Rhodesian Ridgeback
Thank you to Boston for the invitation to judge Rhodesian Ridgebacks for the first time, a breed I really love to judge. Temperament and overall condition of the exhibits was very good throughout and I was extremely pleased with my main winners.
Minor Puppy Dog (3,0)
1. Catharell’s Kinabula’s Master Of Joy. A moderate, yet upstanding puppy. Scores for size and proportions. Really liked his eye and expression, and his head was balanced in terms of length, but I would prefer him a touch deeper in muzzle. Strong neck into a well angulated front. Quite raw in the body but plenty time on his side. Would prefer more hind angulation for ideal balance, and can settle into his hindquarters on the move. Has a lovely carriage on the move where he covers the ground with an active and easy stride.
2. Nossa’s Kinabula’s Captain Pugwash. Litter brother and a little more of him all through. Very masculine with strong bone and substance. Handsome, well balanced head with fairly defined stop and dark pigment. Long neck of super strength, excellent layback of shoulder and return of upper arm, lovely neat elbows. Super bone and feet. Well developed for age in terms of depth and infill, would prefer him shorter in the loin. He too could have a little more rear angulation, though he has super width of first and second thigh. A sound mover, just not as collected or the carriage of 1.
3. Ashman’s Jolihem Shumba for Kitaarka.
Puppy Dog (2,0)
1. Whitney’s Voorlooper Raadi Mosi. A good sized male who presents a clean and flowing outline, though he is as long as I’d like for proportions. Thought he had a super head and expression with dark eyes. Clean neck of good length. Smooth and well laid shoulders, upper arm of good length. Needs to fill out in forechest as a touch narrow in front at present. Pleasing top and underline. Balanced rear and strong hocks. Correct ridge of good length and in super overall condition. Needs to focus on the job more but moved fairly well with good drive from the rear.
2. Farleigh’s Kinabula’s Milky Bar Kid. Super proportions and balance on this young dog, and a good size too. Would prefer better balance between skull and muzzle, and he could be a little cleaner in the throat. Well set and sized ears. Strong neck of good length. Excellent front construction, with good infill for age. Lovely bone, pasterns and feet. Can firm up a little in topline but is well ribbed. Smooth over the croup with a well set tail. Super strength to his balanced rear, liked his well let down hocks. Very impressive on the move when viewed from the side, his stride is long and so very easy, just needs to tighten up coming towards. Close decision.
Junior Dog (1,0)
1. Whitney’s Voorlooper Raadi Mosi.
Post Graduate Dog (1,0)
1. Catharell’s Kinabula’s Making Magick for Faahac JW. I believe this is the third time I have judged this male and it is pleasing to see how well he is developing into his well proportioned, moderate and balanced frame, and he still has a little to go. Attractive head with lovely eye and expression. Strong neck set smoothly into shoulder, with enough upper arm. Sound bone and feet. Still has a little finishing off to do in his body but pleasing for depth and length of ribbing. Well muscled, short loin. Moderate rear angulation and excellent muscle tone. Would prefer a longer tail and carried a little fondly at times. He has a very light and active gait with super carriage. Lovely temperament.
Limit Dog (5,0)
1. Dennis’ Priorpark Pragmatist. An upstanding male of good size with a flowing outline. Wouldn’t like him any shorter for proportions but still maintains good overall balance. Handsome head with good length and strength, ears well set but wouldn’t like them any bigger. Long, clean neck set into super front angulation. Has some spring to pastern and compact feet. Holds a firm topline standing and moving. Pleasing hindquarters with width to thighs and strong hocks. A very easy mover covering a fair amount of ground.
2. Hicks’ Nuthouse Mastermind. A well proportioned and balanced dog, another good for size. Perhaps not as clean in outline as 1. Super proportions to his head, with bright round eyes. Correct ears. Totally balanced in angulation fore and aft. Could be more consistent in topline stacked, but does firm up on the move. Would like more strength in rear standing and moving, but has an easy and balanced stride in profile.
3. Collier & Cox’s Carlincox Knock Ya Socks Off.
Open Dog (8,0)
1. Barnes’ Ch Diamondridge Dreadnought JW. No stranger to me having judged him at a couple of open shows, he gets better and better. For me, he sums up the general appearance in the standard so well; handsome, upstanding, strong, active and symmetrical in outline. He may be well up to size but he is so well proportioned and balanced, with a clean and flowing outline. Masculine head, and whilst I wouldn’t like it any stronger, it is well balanced in terms of width and length. Dark eyes and bright expression. Long neck set beautifully into well laid shoulders. His whole front is very pleasing with excellent return of upper arm and tight elbows tucked well under the body, strong bone and stands on compact feet. Ideal fill of forechest and super length of ribcage. His rear is so well balanced and he particularly pleased for width of first and second thigh. Long symmetrical ridge and in excellent overall condition. So impressive on the move, lots of drive from the rear and an upstanding carriage about him which sets him apart. Moving with pleasing width up and down and with such a lengthy and easy stride in profile, maintaining his outline. DCC.
2. Kirby & Mansfield’s Ch Shingwidsi Tsholo Light. Quite different to 1 but lots of qualities. A very good sized male with excellent proportions and a moderate balance about him. Masculine head, flat skull free from wrinkle, though I wouldn’t like any more strength in the skull for balance. Lovely eye and expression. Super ear size and set. Strong neck. Fairly well angulated fore and aft. Firm topline. Has spring to pastern and compact feet with well arched toes. Could have slightly more depth. Firm topline. Balanced, well angulated rear. Really loved him on the move, so sound and clean moving up and down and has a long and supple stride in profile. His action is so light and he has a lovely carriage on the move always holding his outline. RDCC.
3. Pearce’s Ch Kinyemi Song Of Serengeti Sepiwi Sekayi for Msingi (Imp) JW.
Special Beginners Dog (2,0)
1. Thomas-Bassett’s Fiadma’s Stiggens at Skyleridge. A well proportioned and balanced dog, though he could have a bit more flow to his outline. Masculine head with correct eye and expression. Wouldn’t like his ears any bigger. Strong neck and super angulation in shoulder and upper arm. Well filled forechest. Would like a touch more spring of pastern, excellent feet. Super depth and length of ribbing. Moderate rear with enough strength. A sound mover with good drive from the rear.
2. Pitcon & Ince’s Priorpark Point And Click JW. Handsome liver nose with good pigment and bright eyes. Long neck with a lovely flow into shoulder, not quite the upper arm of 1. Excellent bone, pasterns and feet. Good depth and spring of rib. Strong loin. Falls away a little over the croup spoiling his topline. Well angulated rear with well let down hocks. Not as accurate on the move as 1.
Minor Puppy Bitch (3,0)
1. Taylor’s Salome’s Charm Truly Arte Cassari at Tokwe (Imp). Really attractive and feminine puppy. Absolutely spot on for size, proportions and balance. She has a clean and firm outline and rightly, just needs a little more time to fill her lovely frame. Feminine head of good proportions and length. Well set, medium ears. Strong neck into a well angulated front. Super length of ribbing and firm loin. Balanced and well muscled in the rear and really stands four square. A straightforward, sound and balanced mover with super drive from the rear. Pleasure to award her Best Puppy. BP.
2. Pitcon & Ince’s Jolihem Truly Scrumptious. Another pleasing puppy bitch, just giving away a little in maturity and togetherness. A lovely size but with super strength and substance to grow into. Feminine in head but not quite the proportions here of 1, perhaps a touch narrow through. Excellent angulation in front and balanced in the rear. Super depth of brisket and infill of forechest. Lovely compact feet. A fairly sound moving bitch, but not the balance or stride of 1.
3. Hall’s Nyasharose Let’s Dance.
Puppy Bitch (2,0)
1. Pearce’s Msingi Me A Lullaby. Pleasing for size, substance and she is certainly all of a piece. Perhaps wouldn’t mind a touch more length for ideal proportions. Balanced head with dark eyes. Good strength to her long neck and flows smoothly into well laid shoulders, has super length and return of upper arm too. Elbows tucked well under her body and neatly placed. Liked her pasterns and feet. Very good top and underline. Has strength and width to her rear, even if it could be slightly more angulated for absolute balance. Moved well to win this class, but not the stride or activity to go further in the BPB challenge.
2. Adderley’s Tambyssa’s The Temptress. Nicely proportioned bitch and not too big. Feminine head of good length, with such a bright expression. Strong neck and well filled forechest. Very good bone, pasterns and feet. Seemed to be at a bit of an awkward growing phase, just needs to settle into her rear, particularly on the move, for better balance. Moved out well and light on her feet. Just needs lots of time, which she has.
Junior Bitch (4,0) The competition ramped up here and these first two bitches really gave me something to think about.
1. Barker’s Delianza She’s Timeless. This attractive youngster is from a more substantial mould perhaps, but she is good for size and quality through and through. Head in proportion with dark eye and well set ear. Clean neck of ideal length and strength. This bitch really excels in front construction, shoulders are so smooth and well laid and her long upper arm tucks her elbows neatly and right under her body. Best of feet. Already quite finished through the body with excellent depth and fill, ribs well sprung and loin strong and well muscled. Her strength continues through the rear with excellent width to first and second thigh, and ideal balance in angulation. Very impressive on the move, true moving up and down and holds it all together in profile where she shows great drive and power. Contended for top honours and unsurprising to hear she is already on the way to her title.
2. Hodge’s Colkeririn To The Nines JW. Another quality youngster who is the ultimate showgirl. Have judged and admired her as a puppy and very pleased to see her developing well. So feminine in head with lovely eyes and expression. Long neck set very well into her shoulder, not quite the upper arm of 1 but still very reasonable. Ribbed well back and firm in loin, her topline never falters. Just needs to finish off a little in depth and fill of chest. Excellent rear quarters; super bend of stifle and width of thigh, hocks well let down and strong. Impressed me no end on the move, loved her carriage and has such an easy and scopey gait. Title worthy, no doubt; her time will come I’m sure.
3. Murray’s Dellared Easy Skanking.
Yearling Bitch (3,0)
1. Hall’s Msingi Fancy That at Cynami JW. Super proportions and a moderate balance to this bitch. Feminine throughout, she scored in her refinement here over 2. Her head is well balanced with good length, though could be a touch more dry. Enough neck and pleasing front angulation, could have a touch more infill of forechest. Super top and underline which she holds on the move. Very pleasing in the rear, well bent stifles without being overdone and well let down hocks. Moved on a fair stride holding her topline.
2. Phillips’ Alexia Lyonesse. Strong and athletic bitch. Still retains femininity in her head with good length and a flat skull, framed with well set ears. Fairly good angulation to her front but stands a touch wide. Nice flow to her topline, smooth over the croup with a well set tail. Just needs time to drop and fill out as she appeared a little tubular through the body. Well muscled rear quarters. Sound moving bitch with a length stride but would like to see her much more settled.
3. Riches’ Sofala What About Me.
Post Graduate Bitch (7,1)
1. Farleigh’s Kinabula’s Cup Of Ambition. This bitch has a look of quality and strength. Really liked the clean flow to her outline, even if her topline could be somewhat firmer on the stack at times. Still, she holds it perfectly on the move so I forgave that. Beautiful head and expression. Excellent neck and front angulation, though elbows could be a touch tighter. Lovely straight forelegs, correct bone and feet. Textbook hindquarters, so well balanced and super width of thigh, with strong, low hocks. Excellent condition and correct crowns and ridge. Really uses herself on the move with such a light and easy gait, holding herself very well.
2. Healey’s Kiromol Reckon I’m Hot. A little less of this bitch all through and not quite the flow of outline of 1, but appreciated her proportions and moderate balance in angulation. Certainly feminine in head with good length, if a little light in eye. Enough neck and front fairly well laid back. Good depth of brisket but cuts up a little more than ideal. Firm topline, smooth over the croup and well set tail. A sound mover but unable to match the stride of 1.
3. Shaw’s Negasi Goldberry.
Limit Bitch (6,1)
1. Farleigh’s Kinabula’s Stay Calm And Smile. Super proportions and balance to this bitch. Upstanding and impressive in outline, which is firm both standing and moving. Loved her head, eyes and expression, just beautiful. Strong neck with just enough length. Excellent layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Could drop a little more in chest but I note she has only just gone 2 and she still has a very pleasing underline. Moderate rear angulation with good strength. Very active on the move with a long, free stride. Just lacked the finish in the challenge but has quality to go all the way.
2. Mills & Parsons’ Priorpark Pride And Joy to Nzuri JW. A stronger bitch all through and a little longer in proportions, but has quality. She has super angles fore and aft. Well balanced head, if not the expression of 1. Slightly better in neck and front than 1, in fact her whole front construction is textbook right down to her compact feet. Super depth and length of ribcage, though not as firm in topline as 1. Balanced rear with super width of thigh and low hocks. A sound, functional mover, if not with the carriage and activity of 1.
3. Larkin’s Asharaa’s Hey There Georgie Girl JW.
Open Bitch (7,2) Strong class.
1. Parsons’ Ch Priorpark Proof In Pudding JW. A beautiful bitch who impressed a lot for her overall proportions, balance and flowing outline, which she held completely on the move. She may be as strong as I’d like but I felt she combined strength, activity and quality to a high degree and is so very light on her feet whilst moving. Balanced head retaining femininity, with lovely eyes and expression. So well constructed throughout and in peak maturity and condition. Excellent crowns and ridge. She really excels on the move where she is sound out and back and goes on such a long, free and active stride in profile. A true pleasure to award her the CC and BOB and delighted to see her take 2nd place in a quality Hound Group. A class act! BCC & BOB.
2. Nolan’s Ch Priorpark Pearl Of Wisdom for Rumialana JW. Another beauty from this kennel who is again so full of quality. A little more feminine in outlook than 1 but is very similar in proportions, balance and clean outline. Feminine head with good length and dark, expressive eyes. Lovely long neck and well angled front, balanced by her rear. Super length and depth of ribcage and pleasing in top and underline. Another shown in super condition with a gleaming, glossy coat. Light and active on the move with a ground covering stride, perhaps just not quite the drive and power from the rear of 1. Still, she really pushed 1 all the way and in the end, had to settle for the RCC. Lovely bitch. RBCC.
3. Bates’ Ch Gunthwaites Red Hot Rose JW.
Veteran Bitch (5,1)
1. Parker’s Ch Kiromol As You Like It with Azuli JW. An honest, moderate bitch who is very well balanced. Thought her head and expression was beautiful, totally balanced in skull and muzzle and dark eyes. Strong neck and pleasing layback in front, with a well filled chest of correct width. Lovely straight forelegs, some spring of pastern and compact feet. Well ribbed and firm in topline. Moderate rear with pleasing strength. A sound and functional mover with a fairly good stride. BVIB.
2. Phillips’ Amber Rainbow Westkamp at Alexia. A slightly stronger made bitch but with very good overall proportions. She is balanced in angulation fore and aft, and had slightly more here than 1. Not quite as well balanced in the head as 1, but has pleasing eye colour and pigment. Strong bone, pasterns and feet. Pleasing flow of outline, with a deep chest and firm in loin. Smooth over the croup with a well set tail. Not quite the accuracy and soundness on the move of 1.
3. Sodemann’s Int Ch Storms River Aivana-Malia.
Special Beginners Bitch (4,0)
1. Thomas-Bassett’s Bonfirebeau Red Skye at Skyleridge. A feminine and moderate bitch. Pleasing head with flat skull, correct stop and bright expression. Neck of good length and strength. I’d prefer some more angles fore and aft. Pleasing depth and ribbing and short, firm loin. Shown in good muscular condition. Won this class on the move where she really uses herself and goes on a light and positive stride. BSBIB.
2. Picton & Ince’s Jolihem Truly Scrumptious.
3. Hall’s Nyasharose Let’s Dance.
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch (2,0)
1. Phillips’ Alexia Lyonesse.
2. Sodemann’s Int Ch Storms River Aivana-Malia. Good for size and femininity. A little too square in proportions. Pleasing length to her head and balanced in skull and muzzle. Dark, expressive eyes. Could be a little cleaner in throat. Enough length of neck and front angulation. Excellent depth and spring of ribcage. Balanced angulation to her rear quarters with well let down hocks. Not the stride or soundness on the move of 1.
