City of Birmingham C.A. Championship Dog Show 5th September 2026.

It was a pleasure to judge at this show, which was held at a superb venue and so well run. My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge, to my two stewards who kept the ring running smoothly and finally to the exhibitors for a wonderful entry. I’m not naive enough to realise that my entry, which bucked a recent trend, was helped by a breed show being held on the same day, a great venue and in a central location. None of us like change but if recent events in the dog world show us anything, we have to move with the times and dog showing as we know it is changing.

I have never been a fan of two championship shows on one day but going by today’s entries perhaps it is the way forward if we want our hobby to survive. The cost of travelling to shows is spiralling. Our entries are such now that it is more than doable to run two shows on one day if the organisation is spot on.

CAIRN TERRIERS.

Special Beginners Dog (1)

1. Rogers Copseleaze Midnight.

Grey brindle 11 month old puppy. Lovely, happy character. Strong head with good stop and well carried ears. Straight topline which he held on the move. Good harsh coat coming through just needs more furnishings on legs. Moved out soundly just needs to learn to move without crabbing which would make his outline on the move look so much better.

Veteran Dog (1)

1. Lamb and The late Saltmarsh Birselaw Come Dancing With Macmoon.

Grey brindle dog. Beautiful head with good stop and excellent ear set. Balanced angles front and rear. Good harsh coat. Very good movement coming and going and held a good topline and tail set. Just lost out on best veteran to the freedom of the bitches’ movement.

Puppy Dog (3)

1. Smiths Cloverbrook Pol Roger Of Gethlee.

Wheaten brindle 10 month old dog. Attractive head with good stop. Good harsh coat just coming in. On the move held a good outline with straight topline and well carried tail. Excellent rear action just needs to tighten in front. Slightly long in loin but this did enable him to really cover the ground on the move. BP and shortlisted in the puppy group.

2. Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Silver Bram. 

Smaller wheaten 11 month old dog. Good balance of angles front and rear. Head needs to mature, eyes a tad close together and not the expression of the winner. Covered the ground well on the move, holding shape and well carried tail. Particularly good rear movement using his hocks. Just needs to tighten in front.

3. Rogers Copseleaze Midnight.

Junior Dog (2).

1. Hogartys Ch Cadagio That’s What I like.

Red 17 month old dog. Creates such an impression on first sight. Beautiful head with good stop, excellent eye and well carried ears. Balanced angles front and rear with strong topline and excellent tail set. Great harsh coat presently beautifully as ever. On the move really covers the ground holding a great shape and very true coming and going. Just now and again he gets on his toes, and his topline can go and that was the deciding factor for BOB, but he is still a young dog, and this will get better with age. DCC.

2. Rose and Harrisons Carradine Little Bird

Red 16-month-old dog. Very different type to the winner being a bit shorter on the leg. Strong body with good front construction. Harsh red coat just needs more furnishings on legs. Movement efficient just not as fluid as the winner.

Graduate Dog (1).

1. Griffiths Wonderpaws Darth Vader.

Grey brindle dog, attractive head, good stop and ear carriage just a bit heavy in jaw. Excellent harsh coat. Particularly like this boys topline, tail set and quarters. He really covered the ground holding a good outline. Just would like him a bit cleaner in front.

Post Graduate Dog (1).

1. Dennis and Waites Svendalens Moon Stone.

Red brindle with attractive head. Straight front and strong quarters. Moved well holding a good topline and driving from behind. Just needs more coat and furnishing to finish the picture.

Limit Dog (4).

1. Lamb and The Late Saltmarsh Tycadno Shining Star Around Macmoon JW.

Wheaten dog. Attractive head with good stop, well carried ears and strong muzzle. Straight front and strong quarters. Excellent topline and tail set. Shown in tight harsh coat. Moved very well and very correct coming ang going, maintaining an excellent outline. Unfortunately gets very easily distracted and in the final decisions just gave up showing and lacked that attitude that I like to see in a terrier.

2. Sinclair and Tothills Tycadno Starburst At Hreysihus.

Another wheaten dog from same breeder as the winner and very similar in type. Particularly attractive head with excellent stop, good muzzle and well-placed ears. Good front construction and strong topline which held on the move with good tail set and carriage. Moved very true in front just straighter stifles makes him a bit restricted behind. Shown in excellent harsh coat could carry more leg furnishings to advantage.

3. Saichs Lindcoly Golden Buick.

1. Parkins Mosspur Into The Shadows.

Red dog with good overall balance. Attractive head with good stop and well carried ears. Excellent front and rear construction. Straight front, strong topline and good tail set. Moved very well covering the ground and holding an excellent outline. Shown in good harsh coat. Can be his own worst enemy on the stand. He needs to project himself more and show a bit more terrier spirit for me as he appears to get distracted very easily. RES DCC.

2. Lucas and Tobutts Ch Carradine Sir Percival.

Smaller red brindle dog than winner. Strong head with good stop and well carried ears. Good angles front and rear. True coming and going but not the scope on the move of the winner. Just would like to see him a tad up on the leg for ideal balance. 

3. Morleys Kanawha Spy Man.

Special Beginners Bitch(2)

1. Metcalf-Saults Cannwood Can’t Get Enough.

Wheaten bitch. Excellent type, attractive head. Good front and strong quarters. Moved very true coming and going holding a good topline. Just carrying a tad too much weight for me.

Veteran Bitch (4).

1. Testers Airytykes Excuse Me Vw.

Small red bitch with good proportions and certainly didn’t look her age. Straight front and good quarters, strong topline and good tail set. She comes into her own on the move where she covered the ground effortlessly holding a wonderful outline.

2. Osborns Tweslam Chasing Rainbows.

Dark brindle bitch with lovely type. Attractive head with good stop and well carried ears. Straight front and good quarters. Moved well but not holding her shape or with the freedom of the winner which was the deciding factor.

3. Goldfinchs Ch Tycadno Bright Star For Kanawha.

Minor Puppy Bitch (1).

1. Saichs Lindcoly Whose Looking.

Red brindle bitch. Really nice to go over on the table. Attractive head. Straight front with good angles front and rear. Very free mover covering the ground. Just needs to hold her shape and topline on the move to finish the picture which I am sure she will do with time.

Puppy Bitch (4).

1. Smiths Cloverbrook Moet N’Chandon.

Wheaten brindle 10 month old bitch. Really liked the balance of this girl. Slightly steep in upper arm, but this didn’t impede her movement, strong quarters. In very fit condition she really motored round the ring and very true coming and going. Still very raw she needs to strengthen in head and develop in chest, which I am sure she will with time.

2. Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Red Ayla.

Red 11 month old bitch. Different type to the winner being shorter in the leg and actually more together. Head needs to develop. Straight front with strong quarters and good topline. Moved very true coming and going just not the freedom and power of the winner.

3. Gardners Lentrica Look To the Furture With Aberforth.

Junior Bitch (4).

1. Hiam and Harrisons Carradine Boozy Suzy.

Red brindle 16 month old bitch. The most mature in the class. Shown in beautiful harsh coat. Good head with good stop and well carried ears. Excellent front construction, straight front. Strong topline and good quarters. Moved freely maintaining good topline and tail set.

2. Gardners Lentrica New Beginnings For Aberforth.

Dark brindle 11 month old bitch, giving a lot away in age to the winner. Shown totally out of coat but a good harsh coat coming through. Straight front with strong quarters. On the move covering the ground soundly just not holding the outline of the winner.

3. Tester’s Airytykes Turn Up The Night.

Graduate Bitch (5).

1. Parker-Tuckers Uniquecottage Sorrel.

Wheaten bitch. On the smaller size but beautifully balanced. Attractive head with good stop, just needs to use her ears more to enhance her expression. Good front construction and strong quarters. Very free mover who really covers the ground, very true coming and going. Initially I though her topline could be better, but it was an optical illusion caused by coat. Looked much better in the challenge.

2. Samets Svendalens Pearl.

Wheaten brindle bitch. Good head, well carried ears a very attentive show girl. Creates a lovely outline on the stand with good front construction, straight top line and strong quarters. Good mover by not quite the freedom of movement of the winner.

3. Saichs Lindcoly This Is The One.

Post Graduate Bitch (4).

1. Waughs Tribannon Nancy Lou.

Wheaten bitch. Good head with well carried ears just needs to fill in under the eye a tad and gain head furnishing to enhance the look. Straight front, standing well forward on her feet with strong topline and strong rear quarters. On the move covers the ground really well, maintaining an excellent outline. Still young and needs to develop in front to finish the picture.

2. Shannon and Storrs Brenndarcy Supertramp.

Red Brindle bitch, very different type to winner being shorter on leg and heavier all though. Strong head, straight front, straight topline and powerful quarters. Moved very freely maintaining excellent top line and good tail set. Shown in full coat that tended to make her look a bit heavy all through. Great character though that looks as she really enjoys life, great to see in a Cairn.

3. Samets Gyncairn Secret Message.

Limit Bitch (5).

Class headed by three lovely red bitches. All by the same sire and so similar in type just small details separated them on the day.

1. Percys Ariom Calypso Dancer With Winetta.

Impressive red bitch shown in a tight harsh coat. Beautiful head with good stop and well carried ears. Straight front, excellent front construction balanced by strong quarters. Straight topline and good tail set. Moved very well covering the ground and very true coming and going. When she holds it altogether, she looks stunning going round. She does at times lose concentration and loses her shape on the move, thisthe was the deciding factor when it came to the ticket. RES BCC and delighted that makes her into a worthy champion.

2. Firths Glenrood Silent Whisper At Cairngold.

Very close up to the winner. Another stunning head, good stop, well carried small ears and great expression. Beautifully presented harsh red coat. Excellent front construction, straight topline, good tail set and good quarters. Moved very true coming and going and held her shape on the move. The winner just had a bit more activity on the move, but so close between them.

3. Osborns Tweslam Be Gin The Magic.

Open Bitch (8).

Another lovely class to judge with some beautiful bitches, minor details separated them all.

1. Griffiths You’re So Bossy Seglavi With Wonderpaws.

Red bitch that created a wonderful impression on first look. Strong head, good stop and well carried ears. Shown in harsh red coat. Excellent front construction, straight topline and powerful quarters. Really comes into her own on the move where she covers the ground with ease holding a wonderful outline. She is so balanced and holds herself so well she just couldn’t stand wrong. CC and BOB.

2. Waughs Tribannon Angel’s Kiss.

Dark brindle bitch with the most wonderful head, good stop, well carried ears and strong muzzle. Good construction front and rear. Particularly strong topline and excellent tail set. Like the winner she holds herself so well displaying a confident terrier attitude. On the move she covers the ground well holding the same excellent outline. Just preferred the balance of the winner on the day.

3. Hogartys Ch & Ir Ch Cadagio Mad About You.
