National Gundog Association

Breed: English Setter

Thank you to the NGA committee for the kind invitation to judge. I would also like to thank my stewards Roger and John for their excellent work in keeping the ring running smoothly on what was a rather hot day for us all. I was pleased with my CC and RCC winners who, in my opinion, were good examples of my interpretation of the breed standard.

MPD (2)

1st Adams’ Alolfrana Xclusive Party

O/B dog who appealed to me for his overall shape and construction. He had a lovely lean head with a hint of fun in his dark eyes. Good length of neck flowing into well constructed shoulders, good depth of brisket and spring of rib for age with elbows well tucked in, correct in topline which in turn leads to balanced rear angulation. He is maturing in the right direction and moved steadily and confidently around the ring. A promising puppy. Pleased to award him Best Puppy Dog & Best Puppy In Breed.

2nd Corfield & Corfield & Derry’s Balvenie Glen Douglas at Indibrooke

B/B/T dog with a pleasing head, lovely dark eyes and a typical expression. Good reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and level topline giving a clean balanced outline, he is well made throughout and with the right body proportions for his age. Happy on the move, enjoying himself just as he should be at this stage.

1st Sayers’ Droveborough Blue Moon

B/B dog with plenty to like. Beautifully shaped head with dark eyes and melting expression. Clean through the neck and shoulders, good front assembly with balanced angulation front and rear and firm topline. As expected at this age he needs to body up, but all the essentials are there for a promising future. Moved out with plenty of enthusiasm with lovely slashing tail action.

2nd Lawson’s Summerseve Cezanne JW

Promising B/B/T who presents a balanced outline on first look. I liked his head which is of good proportions, dark well shaped eyes and low set ears. Good length of neck leading into well-placed shoulders, level topline and well angulated rear. Such a shame he was affected by the heat as I thought he may be my winner, but unfortunately he would not cooperate on the move today.

3rd Stephenson’s Bondgate Classical Drama

YD (2)

1st Neath’s Albadora Total Madness JW

B/B who is eyecatching in profile. Masculine well-proportioned head with lovely dark eye and soft expression. He had a good reach of neck, good front with elbows tucked in. Well sprung ribs with plenty of depth and stands on good legs and neat feet. Sound and true on the move, maintaining his topline at all times. Well presented in super coat and condition and considered for top honours.

2nd Stowell’s Bondgate Overdramatic

B/B who gave his handler such a hard time but settled in the later classes. At this stage he is rangier in appearance and just needs time to fill his frame compared to class winner. Attractive head with good eye shape and a hint of devilment in his expression. He has a muscular neck leading into well placed shoulders. He stands on good legs but needs to coordinate his feet on the move.

1st Adams’ Alolfrana Xclusive Party

2nd Stephenson’s Bondgate Classical Drama

Attractive B/B who like his brother in the previous class needs time to fill his frame at present. He has a masculine head of good proportions, giving a kind expression. Strong neck of good length, lovely and clean over well placed shoulders, good front with elbows tucked in, firm topline and well-muscled hindquarters. Moved out with confidence, but I preferred the overall outline of the class winner today.

1st Tompsett’s Radbrooks Brothers in Arms

B/B who is out of a smaller mould but is of good type and presents an elegant outline. Attractive head with dark eye and pleasing expression. Elegant long neck and correct layback of shoulder, good depth of chest and firm topline, although his low tailset detracts from his outline on the move.

2nd Williams’ Wandsfell Keep Me Close

O/B dog who was presented in gleaming condition by his owner. Handsome head of good proportions and kind expression. Good reach of neck into correct shoulders, but still needs to develop in his forechest, has well muscled quarters and presented in firm condition. Unlucky to meet class winner but pleased to award him Best Special Beginner.

1st Pearce’s Westonfields Frenchrunner

Sound B/B dog with overall balance, elegance and style. He really caught my attention in this class and in the final lineup. I liked his balanced handsome head with the right amount of chiselling, good stop, dark eye and low set ears. Clean reach of neck into well laid shoulder, chest well developed, firm topline, well sprung ribs carried back, strong hindquarters and is well muscled throughout. He moved out with such purpose and really powered with reach and drive. DCC and thrilled to hear this was his third. – Congratulations!

2nd Derry & Schoneville & Williamson’s Hawklawn Hazzard County at Balvenie JW

Stylish b/b/t dog who I last judged as a minor puppy so was pleased to see him today as a mature dog. Balanced throughout and soundly constructed. Masculine lean head of good proportions and well worked, darkest of eyes and with soft expression. Muscular arched neck leading to well placed shoulders, straight in front, elbows close to body. Stands on good bone and neat feet. Disappointed he just didn’t get going on the move and was lacking his usual spark.

3rd Williams’ Richecca Midwinter

OD (2)

1st Osman’s Sh Ch Bournehouse Sirocco over Marissolo JW ShCEx OSW

B/B/T dog who I last judged as a junior and has matured well and now presents an outline and appearance that is one of balance and elegance. Beautiful head with dark expressive eyes, correct length of muzzle and low set ears. Long neck set into well placed shoulders, good body proportions with ribs well back and is firm through loin. He is well off for bone and with the best of feet, has balanced angulation front and rear with strong muscled hindquarters and correct tailset. He was feeling the heat on the move today but did enough to impress me to be awarded the RCC.

2nd Darley’s Severnsett Gold Sovereign

O/B who was presented in excellent condition. He presents a balanced outline when stood. Handsome masculine head of good proportions, well defined stop with pleasing expression. He has a long muscular neck with a good layback of shoulder, is straight in front with elbows tucked in. Good forechest and depth of brisket with well sprung ribs and firm topline, stands on good legs and neat feet. Another who just didn’t move out as well today.
