Border Union Championship Show June 2026

Thank you to the Committee of Border Union for the opportunity to Judge at this show. Border Union has long been a favourite venue of ours, this year though unfortunately the weather didn’t play ball and the strong winds and cold definitely affected some exhibits more than others.

On the whole most exhibits were well presented but there are a couple of concerns. Firstly teeth, there were several instances of relatively young exhibits with dirty teeth. Secondly several exhibits were underweight with one in particular being very underweight.

1st Mrs S Morrell Melangel Unforgettable for Temelora 10 Month old R/S/W He has a good outline in profile, nice length of neck, level topline with a good tailset, tail is well plumed and carried correctly over the back. He has a nice head, large well placed ears with good fringing coming. In good coat of correct texture. Nice head and dark eyes, hare feet. He moves well both coming and going.

2nd Dr M L & Dr E A Griffiths Melangel Ultrasonic to Manawyddan10 months R/W Very similar to one and comments apply to both, came down to first being more settled on the move.

16 Months R/S/W He has a nice head, good dark eyes, large mobile well fringed ears well set. He has a good coat, level topline and nicely arched tail. He moved freely around the ring. Well presented and handled.

2nd Mr M G & Mrs E Davidson Northlyte Silver Surfer

16 Months B/W He has a very good head with well set ears nicely fringed and dark eyes. Good length of neck, level topline, well plumed tail carried correctly over the back, in good coat. Moved well when settled.

3rd Mrs J D & Mr C J Mowatt Iotastar Spirit of The North

1st Ms V Fenn Webber Tarnock Pocket Scotch JW

B/W He presents a good picture when both standing and moving around the ring. He has a nice head, good stop, darke eyes, large well place ears nicely fringed. Good length of neck into a level topline, well set tail carried correctly over the back. He is in good coat. Moves freely around the ring.

2nd Mrs M & Mrs C & Mrs S Mann & Mann & Morrell Braunswood Mask of Zorro by Melangel

R/S/W Another with a good outline when standing. Large well set ears with good fringing, good stop and dark eyes. Nice reach of neck, level topline, nicely plumed tail carried correctly over the back. In good coat. Preferred the movement of 1.

On its own, R/S/W 2 years old. Has a nice overall shape, good head, dark eyes, large well fringed ears and is in good coat. Level topline, well plumed tail. Moved well.

Tri, Nice head, good stop, dark eyes. Ears well placed and with good fringing. Coat of correct texture, well set tail carried correctly over the back.

3 Years old R/W, Has a nice head and ears, nice dark eye, good length of neck, level topline. Moved ok both coming and going.

Tri, He has a well shaped head with large, well set, mobile ears with good fringing. Dark eyes and good pigmentation. Nice reach of neck into a level topline, well plumed tail carried correctly. He has profuse frill and is in good coat and condition. Moves well around the ring. Well presented.

2nd Lady J & Mrs S & Mrs S Thompson & Austin & Stanbury Inixia Glamour Boy at Jhanakia

B/W He has a nice outline when viewed in profile. Well shaped head, dark eyes, large ears with good fringing. Neck of medium length in to a level topline. Tail caried arched over the back with good plume. Moved well.

1st Mr D & Mrs K Carter Graycaz On A Mission JW

This R/S/W dog asks to be looked at. Standing, in profile, he presents the picture of an elegant Papillon, well balanced with a good length of neck in to a level topline and well carried tail. He has a good head and ears that are well fringed. Nice stop and dark eyes. He has a coat of the correct texture and moves soundly around the ring. Presented in excellent condition and well handled. 2nd Ms D Olof Ch Tarnock Wiggle Giggle JW

B/W Another who in profile has a very pleasing outline. He has a very good head, nice dark eye, large ears well fringed. Medium length of neck in to a good topline, nice tailset well plumed. Coat of correct texture, he has a profuse frill and breeches. Moved soundly around the ring. RDCC

11 Years old and doesn’t show it when he moves around the ring. He has a good head, stop and dark eyes. and large well fringed ears. Good length of neck, topline and tail. He is in good coat which is of the correct texture and nice hare feet. Well handled. Best Veteran

9 Years old R/S/W Another quality dog well presented and handled. In good coat and condition, he has a lovely head and expression. Nice ears, good length of neck, level topline, he presents a picture of a well balanced, sound dog.

8 Months old Tri She is smaller in size but everything is in proportion, straight front and hare feet, In good coat for age. Lovely head and expression. Large well set ears with fringing coming, good stop and dark eyes. Medium length of neck into a level topline, would prefer the tail to be arched higher over the back. Moved well around the ring once settled. Best Puppy

6 Months old R/S/W She has a pretty head and expression, nice dark eyes, large ears with fringing coming. Good topline, tail nicely arched over the back and the promise of a good coat. A little unsettled on the move.

9 Months old R/W Fine and dainty she has a good head and expression, large well placed ears with fringing coming. Good topline held on the move. Moved well both coming and going. Promise a good coat.

2nd Ms D Olof Keomandi’s Sweet Dreams among Tarnock’s

 9 Months old S/W She has a nice head and dark eyes. Ears are a little lower set. She is in good coat with a level topline. For me she is a little shorter in leg giving the impression of a longer body which spoils the outline when viewed in profile. Moved exuberantly around the ring.

R/W Another fine and dainty girl. Well balanced she has sweet head and expression. Ears well set, good length of neck in to a level topline, well fringed tail carried correctly over the back. Good front and correct feet. Moved well both coming and going.

Tri Similar in shape and style to 1, and similar remarks apply, Very pretty head and expression. Moved with drive around the ring. These two could change places at any other time.

R/S/W A lot to like about this girl. She has a good head, stop, earset and dark eyes. Straight front, neck of medium length in to a level topline, carries her well plumed tail nicely over the back. She moves soundly around the ring. Enough coat, she present a lovely picture when viewed in profile.

B/W She has a very pretty head and expression, large well set ears with good fringing, well plumed tail carried correctly over the back. Moved well around the ring.

What can I add to the many critiques that these two exhibits have had. They are both outstanding examples of the Breed and are a credit to all concerned. For me, it comes down to individual interpretation when comparing both to the RKC Breed standard and in this instance it was the overall outline, balance and movement of one that tipped the scales.
