I would like to thank the committee of Manchester Dog Show for appointing me to judge JRTs today and to all the exhibitors for giving me a fabulous entry of 48 exhibits making 57 entries with their precious dogs from near and far. As an exhibitor, I know it is always difficult to be given a place further down the line than you had hoped for; so my heartfelt thanks to those who accepted my decision with good grace. On the day, I judged your exhibits to the breed standard to the best of my ability giving everyone the same deference you deserve as an exhibitor. To my very capable stewards Mr Adrian and Mr Stephen Lowton-Humphries, thank you so much for keeping the paperwork on track.
Special Beginner Dog (1 entry, 0 absentees)
1st Latcham’s Jackpack Thru The Lens TAF
A 2 ½yr old white & tan rough coated male who needs to be turned out with better trimming and presentation. He has a flat skull, neat ears, almond shaped eye, correct dentition and has some potential ability to win in the future. He has a good outline, a level top-line and well bent stifles.
Minor Puppy Dog (4 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Turner & MacDonald’s Locheil Bad Habits
At 7 ½ months, this white & tan dog has a flat skull and a good ear set, good pigmentation and an alert expression with dark almond eyes. He has a correct front assembly, level top-line, good bend of stifle with well-let down hocks. On the move he covered the ground well and carried his lovely straight tail erect.
2nd Da Villi’s Spark Jack Calexico
Another puppy with excellent pigmentation and a correct almond dark eye. Although this puppy has lots of ring presence and is beautifully presented, he needs more angulation fore and aft. He is well boned and has the straightest of front legs, with the neatest of feet. He has a good pelt with excellent coat quality.
Puppy Dog (2 entries, 0 absentees)
1st Ryan’s Saredon Rumba
At almost a year old, this puppy has excellent pigmentation. Good width of flat skull, well set onto a good reach of neck into well-laid shoulders. Well boned with straight front legs and neat feet. He has a spannable rib, is short coupled, has moderate stifles with a tail carried well on the move. As always from this handler, his coat was turned out to perfection. Pleased to award him Best Puppy.
2nd Witmond’s Urananus Essence Of The Sun At Tiltser
Another beautifully presented exhibit, this 7-month-old puppy has a lovely flat skull and correct almond shaped eyes. He has a good length of neck into well laid shoulders but doesn’t have the angulation of my winner. He has a good harsh pelt, is level in top-line but and was not as fluid in movement on the day as my first place winner.
Junior Dog (4 entries, 0 absentees)
1st Jones’ Laserna Captain Crash
Looking at him, his presentation is very attractive. This one year old junior is predominantly white, spannable, with an excellent head; superb neat ears and flat level skull. He is level in top-line with a good set-on of tail. Would prefer more lay back of shoulder and more muscle-tone.
2nd Richardson & Wood’s Laserna's Imagine Dragons In Cooperland
Another 12 month old dog that was not as well trimmed, nor presented, as well as my winner. He has a level skull, neat ears, good chiselling, dark almond eye and a lovely straight front. I believe this youngster should have a very bright future as he is extremely well made, with a well-laid shoulder, a good return of upper arm and a balanced equally good stifle. For his future, please get him professionally groomed, as I believe he could go places.
Post Graduate Dog (5 entries, 4 absentees)
1st Latcham’s Jackpack Thru The Lens TAF
See Special Beginner Dog critic above.
Limit Dog (4 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Thornley & Smith’s Fast Love With Locheil ShCEx
This exhibit excels with his thick waterproof dense coat and loose pelt. He has good pigmentation, and neat ears, a flat skull and was presented well. He has a correct rib which is spannable and is short in loin. He is confident on the move, carrying his tail erect.
2nd Kay’s Blazingjacks Best Mate With Jackopeaks
A 4 year old white and tan dog that presents himself well on the move and standing. Although he is balanced angulation fore and aft, I would prefer more layback of shoulder and more stifle. He carried his level top-line well on the move; exhibiting a good length of stride. Presented and handled well.
Open Dog (3 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Sgura’s Totgree's Costantine
A balanced 4-year-old male who was very well presented and moved out with purpose and drive. I loved his head and expression, he has fabulous dark eyes, an alert expression, the neatest of ears that were correctly set on. He has an excellent shelf, good set on of tail, well-let down hocks and equally strong good bend of stifles which he used to advantage on the move. His coat is of good texture and presentation. He is a strong co-ordinated mover. I’ve seen him many times from the ringside and when I finally got to put my hands on him, he did not disappoint. I was extremely pleased to award him Best Dog.
2nd Ryan’s Saredon Modern Times
A 2-year-old male that moves out true fore and aft. His head is of correct proportions and is set on well to a good reach of neck. He is typical of the breed; balanced with a level top-line and is short in loin. Spannable, he was shown in a fabulous coarse coat and has moderate stifles, and a good tail set.
Veteran Dog (1 entry, 0 absentees)
1st Thornley & Smith’s Locheil Stop Right There VW
A 7½ yr-old veteran, with a short strong muzzle to length of skull, correct width of flat skull between neat well-set ears. Shown in an excellent harsh tricolour coat, he is a lean and well-muscled exhibit with excellent conformation fore and aft; as to be expected from his breeder/kennel. His well-muscled second thigh was used to advantage moving out powerfully and true, which also made it easy to award him Best Veteran.
Special Beginner Bitch (3 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Vaux’s Hunterhawk Burning Ember
2nd Fincham’s Lindcoly Princess Tiana
Two 6 month old bitches in this class; both did not perform well in this class today. My first place winner has adequate bone, correct dentition, an excellent dense coat but its tail had feathering and she wasn’t groomed to advantage. My second place was finer in bone and didn’t move as well as the winner. Both bitches had lovely dark pigmentation.
Minor Puppy Bitch (7 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Turner & MacDonald’s All Jacks Hip Hop (Imp) It
An 8-month old white/tan bitch with quite a mature body and an excellent harsh coat. She is well sprung in rib, balanced in depth to her forelegs. Level top-line, good bend of stifle and with balanced angulation she was true on the move.
2nd McDonald’s Twinan Ivanna With Donurie (NAF TAF)
Another 8 month old feminine bitch, with fabulous pigmentation. She has a flat skull, and a good ear set. Well off for bone, she has a straight front and neat feet, a level top-line, spannable, and in harsh coat. She has well let-down hocks and moved well.
Puppy Bitch (7 entries, 1 absentee)
1st MacKay, MacDonald & Turner’s Locheil Party For Two
A 10 month old feminine bitch with skull of correct proportions. She has a good upper arm and a well pronounced fore chest. Well sprung rib, level top-line, well set on tail carried correctly on the move. Well-let down hocks and straight back pasterns which she used to advantage on the move, with excellent drive. Shown and presented in correct harsh coat, I was pleased to award her Best Bitch Puppy.
2nd Sturrock’s Locheil You Win My Love Forfarian
It was interesting to learn my first and second places were litter sisters! Another quality bitch puppy with an alert and keen expression. She stood well behind herself on well-muscled quarters. Very similar to first, she has neat paws and a good bend of stifle. Another good mover but not as strong in movement as her sister today.
Junior Bitch (3 entries, 2 absentees)
1st Willemsen-Klaver’s Magic Vd Kluitenhoeve
The only one in this class but was my third place winner from puppy bitch. She is a quite attractive, predominantly white broken-coated bitch, requiring more angulation both fore and aft. Nevertheless, she moved quite well.
Post Graduate Bitch (7 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Jackmans’ Navigareamor Storm Gerrit
Another feminine 2 yr-old bitch with good pigmentation and an almond dark eye and correct dentition. She has excellent fore-quarters and well-laid shoulder, level top-line, loose pelt and correct tail set. Sadly, not in full coat today but won this class on movement.
2nd Hart’s Tiltser Cherry Blossom
Looking at her from in front, she is an impressive and alert feminine bitch. She has dark almond eyes, good pigmentation, a good width of chest and straight well boned forelegs with neat feet. Ideally, she requires more bend of stifle. On the move, she carried her tail erect. Presented and handled well.
Limit Bitch (2 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Kay’s Jackopeaks This Is Me
A 5-year-old smooth white and tan JRT. She has a balanced skull, a strong muzzle, correct dentition and lovely small ears. She has good angulation fore and aft, a level top-line and a beautiful straight tail which she carried correctly on the move. She is a well-muscled bitch with good boned straight forelegs. I would prefer her a little slimmer but a sound exhibit none-the-less.
Open Bitch (2 entries, 0 absentees)
1st Mackay, MacDonald & Turner’s Locheil Snow Queen
To me, this bitch represents the JRT and is made exactly as the breed standard describes. She is a 3-year-old bitch of correct size with a loose pelt and a quality coarse rough white coat with some tan markings. She exhibits a very feminine head, her skull has flat moderate width; a well-defined stop with her muzzle slightly shorter than her stop to occiput. She has a beautiful black button nose, dark almond eyes displaying an alert, friendly and keen countenance. She has well-laid shoulders that are balanced with a correct return of upper arm and she has straight forelegs with neat tight feet with firm pads. She has an oval correct rib that is spannable and her hind-quarters are equally balanced to her oh-so-well angulated front assembly!! On the move she carried her tail happily aloft and erect. Since she excels in angulation fore and aft, it was no surprise that she has excellent co-ordinated reach and drive. The deciding factor in giving her BOB against a quality international top-winning male was her exemplary visible fore-chest and spot-on return of upper arm. I simply love her. Her only fault….. she’s not mine.
2nd Spencer & Robert’s Gr Ch Slo Ch It Ch & Int Ch Jackandfish Shady Lady
A quality 4-year-old bitch, again of correct size with a loose pelt but not in as full rough coat as my winner. Another very feminine flat skull with good width and correct chiselling. Very good pigmentation and correct dark almond eye. Correct well-laid shoulders and front assembly with straight forelegs and neat tight feet. Correct spannable oval rib and level top-line, short in loin. Would prefer a little more bend of stifle. Another happy, correct and co-ordinated mover. Lots to like about this bitch and she was very unfortunate to come up against my first place winner today. Nevertheless, I was very pleased to award her Reserve Best Bitch.
Veteran Bitch (2 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Jackman’s Locheil Stop And Look Via Navigareamor
Only one in this class today but she did not disappoint. She is a typical JRT, with a correctly shaped skull with dark almond eye, alert expression and dark pigment. She has good straight front legs, is moderately angled front and rear and moves correctly. She is a litter sister to my veteran dog winner; who won Best Veteran overall on his fitness and muscle tone.
