It was a pleasure to judge this quality entry at this well-organised show. My steward, Colin Woodward, ensured everything ran smoothly and efficiently throughout the day. Thank you.
Italian Spinone
P (5,2a): 1 RBOB & BP Mangham’s Ilsolo Soggy Bottom, w/o bitch of 7 months, lovely quality, appeals in head, kind eye, large nose with open nostrils, good bone for size, good ribbing, correct topline, stands on good feet. Handled with care. Best mover in the class; 2 Bovio’s Ilsolo Sniffed It Once, brown roan bitch, litter sister to 1, good shaped head, good bone for size, correct turn of stifle & strong through the rear pasterns. Preferred the eye shape & movement of 1; 3 Barrett’s Brewnel Barr by Stowledge.
J (4,1a): 1 BOB Beecham & Sharp’s Affilato Jump With Style at Rydonmist, upstanding w/o boy of 16 months, well off for bone, handsome headpiece with good proportions, good eyes, clean neck into shoulders, in good body & coat condition with good texture, correct bend of stifle. Handled to perfection. Moved well in the inside ring - sure he would be impressive to watch in a large outdoor ring where he can really get into his scopey gait; 2 Bovio’s Star At Station with Ilsolo, w/o bitch, nice to go over, good through the front quarters, brisket down to elbow, elbows close to the chest wall, correct topline & bend of stifle. Steady flowing mover with an outgoing & lovely temperament. Can fly her tail a little on the move; 3 Mann’s August Dreamer.
PG (5, 1a): 1 A Jump With Style at R; 2 Bovio’s Ilsolo Chewbacca, nice compact body shape with good angles. Nice shape head, large nose with good open nostrils. Moved with drive & would also benefit from an outside ring; 3 Mann’s Make A Splash.
O (3,2a): 1 Bovio’s Ilsolo River Island JW, w/o bitch coming up 4 years, I thought she looked very smart stacked up, she is well assembled through the front, correct ribbing & texture to coat, good bend of stifle, rear pasterns vertical to the ground. She was a bit spooked by the floor surface or surroundings & just didn’t want to move & sadly as I was unable to assess her movement sufficiently, so couldn’t consider her for the top awards.
Pointer
P (2): 1 BP Brooksmith’s Sharnphilly Lyrical, b/w bitch of just 6 months, looks lovely stacked up, elegant, clean & with flowing lines. Very pretty head, clean neck into sloping shoulders, stands on tight oval feet, she has drive in profile. Her rear pasterns need to strengthen; 2 Saunders & Newton’s Corotine Velvet Tuxedo, b/w dog of 10 months, clean neck into well laid shoulders, good bend of stifle, in muscled condition. He need to drop down & fill out which will come with maturity.
J (7, 2a): 1 Booth’s Lundgarth Ticket To Fly JW, b/w bitch of 15 months, stood out in this class for not only her quality but also her femininity as she was mostly surrounded by larger boys. Lovely & balanced, stacked up lovely & clean in outline, flows, pretty head, good angulation to the front pasterns, moved well using her tail; 2 O’Neill’s Tenshilling Hello Stranger, upstanding b/w boy of just over 12 months, good head properties, he stands a little tense & stiffens which I put down to the hard cold floor in February as he loosened on the move & you could see his qualities better. Preferred the flowing outline & topline of 1. Litter brother to 3 Angus & O’Neill’s Tenshilling Catch The Wind.
PG (9,2a): 1 RBOB O’Neill’s Tenshilling Shboom JW, b/w dog of just over 2 years, clear winner standing & moving, strong bone, he appeals in outline, looks balanced & is in good muscled condition being taut through the loin. He moved well too, using his tail; 2 Collholme Mr Brown with Spinray, upstanding 13 months l/w dog, nice shape, clean outline, good turn of stifle. Just raw & at this stage of development, where he has grown upwards & needs to drop down & fill out. Moved well using his tail; 3 Dunn’s Meadowpoint Hocus Pocus JW.
O (8,2a): 1 BOB O’Neill’s Tenshilling To Sir With Love JW, mature o/w bitch, thought she was quality both standing & moving, clean outline, pretty head with lovely chiselling, good muzzle depth, lovely pigment, clean neck into shoulders, good bone for size, feminine & strong, good angulation to her front pasterns, well muscled, taut loin. Moved lovely in the challenge. Classy; 2 Webb’s Tenshilling Jimmy Mack JW, masculine o/w dog of 4 years, strong bone through the forearms, kind eye, brisket down to elbow, good bend of stifle, moved well. Preferred the free flowing outline of 1; 3 Gates’ Sharnphilly Dizzy Blonde at Linosa.
Retriever (Chesapeake Bay)
J (2, 1a): 1 BOB Mahon-Hunns & Middleton & Haskin’s Susqudilla Yankee Shadow (Imp USA), he may have only been the only one to turn up but I reckon in any company, I would have found him. What a super quality handsome 13 month brown dog, super bone for size, really strong & powerful, what I would call a “proper boy”, appeals in head with lovely expression, correct topline, bend of stifle & in super muscled condition with a good coat. He strode out well & has a good rapport with his handler. He must surely have an exciting future.
Retriever (Flat Coated)
P (4): 1 BP Dunnett’s Hoedun Does It Matter, black bitch of 8 months, well made, nice head proportions & good eye placement, holds a strong topline, correct bend of stifle, moved off strong rear pasterns. Little unsure at times but will gain more confidence in time; 2 Chambers’ Hototo’s Edge Of Glory, black bitch of 6 months, lovely shape, good bone & I liked her front assembly & head but not so good through the rear as 1. Brisket down to elbow, strong topline; 3 Egginton & Davis’ Feldkirk Solitaire with Pajanbeck.
J (6, 3a): 1 RBOB Scaife’s Flatcharm Bing A Ling at Shennanjoy, black dog of 15 months, appeals standing, well balanced in appearance, good bone through the forearms, kind & intelligent expression, clean neck into shoulder, in good body & coat condition - super fit throughout being taut across the loin with well-muscled second thigh. Would like to see him stride out in a bigger ring; 2 & Egginton & Davis Pajanbeck Hold My Halo, black bitch of 14 months, stands on tight feet, strong topline, correct ribbing & bend of stifle. Preferred the flow in outline of 1; 3 Egginton & Davis’ Feldkirk Solitaire with Pajanbeck.
PG (5,2a): 1 Leavy’s Wychwizard Painted Lady JW, black bitch of 15 months, looked the most appealing in outline, balanced, nothing overdone, strong topline, good bend of stifle. She moved co-ordinately but would prefer more front extension; 2 Tinker’s Kelvincross Smokey Joe, masculine liver dog of 3 years, really substantial in bone & size but yet balanced, with a strong topline & really powered around the ring. In good coat & body condition. Head was too heavy for me; 3 P Hold My Halo.
O (4): 1 BOB Chambers’ Hototo Pretty Ballerina JW, black bitch of 4 years, stood out in this class, balanced, nothing overdone, feminine, nice head properties with good eye placement, correct ribbing, strong topline, taut loin, good bend of stifle; 2 Tinker’s Bramatha Lockdown Blues, upstanding black dog of 5 years, fit as a fiddle & it showed in his power moving around the ring. Clean over the topline, good bend of stifle but rather rangey; 3 Tierling & Fewster’s Lizzlog Moonlighting at Karaholme.
Spaniel (Cocker)
P (2): 1 BP McShane’s Meggiemac Tan Tangfastics, black & tan bitch of 10 months, very well made, elbows are close to the chest wall & she is well made through the front. Well presented; 2 Brothwell’s Annilann Da Business at Wissant JW, blue roan dog, litter brother to 1, lovely type, good bone for size, strong topline, in good coat & body condition, good rear angulation. Preferred his sister through the neck & shoulders, beat a smart red dog into 3 West’s Edasiy Dream Upon A Star by Sheigra (Imp Can).
PG (8, 2a): 1 Brothwell’s Wissant Dear Darlin, blue roan bitch of 4 years, compact in appearance, good bone for size, feminine, good ribbing, lovely merry mover. Well handled; 2 McShane’s Meggiemac My My My Delilah, black bitch of 3 years, scored on movement, pretty head, brisket down to elbow, good ribbing, correct bend of stifle, strong rear pasterns.
