It was a pleasure for me to spend a morning with one of my favourite breeds. It was going to be a very busy weekend for the Chows and their owners, so a special thanks to our great stewards, Roger and Jan, for keeping it all going.
I was very pleased with the temperaments throughout the entry, and no Breed Watch issues were observed.
While I am always cautious about preaching to breeders, I do feel it is important to make some reference to what I consider the true essence of a Chow Chow, and what breeders should take care to preserve. This wonderful breed is unique within the Spitz family, possessing many characteristics that are distinctly and unmistakably Chow. Without question, the head detailing is very important, and I was very pleased overall with the heads. Squareness, short coupled and size are areas that need further discussion.
Today, I found a number of dogs that were not the desired square and some tended to be rather long in loin. There were also some exhibits that were low on leg, which detracted from overall balance. Size is another area that gives some cause for concern, particularly in bitches, where they could easily be mistaken for males.
That said, movement and temperaments were generally good throughout the entry. Coats varied considerably, from pristine to those in “need of attention”, and from full to completely out of coat.
It was particularly encouraging to see several very promising youngsters coming through, which is always a good sign for any breed.
