East Anglian Labrador Retriever Club

Breed: Retriever (Labrador)

The East Anglian Labrador Retriever Club Championship Show Saturday 7th March 2026

Thank you very much to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge your championship show which was a great honour. There was a lovely atmosphere all day and everyone seemed happy and positive and accepted my placings with good sportsmanship. I had some lovely dogs to go over so thank you to all those who entered under me. I was looking for well made, sound dogs with correct heads, coat and tail and who’s construction if given the opportunity would enable them to do a good day’s work in the field. I was not disappointed. In general, I think there have been improvements over the last few years. I did see three or four dogs that were much too heavy but they were in the minority. The breed standard does call for very active and very agile dogs and if they are carrying too much weight and substance they cannot be. I videoed my line up and showed it to an A panel field trial judge who said the dogs were lovely, well covered but looked fit and would be able to work. So, what more could we ask for? I did see a few otherwise lovely dogs who had a misplaced lower canine tooth sticking out to the side which I had to penalise so try and avoid this creeping in. There were some otherwise lovely dogs standing that moved close behind. I know its not easy but try to avoid this and keep them as fit as possible to strengthen their hind quarters. I thoroughly enjoyed my day thank you and my co-judge and I were of a like mind.

Dogs

BP. (2 1) Bills’s RUMHILL JAGERMEISTER 4 mo Chocolate stood alone but a nicely balanced baby and a very happy chappie. Lovely head, nice eye and colour with kind expression. Just the right size for his age. Good pigment, lovely neat feet and good bone. Correct barrel rib. Excellent coat hard on top with good undercoat with just that very slight wave to prove it. Correct angulation all through and moved very well for his age.

V. (10. 7) 1. Jenner’s LYJANSEN SIMBA'S SAVANNA WGC 8yo yellow in excellent condition firm, fit and well muscled. Correct angulation all through. Well balanced, neat strong feet. Level topline held well on the move. Very good neck and shoulder placement. Lovely kind head and expression. Good coat and in this class moved really well. Unfortunately, he had obviously stiffened up in the challenge so I could not give him further honours but a really classic and classy Labrador. 2. Hodge’s SH CH/IR SH CH/LUX CH NAIKEN EAST MEETS WEST (AI) JW 7yo Black Good head and expression. Very good bone and neat feet. Excellent coat with hard top coat and good undercoat. Good topline and tail set. Good layback of shoulder and excellent hind angulation. Moved well. A great representative of the breed. 3. Stigt & Wolstenhome-Egertons’s NLD CH CARPENNY PHAROH

FT. (0 .0)

MP (3 3) 1. Parker’s BRUADARACH BALLACHULISH 6mo chocolate. Lovely head and expression with kind eye. Good layback of shoulder and neck line. Excellent correct coat. Held a good level topline standing and on the move and generally a well balanced shape all through. Upper arm should grow on a bit with age. Well boned with good neat feet. Tail set maybe a touch high but nothing serious. With my co-judge pleased to award him BMPIS 2. Coode’s WARRINGAH TIMOURON GUNDAGAI Black 6 month old baby who’s stage of growth meant he was a little bum high today. He had a lovely head and expression with nice dark brown eye colour. Good correct coat with correct tail shape. Good front. Moved Ok for age. 3. Hosking’s CORNISHWATER WHEALPROSPER

P. (2 2) Powell’s SEATALLAN ENGLISH OAK really classic 11mo black boy. Excellent head with kind expression with good proportions and length of muzzle. Well boned with strong neat feet. Well balanced with correct angulation and good spring of rib and short coupled without being overdone. Excellent coat and good otter tail. Moved very well for age. Pleased with the agreement of my co-judge to award him BPIS 2. Metcalf’s BISH BASH BOSH BAILEYDALE 10mo yellow. Lovely, head and expression. Very well put together and well balanced with correct angulation all through. His coat might give the illusion of being soft but he actually had a really good coat type with a hard top coat and good undercoat. Good topline held well on the move. Good bone and neat feet. Movement overall needs to tighten but there is no reason this will not come with maturity.

J. (6 4) 1. Shirton’s WOOLMAN FREE AND EASY 14mo pale yellow Excellent balance and correct angulation. Soft head and expression but definitely a boy with good eye shape and colour good dark pigment just of the right amount to not make him look too hard. Good barrel ribs short coupled with good bone and neat feet and Ok for length of leg. Good correct coat. Moved very well and kept a good level topline. 2. Pattison’s DYLSONLEIGH TITAN FOR PATTILANDS 12 mo mid yellow and another with excellent angulation and well balanced. Kind head and expression with good head shape. Good topline and tail set. Slight kink in tail shape but he has an excellent coat type with good bone and neat feet and clothing his tail. Moved OK. 3. Pegg’s STREAMANDA WINTERFELL WITH JANCET

Y. (5.5) 1. Hodge’s NAIKEN ISLAND HOPPING (AI) JW 20 mo nicely headed chocolate dog with kind expression. Good length of muzzle and good brown eye colour shade. Well balanced and angulated all through. Good depth of chest and barrel ribs. Moved very well and kept a good level topline with correct tail set and shape. Good bone and neat feet. 2. Baron’s LANDEBEC VENTURA JW Nearly 2 yo yellow dog. Lovely kind head and expression. Good bone and feet. Well balanced with good angles all through. In good muscle tone with correct double coat and also clothing his tail. Very slight kink in tail but moved very well. 3. Mount’s BUCKHOLT MAGNUM MAXIMUS

M. (3. 3) 1. Edwards’s KIMBAJAK MASTER MICHAEL 10 month old mid yellow but really nice for age. Good angulation and balance all through with an excellent front with good neck line and top line. Kind head and expression and not overdone. Good bone and neat feet. Good barrel rib and short coupled. Moved very well. 2. Parkers BRUADARACH BALLACHULISH 1st in minor puppy class see write up. 3. Mount’s BUCKHOLT MYSTIC MARCUS

N. (4.3) 3. Pegg’s STREAMANDA WINTERFELL WITH JANCET Chocolate who came third in a good junior class. He was a bit more settled in this class and was the best mover of this class. Lovely head and expression. Excellent correct coat with under coat. Good front, topline and neckline. Good turn of stifle. Good tail set and otter tail. Still immature and at the slightly rangy stage but a good dog and I am sure will settle and sort himself out with maturity. 2. Mount’s BUCKHOLT MAGNUM MAXIMUS. Chocolate dog who was third in yearling. He has a lovely head and expression. Excellent coat and otter tail. Well boned with neat feet. Good barrel rib and short coupled. Good turn of stifle. I would prefer lightly more angulation to upper arm which tended to spoil is front movement but due to his age there is still time for this to improve. 3. Perkins’s Keeninspires Grand Duke

UG. (6 6) 1. Johnson’s TANRONENS JACK FROST AT CREMINO 15 mo yellow dog. Lovely head and expression and just right for age with correct length of muzzle. Well balanced with excellent front and good neckline. Good barrel ribs and depth of chest but also with good length of leg. Well boned with neat feet. Excellent correct coat and otter tail with correct tail set. Moved well but was a touch close behind. 2. Holden’s FLYENPYGS IN BLANKETS OVER LABROTKNIGHT JW. Nice, typey 16 mo black with a good head and expression. His behaviour needs to settle a bit but he has good bone and feet. Good barrel ribs and is short and strong in the coupling. Excellent coat and tail. He moved OK but not quite as well as the first placed. 3. Bold’s LAKENMEADOW GILBERT'S GIFT

G. (8 .8) 1. Gunn’s EXELBY FINCH Very nice black dog. Lovely head and expression. Well angulated and balanced. Strong quarters with good level topline and strong through the loins. Good barrel rib and depth of chest well boned with neat feet. Moved well. 2. Wilmshurst’s DOLWEN WISH UPON A STAR OF MANDAMAY Yellow dog close up to 1. with lovely head and expression. Good angulation and balance all through. Good bone and neat feet. Level topline and correct tail set with good shape to the tail. Good rib cage and very pleasing outline. Just tipped on movement today. 3. Davey’s SOUTHRIDGE RICOCHET

Good length of leg. Very pleased to award him the RCC. 2. Shirton’s WOOLMAN DAY DREAM BELIEVER Another quality black with excellent coat and tail. Great head and expression. Good bone and neat feet. Good barrel rib and depth of chest. Just preferred the second thigh of the first placed dog. 3. Bishop’s TREWINNARD VERO INTO DEMADON

ML (10. 8) 1. Woodley’s ALKHAMHURST PRIME SHOT Quality black dog. Lovely head and expression. Good spring of rib with good bone and feet. In excellent coat with good otter tail. Well balanced classic outline and not overdone in anyway. Strong quarters would prefer a touch more length of upper arm. Moved the best in this class although a touch close behind. 2. Rowley’s TREANTAGH HOT SPELL Quality pale yellow dog. Very nice head and expression with kind correct shaped eye. Good bone and feet. Deep through the chest with good spring of rib. Good angulation although a touch longer cast than the first placed but well balanced with excellent coat and otter tail. 3. Johnson’s CREMINO CELEBRITY JW

L. Metcalf’s RUMHILL BERTIE WOOSTER BY BAILEYDALE JW Chocolate dog and the best mover of the class. Gorgeous head and expression. Good angulation all through with good bone and neat feet. Excellent coat and otter tail although he was a little lacking part way down the tail today. Good spring of rib and depth of chest. To be hair splitting I would like a touch more length of leg. 2. Finney’s CARPENNY KIPLING Quality classic black with all the essentials. A lovely typical head and expression. Excellent correct coat and tail. Well balanced with good spring of rib, good bone and feet. Little bit demanding in the ring. 3. Douglas’s CENTANALEE WHISKY SOUR AT KYORLI

O. (5 4) 1. Stigt & Wolstenhome-Egertons’s INT/MULTI CH CARPENNY PATRICK Nice type of yellow dog of correct weight and sensible size. Classic head and expression. Correct double coat and good otter tail Good angulation all through and well balanced. Moved OK 2. Chorab’s MULTI CH PASSION OF MY LIKE DJANGO This was a black dog of lovely type but unfortunately was too heavy for me although he was of more agile appearance than the 3rd placed. The weight issue was a shame and meant he did not move as well as I am sure he is capable off. He has a lovely head and expression with a kind eye although it is a touch round. He is well balanced with good angulation all through with an excellent coat and tail. 3. Boulden’s RUMHILL FIRECRACKER JW

S B. (2 2) 1. Way’s INCANTATOR FABULINUS A really nice type of yellow not overdone in anyway. Really nice head and expression. Well balanced with good bone and neat feet. Excellent coat and otter tail. Good spring of ribs and depth of chest. Moved quite well for his handler once he settled down. Handler just needs more experience and to stop the barking for food as it does not make him appear to be the biddable temperament which is so important. 2. Wade’s KIMBAJAK PRINCE CHARMING Very nice head, good angulation correct spring of rib with excellent coat and tail. Carrying far too much weight which spoilt his movement and splayed out his feet.

S. W. (3 3) 1. Woodley’s CH ALKHAMHURST MOMENT OF TRUTH A really classic type of black dog masculine but without being overdone. Kind head and expression with good colour eye and eye set. Good angulation all through, well balanced moving on good bone and neat feet with good length of leg. Correct spring of rib and depth of chest. Excellent correct coat with hard top coat and good undercoat. Moved very well in good hard fit condition. Pleased to award him BD and on the agreement of the referee BIS 2. Coode’s WARRINGAH'S THE BLUFF JW SGWC Another quality black in excellent double coat with a good otter tail. Very good masculine but kind head and eye. Good bone and neat feet. Good spring of rib and depth of chest. Level topline held well on the move and he moved very well. 3. Jenner’s Lyjansen Simba's Savanna WGC
