The Tibetan Spaniel Association – Open Show – 5 April 2026 – Judge: Derfel Owen

My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge, exhibitors for a generous entry and super efficient stewards for keeping me on track. I very much enjoyed judging this show, there was a lot of quality to go over, temperaments were very good on the whole and dogs were in excellent condition. A broad variation in head types and overall size made some classes very challenging to separate.

Excellent way to start the day. 3 very typical exhibits in good health and all sound and showing off their qualities with confidence.

1st 26 - COOPER & O’BRIEN’S CH SUSU PRINCESS SPICE PARTI JW VW W17

10yrs. Small and typical shape, lovely head with slight dome and high set ears. Dark and almond shaped eye, medium length neck leading to well laid shoulder, level topline and high set tail. Moved with real positivity and freedom in action. Best Special Vintage in Show

2nd 56 – SHORT’S CH MALIA YUAN ZHI JW

14yrs. Another very sound and well-built bitch, moved very confidently with clean action in front and rear. Good spring of rib, and correct overall proportions. Liked her head, eye and expression, well set ears.

8yrs. Nicely balanced, correct for size and proportions. Typical head and expression, dark and oval shaped eye with black rims. Moderate length of neck, well laid shoulder, high set tail and well angulated hindquarters. Good spring of rib. Moved with positivity and style.

2nd 80 – WATKINS’ AMCROSS PARTI PUZZLE

9yrs. A tad longer in outline. Nice head with moderate dome, well set ears. Eyes a bit too large and round for typical expression. Moderate length of neck, correctly set tail with good plume. Moved well.

1st 73 – TYLER’S CHELMERSS LOVE ACTUALLY VIA MULLTYE

8mths. Good bone and overall balance. Nicely maturing in head with dark and expressive eyes, medium length neck and well laid shoulders, lovely topline that she retained on the move. High set tail, carried correctly. Good harefeet. Moved with positivity and drive.

2nd 40 – HORTON, HORTON & LEMON’S PARLOUEVE SHOW ME LOVE

7mths. A little large for a minor puppy. Well balanced overall, liked her head, moderate dome and well set and carried ears, level topline, quick stepping and positive on the move.

1st 61 – SIMPER & SCOATES’ CLYDUM MIGHTY MAGIC

11mths. Excellent balance and well-proportioned bitch. Nicely maturing in head with moderate dome and high set ears that she carried well. She has the most delightful dark eye and expression. Moderate neck, leading to well laid shoulders and an excellent front with just slight bow, elbows held tightly to her well sprung chest. Level topline, high set tail with good plume and very nice skirt. Well angulated hindquarters. Moved with typical action, very full of herself. BPB & BPIS

13mths. Nicely proportioned bitch, maturer than others in the class. Nice head with moderate dome and well-set ears that she used well, medium length of neck. Good spring of rib of sufficient length and a strong loin. Strong and level topline. Moved positively, very sound. Well-set and carried tail.

2nd 57 – SHORT’S MALIA ZAYA

16mths. Good for size and balance. Nicely domed skull, although I would prefer a touch more length to muzzle. Well-angulated in front and rear with good length of rib, level topline, high set and well carried tail. Moves soundly.

11mths. Very sound and well-constructed bitch, correct for size and overall proportions. Nicely developing head with dark and expressive eyes. Carries her ears perfectly. Medium length of neck, very good front, with well laid shoulders. Slightly bowed front held tightly against her well sprung ribs. Level topline, high set tail. Moved with typical action.

2nd 14 – BROOKS’ MULLTYE PO SO CAN

2 ½yrs. Liked her head proportions, eye and earset, would prefer a bit more width to her underjaw. Medium length neck, well laid shoulder, good spring of rib. Rounded a little over the croup so tailset was a bit low. Moved with quick action and was clean coming and going.

A bit unsettled on the move, but when she does go she is sound and well-built, with typical action. Well-developed head, with moderate dome, well set and carried ears, medium length neck. Well laid shoulders, harefeet. Level topline, high set tail.

2yrs. Won the class as I preferred her head proportions, eye and expression. Nicely boned and proportioned, would prefer a slightly shorter loin. Level topline with well carried tail. Coat in good condition with good feathering. Harefeet. Moved with typical action.

2nd 67 – STEVENS & MCKNIGHT’S MULLAGH MY IRISH IVY AT TIBBYGOLD (IKC)

3yrs. Her head is nicely shaped and balanced, with dark, oval and expressive eyes. Well laid shoulder but a bit too narrow in front. Moved with quick stepping and sound action.

4yrs. Larger, liked her head very much, well set ears, but would prefer them a bit smaller. Medium length neck. Well laid shoulder, moved with style and confidence. Level topline, high set tail, well carried with good plume and feathering on her skirt.

3 ½yrs. Very sound and balanced overall. Preferred the more feminine head of 1. But she has a good expression, dark and oval eyes, well set medium sized ears. Lovel topline that she retained on the move. High set and well carried tail with good plume and feathering.

9yrs. Another masculine dog, though a bit more of him than 1. Strong, medium length neck, Good topline, well set tail, well feathered rear and plume on tail. Harefeet, full of energy, he moved well with typical action.

7mths. Full of energy and character, lovely to see him enjoying himself and full of inquisitiveness. Nicely proportioned head, slightly domed skull, dark, oval shaped eyes. When settled, he moved with confidence.

15mths. Determined to play his owner up on the move, but when he settled, he moved well with typical action. He is good for size and overall balance, just longer than height at withers. Liked his head, typical expression from dark and oval shaped eyes. Medium length of neck, well laid shoulders, level topline, high set tail.

2nd 5 – BEVIS’ LACORAL DUKE OF YORK AT STARLANCE

16mths. Very sound and well-constructed, with quite a lot of him to appreciate. His head is well balanced, with dark and expressive eyes, well set ears. Well laid shoulders and level topline. Moved with style.

21mths. Very nicely balanced, correct for size and overall shape. Masculine, with enough head, slightly domed skull, and lovely dark, medium sized and oval shaped eyes with black rims. Correctly set and carried ears, really added to his expression. Level topline, high set and well carried tail. Well angulated hindquarters and moved with typical action.

2nd 20 – COLLINS’ SUSU BANANAPARTI BOAT AT TEPHITI

18mths. Nice, dark and expressive eyes, well set ears with good feathering. A bit narrow in front, has good length of rib, level topline, high set tail. Well angulated hindquarters. Just preferring the balanced skull of 1.

2yrs. Liked his head and skull proportions, sufficient stop, dark and expressive eyes, though I would prefer a stronger chin. High set and well carried ears, moderate dome to skull. Medium length neck, well laid shoulders, level topline, high set tail, well angulated hindquarters. Coat in excellent condition with good feathering on ears and hindquarters and typical mane. Harefeet.

2nd 16 – CLOSE’S VELROK ROYAL GOLD WITH ARIKARA

3 ½yrs. Preferable for size to others in the class but I preferred the quality of head of 1. Dark eyes, although a bit too round, but medium sized. Skull a bit too domed, but good length of muzzle with sufficient cushioning, Level topline, high set tail, well angulated hindquarters. Harefeet.

3 ½yrs. Most typical and ideal for size and shape; sound and well-constructed. Moved with typical quick stepping gait, with good drive. Coat in good condition, with correct feathering. Skull a tad broad, but moderate dome, high set ears, dark and medium sized, oval eyes. Medium length neck. High set tail. Well angulated rear. Neat and bowed front. Sufficient length of muzzle and cushioning.

2nd 48 – O’CONNOR’S MAILA WINTER SPICE WITH TALISTELLA JW

2yrs. Nicely proportioned and sound, with good angulations, Good overall proportions, though maybe I’d shave a bit off his loin. Needs more substance and body. Liked his muzzle, and width of chin. Excellent feet, well angulated in front and rear. Moved with quickstepping action. Clean coming and going.

3yrs. What a star. Masculine, with a lovely, typical head and expression; dark, oval shaped eye, black rim, medium length neck carrying head proudly. Well sprung rib, reaching well back, level topline, strong loin, high set tail, that he carries correctly. Good bone and substance without being coarse. Decent feet. He moved with confidence and typical action, it was a pleasure to watch him owning the ring. BB & BIS

2nd 17 – COLACO & BROWN’S CH SAXTEAD NORBU

4yrs. Another top quality male, liked him a lot, however I preferred the energy and positivity of 1 on the move. Nicely balanced, masculine head with slightly domed skull, and high set ears that he uses well to frame a delightful expression, would prefer eyes a bit darker. Strong body, well laid shoulder, level topline, high set tail. Moved with positivity and quick stepping gait. RBD & RBIS
