NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING RETRIEVER — BREED CRITIQUE - Scottish Kennel Club It was a great pleasure to judge the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. I found a number of very good exhibits with excellent breed type, lovely heads, good construction and some particularly pleasing movement. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever should be a medium-sized, compact, powerful and well-muscled dog, but never heavy or cumbersome. The breed needs sufficient leg length to maintain the correct proportions and athletic outline required of a working retriever. This was something I was particularly conscious of today. I felt that some exhibits were becoming a little short on leg and heavier than I would ideally like. Compact does not mean low to the ground or over-substantial. The Toller should retain a balanced, athletic appearance, with enough leg length to give the correct proportions and freedom of movement. DOGS POST GRADUATE DOG 1st — Tollpepper Celtic Zephyr — Mrs J M & Miss E K Trickett & O'Connor I particularly liked this dog for his size and overall construction. A moderate dog with good angles and pleasing balance throughout. Lovely masculine wedge-shaped head with a kind expression and good ear placement. Good neck set and a pleasing overall outline. Shown in good coat, which added to the correct breed picture. Moved well, with good balance between front and rear. A very pleasing moderate dog and one that retained the athletic qualities I look for in the breed. 2nd — Danehaven Deeks — Mrs S Heys Similar remarks apply. Another moderate, well-balanced dog with good breed type. Typey wedge-shaped head with correct ear set and good neck placement into the shoulder. Good overall proportions. A little closer behind on the move today, where I would have preferred to see stronger rear drive and cleaner parallel action. 3rd — Afonbach River Guardian — Ms A M & Miss A L Adshead A pleasing dog with good breed qualities. OPEN DOG 1st — Ir Sh Ch Eusanit Proper Job JW — Mrs T M & Miss S Westwood — Best DOG BEST OF BREED & BEST VETERAN A super Open class and a very worthy winner. A strong masculine dog with plenty of substance and good size. Excellent wedge-shaped head and a strong neck. Pleasing shoulder placement and well-sprung ribs. Strong rear construction and very good movement, with a good stride and drive , parallel rear . His tail was well carried and added to the characteristic Toller picture. He also showed himself extremely well, a proper little showman who clearly enjoyed his time in the ring. A very complete dog who combined substance, breed type and movement particularly well. I was delighted to award him the Best Dog and ultimately Best of Breed. 2nd — Cretshengan Kitchi Lake (AI) — Mr E & Mrs E Gough — RESERVE DOG Lots to like about this dog. Very pleasing shape with a good head and eye, giving a lovely Toller expression. Well-placed shoulders and good overall balance. He has many of the qualities I look for in the breed. Unfortunately, he was not quite as clean behind on the move today. I would ideally like to see more parallel, positive rear movement and stronger drive. Nevertheless, a very nice dog with plenty of quality and a worthy Reserve Dog in a nice entry 3rd — Sh Ch Schindow Junior Cowboy with Cretshengan — Mr P G & Mrs J Fielder A quality Champion with good breed type and a pleasing overall picture. SPECIAL BEGINNER DOG 1st — Danehaven Deeks — Mrs S Heys A nicely balanced dog with a moderate outline and good angles. Lovely wedge-shaped head and good breed expression. Won the class on movement, showing better overall balance and action today. 2nd — Delphox Guiser — Mr L Gibson A moderate dog with good balance and well-matched angles. I would have liked to see more positivity in movement. The Toller should have a springy, jaunty action with good reach and strong rear drive, and I would have liked him to show more of this today. BITCHES PUPPY BITCH 1st — Sinsircariad Dragon Fruit — Mr J Oscroft — BEST PUPPY A sweet puppy with lots of promise. Lovely wedge-shaped head with good eye shape and well-placed ears. Good overall breed type and a pleasing outline. Moved steadily and showed good promise for the future. At this age there is plenty of time for her body and construction to mature and strengthen. A very promising young bitch and a worthy Best Puppy. 2nd — Danehaven Homathko — Miss C Powley A nice puppy with good breed qualities. Not as forward as 1st , needs more time but pleasing puppy. POST GRADUATE BITCH This was a particularly strong class with some lovely young bitches. 1st — Rosettia Lady Marmalade — Mrs H F & Mr M Dalton It was a real pleasure to judge this youngster. She is so well put together and has a lovely overall balance. Beautiful classic wedge-shaped head with the correct eye shape and a lovely breed expression. Strong neck and excellent proportions. I particularly liked her height-to-body ratio, which gives her the correct athletic outline without being either too short-legged or too long in body. She has plenty of promise and is a very exciting young bitch. 2nd — Eusanit What The Fuggle Roanjora JW — Mrs T, Miss S & Miss R Westwood & McDonald A smart bitch who was unfortunate to meet my winner today. Classic wedge-shaped head, strong neck and good overall construction. Straight front and moved very true in all directions. A lovely bitch with many qualities and a very pleasing overall balance. 3rd — Cfyre's High Tea at Tollpepper JW (Imp Can) — Mrs J M Trickett A quality bitch with good breed characteristics. OPEN BITCH This was a very large class, and I felt a larger ring would have allowed the exhibits to demonstrate their movement and overall qualities to better advantage. 1st — Afonbach Syrax JW — Ms A M & Miss A L Adshead — BITCH CC & BEST OF BREED I liked her very much and was delighted to award her the Best Bitch A classic, moderate bitch with excellent breed type and lovely balance. Beautiful wedge-shaped head and excellent neck placement, with the neck flowing neatly into well-placed shoulders. I particularly liked her moderation. She has sufficient substance without becoming heavy, and importantly retains the leg length and athletic proportions I feel are essential to the breed. Her standing outline is excellent, but it was her movement that really impressed me. She moved very well with a lovely ground-covering stride, showing good reach and parallel strong rear drive, showing springy, jaunty, powerful and efficient, with good reach in front and drive from behind. She combines moderation, balance, correct breed type and excellent movement. she should make up she was a very worthy Best Bitch in a good entry . 2nd — Travelda's Genevieve Pine avec Eusanit (Imp USA) — Mrs T M & Miss S Westwood An interesting bitch who is different in type from my winner but possesses many of the qualities I was looking for. Good size and strength with excellent musculature. A powerful, substantial bitch who nevertheless moved very well. I preferred the overall moderation and balance of my winner. A very good bitch and a worthy Reserve Bitch 3rd — Ir Sh Ch Coedhelyg Ho Pes and Dreams An Ch 25 Cjw25 Cw25/26 Ir/Int Jch Jd — Ms J & Miss Sr Beaumont A lovely Champion bitch with many good breed qualities. SPECIAL BEGINNER BITCH 1st — Tiamaria Bella Rosa — Mrs N S Rice — BEST SPECIAL BEGINNER A pleasing bitch with good breed type and a nice overall outline. Wedge head won, decent reach and drive , shows promise . 2nd — Danehaven Freshwater — Mr G & Mrs P Surrall , good overall balance and movement was okay , not the movement of 1st . 3rd — Tollpepper Dawn Rising — Mrs L & Mr D Gibbons Tania Gardner Danwish
