Pontypool & District Canine Society

I would like to thank the Committee of Pontypool DCS for the invitation to judge at their show. As I always find in Wales, fit dogs, presented well and handled beautifully. Some decisions were difficult to make in some breeds and the excellent quality of exhibits in BIS, BPIS and BVIS was outstanding.

BIS saw a strong, robust and free moving Clumber from the Gundog Group, excellent in bone and muscling, strong head type and good feet. A Dobermann from the Working Group, one I have judged before and he has done well under me. From the Utility Group, a beautiful Tibetan Terrier, oozing type and quality, captivating coat, soundness throughout. A very lovely Norwegian Buhund from the Pastoral Group, very typy, lovely in head, strong, sound, shown in lovely coat. The Terrier Group winner was a fabulous young Cesky Terrier, full of type and muscle, lovely head, presented and handled immaculately. From the Toy Group was a Japanese Chin, so sweet and correct, sound mover and wonderful expression. I judged the Hound Group and my pick there was a strong and elegant Borzoi, full of character and type, well muscled throughout. Certainly one of the best line ups I have had the chance to consider. My choice for BIS was Webb & Mullins' MULTI CH PROTOCOL'S THE MIDAS TOUCH (IMP USA) JW. I judged this Dog just 2 months ago and my critique then was this "Dog just over 3, in his prime with ample substance and muscle throughout. Lovely in profile, masculine head, good eye, lovely muzzle depth, strong neck of excellent length, well laid shoulder, excellent in topline and tail set. Deep and long through rib and brisket. Excellent topline. I loved his relaxed presence and he was just excellent on the move. Driving, robust gait, true coming and going" within the BIS line up I expect a little bit more, a bit extra of that particular presence that says "just pick me". This lad just oozes this for me, I found him, once again, irresistible. RBIS was the Tibetan Terrier Plummer & Plummer & Knight & Bingham's ARAKI COLOUR MY WORLD FOR TETSIKARMA who I could not take my eyes off. This bitch, at nearly 2.5 years old, just oozed type and quality for me. Shown in a lovely coat, smoke coloured, plenty of attitude when moving. Hard condition of muscling, good feet, driving action on the move.

BPIS was a direct shoot-out between the two standout exhibits from the lovely seven sent through. Rees & Rees' MERCHINETES TALIESIN AT TYPICA, pipped the Lhasa Apso, Barnett & Carter's ALAMIKS SO MACHO by a whisker. BPIS Rees & Rees' MERCHINETES TALIESIN AT TYPICA, a Dog at nearly one year old, absolutely delightful to judge, of a good height and compact in profile, sweet expression in a well balanced head, excellent length to neck, correctly placed shoulder with good length return. Correct depth to chest for age, lovely topline, well muscled for age and shown on tight feet. Moved out robustly and true with a driving gait. One I will watch. Barnett & Carter's ALAMIKS SO MACHO 11 months Lhasa Apso, very similar superlatives from me, excellent in head, neck length, body, super muscling for age, fabulous gaiting action, full of attitude and showmanship in a correct form. Handled to perfection. RBPIS

BVIS was another stiff competition, my choice for BVIS was the Standard Long-Haired Dachshund, Lewis' TRIXHUND OBSESSION a Black and Tan Bitch at 7.5 years old, I was quite taken with the zest this girl had for showing. Nicely shaped correct head, good length of neck, lovely through shoulders, topline and rib. Strong loin, well muscled rear quarters. Shown in a lovely condition coat and moved so true with excellent drive.

RBVIS was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Antonio's CH GAVSTAFF'S MAN IN BLACK FOR ANTONIOSTAFF JW SHCEX OSW VW Black Dog at 7.5 years old, just fabulous for size and construction, well muscled throughout. Excellent in head, broad across the skull, lovely eye, strong neck through well developed and strongly muscled body. Outstanding Stafford for me.
