Pennine Great Dane Club
Pennine Great Dane Club Championship Show
Ripon racecourse, Boroughbridge Road, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 1UG
20th September 2026.
I would like to thank the officers and committee of the Pennine Great Dane Club for inviting me to judge their Championship Show, and for the warm welcome and excellent hospitality extended to me throughout the day. My thanks also go to my stewards for keeping everything running so smoothly, and of course to all the exhibitors who entered under me and accepted my decisions so sportingly. It was a privilege and a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of my entry, with some excellent examples of the breed and particularly strong competition for the major awards. I was delighted with my principal winners, who combined the size, strength and substance required of a Great Dane with balance, elegance and sound, ground-covering movement. There were also some very promising youngsters coming through, which bodes well for the future of the breed.
There were, however, a few areas I feel breeders should continue to watch. Front construction and movement were variable, with some exhibits lacking reach or accuracy in front, while a few were less true behind. Eyes also deserve attention, particularly shape and tightness. I saw some variation in croups and toplines, and in a breed where overall balance is so important, these can significantly affect both the standing outline and movement. Bone and substance also need to be considered alongside elegance; neither should be achieved at the expense of the other. My preference throughout was for a balanced, unexaggerated Great Dane capable of moving freely and efficiently while retaining the strength, elegance and breed type called for in the Standard.
Class 1 Baby Puppy Dog (2/0)
1st 41 Mrs Anne & George Liddell - Keishant Achlys - Very promising brindle baby of just 5 months, masculine yet still appropriately immature. Pleasing head developing well, with good length of neck into a clean shoulder. Well grown with good bone and substance without appearing heavy. Particularly liked his overall balance and proportions, with a firm topline for his age and nicely developing hindquarters. Stood four-square naturally and presented a pleasing, coordinated outline. Moved confidently and soundly for such a youngster. A very promising baby with plenty of time on his side.
2nd 45 Mr & Mrs J Martin - Keishant Eros - Fawn litter brother to 1st and another substantial, well-grown baby with a masculine head, good bone and plenty of body for his age. He is the heavier and more powerful-looking of the two at present but, today, not quite as balanced or coordinated in outline as his brother. Still very much a baby and developing through his front and hindquarters, which affected his overall shape and movement. Nevertheless, there is plenty to like and I would expect him to change considerably as he grows and strengthens.
Class 2 Baby Puppy Bitch (1/0)
1st 73 Mr Simon, Mrs Victoria, Mrs Matilyn & Mr Paul Worsley - Malpa You Are My Only Hope - Very promising 4½-month-old fawn baby who immediately appealed for her balance and lovely clean outline. Feminine head with good length, dark mask and pleasing expression. Lovely reach of neck flowing cleanly into well-laid shoulders. Well grown with good bone and substance whilst retaining femininity. Pleasing body proportions, firm topline for one so young and well-developed hindquarters with good turn of stifle. Moved very well for her age, maintaining her balance and outline. A quality baby with much promise. Delighted to award her Best Baby Puppy in Show.

Class 3 Minor Puppy Dog (1/0)
1st 19 Mr & Mrs J H & Miss C Dyson Samdice One and Only - Very large, impressive 8-month-old fawn male with considerable quality and scope. Masculine head of good length, dark mask and pleasing expression. Good length of neck leading into a well-grown, substantial frame with excellent bone. Pleasing body proportions with good depth developing, firm topline and strong hindquarters. Still understandably immature through the front and needs time to fill and finish. Despite his size and age, he maintained a pleasing overall balance and moved soundly. A quality, promising youngster with much to like.
Class 4 Puppy Dog (2/0)
1st 38 Mr R Lawton & Mr I Farquharson Primus Walter Scott at Thronbrae - Very promising fawn puppy, masculine and substantial for his age whilst retaining elegance and balance. Strong, well-proportioned head with good length of muzzle, dark mask and pleasing expression. Good length of neck leading into a firm topline. Well developed through the forehand with good depth and breadth of chest for his age. Straight, strong forelegs with excellent bone and substance. Well-bodied youngster with strong, nicely angulated hindquarters and a pleasing overall outline. Moved freely and soundly with good reach and drive, maintaining his balance on the move. Still very much a baby with further development and maturity to come. A quality, masculine youngster with a very promising future.
2nd 37 Miss C Lawson Murrayvhayle Mines A Double for Droolakiss - Attractive brindle youngster with a particularly pleasing masculine head of good length, strong muzzle, dark eye and lovely expression. Long, clean neck and plenty of leg, presenting a pleasing outline in profile. Still very much a baby with further body and development to come. Unfortunately his front movement was quite untidy today and lacked the accuracy of my winner, which ultimately decided the placings. Nevertheless, a promising youngster with many pleasing breed qualities.
Class 5 Junior Dog (4/0)
A very interesting class, with both 1st and 2nd being quality exhibits for different reasons. There was a lot to like about both of them and I believe both have bright futures.

Masculine yet elegant youngster presenting a clean, balanced outline. Pleasing masculine head with good length and strong muzzle, lovely dark, well-shaped eye. Good length of neck flowing into a firm topline. Good depth of chest for his age with a pleasing forechest. Straight, well-boned front with balanced angulation and strong quarters. Still very much a youngster with further maturity to come. His tighter, better-shaped eye was one of the deciding factors in a good class.
2nd 14 - Mrs M Cubitt Zefather’s Wreck It Ralph - 16-month-old brindle dog of good size and substance, masculine throughout with a strong, pleasing head and good length of muzzle. Lovely length of neck, good depth of chest and well-developed body for his age. Strong, well-boned legs with pleasing hindquarters and a balanced outline. A quality youngster with much to like. Firm through the topline, although I would prefer a little more strength and width through the croup. Well-angulated hindquarters with good length of second thigh. Stood on good feet. A quality male who pushed my winner hard; today I preferred the slightly more harmonious and finished overall picture of the CC winner. Delighted to award him the Reserve CC.
