BORDER COLLIE CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN 50TH NNIVERSARY SHOW 15 MARCH 2026
Judge: Mrs T Buckley (Ballyann) [Australia]
I would like to thank the Club for the wonderful opportunity given to me to judge your 50th Anniversary show. I considered it a great honour and a privilege to be asked to judge your dogs. I was delighted by the entry received and thank all the exhibitors for bringing out their Border Collies today. I trust that you enjoyed your day as much as I did. The hospitality afforded by the Club was second to none, and the very generous gifts given to me left me overwhelmed and speechless. The sportsmanship I observed was excellent and I appreciated the way my decisions were accepted with good grace.
My winning dogs were truly deserving of their places, with many a decision for honours in each class being extremely close.
From my observations, I feel the strength lies with your bitches, and there were many quality bitches presented to me who would be worthy of top awards. The quantity of top dogs was slightly less but they were by no means lesser in quality.
Overall, I found that coat quality and presentation were excellent, as were the heads, but there were some rounder eyes that can detract from the correct Border Collie expression. Some straight fronts and short upper arms are of concern as is several dogs being quite close behind. Rear angulation on most was good also. Body proportions overall were very good with very few of a square appearance.
My Best in Show winner gave me everything I was looking for in type, balance and soundness, and my Runner Up was a delightful bitch who pushed hard for that top spot. I am well known for having a soft spot for a blue and this one did not disappoint! The dog CC winner typed up well with my bitch CC and was certainly not disgraced by his ultimate Best Opposite Sex in Show award. The Reserve dog was also an excellent example of the breed.
My very best wishes to you all in your future endeavours in the show ring and the whelping box, and I thank you once again for making this dream come true appointment a reality.

Class 1. Baby Puppy Dog
Entries: 2 Absentees: 0
1st Place 4 – Thwaitlake What Was That (Mr A & Miss L & Miss K Akester & Wiltshire & Aran)
Almost 6 month old dog. A substantial boy with good strength in muzzle but stop and backskull need to develop further to balance his head. Very good body proportions with balanced angulation and good lay of croup. Level topline. Well boned with excellent feet. Moved soundly out and back, with side gait displaying moderate reach and drive with minimum lift of the feet. Kept his shape very well on the move. Correct tail carriage with upward swirl at end.
2nd Place 108 – Kirkwind Mighty Moth Mcgee (Ms J E Mercer)
4 month old dog. Finer overall than 1st place but with a good body shape and length of body. Proportionate head with excellent dark eye and mild expression. Balanced angulation and good forechest. Topline just a little soft behind withers. He was unsettled on the move, only showing glimpses of his side gait which had fairly balanced strides but he was close behind and crossed a little in front, lifting front feet a fraction higher than preferred.
