Birmingham Dog Show Society Ltd

Breed: Griffon Bruxellois

A lovely day amongst one of my favourite breeds. I was struck by the depth of quality in today’s entry, especially in the younger classes. It was a rather good day for the Red/ Rough’s – I would like to see more of the other colours that can challenge their ginger cousins. Thank you all for a super entry with such depth of quality. Special thanks to our hard-working stewards who kept everything moving.

The expression “nice things come in small boxes” applies to this Red Rough. Super typey outline with a very well laid out head, which gives the correct balance of a large circle on a small square. Very typical expression, perfect ear set, size and carriage. Excellent chin and well-placed nose. Typical cobby, square, sturdy body. Excellent fore-chest. Excellent bone & feet. Moves well, holding a typical shape at all times. Coat was in mint condition. Was unlucky to come up against the maturity of the Open Winner, but could not deny him the Res CC. I hope other breeders realise how valuable a dog like this can be to re-introduce some of the breed detailing we have lost.

If judging was a “tick-box” exercise, this Red Rough male would score a Ten. He has a lovely masculine head, excellent skull shape, good nose placement, excellent ear set and carriage, which all combine to give him the most appealing expression. He also has lovely balance for size. Very nicely constructed and fits into the required square outline, excellent bone and good fore-chest. Good feet. He is in super overall condition and comes into his own on the move with an effortless stride, holding a typical shape at all times. Lovely clear rich red colour. Excellent temperament. DCC & BOB

2nd: MACKAY, Mr Gordon & MACKAY, Mrs Pauline Osthaen A Kind Of Magic

Black & tan Smooth who is a favourite of mine, taking the Res CC under me the last time I judged. He has a lovely head, well-shaped eye, but could be a fraction darker. Excellent typical outline, short coat and well-marked. He has matured nicely and has good body and substance. A little lethargic on the move today and was unfortunate to meet 1

Red Rough with a lot of breed qualities that really appealed to me. Well laid out head, good skull, excellent nose placement, good chin and excellent ear set, size and carriage. Loved her outline and body shape, which is short, cobby, strong but still feminine. A little loose in front, but in profile holds a lovely typical outline with firm topline and super tail set and carriage. Excellent coat colour of correct texture. Wonderful, active, engaging temperament. Res CC

Red Rough with the most appealing head and true, typical expression. Well-shaped, dark eye, well placed nose, with open nostrils, pigment could be stronger but does not distract from her textbook expression. Lovely, neat, well set & carried ears. Excellent outline, cobby and square, with good fore-chest and excellent bone and substance. Colour is clearing & in excellent jacket of correct texture. Excellent topline and tail set. Moves well holding a typical shape. She has a very sweet disposition & temperament. BCC, which I understand is her 3rd!
