Three Counties 2026 – Judge’s Critique

Thank you to all the exhibitors for entering under me. It was a busy weekend coinciding with the WDS so it was great to have so many quality exhibits to go over.

I was delighted to see some super youngsters coming through, it’s been a while since we had such a strong turnout of Puppies which is great for the breed. On the whole, bites are improving, and I felt movement and construction had also improved since last time I judged. The dogs that were allowed to move on a loose lead were able to show themselves to best advantage, allowing their natural movement, balance and reach and drive to be appreciated.

There were some excellent coats on display today, some at various stages of maturity; I was pleased to see so many with a clear wheaten colour.

I was particularly pleased with my principal winners; standing together in the final challenge, my DCC and BCC made a beautifully matched pair - balanced, moderate and so pleasing together.

PD 4,0

This was such a strong class and I expect they could switch places on another day.

1st Silkcroft Play On Repeat (Mr C W & Mrs C L Satherley)

An upstanding 9-month-old boy with beautiful overall balance. Compact and short-coupled, with excellent long, well laid-back shoulders and a perfectly straight front. Clear, bright dark hazel eye; lovely large teeth with a perfect scissor bite. Coat developing well for age, with good tail carriage. He covered the ground so well in the challenge and just beat his litter sister to take BP.

2nd Denzilly Making Waves with Sawheaten (Mr K & Mrs K Francis)

10 months. Beautiful soft coat already showing lovely loose waves and curls, very pleasing in one so young. Large white teeth with a lovely scissor bite and good, well-laid-back shoulders. He was a little unsettled on the move today, which prevented him from showing himself to best advantage. One to watch.

1st Crofftysofty Hay Jude (Mrs J Amel-Azizpour)

A happy boy with a nice soft coat, large teeth and good dark pigment. Good head, muzzle parallel with the skull. Well presented. Difficult to assess his movement as he was a little preoccupied by what was on the grass!

1st Ch Flaxela Perfect Storm (ai) (Mrs P & Mr J Clarke)

Stunning boy. Beautifully made, with excellent well-laid-back shoulders, well-sprung ribs and a lovely deep chest. Strong neck and very well muscled – a true terrier. He moved with real purpose, showing lovely reach in front and good drive behind, while holding a perfectly level topline on the move. Perfect scissor bite, good dark pigment and a super soft coat in clear wheaten, falling in loose curls. Beautifully presented and turned out. DCC & BOB.

2nd Ir Ch Teaghlach Angel Kinaelan (Imp Esp) (Mr A & Mrs B R Walsh & Hanna)

A well-made dog with a beautiful example of the Irish-type coat, soft and silky with lovely loose waves, excellent large teeth and a good scissor bite. Good dark pigment and a lovely big black nose. A very happy boy – and he smelt lovely!

1st Ch/Am/Can/Int Ch Silkcroft Freeze Frame JW JWW18 Bel JCh (Mr C W & Mrs C L & Mrs H B Satherley & Satherley & Bye)

A stunning example of the breed. Eight years old and wears it exceptionally well. Beautifully made, with well-laid-back shoulders and a lovely reach of neck running cleanly into the shoulders. His coat lay in soft, loose curls and looked absolutely stunning, shining in the sun. Compact and short-coupled, he showed a long reach in front and drive from behind, moving with balance and purpose. His movement is exemplary. RDCC.

2nd Flaxela Living Legend of Gwendonydd (Mrs S V & Mr G S Williams)

10½ years old and in peak condition for his age. Moderate, balanced and without exaggeration. Lovely coat colour of ripening wheat, falling in soft, loose curls. Super tail set and carriage. I preferred the movement of 1 today.

PB 6,1

1st Silkcroft Going Viral (Mr C W & Mrs C L Satherley)

8½ months old. A beautifully balanced bitch, well presented, so steady on the move. Compact and short-coupled, with fabulous large teeth and a pretty, feminine head. Coat still needs to mature but correct for age. Didn’t put a foot wrong. She just lost out in the challenge for BP to her litter brother.

2nd Calvenace Rebel Rebel (Ms T J & Mr S Hammond & Evans)

Beautiful rich, clear wheaten colour and coat, with lovely loose, soft waves. Large teeth with a good scissor bite, excellent angles, well-laid-back shoulders and a compact, short-coupled outline. Very well made. A sassy girl who, once she settles, will be one to watch.

1st Silkcroft Just Like Magic (Mr C W & Mrs C L & Mrs H B Satherley & Satherley & Bye)

Stood alone in the class at 16 months. A happy, feminine bitch; so pretty, well balanced, compact and short-coupled, with a straight, level topline and good muscle. Her coat is simply stunning: correct ripening-wheat colour, lovely and soft — hands-on to be believed! Fabulous for age and can only get better. I see a bright future for this little lady. RBCC.

PGB 1,0

1st Crofftysofty Bee Yonce (Mrs A Fallon)

23 months. A nice, feminine bitch with a good scissor bite, a lovely neck and a compact, short-coupled body. Her coat is starting to come through nicely now. Moved well.

LB 5,0

1st Hopla Kia at Gwendonydd (Imp Dnk) (Mrs S V & Mr G S Williams)

19 months. A beautifully balanced bitch with well-laid-back shoulders, good tail carriage and good dark pigment. At 19 months her coat is still maturing and deserving of the latitude given to a young coat; what she had was a lovely soft texture and good clear wheaten colour. Her movement and side gait were a pleasure to watch, with super reach in front and drive behind, covering the ground effortlessly. At the top end for size, she remained beautifully balanced and moderate. Full of spirit and ring presence. For me, she was the bitch who most completely fitted my interpretation of the breed standard on the day. BCC.

2nd Keevasdream Purple Bliss for Spudler (Mrs J & Mr G Grimes & Watson)

A pretty bitch with a feminine head. Well handled and moved well, showing reach in front and drive behind. Pushed my winner hard; just a little longer cast than 1.

Open Bitch 6,0

1st Ch Flaxela Flirtini at Daisymaes JW (ai) (Mr S & Mrs B Howes)

A clear winner in this class. Beautiful coat and very well made. Compact and short-coupled, with a straight, level topline and good tail set and carriage. Good scissor bite, well-laid-back shoulders, a lovely big black nose and good dark pigment. Thin leathers and moderate in every way - balanced and without exaggeration. A bitch worthy of her Champion status.

2nd Ch Silkcroft Fortune and Glory JW (Mr C W & Mrs C L Satherley)

3½ years. Head - correct parallel planes, topline of the muzzle straight and parallel with the skull, straight, level topline held on the move . I would prefer to see her shown on a looser lead, which I feel would allow her to present herself more naturally.
