WEST OF ENGLAND LADIES’ KENNEL SOCIETY

26th April 2026

My thanks to the Officers & Committee of WELKS for their invitation to judge their Working Group. It was a lovely day, with the sun shining in the Malvern Hills. The first outside Championship show of the year and the rain dance had worked. Also, thanks to the Breed Judges for sending through some excellent dogs to make my job harder. Many of these dogs I have judged before in their breeds and have done well. It was a very strong group. I was like a kid in a candy shop!

I also shortlisted the Bullmastiff, Aston & Aston & Pavesi’s Ch Angel’s Phoenix Ron Weasley Astonpride JW (Imp Ita), the German Pinscher Ellis’s Falkor Stand and Deliver & the Great Dane Chappell’s Ch Selmalda Jealous Guy (ai).

Group 1 - Ms S Blake - Ch Sandbears Masterpiece, Breed: Newfoundland, 5 yr old black, I have judged this male before, and he is maturing like a fine wine. Super head piece, with well-shaped skull, lovely eye & expression, square muzzle with good width of jaw, well developed neck, going into correct shoulders, super ribbing & loin, lovely rear with good turn of stifle, in super coat and condition, pulled all the stops out today to take top place, no longer the bridesmaid, now the groom!

Group 2 - Misses L & S Mair - Ch Macbarra Kickin Up A Storm at Glenauld JW, Breed: Brindle & White Boxer of 4 yrs old, loved this dog last time I judged the breed and he didn’t disappoint today, on his toes the whole time, superb head with clean eye, good jaw line, strong neck, super parallel front & rear, so well balanced, made the most of the big ring on the move. Pushed the Newfie hard for the Group but had to settle for 2nd today.

Group 3 - Williams & Newton’s Ch Rarjo Captain Curl Macduff JW, Breed: Portuguese Water Dog, black curly male of 2 yrs old. This boy is so well balanced, from every angle, has the correct head proportions, with correct eye shape & expression, good muzzle & jaw, strong neck, going into well angulated shoulders, correct width on front, parallel front & rear, well ribbed with short loin, again, made the most of the big ring.

Group 4 - Deegan & Grainger’s Ch Chandlimore Boys Night in, Breed: St Bernard. This 3 year old male has got the substance and size desired in the breed. His head is well balanced with his body, with good skull, and stop. Has correct muzzle and bite, he has clean eyes and good expression. Strong neck going into a powerful body with good angles, he has a parallel front and rear, with strong limbs. He powered round the ring. Finished a super line up of dogs.
