Portuguese Water Dog

Thank you to the exhibitors who accepted me as a replacement judge on the day and accepted my decisions so sportingly.

1ST 11065 - Rarjo Thane of Fife Macduff under Druavella (Mr C & Mrs J Rumming) I had judged this one at an open show in a stakes class when he was just 6 months and it was lovely to see how he had matured. He presents a very smart outline, nice for size and balance with short neck, good topline, well laid shoulders and strong, well angulated rear. Handsome head developing well for his age with good breadth of skull, nice eyes and slightly tapering muzzle. Moved freely, needs to firm up in front and was a little close away but he is still a baby with plenty of maturing to do. Presented in super coat and condition and handled well. BPD, Best Special Beginner and later took 4th in the Sp Beg Group, congratulations!

2ND 11073 - Rarjo Earl of Fife Macduff (Mr B C & Ms L G & Miss M Williams & Newton & Slack) Brother of 1 and built on similar lines. Super for size and balance, in such fit condition for a puppy, strong in front with good angulation, super chest and ribbing, short loin and well angulated rear. Gorgeous head and expression, good furrow, nice eyes and strong jaw. In immaculate condition as always from this kennel. I thought he would be my winner but he wasn’t cooperating with his handler and had decided that 2 shows one after the other was one show too much! I have to agree that for a breed with a small entry it is a lot to ask of the puppies in particular to be in and out of the ring several times in quick succession and maintain concentration. He did however return to the puppy group I was judging at the ‘other’ show later in the day and showed his socks off, standing and moving like I knew he could, to take Puppy Group 2 in super company, without doubt a future Champion from this clever breeder.

1ST 11071 - Ch Rarjo Captain Curl Macduff JW ShCEx OSW (Mr B C & Ms L G Williams & Newton)

BOB last time I judged and again there was nothing to compare. Outstanding quality, fabulous on the move and presented to perfection. Only 2 years old but has already made his mark and it’s not hard to see why. Super for construction which is reflected in is effortless, accurate movement. His head is so handsome with the most fabulous penetrating expression and his quality curly coat is presented beautifully to finish a stunning picture. An easy choice for BD and later BOB.

2ND 11069 - Peixinho Caput Draconis JW (Mrs S Williams) Another I have judged previously as a puppy and has really matured well in that time. Not quite the coat or presentation of 1 but hands on there is a nice dog underneath with good front and rear assembly, firm topline, deep, wide chest and well sprung ribs. Masculine head with correct length of muzzle, strong jaw, dark round eyes and attentive expression. Moved very well in all directions, accurate out and back and held a lovely outline as he moved with purpose around the ring. RBD

2ND 11066 - Calladano Amadeus Andante (Mr R & Mrs V Thompson) Nice size with short neck, good topline, well ribbed back, sound rear with good tail set and carriage. Masculine head with wide nose and open nostrils, round eyes, strong jaw and pleasing expression. Moved soundly but not as accurate out and back as 1 and didn’t quite hold himself as well in profile.

1ST 11072 - Rarjo The Cross of Macduff (Mr B C & Ms L G Williams & Newton). Another from the same litter as the male puppies and at this stage is the most immature of the litter. Nevertheless she is full of quality and once she gets herself together she will no doubt attract many admirers. Nice size and shape, balanced angulation fore and aft, good bone and feet, short loin and well set and carried tail. Feminine head with good furrow, defined stop, well spaced eyes and well balanced length of muzzle. Moved well and is every so happy, a delightful puppy.

2ND 11067 - Calladano Balou Belle (Mr R & Mrs V Thompson) Quite small and a little short in body for ideal balance, straight front, level topline, well set and carried tail, could have more angulation behind. Pretty head with strong jaw, nice eyes and expression. Moved ok.

1ST 11070 - Rarjo Thistle Macduff (Mr B C & Ms M & Mr K Williams & Kudo & Kiyoi) Yet another puppy from the same litter as the previous class winner and this one seems to have the edge over her sister at the moment. A little more of her than I’d like but she uses herself very well on the move, accurate out and back and holding her outline firm in profile. Balanced in outline with strong neck and shoulders, good depth of chest and spring of rib, short loin and well angulated rear. Large, feminine head with nice eyes, well set ears and alert expression. Handled and presented to an advantage and although still has plenty of maturing to do her balance and lively, effortless movement impressed me for RBB and BP and I was delighted to hear she later took Puppy Group 2, well done!

1ST 11061 - Ankors Aria (Miss L A Biss) Another who is just a touch bigger all through than I’d prefer but still presents a typical, well balanced outline with short, strong neck, firm topline, decent chest, well ribbed back to strong loin and well muscled rear. Good for substance and bone, good feet and well set and carried tail. Large head of good proportions, defined stop, good furrow, dark round eyes and super expression. Moved well with a typical action, accurate in all directions. A lovely example of the breed and easy choice here for BB.

2ND 11062 - Adventurer’s All The Nights Like This of Belezaflor JW (Imp Fin) (Mrs L & Mr J Kirk) Better for size than 1 and such a cheeky attitude which didn’t really help her make the best of herself but again, having 2 shows in quick succession probably didn’t help her concentration! Lovely chest and ribbing, decent shoulders, good bone and feet, well angulated rear with tail set and carried correctly. Lovely head and expression, good muzzle and strong jaw, round eyes, good furrow and well set ears. Moved well enough when she settled but I’m sure she can go better! Beautifully presented coat and fit condition.
