Thank you to Driffield society for inviting me to judge Golden Retriever Bitches at their Golden Anniversary Championship show. The new venue worked well with plenty of room, facilities and good parking. I had a very enjoyable day aided by two very good stewards. I wish I had more awards in some classes as was splitting hairs. The Puppy and Limit Class was especially full of quality, and I liked many bitches unplaced. I found no bad bites, but a couple of untypical heads. I was disappointed to still see some poorly presented feet, with nails not trimmed back enough or hair trimmed tidily. Well-trimmed feet do make a difference, not just aesthetically, but improve the dogs’ footfall and movement, plus strengthens pads and pasterns. I felt all my winners moved with drive and displayed good breed type.

1st Finnie Mr C & Mrs J THISTLEYHILL FOXGLOVE

Lovely puppy headed this class. Liked her type, correctly balanced throughout. Straight forelegs and hocks with tight feet with good bone. Angles were balanced and body short coupled with a level topline. Shown in nice gold coat and condition. Pretty head, enhanced by super pigment. Moved well with good drive, true and very sound.

2nd Crick Mrs L TOSELAND TILIA AT GOLDLYN

Larger framed, cream puppy that I felt would benefit from loosing a kilo or two. Stronger but appealing head, good pigment. Balanced shape, nicely built overall. Moved well.

9 years old in superb golden coat and condition, belaying her age. Lovely type. Pretty head on a stronger neck into well laid shoulders with corresponding upperarm. Correctly short coupled with a good spring of rib, displaying true balance. Well muscled thighs and standing solid on straight limbs. Topline and tailset level stood and when moving, which she did with good reach and drive.

2nd Smith Mr TB & Mrs LG SH CH GOLDMARKER LUMINARA

Another lovely bitch displaying super breed type. Quality all through. Loved her head and expression. Superb front construction. Good spring of rib and width of second thigh. Level topline. Moved with super reach and drive to power around the ring. Just preferred the balance of my winner.

Lovely pale coated puppy full of quality. Loved her pretty head and soft expression. Good length of neck into well constructed shoulders. Displays good balance throughout. Nice body proportions. Tight feet. Still lots of growing to do but its all there. Moved with superb reach and drive for one so young. Really liked her.

Another nice quality puppy that gave her handler a hard time, but her quality shone through. Pretty head, strong neck into well constructed shoulders. Good body proportions. Liked her width across her second thigh. Good bone and feet. Shown in profuse light gold coat. Moved soundly covering the ground with ease.

Wow, what a super quality puppy. Liked everything about her, from her pretty feminine head and pigment, right through to her correct movement. Shown in lovely paler coat, she is constructed correctly front and rear, is balanced and has all the hallmarks of going on to trouble the best. In super condition, she excels in correct catlike feet, good bone, strong neck, straight limbs, short coupled, good second thigh and correct weight. Handler doesn’t always stand her to advantage, but her quality is hard to hide. I’d happily take her home. Best Puppy bitch and BEST PUPPY IN BREED.

Was splitting hairs between my first two. Liked this girl for her super balance, breed type and movement. Pretty head and expression. Strong neck into good layback of shoulders. Well-ribbed and level topline and tailset that she kept on the move. Correct feet and balanced angles. Shown in a pretty paler coat. Moved soundly with good drive & footfall, pippin no. 2 on movement.

Loved the type of this girl. Prettiest head and expression. Nicely made throughout. Longer cast than 1. Dead level topline and correct tailset. Constructed well. Nice feet and in good coat and condition. Moved ok, just not holding her topline as well as 1.

Loved this girl since I first saw her as a puppy, she has not disappointed as she has grown into a quality girl. Showing superb balance throughout. Most prettiest of heads and nice eye. Strongly made neck into correctly angled shoulders. Good bone and nice feet. Dead level topline and tailset, which she kept on the move. Good body proportions. Perfect width across second thigh. Filled my eye from all angles. Shown not quite in full bloom, but enough to easily win this class. Her movement was a joy to watch, powering around the ring, there is no doubt she could do a days work! With a bit more maturity and a full coat she should gain her title. Considered her for RCC.

Another quality girl from this kennel. Pretty larger framed girl who is a nice shape. Good topline, bone, feet and coat. Not the forehand of my winner but her angles are balanced enabling her to move out with good reach and drive. Shown in nice condition and only just beating another lovely girl.

Super quality young girl. Really loved her. Well up on size, balanced construction and movement. Caught my eye on first glance and wasn’t disappointed on closer inspection. Well made throughout. Pretty head, lovely eye and expression. Strongly made shoulders on a good length of neck. Well off for bone and tight feet. Well ribbed and short coupled. Well-made rear with straight perfectly angled well let down stifles. Standing straight front and rear. Topline was dead level with tail set on correctly. Handled to advantage, free stood she just shouts quality. Moved with strong drive and correct reach, covering the ground with ease. Considered for RCC.

Pretties of girls with the most appealing head and expression. Especially liked her eye. Very feminine. Not shown in full bloom, but then nothing to hide. Balanced shape and angles. Nicely made all through. Level topline and tailset which she retained on the move.

Well-constructed girl in good overall condition. Not so keen on her head, she had many other super features. Good front angulation. Longer cast which caused her to dip in the back a bit when moving, but she moved soundly with good drive.

Perfectly balanced girl who I’ve done well before, I’m even more impressed now, as she has matured into a super example of the breed and in full bloom. Full of breed type & quality, she has the prettiest of heads, good pigment, strongly made throughout with perfect angles front and rear, balanced from every angle I viewed her. Correct bone and catlike feet. Limbs straight. Good spring of rib, short coupled. Topline and tailset level stood and on the move. She excels on the move, showing superb reach and drive and is truly animated, moving at one with her handler. So close to giving her the CC, but I know her day will come, she truly deserves her title. RCC.

A favourite of mine, loved her since a puppy and was honoured to judge her today. So many remarks apply the same as my winner, and am sure another day they’d change places. Loved everything about her. Today she was out moved but that was the only reason she was beaten, in superb company and winning over another favourite of mine.

Wow, I just loved this girl as a junior and fell for her then, my opinion hasn’t changed. She has matured into everything I’d hoped for, and today she was in full blood and it certainly was her day. She is full of quality. Is made strongly throughout. The prettiest head, leading into super length of neck into perfectly constructed shoulders, standing on straight forelegs, tight feet. Well ribbed, topline level and tail set on correctly. Well-bent stifles with good width of second thigh, hocks straight. Shown in full coat and condition. She powered around the ring showing her superb construction and quality. Was pleased to award her the CC and hope her title is not too far away. In the challenge my co-judge and I liked both CC winners so decided to let the referee Frank Kane decide, he chose the bitch.

Another girl out of the top drawer. Unlucky to come up against my winner in such good form. Nevertheless nothing can take away the fact this girl as of superb quality. Has all the essentials one would expect from a champion and many remarks of my winner also apply here. Loved her and she pushed hard for the RCC, just didn’t hold her topline as well as my RCC in the challenge, but still love her.
