle. Well set tail which he carried well. Moved well, holding his topline. Good in side profile, but a little untidy in front action which should settle as he matures.

O (1) 1. Green’s Beauborne Stefani Topmead (Griffon Bruxellois). This three year old black and tan bitch presented a balanced outline and is of a good size. Good head proportions with dark, well placed eyes. Super face furnishings. Cobby body with good angulations front and rear. Held her topline on the move. Moved well with good drive. Pleased to award her Best AVNSC Toy.

Group 

1. Carleeto Red Velvet JW (CKCS). 2. Makepeace’s Hugapug Guy Fawkes at Sandigara (Pug). 3. Thatcher’s Kobanyai Pelyhes Odin with Devonia (Imp Hu) (Bolognese). 4. Day’s Immeleon Royal Dress in Cubadias (Havanese).

Puppy Group

1. Dicker’s Neerodan Last Crusade (ETT). This eight month old male won on his overall balance and movement. Good rich tans and well-defined thumb prints. Handsome head and expression with well set ears. Correct topline which he held on the move. Moved parallel and true with drive. A very promising puppy. 

2. Baker’s Shining Star Over Cofton (KCS). 3. Skinner’s Somergemz Mister Tibbes (Japanese Chin). 4. Stanbury’s Yorone Too Timer via Inixia (Chihuahua SC).

Veteran Group

Sadly only two present for the Veteran group. 1. Warren’s Pedara The World Is Mine (ETT). This eight year old won on his overall balance. Good rich tan markings and visible thumb prints. Wedge shaped head with good ear set. Correct topline which he held on the move. Can be a little untidy on the move, but was OK when settled.

2. Russiandream Cody Fleming for Shamal ShCEx (Russian Toy).
