It was a great honour and privilege to judge Jack Russell Terriers at the SKC All Breed Championship Show, where Challenge Certificates were available for the breed for the very first time. This made the appointment particularly special for me, as it was also my first time awarding Challenge Certificates in the breed.

My sincere thanks go to the Club for the invitation and for placing their trust in me on such a historic and memorable occasion. Thank you also to the officers and committee for their support, and a special thanks must go to the steward who stepped in at very short notice to assist with the smooth running of the ring. Your help was very much appreciated.

Most importantly, I would like to thank the exhibitors for their excellent support and for giving me the opportunity to assess such a quality entry. I greatly appreciated the patience and good humour shown throughout the day, particularly given the long and rather cold wait, together with the change of ring. The sportsmanship shown by exhibitors was much appreciated, as was the care taken in presenting the dogs.

It was also a real privilege to award the crowning Challenge Certificate to the first UK-bred Jack Russell Terrier, a wonderful milestone for the breed and one I shall remember with great pride.

I was further delighted to see my Best of Breed exhibit go on to be shortlisted in the group at the All Breed Championship Show then also to see the same exhibit awarded Best of Breed again at the following General Show, after my judging had concluded, and then go on to take Group 1. This was a tremendous achievement and a lovely endorsement of the quality of the breed on the day.

Overall, it was a pleasure to go over so many exhibits and to see Jack Russell Terriers represented with such enthusiasm, quality and dedication.

Class 1483 Jack Russell Terrier Puppy Dog (5 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 2504 - Locheil Bad Habits (H & A Turner & Macdonald)

A very promising young White and Tan dog who displays good overall breed type and balance at 11months. Head showing ideal proportions for age with flat skull, tapering neatly to a defined stop and well-developed foreface, correct muzzle proportions housing a correct scissor bite. Eyes dark, correctly shaped and set, giving that essential lively and intelligent expression. Ears are correctly placed and carried, framing the head nicely and adding to his expression. Enough length of neck leading into well-laid shoulders, with forechest developing well and good return of upper arm for age and elbows sitting close to the body. Forelegs straight with appropriate bone, pasterns firm, and feet compact. Topline is correct, loin short and strong for age, and maintained on the move with a useful developing ribcage. Chest of good oval shape, not too broad or over-deep, with pleasing ground clearance and easily spannable. Hindquarters well made for age, with good width and muscle beginning to come. Good bend to stifle, hocks low and strong. Tail well set and carried confidently on the move adding to the overall picture of balance. Coat of correct texture and weatherproof quality, predominantly white with acceptable markings. Movement showing both soundness and enthusiasm, with excellent reach and drive for his age. A masculine, well-constructed youngster displaying the proportions, breed character and free, ground-covering movement I was looking for. His balance and quality stood out in the final challenge, and I was pleased to award him the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate and Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd: 2484 - Twinan Silver Dollar (Miss T J Irving)

Another excellent example of the breed at almost 1 year. White and Tan dog, good type in head, shape and ratios although I preferred the head type and purposeful movement of one. 

Good overall size and substance for age and presents a balanced outline. Head of good general proportions, with a pleasing expression. Skull flat and tapers well to the muzzle. Stop defined, nose black, eyes dark and expressive. Ears well set. Neck of fair length, leading into nicely laid shoulders. Front developing well, forelegs straight with good bone. Body of correct length, with a level topline. Ribcage developing in the right direction and spannable, good oval shape and depth. Good ground clearance. Hindquarters of moderate angulation, matching the front well. Moved soundly and happily, though not quite as settled or positive as the winner. Tail well set and carried cheerfully. Coat good in texture and presentation. A quality youngster with good construction.

Class 1484 Jack Russell Terrier Junior Dog (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 2498 - Saredon Rumba (Mrs D Ryan)

Lovely White and Tan dog of good type and balance, showing maturity and ring presence. He has a clean, well-proportioned head with excellent pigment, dark, keen eyes, flat skull with good head to muzzle ratio housing a scissor bite, showing a true terrier expression. Well-laid shoulders with straight, well-boned forelegs and tight feet. Chest is narrow and easily spanned, with a strong, level topline and excellent tail set and carriage. Moves with precision and drive, covering the ground effortlessly with reach from the shoulder and good rear action. Coat is harsh and well presented, with clean markings enhancing a smart, workmanlike outline. 

2nd: 2491 - Locheil I Ain't No Quitter (Mr G & Mrs D M Mackay)

White and Tan dog of pleasing size but longer through the body than the slight rectangular proportion I was looking for. Head is clean with correct muzzle to skull ratio housing a correct scissor bite. Straight front with good bone and tidy feet, chest is spannable and his topline is correct, held well on the move. Moved steadily, although the winner had the advantage in overall balance and the more purposeful, ground-covering action.

1st: 2481 - Navigareamor to Nutkns Tail at Lejamla (Mrs L & Mr A Galloway)

White and tan dog of pleasing size, although somewhat longer through the body than my ideal. Masculine head and expression. Visible forechest with straight, well-boned forelegs. Level through the back, with muscular hindquarters and angulation in balance with the shoulders. Weatherproof coat. Moved cleanly with useful reach.

1st: 2489 - Multi Ch Jackandfish Smasher 2xww Ew (Mrs O Klimova)

An outstanding representative of the breed who immediately appealed for type, balance and functional construction. White and Tan dog that is immediately appealing for type, balance and overall construction. Strong, active and lithe, presenting the correct rectangular outline. Full of character, alert and confident, with the keen expression so important in the breed. Excellent masculine head proportions, skull flat and of moderate width, tapering correctly through the eyes to a strong muzzle. Well-defined stop without exaggeration, well-developed cheek muscles, black nose and tight lips. Dark, almond-shaped eyes with well-pigmented rims giving a sharp, intelligent expression. Ears well set, of good texture and mobility, carried close and completing the head picture. Strong jaws with a correct scissor bite. Clean, strong neck of good length, flowing into well-laid shoulders with visible forechest. Upper arm of sufficient length, placing the elbows correctly beneath the body. Straight, well-boned forelegs when viewed from front and side. Body well proportioned, with a level back and short, strong, well-muscled loin. Chest oval, enough depth, with good ground clearance and easily spannable. Hindquarters strong and muscular, with angulation balancing the front, well-bent stifles and low-set hocks. Tight feet, compact, with firm pads. Tail high set, thick at the base and carried correctly on the move, in balance with the dog. Coat of correct harsh texture and excellently presented. Moved extremely well, free, unrestricted and ground covering, with straight, coordinated action front and rear and good drive from behind. A quality exhibit with true breed character, excellent construction and no exaggeration. Pleased to award Dog CC. In the final comparison his overall balance, positive ground-covering action and strength of drive gave him the edge for Best of Breed. 

2nd: 2490 - All Jacks Clandestino (Imp Ita) (Ms A & Mr S Macdonald & Mackay)

Another quality White and Tan dog who closely follows the class winner in type and presence. I have judged this dog before and he is maturing well. Still showing excellent type and balance, with maturity and ring presence. Clean, well-proportioned head with keen eyes and ears correctly carried and mobile. Good mouth with scissor bite. Neck clean and of enough length, leading into well-placed shoulders. Forelegs straight with adequate bone and good feet. Body of correct length, level through the back, with strong loin. Chest of useful shape, oval and of sufficient depth, with reasonable ground clearance and able to be spanned. Hindquarters muscular with moderate angulation. Moved soundly and freely, covering the ground well. Tail well set and carried correctly on the move. Coat is harsh and well presented. A quality, mature dog who pushed the winner closely; today I preferred the winner’s greater overall balance and more positive, ground-covering movement.

A most likeable veteran, friendly and confident, clearly enjoying his day at almost 10 years of age. Active and alert throughout. Pleasing, masculine head displaying breed type housing a scissor bite. Nice overall shape with a straight front, spannable, oval chest and moved freely, maintaining a level back throughout. Active and alert the whole time.

1st: 2479 - Chadbrook Treacle at Lejamla (Mrs L & Mr A Galloway)

Lovely White and Tan bitch puppy who displays good overall breed type and balance even at this early stage of development. Head showing ideal proportions for age, flat skull, tapering neatly to a defined stop and well-developed foreface. Eyes dark, correctly shaped and set, giving that essential lively and intelligent expression. Ears are correctly placed and carried, framing her head nicely and adding to her charming puppy appeal. Excellent length of neck leading into well-laid shoulders, with developing forechest and straight forelegs. Chest is narrow however carrying just a little puppy weight today. Topline is correct and maintained on the move, and her tail is set and carriage is correct, adding to the overall picture of balance. Rear angulation is developing well with good bend to stifle and parallel hocks. Movement is free and active, with good reach and drive for her age. Coat is of correct texture. A well-constructed and feminine youngster.

2nd: 2494 – Twinan Ivanna (Miss C & Mrs T & Mr S McDonald)

Well-presented white and tan young bitch with a feminine, balanced outline. Pleasing head with dark eye and appealing expression; muzzle in proportion to skull and a complete scissor bite. Clean neck of sufficient length flowing into well-laid shoulders. Forechest developing, with straight forelegs and an overall body shape showing the desired slightly longer-than-high proportions. Chest narrow, oval and easily spanned. Level topline with tail well set and carried erect on the move. Hindquarters developing steadily, with bend to stifle and parallel hocks when viewed from behind. A balanced youngster with much to like; on the day I preferred the greater rear development and movement of the winner.

Class 1492 Jack Russell Terrier Junior Bitch (4 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 2502 - Locheil You Win My Love Forfarian (Miss N Sturrock)

Very feminine white and tan bitch who immediately appealed for her balance, breed type and lively expression. Attractive, well-proportioned head with a flat skull of moderate width, tapering gradually towards a strong muzzle. Dark, almond-shaped eyes gave a keen and intelligent expression, with sufficient definition through the stop. Ears well placed and carried close to the skull, a touch larger than my personal ideal. Clean, strong neck of pleasing length flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders. Forequarters well-constructed with straight forelegs and pleasing forechest development. Chest oval, of moderate depth and easily spanned. Body displayed the desired slightly longer-than-high proportions, with a level topline and strong loin. Hindquarters well developed, with balanced angulation, well-bent stifles and hocks set low. Tail high set and carried proudly erect on the move. She moved freely and purposefully with straight action, useful reach in front and drive from behind, maintaining her balance and outline throughout. Presented in excellent condition, lively, alert and full of character. A high-quality young bitch whose breed type, balance and purposeful movement carried her through to the Reserve Bitch Challenge Certificate.

2nd: 2492 - Locheil Party for Two (Mr S, Miss A & Mrs H Mackay, Macdonald & Turner)

Another feminine white and tan bitch with a pleasing head and well-proportioned muzzle and skull. I would prefer a darker eye and a little more of the lively, alert expression associated with the breed. Complete scissor bite. Straight forelegs with visible forechest and an oval chest that was easily spanned. Body proportions were pleasing, with balanced angulation through the hindquarters. Moved freely and steadily; today the winner had the advantage in eye, expression and the more alert, animated breed character.

Class 1493 Jack Russell Terrier Post Graduate Bitch (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 2480 - Navigareamor Platinum Posh at Lejamla (Mrs L & Mr A Galloway)

Feminine, well-presented white and tan bitch with pleasing overall type and balance. Excellent pigment, dark expressive eyes and well-placed ears framing an attractive head. I would prefer a little more definition through the stop to complete the head. Clean through the forequarters with straight forelegs and a pleasing front assembly. Body proportions balanced, with hindquarter angulation complementing the forehand. Movement was steady and coordinated.

Class 1494 Jack Russell Terrier Limit Bitch (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 2496 - Chandlimore Rainbow over Jaeva (Mr A & Mrs K Nagrecha & Tate)

Feminine white and tan bitch who immediately appealed for her lively character. Beautifully shaped head with pleasing skull-to-muzzle proportions and a well-defined stop. Eye of pleasing almond shape and size, although I would prefer it slightly darker. Ears well placed, carried close to the skull and of pleasing texture. Complete scissor bite. Clean neck flowing into well-laid shoulders, straight forelegs and visible forechest. Chest oval and easily spanned. Body showed the desired slightly longer-than-high proportions, leading into well-developed hindquarters with well-bent stifles and low-set hocks. Tail high set and carried erect on the move. Presented in pleasing coat. Moved freely with straight action front and rear, showing reach and drive while maintaining her outline. Lively, alert and full of character. Her freer, more positive action and lively breed character gave her the advantage in this class.

2nd: 2486 - Navigareamor Storm Gerrit (Mr M H & Col (r'td) S L E L Jackman & Jackman MBE Td)

Well-balanced white and tan feminine bitch presenting a pleasing outline. Attractive head with dark almond-shaped eyes, sufficient definition through the stop and a complete scissor bite. Ears of pleasing size and placement carried close to the skull. Clean neck leading into well-placed shoulders and a balanced front assembly, allowing useful reach on the move. Oval chest, easily spanned, with body proportions showing the desired slightly longer-than-high outline. Hindquarters muscular with sufficient bend of stifle and angulation complementing the forehand. Tail high set and carried erect when moving. Moved steadily out and back, although not with quite the freedom and positivity of the winner.

Class 1495 Jack Russell Terrier Open Bitch (3 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 2493 - Locheil Snow Queen (Mr S, Miss A & Mrs H Mackay, Macdonald & Turner)

I have judged this bitch previously and awarded her top honours; it was pleasing to see that she has matured further with time. Impressive white and tan bitch who presented a beautifully balanced, feminine outline. Strong, active and lithe, with the desired slightly longer-than-high proportions and depth of body in balance with length of foreleg. Head very pleasing, skull flat and of moderate width, tapering gradually towards a strong muzzle, with a well-defined stop. Dark almond-shaped eyes gave a keen, intelligent expression. Ears neat, well placed and carried close to the skull, enhancing her femininity. Complete scissor bite. Strong, clean neck of sufficient length flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders. Visible forechest with straight, well-boned forelegs. Chest oval, of moderate depth and easily spanned, with pleasing ribbing and sufficient ground clearance. Level topline with a short, strong loin leading into muscular hindquarters. Front and rear angulation were well balanced, with well-bent stifles and low-set hocks. Tail high set and carried proudly erect when moving. On the move she was unrestricted and free-striding, covering the ground with straight, coordinated action and plenty of drive from behind while retaining her outline. Coat of pleasing weatherproof texture and presented in excellent condition. A quality bitch displaying the balance, character and functionality I was looking for. Delighted to award her the Bitch Challenge Certificate, which I understand was her crowning CC, subject to Royal Kennel Club confirmation.

Class 1496 Jack Russell Terrier Veteran Bitch (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 2485 - Locheil Stop and Look via Navigareamor (Mr M H & Col (r'td) S L E L Jackman & Jackman MBE Td)

White and tan bitch with a dark almond-shaped eye and feminine expression. Muzzle longer than the slightly shorter stop-to-nose proportion called for in relation to stop-to-occiput. Particularly pleasing through the forequarters, with well-laid shoulders, visible forechest and straight forelegs giving a clean front assembly. Maintained a balanced outline standing. Moved freely enough in profile, although tending to move somewhat close behind.

2nd: 2475 - Ir/int Ch Saredon Miss Malone of Benzara Ir Jch Cw19 (Mrs S S Biggerstaff - Moore)

Feminine bitch of pleasing size, shape and overall balance. Attractive head and expression, although I would prefer greater definition through the stop. Body showed pleasing proportions with substance in keeping with height and balanced angulation front and rear. Presented a harmonious outline, but on the day, I preferred the winner through the forequarter construction.

Very lively and active bitch with plenty of character and strong muscle tone. More upstanding in outline than the winner and not displaying the same slightly longer-than-high proportions I was looking for. Nevertheless, she showed pleasing athleticism and moved freely with coordinated action and useful drive from behind. The winner’s more typical proportions and overall balance gave her the advantage.
