Lagotto Romagnolo Club of Great Britain
Lagotto Rognolo Club of Great Britain Single Breed Open Show, 30 May 2026.
My thanks have to go to the owners who showed their Lagottos under me on a very hot Saturday afternoon. Thanks also to the LRCGB committee for inviting me to judge this open show which followed on from the first LRCGB championship show. There was a variety of quality amongst the dogs shown but most were of a good quality. Some dogs were being shown for the first time with the owners giving showing a go. A couple of dogs made it difficult for me to over them. Along with those, a few more would benefit from more practice or ring craft classes. My critiques are as follows.
Veteran Dog (3, 0) 1 Ferguson’s Dario Della Cavega. Best Dog, Best Veteran & Reserve Best in Show. 1 7-year-old brown roan dog of excellent quality. Good coat of curls evenly distributed over body. Square, sturdy and robust with masculine head, strong expression and correct proportions. Moderately well laid back shoulders, compact body with short loin and good angulation. Moved freely and tirelessly with drive while maintaining a strong outline. A quality veteran in excellent condition. 2 Nelson’s Mizani Dioro Over Savio. Nearly 9-year-old brown roan dog with pleasing rustic character eith coat of curls and square in outline. Masculine head with pincer bite. Somewhat narrow in chest and lacking hind angulation. Moved freely but could not match the overall balance and quality of the winner.
Puppy Dog (1, 0) 1 Bishop & Norbury’s Bedeslea Fifth Of November. Best Puppy & Reserve Best Dog. 6-month-old brown roan puppy dog of great promise. Squarely built with pleasing proportions and attractive outline. Good forehand, strong body and correct topline. Moved freely and parallel. Coat of wavy curls but still developing but I particularly liked his shape and overall quality.
Junior Dog (1, 0) 1 Colona’s Woody Labando (Imp Srb). This 1-year-old brown dog made it difficult to examine him thoroughly. None the less he was a of square outline with pleasing rustic appearance with loose curls. Presented a balanced overall picture with sufficient quality for his age. The sole exhibit in the class and showed promise for the future.
Novice Dog (3, 0) 1 Webb & Ferguson’s Tigre Di Cassa Ghini. 2½-year-old white and brown marked dog with a pleasing outline and masculine expression. Good chest development, strong topline and correct coat texture and curls. Loin a little longer than ideal but showed sufficient quality to take the class. 2 Drake’s Clamerkin Tawny Emperor. Nearly 3-year-old brown roan dog with narrower skull than ideal. Good chest development and tail carriage but lacked sufficient hind angulation and could not match the balance of the winner.
Post Graduate Dog (2, 0) 1 Sharp’s Bedeslea Prada Milano. 2-year-old brown roan dog of square outline and pleasing proportions. Masculine head with correct skull and muzzle proportions and scissor bite. Strong compact body with good topline and chest development. Slightly lacking in rear angulation but presented a balanced picture and carried a correct coat. 2 Drake’s Clamerkin Brown Onyx. Nearly 3-year-old brown roan dog. Muzzle narrower than ideal with reverse scissor bite. Somewhat untidy in movement and failed to maintain his topline. Coat curls not evenly distributed over the body.
Limit Dog (3, 2a) 1 Willy’s All I Wanted Labando (Imp Srb). 3½-year-old brown roan dog with pleasing square proportions and correct rustic character with a good covering of curls. Masculine head with correct skull and muzzle proportions and good forehand. Better balanced overall than the second-placed dog although movement from the side could be more effective and rear feet crossed at times. 2 Willott & Pragg’s Arcticbreeze On Vacation. 3-year-old brown roan dog with a pleasing overall outline. Good head and forequarters and maintained a sound topline. Moved well but was shorter on leg than the winner which affected overall balance.
Open Dog (1, 0) 1 Bell’s Il Granaio Del Malatesta Dick Dastardly Of Pendlebrier. 3-year-old brown roan dog, sturdy and robust with dense curly coat. Moderately broad head with powerful jaws and pincer bite. Good neck and forequarters with straight forelegs and close-fitting elbows. Chest somewhat wider than ideal but moved soundly overall.
Special Working Gundog Dog (1, 1a) 1 Ferguson’s Truffalusa November Moon From Mizani. 5-year-old brown roan dog of good quality and correct square proportions. Masculine head with strong wedge-shaped muzzle and correct scissor bite. Good neck and forehand construction, strong topline and powerful hindquarters. Moved freely with drive and carried a correct woolly coat.
Veteran Bitch (1, 0) 1 Monk & Monk’s Mizani Diorbe Of Vienna. 9-year-old brown veteran bitch retaining many desirable breed characteristics. Squarely built with a strong body, correct topline and long muscular croup. Moderate bend of stifle and quality woolly coat with thick ring-shaped curls. Moved soundly and continues to display pleasing breed character and overall balance for her age.
Puppy Bitch (3, 0) 1 Norbury & Bishop’s Bedeslea Remember Remember. 6-month-old brown roan puppy bitch with pleasing square outline and good proportions. Coat on the wavy side but still time to develop. Correct scissor bite and relatively short neck. Moved slightly better than the second-placed puppy and showed promise for the future. 2 Ferguson’s Bedeslea Bombshell To Mizani. 6-month-old white and orange marked puppy bitch of square outline. A promising youngster who could not quite match the movement of the winner on the day.
Junior Bitch (3, 1a) 1 John’s Curlycruz Wild Flower At Frommesbeck. 1-year-old white and brown marked bitch with pleasing overall balance. Correct scissor bite, relatively short neck and moderately well laid back shoulders. Straight forelegs with good bone and a correct gently sloping topline. Perhaps not quite as square as ideal but close enough to head the class. 2 Drake’s Il Granaio Del Malatesta Livia Drusilla (Imp Ita). 1-year-old solid off-white bitch. Taller than I would ideally prefer and topline not as firm as the winner’s, which cost her in overall balance.
Novice Bitch (2, 0) 1 Maclennan’s Bedeslea Prada Luisa. Reserve Best Bitch. Nearly 2-year-old brown bitch of pleasing proportions and square outline. Dense curly coat, good topline and balanced profile. Moved freely around the ring and showed sufficient quality to secure the class and Reserve Best Bitch. 2 Perry’s Hunting Track Am I Perfect. Nearly 4-year-old brown roan bitch with a deep chest but somewhat shorter in leg than ideal, affecting her overall balance. Could not match the winner’s proportions on the day.
Post Graduate Bitch (6, 0) 1 Shah’s Lamese Lucia. Nearly 5-year-old brown roan bitch with a feminine expression and pleasing outline. Correct skull to muzzle proportions, slight but evident stop and correct scissor bite. Well-constructed forehand with moderate layback of shoulder and upper arm. Correct woolly coat with thick curls. Slightly close behind but showed the better shape and movement in the class and deserved the win. 2 Bishop & Bishop’s Bedeslea Prada Linea Rossa. 2-year-old brown bitch of square outline with pleasing rustic character. Moderately broad head, muscular shoulders with moderate layback as required and a compact, strong body. Maintained a correct topline and showed moderate angulation behind. Moved freely with good drive and presented a balanced picture throughout. A very close decision between the first two, but I preferred the overall proportions and movement of the winner on this occasion.
Limit Bitch (2, 2a)
Open Bitch (5, 1a) 1 Norbury’s Bedeslea Pradasphere JW. Best Bitch & Best in Show. 2-year-old brown roan bitch of outstanding quality, displaying many of the characteristics expected of the breed. Squarely built, sturdy and robust with correct proportions throughout. Dense coat with thick ring-shaped curls evenly distributed and a visible waterproof undercoat. Moved freely and tirelessly with good drive and presented a balanced outline throughout. A worthy Best Bitch and Best in Show winner. 2 Lillicrap’s Mizani Sebio Iola At Princhetts. 6-year-old brown roan bitch with pleasing rustic character. Correct overall outline with muscular shoulders that are moderately well laid back. Slightly shorter on leg than the winner which affected her overall balance. Moved soundly and maintained a good topline.
Special Working Gundog Bitch (1, 0) 1 Tidall’s Greenbankes Kara. Best Special Working Gundog. 5-year-old white and brown marked bitch, squarely built, sturdy and robust with a dense curly coat of correct woolly texture. Feminine head of moderate breadth, correct scissor bite and relatively short neck. Muscular shoulders with moderate layback and straight forelegs with sturdy bone. Rear pasterns a little upright but moved quite nicely and displayed pleasing overall proportions.
