English Springer Spaniel Club – Championship Show

9th May 2026

Jane Eyeington (Meadowdale)

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the officers and committee of the ESSC for their kind invitation to judge at their Championship Show. I am also deeply grateful to all the exhibitors for bringing such wonderful dogs, which were a true pleasure to judge. We were fortunate to have a generously sized ring, allowing the dogs to show themselves at their best. Although the carpet presented a challenge for some when standing. Special thanks to my stewards, Julie and Hazel, for ensuring the smooth running of the ring.

1st Place 33 - Moontorn Drops of Jupiter with Fecimus (Miss A & Mr J & Miss A Macbain & Harrison & Bellamy)

A lovely start to the day, at just 6 months of age this L&W dog, took everything in his stride and showed like an old pro. There is much to appreciate, he presents a lovely, shapely outline for one so young. His head is developing nicely, already showing a soft and gentle expression. He has a beautiful flow from nose to tail and shows good development throughout the body. He stands on well-boned limbs and tight feet. Although a little unsettled front and back, he really strides out impressively in profile.

Class 4. Puppy Dog. Entries: 3 Absentees: 2

1st Place 45 - Bumblecorn Quest (Mrs L & Mr P Stevens)

B&W dog coming up 10 months of age, a compact youngster with several fine qualities. With more experience, his handler will be able to show him to greater advantage. He presents a pleasing overall shape, though today he was carrying a touch too much condition. His head is nicely balanced, with a dark eye that gives a kind expression. He has good depth and wide quarters, though he was a little erratic on the move.

Class 5. Junior Dog. Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1st Place 19 - Eastriding Devotion (Mrs K Jenkinson)

This 16-month-old B&W dog displays lovely overall proportions. Still in his adolescent stage, he has yet to fully mature and drop into himself, which is typical for his age. His head is nicely moulded, with gentle rounding to the backskull and a foreface of proportionate length. A kind, almond-shaped eye gives him a gentle expression. He shows decent fill in the forechest and has a good length of neck, though his topline can be a little unsettled at times. Moves out cleanly and shows good drive.

2nd Place 10 - Favours Joy Ride to Baudelaire (Imp Swe) (Miss H Field-Enticott)

A happy and outgoing, but still very raw 12-month-old L&W dog who has completed his growth and now needs time to fill out and mature, time will be his friend. Slightly finer in head, he nonetheless shows good balance from backskull to foreface, with a nicely toned eye colour and low-set ears. He has a good length of neck and a firm topline, with a slightly longer loin leading to moderate hindquarters. Though unsettled on the move, he strides out purposefully.

Class 6. Yearling Dog. Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place 51 - Chanangel Yorkshire Ale with Bethersden JW (Mr G & Mrs S Tolladay)

A very smart and full of quality, 21-month-old L&W dog, with a beautifully flowing and compact outline, each part seamlessly blending into the next. He displays unexaggerated balance and harmonious symmetry, reflecting honest, sound construction. His head is well balanced, with proportional backskull to foreface, with strength to the muzzle, and just the right depth to the flews, enhanced by refined chiselling and fluting. His eye, though still to darken a little more, is toning to contribute to a gentle and appealing expression. The neck flows smoothly into a solid topline and a well-set tail. He possesses excellent depth of brisket, with ribs carried well back to a strong loin and a well-filled forechest. He stands on well-boned legs with tight, well-knuckled feet. Strong, broad quarters are complemented by low-set hocks. He moves with purpose and drive, remaining clean and true both fore and aft. All of this is topped off with a rich liver coat and ample feathering, completing an impressive picture. Delighted to award him the DCC and ultimately BIS – congratulations, I hear that this award gives him his crown.

2nd Place 58 - Forgespring Tomfoolery (Mrs C E & Mr P J Turrell)

23-month-old B&W dog, who truly needs to be hands-on to fully appreciate his qualities. He exemplifies moderation, nothing is overdone, and all is in proportion. His head is handsome and well-balanced, showing strength in the foreface and depth to the flews. His dark, almond-shaped eyes give him a melting expression. He has sufficient neck flowing into a firm topline, and is well developed in forechest and ribs, though just a fraction longer in loin. With strong, wide quarters, he secured his place over another pleasing youngster thanks to his free-flowing, effortless side gait.

1st Place 16 - Teignvalley New Beginnings JW ShCEx OSW (Mrs C Hill)

A masculine yet elegant two-year-old B&W dog with a shapely outline. He has a masculine refinement, compact, with well-balanced leg length that gives the slightly racy appearance desired. His head is well proportioned, complemented by a lovely dark eye. He has a nicely filled forechest and good depth, holding a firm topline that leads to wide quarters. He moves cleanly fore and aft, though not quite the reach and drive. Beautifully presented in a gleaming coat.

Class 9. Limit Dog. Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place 61 - More Than Amazing Wanna Be A Gangster at Spuffing JW (Imp Bel) (Mrs J Weyman)

An honest and sound 3-year-old LWT dog, nothing flashy or overdone in his construction. Masculine head, with strength to the backskull, but with a good length of foreface to balance, and the desired chiselling. His well-placed, low-set ears and dark eyes give a soft expression. Well developed through the body, with a good fill in of forechest and well-sprung ribcage. Held a firm topline both stood and on the move with a good tail carriage. Complimentary quarters with his front angulation. Moving with positive footfall, just not the joie de vivre in the final challenge

2nd Place 53 - Beresford Stand N' Stare JW (Mrs T E Topliss)

An eye-catching L&W dog approaching two years of age, upstanding and proud in demeanour, with elegant, flowing body lines. He has a lovely head, well-proportioned with good ratios, and a kind, dark, almond-shaped eye. His neck is of good length and leads into a well-filled forechest. The brisket reaches down to the elbow, with ribs carried well back. His topline is firm, though it tends to slope slightly on the move due to his eagerness. He has strong hindquarters with a good width of thigh. His side gait is lovely, showing reach and drive, slightly erratic behind today, he remains clean in front. Presented in excellent coat and condition.

3rd Place 46 - Peasblossom Brogan at Gaolachcara (Ms Stevenson)

Class 10. Open in Memory of Pam Wadsworth Dog. Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1st Place 65 - Sh Ch Pinereoch No Stunts Larrie (Ms L & Mrs A H Wilson & Connor)

This 4-year-old L&W dog presents a lovely, clean, flowing outline. I admired his overall size, shape, and substance. When standing, he shows excellent balance and unexaggerated symmetry. His head is quality, with good proportions, showing chiselling, and fluting. His dark, almond-shaped eyes give him a melting expression. He has a clean neck of good length with a slight arch, flowing smoothly into a firm, well-held topline. He is well developed in forechest and deep through the chest. His strong, wide hindquarters feature low-set hocks. On the move, he shows lovely drive and a fluid action, just a fraction close behind today, but clean and true in front. He is presented in first-class coat and condition and was certainly in contention for top awards.

2nd Place 57 - Beresford On My Way with Acregate (Miss J J Tracz)

This 4-year-old L&W dog has much appeal, with a happy-go-lucky nature that is instantly endearing. Slightly larger in mould than the winner, he is thoroughly masculine with an impressive outline. When standing, he flows smoothly and seamlessly from nose to tail. His masculine head is fairly broad with subtle rounding and displays good length and strength in the foreface, giving excellent balance. His toning eyes offer a gentle, slightly mischievous expression. He has a firm topline and strong loin, though his forechest is not quite as developed as the winner's. He stands on well-boned limbs and tight feet. Today, he seemed a little unsettled in his movement, but was certainly keen and showed plenty of drive.

Class 11. Champion in Memory of Jimmy Cudworth Dog. Entries: 3 Absentees: 1

1st Place 55 - Sh Ch Sandylands Stand N Deliver (Mrs T E Topliss)

A mature and upstanding five-year-old L&W dog who presents a pleasing outline when standing. He is full of quality and breed type, though of a different mould than my CC winner—yet both are very worthy examples. He has a handsome, well-proportioned headpiece with gentle rounding to the backskull and the right amount of work, giving the desired chiselling and fluting. His dark, almond-shaped eyes impart a soft expression. He has a good length of neck leading to a firm topline. The brisket is well let down, with a lovely forechest and ribs carried well back. His strong, hammy quarters show good width of thigh. He was a little excitable on the move today, at times losing his topline, but once settled, he showed reach, drive, and a flowing gait. Presented in full bloom. Delighted to award him RDCC and RBIS

2nd Place 8 - Sh Ch Elazlan Billy Kimber (Mrs C Darling)

A handsome and upstanding 6-year-old B&W dog. When standing, he is perfectly foursquare, with good length of leg and a shapely outline. His head is pleasing and well proportioned, showing the desired chiselling beneath the eyes and fluting. His dark eyes provide a lovely, soft expression. His neck and topline flow seamlessly together. He is well developed in forechest, with a good spring to the ribcage and ribs carried well back to a strong loin. He stands on strong boned limbs with tight, well-arched toes. There is good width to his quarters, slightly longer in hock. Today rather headstrong on the move, making him a fraction unsteady. Presented in a lovely coat and condition. I was pleased to award him Best Black & White in Show.

1st Place 24 - Pinhays Pie in The Sky (Mr C Kibby)

L&W dog approaching 2 years of age. When standing, this dog exhibits a lovely flow from neck to topline and displays good leg length. His head is well proportioned, with balanced length from backskull to foreface and strength in the muzzle. His eye is slightly light and round, he has beautifully feathered, low-set ears. He has a good length of neck, a well-let-down chest, and a decent spring of ribcage. Today, he was rather erratic on the move and tended to carry his tail high. He was sympathetically handled and demonstrated his happy demeanour.

Class 16. Minor Puppy Bitch Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1st Place 20 - Eastriding Gold Dust (Mrs K Jenkinson)

A very smart and promising 7-month-old L&W bitch who showed with confidence and displayed lovely balance when standing. Her head has good proportions, just needing time to fully finish. She has a good length of neck that flows into a firm topline and well-set tail. For her age, she possesses impressive depth of brisket and fill of forechest, with ribs carried well back to a short loin. She has harmonious angulation fore and aft, stands on moderately boned limbs and super-tight feet. On the move, she demonstrated a ground-covering, free, and flowing action, though she just needs to tighten in front.

Class 17. Puppy Bitch. Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place 3 - Calvdale Lizzie Stark (Mr & Mrs M Calvert)

Delightful 9-month-old L&W bitch, with a lovely outgoing nature to show herself off with confidence and style. She demonstrates remarkable maturity for her age and presents a pleasing, compact outline. She stands out for her harmonious proportions and corresponding angulation. Her pretty, well-balanced head has good length to the foreface, low-set ears, and eyes beginning to darken, all contributing to a soft expression. She has a good length of neck, excellent depth and development of forechest, ribs nicely sprung to a short loin, and a lovely rear assembly. A happy, ground-covering mover, just a touch close behind at present. Her coat and presentation are beautiful. A bright future ahead. I was delighted to award her BPIB.

2nd Place 2 - Calvdale Infinity (Mr & Mrs M Calvert)

Litter sister to the winner, and very much two peas in a pod, another super youngster. Today, I felt her sister had a slight edge in maturity and was a bit more settled on the move. She also displays balance, with good length of leg and depth, although she doesn't yet quite match her sister's forechest. She holds a firm topline and strong, wide hindquarters. Slightly more unsettled on the move today, so she had to settle for second place.

3rd Place 60 - Petranella Strike It Rich (Mrs P & Ms C P & Mr P W Wallis & Savell & Osbourne)

Class 18. Junior Bitch. Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1st Place 35 - Sieger's She's A Classic for Wythnick (Imp Dan) (Mr L & Miss A & Mrs D Nicklin & Bellamy & Nicklin)

A 16-month-old LWT bitch who presents a shapely and compact outline when stacked and standing foursquare. She has a pretty head with good proportions with sufficient work. Her eye is a pleasing almond shape with toning that contributes to her soft expression. While she still needs time to fully mature through the body, she already shows good depth and spring of ribcage, along with a short loin. I admired her wide, muscular quarters and bend of stifle, which she used effectively on the move to display reach and drive.

2nd Place 15 - Peasblossom Emotions with Teignvalley (Mrs C Hill)

Another very stylish 16-month-old, presented in a gleaming B&W jacket, with much to commend her. She is feminine throughout, with a pleasing, well-balanced head and good strength to the foreface. Her lovely dark eye gives a soft expression. She has a good length of neck flowing into a firm topline and is well developed in body, with depth and spring of ribcage—just a fraction longer in loin than the winner. She stands on beautifully boned limbs, has moderate hindquarters, and low-set hocks. On the move, she showed drive and enthusiasm.

Class 19. Yearling Bitch. Entries: 8 Absentees: 0

1st Place 14 - Annavah Ablaze (Miss L & Mrs P & Mrs A Havard & Havard & Corbett)

A very shapely 22-month-old L&W bitch who won this class for her impressive movement. She is of a pleasing overall size and distinctly feminine, just a touch longer in body and with a bit more rear angulation than my ideal; nevertheless, she has a beautiful flow to her outline. Her head is feminine and well balanced, with slight rounding of the backskull, a gentle stop, and a toning eye. She has a good length of neck flowing into a firm, well-held topline and tail set. Her ribcage shows a nice spring, and she stands on well-boned limbs with tight feet. It is on the move where she truly excels, displaying lovely width behind when moving away, and a clean, straight front with an excellent side gait.

2nd Place 54 - Beresford Stand On Ceremony JW (Mrs T E Topliss)

A more compact L&W bitch approaching 2 years of age. I admired her overall balance and proportions, which create a shapely outline. She has a lovely headpiece, nicely moulded with the desired chiselling and fluting, and a dark, almond-shaped eye that gives a gentle expression. Her clean neck flows seamlessly into a firm topline and a well-set, well-carried tail. She shows good spring of ribcage and a short, strong loin. Unfortunately, she was unsettled on the move, which made her untidy behind, but she was well presented and handled.

1st Place 38 - Forgespring Foolproof (Mrs V K Pattison)

Nearing her second birthday, she is a strikingly marked, unexaggerated BWT bitch, honest and balanced in her outline. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes give her a soulful expression. She has a clean, strong neck leading into a firm, level topline. I found her well developed in forechest, with good depth to the brisket and ribs carried well back. She used her strong, muscular quarters to cover the ground, and is nicely feathered to complete the picture.

2nd Place 9 - Dexbenella Believin Dreams at Derrindee (Miss D De Carteret)

20-month-old B&W bitch with a nicely proportioned outline when standing, presenting a compact, foursquare stance. She just needs time to finish maturing in her body. Her head is feminine, with rounding to the backskull, length and strength to the foreface, and dark, kind eyes. She has a good neck length, holding a firm topline, leading to well-developed thighs and a short hock-to-heel. Today, she was not as settled on the move as the winner.

1st Place 34 - Daenerys Girl On Fire at Dexbenella JW (Mr L E Nicklin)

I admired the overall type of this 23-month-old LWT bitch. She presents a compact profile, with good leg length contributing to a shapely silhouette. Her head is feminine, though not quite as detailed in work, but her expression is soft, thanks to her dark eyes. She has a good reach of neck with a slight arch, and is clean and straight in front, standing on nicely boned limbs and tight feet. Her ribs are deep and well sprung, leading to a short loin. There is strength in her hindquarters, with width through the thigh, a pleasing bend of stifle, and well-let-down hocks. She is a clean and tidy mover in all directions, showing reach and drive.

2nd Place 12 - Daenerys Winter Solstice at Fecimus (Mr J & Miss A Harrison & Macbain)

A smart and shapely 2-year-old L&W bitch, similar in type to the winner with her feminine construction. She has an appealing head, with chiselling under the eyes and fluting, low-set ears, and dark eyes. She doesn't quite match the winner for neck and forechest. She stands on nicely boned limbs and well-arched toes, and holds a firm topline both when standing and on the move. Her ribs show good depth and spring, with a short loin. I liked her wide, strong hindquarters, which she used effectively to drive around the ring.

An honest and workmanlike 4-year-old L&W bitch, nothing flashy, but she impresses with her sound construction and freedom of movement. She presents a balanced outline, with a pleasing flow through her neck and topline. Her head is pretty, with good proportions, the right amount of strength and depth to the muzzle, a kind, toning eye, and low-set, well-feathered ears framing her face. She has a clean neck leading into a decent forechest and depth to the brisket, though, to be picky, I would like a fraction more width in front. She stands on well-boned limbs and tight feet. Her strong, muscular hindquarters propel her around the ring with good head carriage and an easy, effortless stride.

2nd Place 37 - Crackerjanne Cassiopeia (Mrs V K Pattison)

A mature 5-year-old dark-saddled B&W bitch in a gleaming coat, very feminine and beautifully presented. She has a nicely balanced head, with slight rounding to the backskull and dark, almond shaped eyes. Her body is well developed, with a chest reaching down to the elbow and well filled in front. She has a good spring of ribcage, with ribs carried well back. She holds a firm topline both standing and on the move. On the move, she shows drive, though she is just a shade close going away.

There is much to admire in this 2-year-old L&W bitch, who is of a different stamp to the winner but equally deserving of her title. She has a lovely, elegant flow to her outline. I liked her balanced, feminine head shape and pleasing expression, though I would prefer a slightly darker eye. She possesses a good length of neck flowing into a firm topline, with decent depth and good spring of ribcage. She has lovely bone and tight, neat feet. She moved out purposefully with an effective side gait, though she was a fraction close behind today. Beautifully presented in full bloom.

She combines lovely bone, body, and substance with elegance and grace, giving her balanced, attractive body lines and a true four-square stance. Her head is feminine and well-proportioned, with strength to the foreface, nicely squared flews, and enough work to create a soft, gentle expression. She has a strong neck of good length, flowing into a firm, level topline and a short, strong loin, finishing with a well-set, well-carried tail. She is well developed throughout, with depth of chest and a nicely filled forechest. Her harmonious angulation fore and aft, together with wide quarters and a good bend of stifle. She stands on well-boned limbs and neat feet. She moves out purposefully with reach and drive, show good width going away. She lacked a little sparkle in the final challenges today. BCC & BOS

She has a pretty, feminine head that is well proportioned, with a good skull shape and the desired chiselling and fluting. Her dark almond eyes give a kind and gentle expression.
