Exeter & County Canine Society

I was delighted to be offered this appointment as I am not often invited to judge in this area. I was very impressed with my entry, both in terms of numbers and overall quality.

I was especially delighted with my principal winners and felt very proud to see them go on to represent their breeds in the Group.

Retriever (Labrador)

P (3,1a): 1 BP Kennett’s Magnavalleys Mojito, chocolate dog of 9 months, nice size, very together, well made through the front quarters, stands on nice round feet, good bend to stifle. Preferred his bone over 2 Harvey-Major’s Linjor Mr Jammy Dodger, yellow dog of 7 months, very outgoing temperament, brisket down to elbow, well bent stifle, good moving away but not so precise coming at the moment.

SP (5, 4a): 1 BOB Mills’ Jaybec Winter Yule JW, masculine yellow dog, good strength of bone through the forearm, good depth of brisket, well sprung barrel ribs, good bend of stifle, really drives off well from muscled quarters, free & easy. Moved the best in the challenge. Good coat & overall condition.

PG (1): 1 Fishlock’s Rossacre Tiny Dancer, black bitch, carries a level topline, good depth of brisket with correct bend of stifle. Carrying a little extra weight today over the shoulders & would prefer more front extension on the move.

L (4, 2a): 1 RBOB Hoban’s Meadowleigh Time To Dream JW, black bitch of 2 years, liked her head, thought her pretty with broad skull & kind & intelligent expression, good strength of bone through the forearm yet feminine, well-muscled across the loin giving width & tautness, holds a level topline, scored on movement over 2 Findjan’s Rossacre The Duke, brisket down to elbow, good ribbing & rear angulation. Doesn’t flow like 1 in outline. Blowing his coat.

O (3): 1 Mills’ Jaybec Winter Wispa JW, yellow bitch of 5 years, presents a lovely picture in outline, good bone for size, nice front assembly, clean over the topline - level, looks good moving around the ring in profile but not so tidy going away from me; 2 Findjan’s Cremino Capability Rossacre, sound boy, looked leggier - a larger stamp of a male, well-muscled throughout, good coat, drives off his rear, looks smart in outline, with good neck into shoulders; 3 Fishlock’s Carpenny Halshimoor Delicious AI.

Irish Setter

SY (4, 2a): 1 BOB & G4 Clarke’s Riverbrue Gives You Hell, eye catching male of 20 months, lovely posture standing & moving, full of importance & quality, flows in outline through the neck into shoulders, clean over the topline, correct angulation fore & aft, really smart & in good body & coat condition. Hard to overlook & showed with a polished professionalism. Stood out; 2 Needs’ Covarney Mighty Quinn with Stourford, 13 months so only just out of puppy, lovely stacked up with good bone through the forearms, all male, balanced angles fore & aft, my notes say “smart & naughty”, at such a young age who can blame him (!), moved well if a little close behind.

PG (4, 1 a): 1 RBOB Full’s Henaleas Go West at Teignestuary, dog of nearly 3 years, stood out, lovely impressive outline, masculine, flows & is clean & streamlined, best feet in the class, good rear angulation, has quality to him. Just not quite so true in the rear on the move as BOB; 2 Hadfield’s Marzannes Happy Returns, bitch of 2 years, feminine head, looks nice in outline, good turn of stifle, moved okay. Feet need a little spruce up; 3 MacDonald’s Sheldonite It Takes Two Baby.

L (2): 1 Hadfield’s Covarney Estee avec Marzanne JW, 8 years, nice outline with good rear angulation, good bone for size, correct length of neck into sloping shoulders. I would prefer more muscle condition & tidier feet; 2 MacDonald’s Redclyst Head Full Of Dreams, good bone for size, good depth of brisket, good muscle-tone. Preferred the croup & tail carriage of 1.

O (3, 1a): Hadfield’s Staratlanta Get A Wiggle On to Marzanne, stately boy, flowed the best in outline, stands over his ground, strong topline, good rear angulation & drives well in profile. He is smart with good posture. Would like to see tidier feet; 2 MacDonald’s Redclyst Maximus VW, nice bone for size, prominent occiput, correct depth of flew, good turn of stifle. Not as good through the croup or movement of 1.

Retriever (Golden)

P (4, 1a): Quite a difficult class to judge. 1 BP & PG2 McCammick’s Saffdales Countess Cora, almost 12 months, smaller in size than her classmates, the most together & moved the best in the class driving off from a powerful rear. Nothing is exaggerated, good level topline & well handled; 2 Harris’ Kaspurgold Posh Spice, bitch of 9 months, lovely to go over, lovely front & depth, good body ratios, moved okay just lacking sparkle & quite heavy over the ribs today; 3 Gaffney’s Haydengold Moment To Shine.

SY (6, 2a): 1 BOB Clarke’s Sunnyoak String Of Pearls, bitch of 16 months, stand out winner, good proportions in leg to depth of body, feminine but strong with good bone, balanced, pretty head, well chiselled with good open nostrils, balanced angles fore & aft, moved well & never tired even after running in every class, nothing is overdone – holds a good level topline standing & moving; 2 RBOB Northmore’s Pennbeacon Oh No Not Susan, scores on movement – really drives well. Good leg to depth proportions, strong bone yet feminine, good spring of rib & in good body & coat condition; 3 Richardson’s Stormhayes Slendidly Chic.

PG (6, 2a): 1 S String Of Pearls; 2 Hewitson’s Seruilia Society Girl, bitch of nearly 2 years, lovely outline when stacked but is quite tense in her stack & leans forward, otherwise nice to go over, good angles, stylish, brisket down to elbow, moved ok if a little slow; 3 Hurrell’s Kadaka King Of Klay.

L (4, 2a): S String Of Pearls; 2 Hurrell’s Klassical Legacy From Double Gold among Gillansgold (Imp), well made 4 years old male , good bone, strong clean level topline, stands on tight catlike feet. Just carrying a little extra weight over the shoulders & around the middle today which affected his movement.

O (4, 2a): S String Of Pearls; 2 Hurrell’s Kadaka Kaos at Gillansgold, dog of 6 years, good bone, correct clean level topline, good bend of stifle. Moved well but carrying a little extra weight over the shoulders today.

Spaniel (Cocker)

P (2): 1 BP Miller’s Eddeswarren Rhaegal, black dog of 7 months, good neck into well laid shoulders, clean topline, very excitable understandably but nice to go over, good angulation, strong through the rear pasterns, very much a baby but best mover in the class - drives; 2 Mercer’s Albertean Nashira, blue roan bitch of nearly 11 months, more mature & together but a little too heavy over the shoulders today which affected the transition of the neck into shoulders. Well made through the front, nice head & good bend if stifle.

SY (3): 1 Ray & Challands’ Annilann Mister Ploppins JW, masculine blue roan boy of 19 months, appeals in outline – stands out, compact in appearance, excellent well sprung ribs, he moves well & is sound doing so, just takes a while to settle into it & get his tail up; 2 Drake’s Lararth Juliet Bravo, blue roan bitch of a year, nice outline, pretty head, nice to go over, good depth of brisket, paces a little before getting into her stride; 3 A Nashira.

PG (4, 2a): 1 RBOB Salmon’s Crimicar Blu Diamond JW, blue roan bitch of 2 years, appeals standing & moving, compact in appearance, nice to go over, strong topline & rear angulation, lovely little mover & tidy catlike feet; 2 L Juliet Bravo.

L (1): 1 BOB McCabe-Bell’s Grandtully Biddy Ford, chocolate bitch of 2 years, so pretty, compact in appearance, good topline, nice to go over, good rear angles with strong rear pasterns, smart & stands out for quality, merry on the move, in good body & coat condition. Well presented.

O (1): 1 Miller’s Eddeswarren Moonlight, golden bitch of 5 years, nice to go over, lovely outline, good bone for size, feminine but strong. Strong topline, in good body & coat condition, drives off well from the rear & is merry on the move.

Spaniel (American Cocker)

PG (1): 1 BP, BOB & PG3 Reed’s Dreamin’ Bluemoon’s New Mazpet through Furian (Imp), black bitch of 1 year, smart, looks good stacked & going around the ring. Handler does a good job with her. She’s a little unsettled but thought she was well made & moved well.

O (1): 1 RBOB Reed’s Jaclee Trails Of Gold over Furian, buff bitch of 4 years, appeals in head, nice bone for size, good rear angulation. Preferred the transition of neck into shoulders of BOB.

Retriever (Flat Coated)

P (6, 2a): What a super quality class – I think I had a smile on my face the whole time! 1 BP & PG1 Jones’ Braemist Chase The Stars, black bitch of nearly 12 months & stands out standing & moving. Lovely neck into shoulders, good topline & angulation. Lovely bone for size, yet feminine. Stands on lovely tight round feet. Much more mature & together than the rest of the class. Well done on your Group win; 2 May’s Covenstead Whistleblower at Lussac, raw baby boy at just 6 months but what a lovely frame & so incredibly balanced, lovely quality to him, brisket is down, clean neck into well laid shoulders, matching rear angles, good mover – free & easy. Lovely quality; 3 May’s Lussac Cookie Quartz.

SY (3, 1a): 1 RBOB Bowen’s Clandrift Funky Angel JW, black bitch coming up 2 years, clear winner, lovely quality bitch, clean neck into well laid shoulders, good strong topline, front & rear angles, balanced all through, correct ribbing, good mover with lovely muscled thighs, quality exhibit; 2 Phelp’s Pippolola Darting Moor, black dog of 17 months, good strong topline, brisket down to elbow, a little long in leg to body depth & a little close behind.

PG (3, 1a): 1 Holden’s Fairwinds Flowertot, well made with good strong topline & rear angulation, stands on good well arched feet. Would like more size, bone & substance; 2 Holden’s Dymexe I Love To Boogie, good rear angulation, good size & bone but preferred outline & movement of 1.

L (5): 1 BOB & G3 Bowen’s Clandrift Make It Funky JW, black dog, litter brother to RBOB. Lovely male, appeals standing & moving, masculine with good bone, good neck into shoulders, correct ribbing, strong over the topline & through the loin, moderate bend of stifle, lovely muscled thighs, moved well from strong rear pasterns; 2 Jackson’s Manteauplat Margaux, bitch of nearly 5 years, feminine & pretty, very smart standing, good depth of brisket, well-muscled, correct rear angulation. Drops her head on the move which affects her front movement.

O (3, a).
