As is customary at this point: My gratitude to the officers and committee of the SE PMDC for the invitation to judge their championship show this year. Special thanks to my steward Rachel who stepped into the role at short notice. Hospitality was excellent and I was well fed. This year due to the promise of unsettled weather the show was convened inside the hall. It looked a little packed, from inside the ring, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Photos of the main winners and class placings are on the clubs website. Thanks to all the exhibitors for trusting me with their wonderful dogs. Congratulations to all.
I am writing these notes with sadness as we learned that that on the 13th April we lost Dave Lock. Dave was a real gentlemen and a great supporter of our breed and clubs. I am sure anyone who met him has fond memories. For me, the first time I met Dave was early in 1981 and my first introduction to someone else with Pyris. He even took Rudi and me to our first show, at Manchester Belle Vue, with him and his own lad, Barker. Very sadly missed.
Quality and type was somewhat varied. There’s a good number of imports. For a breed that has seen declining numbers consistently since the early 1970s we need to access the genetic diversity they offer to maintain breed health. I was very happy with my main winners. Hocks and rear movement are not always as strong as I would wish for and collectively we still need to watch for width in the front quarters too. All dogs were complete and double dews evidenced by all entrants.
Minor Puppy Dog (1/0): 1. Kennedy’s Gillandant Harvest Night at Pyrcot, 7mths – Well-made young lad who presents a pleasing outline. Medium angulation fore and aft Masculine head with dark eyes and pigment. Tight lips. Small feet and upright pasterns. Stood alone but was deserving of his first place and later BPIS.
Puppy Dog (1/0): As MPD.
Junior Dog (0/0). Maiden Dog (1/1). Novice Dog (1/1).
Under Graduate Dog (1/0): Wells’ Nerin De Alba De Los Danzantes (Imp ESP), 2yrs 10mths. Tall masculine dog in full coat. Beautiful colours abound, wolf-grey to his head and tan to his sides and croup. Harsh texture. Whilst a little light of eye his overall pigment is sound. Rear assembly and rear movement not as strong as I would have liked. However the front is much more pleasing with strong short neck running into good lay of shoulder formed from excellent length of upper arm providing a pleasing fore-chest. Overall an impressive male of good size and substance.
Graduate Dog (1/0): As UGD.
Post Graduate Dog (2/0): 1. Waters’ Estom Patou Von Traumberg (Imp CZE) ), 2yrs 1mths. A wonderful young lad, tall and elegant, all white. Athletic in shape with a level topline, nice tuck up, short loin all go to make a pleasing outline that is in proportion. Pleasing head in proportion to his overall size. Gentle expression, pincer bite, dark pigmentation, good ear set, smiling eyes. A little straight through on the hock. Shepherds crook to the tail coiled around my fingers as I went over. As pleasing as he already is this lad has more development to come to achieve his full promise. 2. Bhattacharya’s Jumicar Free As A Bird of Hydelen. 1yr 5mths – Another very promising youngster, tall deep chested, tight tuck-up, level top line, short loin, rounded croup. Very pleasing on the eye. Excellent pigmentation. Good amount of bone. Moved out strongly and freely. Sired by my RBD. On any other day would have likely taken first but I had a preference for the head of my first choice.
Limit Dog (5/1): 1. Chang’s Oonelladream Born to Run, 2yrs 9mths – A medium sized lad, all white good dense coat. Another dog with pleasing front assembly, a good length of upper arm providing fore-chest and lay of shoulder. Short neck. Good angles to the rear. Head is strong and in proportion Pleasing movement going and coming. Serious contender for RBD. 2. Munson’s Travis Bear du Pyrdanti for Pyrbern (Imp FRA) , 3yrs Another imposing and masculine dog of good size and substance. Tan markings adorn his collar flank and croup. His coat is harsh long and dense. Head strong but a little looser than my preference. A little cow hocked when running which made for an inefficient movement compared to my first. 3. Kennedy’s Pyrcot Spirit of Hanai, 4yrs - Medium sized, all white. Dark amber eyes. Good short loin, tuck up and level topline. Good width of chest but lacking the length of upper arm I want to see.
Open Dog (4/2): 1. Baverstock’s Ch. Kalkasi Just Because JW ShCEx OSW, 4yrs – Medium sized boy, excellent presented and excellently handled. Didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the day. Harsh dense white coat. Strong masculine head atop a short strong neck running into a level topline and rounded croup. Deep chest with good spring of rib connect the hind quarters through a short coupling. Well-proportioned throughout. Good width of chest. Pleasing angles to the fore, upper arm and shoulder set. Good turn of stifle and straight hocks. Well-muscled and covered the ground with ease. A dog in his prime and pleased to award DCC & BIS. 2.Wilcock’s Dream of Valyria Daemon of Mystic Elysium (Imp POL), 3yrs – very different type to my first. Pristine white coat, short and harsh. Asymmetrical head markings and speckled foreleg markings add to his charm. Head strong with good pigment. Lips could be a little tighter. He is tall and masculine. Deep chested, tight tuck up and short coupled. Level top line runs smoothly into a rounded croup. Tight cat feet. RDCC and RBIS.
Veteran Dog (4/0): Three grand old men and my honour to experience. Cubello’s Night Owl, 9yrs – No sign of age on this dog. Not the largest but meets the standard. Demonstrates a very well-proportioned profile, it all fits together very well. Strong boned, dark pigment, tight lips. Moved well. BVD 2. Thomas’ Shiresoak Snow Patrol, 10yrs – Good sized male in good condition. Medium head with dark pigmentation and good tight lips too. Good length to body without being excessive. Good angles fore and aft. Age just starting to tell as he was a little soft on the rear today. 3. Duffell’s Ricaduffal Draco Star, 9yrs – Good sized male. Beautiful dark grey markings and pigmentation. Stockier in build as evidenced by his deep chest, short coupled and tight tuck up. Solid bone. Preferred the bone structure of the heads on 1 and 2.
Minor Puppy Bitch (0/0). Puppy Bitch (2/1): 1. Baverstock’s Kalkasi Eternal Quest, 11mths – A feminine young lady with the sweetest smile. Dark almond shaped eyes and lips. Smooth skull and good ear set. In good coat with blaireau marking to the head and ears. Good amount of bone whilst retaining her femininity. Quite tall for her age. Good turn of stifle but would like a little more point of hock. Excellent movement going freely and unhurried. Very promising indeed. Will look forward to seeing her progress in the ring.
Junior Bitch (2/0):1. Waters’ Reina De Alba Los Danzantes with Sketrick (Imp ESP), 14months – This girl just pushed all my buttons. Loved her type: tall, athletic, elegant. Beautiful smooth skull in correct proportion to her physique. Dark amber, almond shaped eyes, black close-fitting lips. This is the “Pyreenie expression” so essential for breed type. All white coat, harsh, dense but not overly long. Good length of foreleg with adequate upper arm and good shoulder set. Level topline running to a rounded croup with good tail set that reaches easily to her hocks. Deep chest and tight tuck up and short-coupling connect the strong rear quarters. Pleased with her rear angulation and turn of stifle running down to point of hock. Hocks, tall and upright. Compact cat like feet. Stunning in profile. Surprised myself when I realised she is just 14 months old. No hesitation in awarding her several firsts followed by BCC and BOS. Another who should have a great future. 2. Baverstock’s Kalkasi Eternal Quest. Unlucky to meet 1 today and no discredit to her own qualities.
Maiden Bitch (0/0). Novice Bitch (1/0): 1. Waters’ Reina De Alba Los Danzantes with Sketrick (Imp ESP). Under Graduate Bitch (1/0): 1. Waters’ Reina De Alba Los Danzantes with Sketrick (Imp ESP). Graduate Bitch (1/0): 1. Waters’ Reina De Alba Los Danzantes with Sketrick (Imp ESP).
Post Graduate Bitch (3/1): 1. Tadd’s Chia Apaltasunez avec Kricarno (Imp CZE), 20mths – tall girl with much to admire. Presents well in profile with the correct amount of bone for her height. Skull is smooth with darkest of pigmentation . Eyes dark amber, tight and almond shaped. Good length of muzzle and scissor bite. Coat is good texture, dense and of the shorter length. Shoulders strong with short neck set well on. Slightly longer in the body but all is in balance. A little untidy on rear movement today. Smashing length to tail with that shepherds crook. Attractive young lady. 2.Cox’s Auvandill Freya’s Heidi, 4yrs – all white girl of good size. Not the head and profile of my 1st. Good size, adequate bone. All white coat. Eyes dark a little rounded giving her a somewhat doleful expression. Eye rims and lips all dark pigmented as required. Good length of upper arm and shoulder.
Limit Bitch (3/1): 1. Coles’ Gillandant Jasmine, 3yrs – Very showy and attractive lady. All white with blaireau to ears and sides of her skull Longer coat than most here today, in beautiful condition and so well groomed. Overall she presents as a heavier type. Front strong and well angled upper arm and shoulder. Short strong neck. Deep chest and short coupled. Level topline beneath that profuse coat. Good rear angulation, excellent muscle tone. 2. Cox’s Auvandill Freya’s Heidi. As for PG.
Open Bitch (3/0):Interesting class of three different types. 1. Harris’ Febus Hardknott, 4yrs – beautifully presented and in her prime. Her smooth skull sits on a strong short neck. Whilst very pretty her eyes are a little more round than I would prefer which makes her expression a little sad. Pigmentation is dark. Lips tight and close fitting. Overall of medium size and of strong bone. Solid front matched to well angled rear quarters. Point of hock and upright hocks just as I like to see them. Tight shepherds crook to her tail. Moved out well. Well deserving of RBCC. 2.Meakin’s Angelrain Avante Aurora (AI), 5yrs – Tallest girl in this class by some margin. Lovely head and expression. Beautiful dark eyes set off a beautiful smile. Ears correctly set and folded back as she was enjoying herself. Coat was a little uneven today and carrying a little too much timber. But solidly made and well-muscled. Strong front angulation. In profile she stands a little taller than long. Good point of hock. 3. Baverstock’s Kalkasi Star Of The Stage JW, 4yrs – Medium sized girl who presents a clean outline. Head is strong/powerful and reminds me much of a certain imported male in her lineage that I found very admirable some years ago. Coat is of shorter type and even throughout. Well boned for her size without being overdone. Upper arm is a little upright. Moves easily around the ring. Well handled.
Veteran Bitch (1/0): 1. Wilcock’s Ch. Penellcy She’s Like The Wind, 7yrs – Medium sized and all white mature lady. Strongly made with a straight front, pleasing length to upper arm creating fore-chest I like to see. Short strong neck. Level topline. Coat clean and tidy with an even jacket. Upright hocks and point of hock on display. Her gait was free and seemingly without effort. Should continue to do very do well as a veteran for some time. BVB, BV
