Vulnerable Native Breeds Open Show

Saturday 15th August 2026

Anthony White (Paduan)

I was honoured to be asked to judge English Setters at this show, and help in any way towards enhancing the profile of vulnerable breeds within the UK. The classes were held outdoors and mercifully the recent baking hot weather had relented enough to make the conditions just about right for dogs, owners and judges alike. My thanks to the stewards and the show management for keeping things running smoothly.

ENGLISH SETTER

Puppy (1 entered)

1 Wilkinson-Sergeant's WALSHAW STAR STRUCK A very pretty 11 month old Tricolour bitch with a beautiful kind expression on a good head with just the right amount of occiput, ears set neatly on low, with a dark eye and a skull to muzzle of equal ratio. Front legs straight to nice tight paws, with good layback of shoulder resulting in good angulation to the point of shoulder and elbow. Level top line with the croup that shows a gentle curve into the tail set well. Rear angulation and bend of stifle good, with rear paws neatly under the point of the buttock. In profile this girl presents a pleasing outline . Movement was a little bit eratic - but this is to be expected for a puppy and will improve as she gets used to handling distractions - otherwise sound and plenty of drive. A very attractive girl who should have a lot going for her in the future. BPIB.

Special Yearling (4 entered, 2 absentees)

1 Atyeo & Taylor's SAMELEN ETHEREAL LEGACY A smartly turned out Tricolour bitch of 13 months age. A nice kind expression with good head structure, ears set low and neatly on head. Good bone on the front legs with elbows in a good straight line from the well laid back shoulders through to strong pasterns and nice tight feet. Good spring of rib across a deep chest giving a sturdy well balanced frame. Short coupled into a tight loin and good rear angulation. Moved confidently with correct stride but holding her tail a little higher than her top line on this occasion. Presented in lovely coat and looks mature for her age. RBOB

2 Szal's GOLDBIRCH NORTHERN JAZZ JW A neat and tidy Blue Belton dog of 23 months with solid masculine features in good coat. Head proportions correct, with flews set square to face and with a dark eye. Presented in good coat. Deep chested with front legs in a nice straight line from the shoulders through the elbows. Paws I would have liked a little tighter. Angulation ok, with good muscle front and rear. Slightly erratic on the move and a little proud of his tail today. So little to choose from between 1 and 2, but movement made the difference today.

Open Dog (2 entered, 1 absent)

1 Wilkinson-Sergeant's PHENSET FIRESTORM A solid powerfully built 6 year old Orange Belton boy who clearly knows his stuff and shows himself off to his own advantage. Excellent masculine head with good occiput, flews set square and has a focused but kind expression. Nice dark eyes, ears set correctly, muscular neck leading to well laid back shoulders and good angles down straight through the elbows into tight feet and well off for bone throughout. Lovely deep chest with good spring of rib, through a level back to correct coupling to well muscled rear legs with good bend of stifle. Moved with power, drive and focus with slashing tail held level with top line. A real eye catcher and pleased to award him BOB.
