I always look forward to judging Borzoi, and my appointment at Birmingham City was no exception.
I was pleased with both the numbers entered and the overall quality of my winners, which included several particularly fine examples of the breed.
Unfortunately, there remains a lack of consistency in style and type among Borzoi currently appearing in the show ring, with considerable variation from the traditional ‘English Type’ that was more prevalent in years gone-by. While a number of individual dogs and bitches possess commendable attributes, relatively few combined sound conformations with the essential breed characteristics and unmistakable elegance expected of a Borzoi. Ear set and size were among the features in which this inconsistency was particularly evident.
Several recurring conformational weaknesses deserve attention. These included upright fronts, insufficient fore-chest, slab-sided bodies, front feet not conforming with the breed standard, flat feet, lack of thick pads, low-set and overly large ears, excessively narrow muzzles, and narrow underjaws resulting in pinched dentition.
Correct feet are fundamental to the breed's function and should be carefully considered. Long front feet lacking the required knuckling, together with rear feet that were too short, were seen all too frequently.
Condition and presentation also require greater attention. A lack of muscle tone was evident in too many exhibits, while dirty teeth and untrimmed nails were disappointingly commonplace. Such shortcomings should not be apparent in dogs presented in the show ring.
I sincerely thank all exhibitors for their valued support. My observations and individual critiques are offered as constructive criticism, with the shared aim of preserving and improving the soundness, quality and distinctive character of this noble breed.
Class 876 SBD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1710 UMFREVILLE, Mr Chris Barnesmore Betelgeuse At Voyshka an imposing, substantial 6-year-old gold male who has a particularly attractive head and expression although could be improved with more obvious veining. Pleasing front both in width and parallel legs. Full-bodied with a firm, graceful topline and moderate good width hindquarters and was the better mover
2nd: 1702 PRICE, Miss E Asterion Silent Enigma (bd2) a 12-month-old finely built male. Slender all through needing to body-up and mature in ribbing both in spring and depth. Lean in head and in overall appearance. Long in hindquarters and lacking definite angulation. Unsettled both standing and moving.
Class 877 VD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1689 JOHNSON, Miss C M Viridis Pink Floyd a sizeable 7-year-old upstanding male in good enough coat. Pleasing head both in shape and proportions. True front although more upright than I would prefer. Sturdy in body cover. Well angled, reachy hindquarters needing to strengthen. Front feet are well arched but long and lacking thick pads and stained. Needs to extend, drive and settle on the move.
Class 878 PD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1699 ODELL, Miss Y Sukeshi Dance With Another a well-grown 9-month-old self-white, well-made young male who has desirable bone and body development for one of his age. Stands soundly and firmly over the ground. He has a pleasing foundation structure which is necessary for him to grow-on and mature into a quality adult male. Attractive head of pleasing proportions both in length and width giving him a quality look. Moved free, well and true. One who has exciting promise. Best Puppy in Breed.
2nd: 1675 BIRMINGHAM, Mr Mark Andrew Sukeshi Shadow Dance For Takatori who I note is litter brother to 1st and shares many of the qualities mentioned previously. He has a particularly attractive head. Well-made in front, body and hindquarters sharing his brother’s desirable bone and body development. Not as controlled on the move as 1st.
3rd: 1697 MULLIS, Mrs Suzanne Menigma Rey's Raining Fire one that deserves comment; he is well grown with pleasing bone and body development. Very attractive head shape and proportions which with more evident veining would complete the picture. Needs to settle both standing and moving with both handler and puppy needing more schooling to give of their best.
Class 879 JD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1679 DAWSON, Mr Nigel & DAWSON, Mrs Elizabeth & DAWSON, Stubbylee Boom Like That JW a shapely 15-month-old youthful male who has an attractive side profile. His head is long and lean and displaying pleasing breed characteristics. He has a true front, although I would prefer a more evident forechest. He could be tighter in forequarters which should improve with maturity. Shapely in topline and body with just enough oval cut to the ribcage. He has all the essentials to mature into a quality adult. At present he appears somewhat leggy and long through the hindquarters, reflecting his stage of development. On the move, he tended to prance in front and needs to settle and move forward with extension and more width behind. One who has plenty of promise for future success in the show ring. 2nd: 1702 PRICE, Miss E Asterion Silent Enigma (bd2) as previous comments
Class 880 PGD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1710 UMFREVILLE, Mr Chris Barnesmore Betelgeuse At Voyshka as previous comments
2nd: 1695 EDWARDS, Mr Nicholas & EDWARDS, Mrs Pamela Go Go Bolshoi Adonis (imp Hun) an elegant two-year-old with an attractive, refined head. He tended to stand rather narrow in front and would benefit from slightly more spring of rib. He carried a pleasing amount of body and was presented in impressively fit condition, with firm muscle tone. I would prefer greater depth of chest, which may improve with maturity and more definite angulation behind. On the move, his action needs to be more controlled and settled.
Class 881 LD (6 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1686 HARVEY, Mrs L Lynx Tell A Tale Of Albaneiler (imp Swe) an impressive 2-year-old red & white male who is all in proportion and balanced presenting a very satisfying appearance viewed from all angles. He has an excellent head which is of ideal shape and proportions with desired veining and breed characteristics. Distinguished breed typical expression. He has a side profile which is of correct proportions, balanced in angulation front/rear with a refreshing graceful top line. Pleasing length in neck, powerful body and strong moderately angled hindquarters. He has firm substance and pleasing muscle tone. He is still young and future maturity and improvement to look forward to. Presented in excellent good length coat and commendable condition. True, controlled front movement and good width, driving rear action with particularly impressive side gait. Pleased to be told this was his crowning CC. My Dog CC and Best of Breed winner.
2nd: 1674 BIRMINGHAM, Mr Mark Andrew Takatori Barnum a mature, sizeable 4½-year-old male in good coat with plenty of substance and pleasing overall proportions and balance. Attractive in head, with good shape, proportions and a pleasing expression. True in front, although he tended to stand rather wide and could be tighter through the elbows. Sturdy and well made in body, with strong, moderately angulated hindquarters. Overall, he presents a satisfying picture. On the move, he tended to move wide in front and needing more forward extension.

Very attractive in head, which is of notable shape and proportion, with a distinguished expression. His head is carried on a strong neck of good length. Pleasingly true in front, with satisfactory width across the chest. Firm and well made through the body, with mature depth, complemented by strong, moderately angulated hindquarters. Class 884 SBB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1703 PRICE, Miss E Paskova Butterfly Naf a finely constructed 15-month-old bitch having a feminine, lean head of acceptable proportions, although I would prefer a better shaped eye. True enough in front, but she tended to stand rather upright and narrow. Lightly built throughout the body, where a more oval cut to the ribcage and greater substance would be desirable. Graceful in topline, with long, moderately angulated hindquarters. She was unsettled and needs to move with greater width and more forward controlled action.
Class 885 VB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1677 DAWSON, Mr Nigel & DAWSON, Mrs Elizabeth & DAWSON, Ch Metel Avgusta Ala Azul At Stubbylee (Imp Rus) JW an elegant, shapely and well-proportioned 7¾-year-old self-black bitch who is pleasing in overall construction and maturity. Attractive in head, with a desirable breed typical expression. True and parallel in front, with desirable spring and length of ribbing. Her graceful topline completed a balanced and satisfying outline. She moved with true, positive action and pleasing forward extension.

1st: 1698 ODELL, Miss Y Sukeshi See The Fire an attractive, predominantly white 9-month-old bitch, litter sister to the male Puppy winner. She has pleasing bone and body and is well grown for her age. Attractive in head, unmistakably feminine and displaying good breed qualities. Pleasing in front and forequarters, with good feet, satisfactory body development and well-boned, moderately angulated hindquarters. She displayed typical puppy movement but was the better mover in the class. A very promising youngster.
2nd: 1712 WEBB, Mrs Karen Mischran Bryonia A finely constructed 11-month-old white and red bitch having a refined, feminine head of good proportions, although I would prefer a more almond-shaped eye. True enough in front, but she tended to stand rather upright and narrow. Lightly built through the body, where a more oval cut to the ribcage would be desirable. Graceful in topline, with moderately angulated hindquarters. She needs to tighten throughout, both standing and moving, and I would prefer greater width and extension on the move.

1st: 1703 PRICE, Miss E Paskova Butterfly Naf as previous comments.
Class 888 PGB (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1680 DERRICK, Mrs Julie Jansams Cosmopolitan (a.i.) a shapely 2-year-old self-white bitch who is well proportioned in profile. Pleasing in head which is refined and of good shape, with pleasing eyes and ears, which I preferred to those of 2nd. True in front, although a little upright. Satisfactory through the body, with moderately angulated hindquarters. She presented the better standing profile and was also the better mover of the class.
2nd: 1692 LU, Mr Xinyu Farisa Fiodorowna Insania Barsoi (Imp Pol) another 2-year-old of similar colour and appearance to 1st. Lean feminine head but ears tended to be low set. Pleasing length of body but would prefer a more pronounced graceful topline. Front is true enough and she appears to have good depth of chest for her age. Poor and unsettled on the move.
Class 889 LB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1676 CATILINA, Mrs Lisa & CATILINA, Mr Dinu Borscana Solglimt At Dofro (imp Swe) an attractively marked white and red 2-year-old bitch of lovely make and shape. She has an attractive, refined head, which I preferred to that of 2nd, and displays undeniable breed quality. Elegant in overall outline, with a graceful neck and topline, a well-made body and moderately angulated hindquarters. She stands on tight, well-arched feet and was presented in pleasing condition, carrying sufficient coat to show herself to advantage. She was the better mover in the class.
2nd: 1684 HALL, Mrs R Jansams Bloody Mary JW a 2-year-old white/black shapely bitch. She is beautifully proportioned and balanced in side profile. Would prefer a more refined head which would complement her overall appearance. She has a good length of neck, true front of pleasing width, shapely body but for me would be the better with less body cover especially over her loin. Good width moderate hindquarters. Free moving although closer in action than I prefer..
