Field Spaniel 

My second time awarding challenge certificates in this wonderful native breed. We were second in the ring after NSDTR and whilst it was warmer, it was not unpleasant, a great size ring, which had become a little dusty, but didn’t effect the dogs at all. 

My thanks to the super stewards Steve and Janet for their untiring assistance. 

It’s difficult to make sweeping statements but I do hope that the leanness to the head isn’t lost, a few were a touch strong, a couple were lower to the ground than I recall judging on previous occasions, movement was sound but a few lacked power and drive from the rear. There were a few exhibits with far too much condition, which ruined the outline and was most noticeable on the move, had they been in better fettle, places would have changed undoubtedly. 

Temperaments were excellent and it was a most enjoyable morning in their company of this wonderful spaniel.

1ST Aust Ch Fieldspan An Unfinished Tale with Ewtor (Imp Aus) NAF (Mrs L J Moss). 

My goodness, I was quite taken aback by this chap, such maturity and coordination for one so young, it’s like he’s a born showman, I really liked his outline and bone and his silhouette is spot on – he is unmistakeably ‘noble’, when going over him, I found myself noting that he would easily challenge for higher honours. He has an independence and sensitivity that is so typical of this breed, with wide open eyes, low set ear, in neck he is strong and muscular, and his shoulders are well laid back, on the move he typifies unhurried and takes everything in his stride, BP and one I shall watch with interest.

1ST Sonnetend Brothers in Arms JW (Mr O Stone)

An unassuming quiet chap that has a dignity and grace about him, all male, well off for bone and substance, he gave the impression of power and determination, going around he covered the ground well, good spring of rig and a correct silky coat that is emerging well. Round feet with strong pads, in chest he is deep and well developed for one so young, maturing well with more to come, I am sure.

1ST Flyenpyg First Sight (Mr & Mrs Houseman)

An honest typey male, no denying his gender, he has the refinement with the leanness beneath the eyes that one looks for, slightly raised eyebrows, he showed himself so very well, remarkably so, he has a wisdom and sense of high breeding that one expects, he was in absolutely first class condition – a credit to his owners, he is hard and muscular throughout and looks like he could go all day. Not the most profuse of coat, but its straight silky and correct.

1ST Gadhelic Jack Frost (Mrs L J Moss)

I was struck the smooth lines of this male, his typical long neck gave him a typical outline and he has a deep chest that is well developed, together with strong muscular well bent stifles, his head is full of character and notability, I’d have liked a touch more refinement, but given his masculinity I was more accepting, he is sound, driven and determined on the move, his tail carriage is a little high, but his tail set is correct. Show in superb condition, with a straight silky coat, in gleaming condition, he was handled to full advantage DCC. 

2ND 5184 - Sh Ch Elgert Disco Inferno at Knightsbay (Mr R & Mrs S, Miss S Mosedale & Rossiter)

I have admired this exhibit for a while and was by some margin my winner at the outset, I really liked the noble leanness beneath his eyes with brows giving him expression and softness, he is of good size and substance, scores in neck into well made shoulders, approaching 7 years, he is in his absolute prime. He was sadly for me, carrying too much weight, which distracted from his rib and strong loin and was most noticeable on the move. Had he had less weight I would have taken great pleasure in awarding him the CC but today he had to make do with the RDCC.

1ST Cwcnels Elderberry (Mrs S M Harnett)

A laid back pleasing exhibit of nice size and shape, a touch heavier in head but there us plenty of works and lets you know she’s spaniel through and through, an ever wagging tail completes the picture, her eye is of lovely colour of almond shape, she shows well and is sound and active on the move, with an untiring attitude, a lovely natured exhibit that couldn’t help but make you smile. I adored the level of independence she demonstrated and there were moments where I wasn’t convinced she really required a handler, despite clearly having great affection for her.

1ST Kingsmist Miss Marple JW (Mr M J & Mrs A E Harding). 

An eight-year-old bitch not remotely showing her age, aside from a little greyness to her ears, which rather suits her. I liked her in head and expression, she is super in body with excellent rib a good depth, she is sound going around and doesn’t remotely appear like a veteran, her coat is in super order, being straight and silky, she was a pleasure to judge and I was pleased to award her BV. 

2ND Ewtor Crazy Kinda Love at Pennybeck (Mr G S & Mrs J C Jones). 

A lovely feminine bitch, there was nothing overdone about her, her head was melting in its expression and super to handle, strong dentition, well developed nostrils, muzzle long and her ears are moderately long, her coat was not quite in the condition of 1 today, which cost her, but there is so much to like, epitomises noble and sensitive and sound.

1ST Nadavin Ailsa (Mr C H & Mrs J Holgate). 

Such quality for one so young, she oozes type comes across as sensitive and intelligent and has such body in terms of breadth and depth for one so young, in head she has the leanness and work you want in a field spaniel, together with the brows which are emerging creates femineity and character, she is sound and active on the move and gives you the impression of being untiring.

1ST Nadavin Ailsa (Mr C H & Mrs J Holgate). 

What an exciting prospect this sensitive lady is, she is just where you’d want for her age, lovely to handle and stands so confidently for one so young, on the move she is sound with long unhurried stride and was so happy and at ease, it was a joy to watch. She conveys the impression of ‘high breeding’ throughout, for one so young there is work in her head, but the moderate stop, low ear set and long and strong neck gives her the femininity one expects. She tired in the challenge but is well worthy of higher awards and will no doubt challenge the impressive puppy dog.

2ND Sonnetend Expresso Love (Miss Ah & Mr Hj Stone & Parvin)

A pleasing bitch, with a sensitivity and kindness that gives this breed great appeal, she wasn’t in the best of spirits but rallied and preserved, sadly also not in the best of coats, lovely round feet, strong muscular rears, hocks well down, moved with drive from the rear, and when she settled, she had a well set tail and demonstrated a lively action with ease. There is much to like, but today was not her day but it was lovely to assess her and give her time required to settle.

1ST Nadavin Aleana Gyda Cochen (Mesdames K & W Bebb-Sutton). 

I adored this lady, she really sang to me, I liked her shape her size, she stands so well ably demonstrating her angles and forechest at a glance, for one so young she has body and a head that is so very lovely to handle, Today she was totally out of coat, but I have no doubt that her coat is silky and straight, she just needs time. I for one, think that she has an exciting future ahead of her and will watch her with interest. It was my pleasure to assess her and despite her coat, I did find myself drawn to her in the challenge.

1ST Elgert Blackpink JW (Ms G Osborn)

I liked this bitch, really coming along well for one so young, I appreciated the length of leg which some lacked, pleasing feminine head and expression into a well-muscled neck leading to good shoulders, super ribs and balanced angulation to the fore. I could imagine her working over challenging terrain with some ease. She was just carrying too much condition today, otherwise she would have undoubtedly challenged for higher honours, of which she is deserved. On the move she was sound and active and made easy work of the big ring, well presented with a glossy silky coat. 

2ND 5183 - Gadhelic Jennyanydots (Miss C S Moore)

A classic head and impression which impressed for type and size, there is a lot to like but today her coat was not in the best of forms and regrettably she paid the price, she doesn’t always stand herself to best advantage which is a real shame because there is much to like, scores in shoulders which are well laid has forelegs of moderate length and correct bone. On the move she was active alert and covered the ground well with a merriment.

1ST Sh Ch Elgert Dancing Queen at Ewtor (Mrs Ae & Mrs Lj Moss)

A black bitch with a glossy and silky coat, not at all profuse or overdone, she had the maturity that creates the well-balanced upstanding sporting spaniel we speak, with the femininity one looks for. She was immaculately presented both in terms of presentation of coat and the in very hardest of condition, really showing her deep and wide chest off to full advantage with well-muscled loin and quarters. She had the leanness and work in skull which was unmistakably ‘field’. She was so typical and in the best of condition and ultimately, she deservedly clinched BCC and BOB, she was a pleasure to judge. 

2ND Fantastic Field Shine Like A Diamond at Gadhelic JW (Imp Fin) (Miss C S Moore)

An appealing exhibit I liked her for size and substance, perhaps a touch strong in head for my personal preference but her type and outline appealed at first glance. She is best being handled, where her proportions and length of rib are evident, in head she is chiselled and noble with a wide-open eye and well-set ears. Her coat is straight and silky not quite with the presentation of one but correct all the same. She gave me a real feel of being an ‘upstanding sporting spaniel’ that could easily go all day. I was pleased to award her the RCC.
