German Spitz (Mittel)

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for their kind invitation, and my steward, Mrs Jill Massingham, who ensured the day ran so smoothly.

Most importantly, I would like to thank the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of judging such a lovely quality entry of 26 dogs from an entry of 30.

This was my first appointment awarding Challenge Certificates in this beautiful breed, and I was honoured to assess such a worthy entry. While the overall quality was pleasing, several exhibits were not in full coat on the day, which unfortunately put them out of contention for the Challenge Certificates. There were one or two who would not go under the measure.

1st: Fox – Pufnstuf Is Leu At Vixenstar

Black & Tan, nearly 12 months old. A beautiful puppy with a masculine, well-shaped head and a correct scissor bite. He has well-set, small ears and dark, oval eyes with the correct oblique expression. Lovely body with good depth of chest and a pleasing square outline. Well-ribbed with a firm topline and moderately angulated hindquarters. Moved briskly with good drive on sound feet. Well coated and presented in excellent condition throughout. A quality puppy who was awarded Best Dog Puppy and Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd: Hall – Pufnstuf Is U Charmed

Black, almost 12 months old. A well-balanced youngster with a pleasing outline, firm topline, and good tailset. Sound legs and feet, with plenty to admire overall. Moved very soundly and was presented in excellent condition. On the day, I just preferred the size of the winner. I noted that these two are litter mates, and both are very promising young dogs with bright futures.

1st: Barnes – Izlou The Roxstar

Cream, almost 18 months old. A handsome dog with a beautiful masculine head, well-set small erect ears, and medium-sized dark oval eyes with black rims, giving a lovely expression. Excellent pigmentation and a correct scissor bite. Moderate length of neck flowing into straight forelegs, with good ribbing, a firm topline, and moderately angulated hindquarters. Moved briskly with good drive on sound feet. Well coated and presented in lovely condition throughout. A quality exhibit, and I was thrilled to award him the Dog CC and Best Opposite Sex in Breed.

2nd: Clarke – Shelayne Riotous Revelry

Brown Sable, just short of 18 months old. A well-bodied dog with a nice compact outline, presented in good coat and lovely condition. Pleasing head with dark eyes, good pigmentation, correct mouth, and good ear carriage. High tailset and sound overall construction. A quality exhibit, but on the day I just preferred the size of the winner.

1st: Griffiths – Cadasaro Hans

Black and white particolour, almost 22 months old. I particularly liked the head proportions on this dog, with excellent pigmentation, oval-shaped, obliquely set eyes, and a complete scissor bite. He has moderately sloping shoulders, correct coat texture, and a good high-set tail carried in a pleasing curve over the back. He moved well, with a lovely outline, and was presented in excellent condition.

2nd: Lowe & Rosebury – Nixtev Blackhawk

Black, 8 years old. A very nice head and expression, with sound movement and presented in lovely condition. On the day, I just preferred the body shape of the winner. I would encourage the handler to enter the Veteran classes, where I feel this dog would be very competitive.

Class LD (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Drechsler – Longsdale’s Derun Around At Jeansway

Black, 2 years old. This dog immediately stood out for his quality and breed type and was a pleasure to go over. An excellent exhibit with a gorgeous masculine wedge-shaped head, moderately defined stop, and medium-sized oval eyes. He has a moderately short neck, moderate tuck-up, level topline, correct proportions of length to height, and a moderately angulated rear. He has tremendous ring presence and moves soundly and effortlessly. Although slightly out of coat today, he has nothing to hide. Presented in immaculate condition.

2nd: Barnes – Izlou All You Knead Is Love

Black, 5 years old. Another attractive dog in a profuse coat of the correct texture. He has a pleasing head and eye, a nice neck, and a good body. I would like him to be more settled for examination on the table, but he showed and moved well. Presented in immaculate condition, as were all the exhibits from this kennel.

3rd: Blight – Longsdale’s Take It Easy

Class OD (5 Entries)

1st: Pearce & Francis – Ch Longsdales Look At Me Now

Black, 2½ years old. This dog immediately stood out for his outstanding quality and breed type and was a pleasure to go over. An excellent exhibit with a gorgeous masculine wedge-shaped head, a moderately defined stop, and medium-sized oval eyes. He has a moderately short neck, moderate tuck-up, a level topline, correct proportions of length to height, and a moderately angulated rear. He has tremendous ring presence and moves soundly with confidence. Difficult to fault when on this form. Sadly, he was slightly out of coat today, which ultimately cost him the top award, but he was a worthy recipient of the Reserve CC. Presented in immaculate condition.

2nd: O’Leary – Cadasaro Gerhard

Cream sable, 3 years old. Another attractive dog in a profuse coat of the correct texture. He has a masculine head with excellent pigmentation, neat, small ears that he used well, a pleasing expression, a nice neck, and a good body. He showed and moved well throughout and was presented in lovely condition. On another day, these two could easily change places.

1st: Barnes – Izlou The Truffle Maker

Black, this ultra-feminine girl, aged 3 years, is of excellent size. She moved with great drive and presence, showing superb style and soundness. Lovely to go over on the table, she has typical head proportions with excellent black eye rims, a lovely neck and shoulders, and good rear quarters. Her coat was in gleaming condition, and she shows herself to her best advantage. Another exhibit presented in superb condition, as always from this kennel. Standing alone, she was a very worthy winner.

Class LB (2 Entries)

1st: Pearce & Francis – Longsdale’s Have Da Heart

Black, 2½ years old, a quality girl with a lovely feminine head and a good scissor bite. Her overall construction is sound, which is reflected in her movement. She has a lovely outgoing, happy temperament and clearly enjoys her time in the ring. I admired her many qualities and she was handled sympathetically to achieve the very best from her. Presented in lovely condition, with excellent balance and a quality coat shown to super advantage.

2nd: Fitton – Nosregor Cassiopeia At Shelayne

Sable, 5 years old, a pleasing feminine head with a correct scissor bite and neat, erect ears. She showed well and moved with a brisk, positive movement. She has sufficient neck for good head carriage, good type, and appealed in body. Presented in good condition.

Class OB (5 Entries)

1st: O’Leary – Cadasaro Hanna

Cream sable, 21 months old. A lovely feminine girl and my star of the day. She caught my eye immediately on entering the ring, with her beautiful, ultra-feminine head, excellent black eye rims, and lovely expression. She has an excellent body shape and a wonderful outline, both standing and on the move. She carried herself around the ring with great style and presence. Perfectly erected, small ears that she used constantly, and she carried her tail correctly at all times. Presented in excellent condition. I was delighted to award her the CC and Best of Breed. I was later informed that this was her third CC.

2nd: Pearce & Francis – Longsdale’s I will Survive

Black, quality feminine girl of lovely type, aged 2½ years. She showed beautifully and moved so soundly, never putting a foot wrong. She has a lovely feminine head with correctly shaped oval eyes, although sadly she was slightly out of coat on the day. She has a moderate, short neck and a well-made body. Presented in excellent condition, as always from this kennel. I was delighted to award her the Reserve CC and was later informed that she had gained her championship title under the new system.
