Working & Pastoral Breeds Association Of Wales

Breed: Newfoundland

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the secretary and committee for their kind invitation to judge at this show. It was a genuine privilege to award my first set of CCs in my own breed, which is very close to my heart. Overall, I was presented with some beautiful dogs, all in immaculate condition. In several classes, I was faced with some particularly difficult decisions, especially in the bitch classes, where the quality was exceptionally strong, notably in a star-studded Open Bitch class. I am also grateful to the exhibitors for their support and for accepting my decisions so graciously; it was very much appreciated.

Newfoundland Veteran (4 entries / 2 Absent)

Wow what a class to start the day with, 2 exemplars of the breed.

1st Adairs - Ch King of Helluland Love Actually at Darebear (IMP) JW ShCM ShCEx VW

An absolutely stunning girl of 9 years, for me everything I look for in a Newfoundland. She is of excellent breed type, extremely well balanced and compact, with substantial bone throughout. Her construction is second to none, with strong neck, well set on her well laid-back shoulders. Broad, strong, and muscular back with deep chest and well sprung ribs. She has the most beautiful of heads with small dark eyes giving the most beautiful expression that I so love in this breed, broad square muzzle which is clean cut with correct depth to length proportions. She is certainly fit for purpose, powerful and muscular rear which powered her around the ring. Correct coat which was beautifully presented. An absolute pleasure to judge and a credit to her owners, was a clear contender for top honours just dropped her sparkle in the challenge and had to give way to the youngsters

2nd Coldwells - Ch/JSY Ch Zentaur This is Jam Hot (AI) JW ShCEx OSW

Another stunning girl brown of 7 years, who certainly denies her age. She is a beautifully made bitch of good size, showing strength and substance. In profile she is a picture, nothing exaggerated and everything fitting into place perfectly. Excellent angulation both front and read. Hands on she is a pleasure to go over and excels on the move. Pulled my heart strings deciding between these two as I love them both but just preferred the head on 1st. Presented and handled to get the best out of her, she too is a credit to you.

Newfoundland Puppy Dog (3 entries / 0 absent)

1st Leechs – Woudbear Truly Madly Deeply Mileoak (IMP NLD)

Black boy of nearly 12 months, of substantial size with large bone throughout. Lovely head with correct ratios, dark almond shaped eyes giving a beautiful expression. His neck is strong, well set on his shoulders with straight forequarters. His body is of correct length with strong powerful hindquarters which he used on the move. At first, I thought he was a little unbalanced on the move, but he was changing coats which distracted the eye, a dog you need to get your hands on to fully appreciate. BPIB and delighted to see him win PG4 in a lovely line up.

2nd Duffs - Titanbears Primatus

Just a baby of 7 months and giving so much away in this class to the older male, but so much to like. In profile he presents a lovely picture, just the right amount of everything in the right place. Nice head with good proportions, clean cut, square muzzle and dark eye. Good neck on well placed shoulders. Held his topline well on the move. Needs time to mature.

3rd Davies – Titanbears Majestic

Newfoundland Junior Dog (3 entries / 0 absent)

1st – Boltons – Sandbears Chef O’oeurve

This boy came into the ring and instantly caught my eye; at 18 months he is still quite raw but just so much to like about him. He is of excellent size and type with the most beautiful of heads and expressions, with lovely dark eye. His neck is powerful and strong. Excellent front with well laid-back shoulders. Powerful hindquarters which he used well on the move showing excellent reach and drive. I liked this youngster; he could do with more ring craft to get the absolute best out of him but had everything there to win the class for me. The true emotion of his handler made my day today. Learnt from the catalogue afterwards he was sired by my CC winner – clearly stamping his type !

2nd – Burtons – Vodahond Arlo

Impressive male of nearly 18 months. Masculine head with good colour and shape and excellent pigment. String neck with good lay of shoulder, straight front and depth of chest. Level topline which he held on the move. Moved well.

3rd – Plants – Green Pearl Versailles (IMP FRA)

Newfoundland Novice Dog (3 entries / 1 withdrawn)

1st Leechs – Woudbear Truly Madly Deeply Mileoak (IMP NLD)

As puppy dog

2nd – Plants – Green Pearl Versailles (IMP FRA)

Strong and well-built male of 16 months, a little unsettled today and not giving his all. Impressive size and substance, with massive bone throughout. Lovely coat. Good mouth and dark eye. To be super critical his head is a little overdone for me.

Newfoundland Post Graduate (2 entries / 0 absent)

1st Moore & James – Starnewf Mr Dark Sky JW

An honest black boy of nearly 2 years, of good size and shape. Nice head shape and proportions with dark eye and clean-cut muzzle. Good length of neck into well angulated front. Good angulation with string hocks and firm pasterns. Moved well with good reach and drive, holding his topline well on the move. Presented in lovely coat and handled to get the best out of him.

2nd Paynes - Bearhugs Rockefeller at Squestpaws

Nicely marked white / black boy of nearly 2 years, giving his mum some fun today. He is a large male, who impresses with size, although would prefer a little more bone to match his frame. Nice masculine head and expression. Looked well in profile with well ribbed body and deep chest, good angulation with straight front. Held his topline well on the move.

Newfoundland Limit Dog (6 entries / 1 absent)

1st Sheridans – Two Rivers Wise Choice at Colnbear (IMP USA) BEL JCH

Only a young dog of 20 months, out of the top drawer. Well balanced and compact with substantial bone throughout. Broad head with broad muzzle of correct proportions and no excessive wrinkle. Small almond shaped eyes giving the gentlest of expressions. Excellent mouth. Strong neck, well set on shoulders, excellent forequarters with close fitting elbows. Strong powerful hindquarters which he used well to drive around the ring. Beautiful coat presented to the highest of standards and presented to get the absolute best out of him, unfortunately tends to carry his tail too high which spoils his picture on the move.

2nd Austins – Davistell Springsteen of Elbar JW ShCEx OSW

Another lovely black of nearly 3 years old, a dog I have often admired from the ringside. He excels in breed type and is not exaggerated in any way. He is of lovely size and shape and looks a picture in profile presenting a lovely shape, well balanced, with good bone throughout. Strong well muscular neck set well on his shoulders. Good compact body with level topline. This boy excels in movement, he is true both fore and aft, holding his topline at all times on the move. Presented in lovely condition and handled to get the best out of him, was splitting hairs between them but preferred the head on 1st. A quality dog and a credit to his owners.

3rd Duffs – Titanbears Excommunicado JW IR JCH ShCEx OSW

Newfoundland Open Dog (5 entries / 0 absent)

1st Blakes – Ch Sandbears Masterpiece

Black dog of nearly 6 years, straight out of the top drawer. He just impresses as soon as he walks in the ring. He is extremely well balanced and compact with correct proportions throughout. He has the most beautiful of heads, with broad muzzle and clean cut without any excessive wrinkle and small dark eyes. His neck is strong and well set onto his well laid back, muscled shoulders with tight fitting elbows. His body is compact and carries a firm, level topline which he holds on the move. Deep, broad chest, well sprung ribs and excellent depth to brisket. Free and easy movement, demonstrating his excellent reach and powerful hindquarters allowing him to drive effortlessly round the ring. His coat was of the highest standards, presented to get the absolute best out of him. Hands on this dog has so much more to appreciate. Handled to perfection to get the very best out of him. My pleasure to award him the CC & BOB and watch him shortlisted in a very strong group.

2nd Chapmans – Ch Nandobears You’ll Never Walk Alone (IMP DEU)

Another lovely male of nearly 4 years. Another out of the top drawer, and one to get your hands on to truly appreciate his qualities. He is of lovely size and shape and presents a lovely picture in both profile and on the move. Lovey shaped head with correct ratios, darkest of eyes giving the most beautiful of expressions. Lovely neck leading to excellent front with well laid-back shoulder and deep broad chest. His ribs are well sprung with good depth of brisket. Really impressive male who pushed 1st all the way. Effortless movement, so free and easy. Presented and handled to get the very best out of him. RCC

3rd Hosies – LUX Ch King of Helluland Jungle Book at Shadowrise (IMP SVK)

Newfoundland Puppy Bitch (0 entries)

Junior Bitch (1 entries / 0 Absent)

1st Hosies – Shadowrise Smash’N Grab JW

Most beautiful girl of 16 months, who immediately caught my attention the second she walked in the ring. She is of excellent breed type, extremely well balanced throughout. Her construction is text book, presenting a picture I would be happy to look at all day. Excellent bone whilst fully maintaining her femineity, strong neck, well set on her well laid-back shoulders. Broad, strong, and muscular back with deep chest and well sprung ribs. Lovely head and expression with small dark eyes and correct depth to length proportions. For me this girl comes alive on the move confirming her soundness, her movement is absolutely effortless, she is certainly fit for purpose, powerful and muscular rear which powered her around the ring. Whilst she may have left some of her coat at home today, she didn’t need to hide anything – it’s all there. Presented and handled to get the absolute best out of her, she is a credit to her owners. Constantly drew me back to her for the challenge, more than happy to award her the RCC in a wonderful line up of top-quality bitches.

Newfoundland Novice Bitch (2 entries / 0 Absent)

1st Webb & Harrisons – Green Pearl Very Taylor Made for Barracechi (IMP FRA)

Black girl of 16 months. So much to like about her, although giving her handler a bit of a hard time with her over enthusiasm. In profile she presents a lovely picture, with correct proportions. She is of good size with plenty of bone throughout. Lovely head and expression with dark eye and tight eyelids. Excellent front and rear angulation. Moved well, even if full of herself.

2nd Peterstones – Starnewf Little Twinkle

Black girl of nearly 2 years. Different type to 1st and unfortunately left her coat at home today which did distract from the overall picture. She is an ultra-feminine girl, who presents a lovely profile, would just prefer more of her all round. Moved well, holding her topline on the move. Handled sympathetically to get the very best out of her.

Newfoundland Post Graduate Bitch (1 entry / 0 Absent)

1st Groves – Newgraden Hope and Glory for Bridgestone JW

Brown girl of 2 years, out of the top drawer. She definitely has something about her that draws you in and I feel she will be star in the making with maturity; there is so much to like about her. She is of good size and shape with excellent bone throughout. She has the most beautiful head with correct eye colour. Excellent front with correct angulations. Strong back carrying her topline perfectly on the move which was sound and effortless from all angles. Beautifully presented and handled to get the best out of her.

Newfoundland Limit Bitch (6 entries / 1 absent)

1st Webbs -Green Pearl Uniquely Barracechi (IMP FRA) JW

Black girl of nearly 3 years, so much to like about her. My notes start with loved her. In profile she presents a lovely picture, with excellent bone throughout but not overdone in any way, retaining her femininity. She excels in breed, type, well balanced and compact. Lovely head with broad muzzle of correct proportions giving the gentlest of expressions. Strong neck, well set on shoulders, excellent front and lay back of shoulder. On the move she excels in reach and drive and is a pleasure to watch. Definite contender for top honours and held her own in a strong final line up. Presented beautifully.

2nd Hietscholds – Davistell Babee Love at Chrishelkate (AI)

Another lovely girl, with so much to loke about her. Unfortunately, she left her coat at home today which would have fully completed the picture. Hands on she is a pleasure to go over with fabulous construction which was demonstrated in her effortless free flowing movement. She will be one to watch in the future as she fully matures. Handled to get the best out of her.

3rd – Adairs – Chateaunewf Make My Day for Darebear

Newfoundland Open Bitch (11 entries / 2 absent)

1st Baldocks – CH / LUX / BEL / INT Ch Ohio’s About Damn Time (IMP NOR)

A very impressive black girl who topped this class of magnificent bitches. At nearly 4 years she really is stunning and caught my attention on her first run round just on her balance and soundness. Hands on she did not disappoint, her head is beautiful with lovely dark and correctly shaped eyes, clean muzzle with correct width and depth. She is powerfully made with strong bone and good feet. Good neck which she uses to her advantage. Well ribbed with strong back, holding her topline beautifully on the move. Deep broad chest and ribs extending well back into powerful, strong loin. On the move she is effortless with good drive and an easy reach. Shown in top class condition to win this lovely class, an absolute pleasure to go over. My CC winner.

2nd Richards – Twillin Gate Voulez Vous Sheridel (IMP BEL)

This girl stole a piece of my heart today, the more I looked at her the more I fell in love with her. So unfortunate to meet 1st today, called back in for the RCC today but could easily change places on another day. She is of lovely size and shape, an excellent example of breed type. She has a lovely head with dark eye and the sweetest gentle expression. Good front with well laid-back shoulders, well balanced muscular body with firm topline which she held on the move. Powerful hindquarters which she used well showing excellent reach and drive.
