The Midland Boxer Club – Open Show – 14 February 2026

My thanks to the committee of the Midland Boxer Club for the honour of being invited to judge at your Open Show, you gave a very friendly and warm welcome; also to my brilliant stewards for keeping me on track and to the exhibitors for a generous entry and sporting behaviour. Overall, I found the dogs to be in great condition, temperaments were very good overall, and I was very pleased with my main winners, and some of the lovely, promising puppies coming through in both the Baby and regular Puppy classes. Movement was a bit of a challenge, with many exhibits being too close or even platting in front and rear, made for some compromised decisions balancing breed type against soundness construction. As often the case with breeds requiring a “square” outline, this was harder to find consistently in bitches than in dogs.

1st 10 – BROWN & HUTCHINGS’ WINUWUK AIN’T NO SUNSHINE

Up to size for almost 6 months, but well constructed, with good bone, and moving soundly. Good strong topline with good length of rib and well sprung chest. Short and strong loin. Nicely developing head and skull, dark eyes, well set ears. Strong neck. High set tail.

2nd 60 – SPENCER’S ASHRONSHA MR LOVER LOVER

5mths.Younger and needs more time to settle. Good shape, strong back, with slight slope but the top line softened slightly when moving; this should settle with age. High set tail and good rear angulation. Moved with good reach in front but a bit close behind.

1st 11 - BROWN & HUTCHINGS’ WINUWUK AIN’T NO SUNSHINE

6mths. Nicely proportioned bitch, well balanced head with correct muzzle to skull proportions. Dark eye, strong and nicely arched neck, well laid shoulder, good topline, with slight slope, well sprung ribs and good depth of chest. Was excitable on the move which is infinitely forgivably for a puppy, but when settled she was clean and had good reach. Best Baby Puppy in Show.

2nd 61 – SPENCER’S ASHRONSHA DOLLY MY LOVE

5mths. Promising bitch with good body proportions. Head developing nicely, dark and expressive eyes. Topline tended to soften a little. Reached out well in front when moving but needs to strengthen in rear. High set tail, very animated.

3rd 57 – SAAFAN’S GEOVANIC MAKE ME BLUSH

1st 18 – GODWIN’S SULTASH CUNCO

9yrs. Noble, well balanced overall and masculine. Nicely laid shoulder and upper arm, strong topline and loin, well sprung rib, high set tail. Good rear angulation. Tight cat like feet. Good underline. Would prefer a bit more muzzle to finish off his head.

1st 52 – PEARCE & FRANCIS’SLONGSDALE MYSTICAL MAGICAL

Nicely balanced and put together for a 6-month-old. Medium sized and square, good strong topline, straight with a slight slope, high set and well carried tail. Lovely eye and expression, correct head proportions with a deep stop. Moved well when settled.

2nd 6 – BROUGH’S LIMUBOX UP YER KILT

6mths. Heavier for a minor puppy. Good topline, with slight slope, would prefer a bit more length of rib. Well-developed head, with defined stop. Well angulated, moved soundly.

Very well-developed male, 10 months. Nicely proportioned head, with defined stop and good under jaw. Strong and elegant neck. Well laid shoulder, strong, short back and loin with ribs reaching well back. High set tail. Moved exceptionally well in profile covering the ground powerfully and with good reach. BPD & BPIS

2nd 12 – CATLING’S LOTTALOVE NORDIC GYPSY KING

11mths. Nicely balanced head, dark and expressive eyes, ears well set and used to good effect. Good tight, cat-like feet.

1st 48 – PAYNE’S WILLOW EYE OF THE TIGER (IKC)

18mths. Very nicely balanced, square and masculine dog. Sound and moved very well, clean coming and going and covering the ground powerfully and with good reach. Dark and expressive eyes. Good muzzle, with under jaw and clean lips. Skull lean. Nicely arched neck leading to well laid shoulder. Good strong topline, short and slightly sloping, well sprung ribs reaching well back. Well angulated hindquarters, well set tail.

2nd 67 – RENSHAW-TURNER & TURNER’S NEWLAITHE NORTHERN SOUL AT SONSHOY

12mths. Another nicely balanced male, winner had a cleaner action in front. Well-proportioned head and muzzle, dark and expressive eyes. Nice strong topline, with well-set tail.

Strong topline, slightly sloping, good depth of chest and ribs reaching well back. High set tail. Well angulated hindquarters giving him drive on the move, covering the ground powerfully and with good reach in front. RBD

18mths. Nicely balanced head and muzzle, lean skull, defined stop and good rise over the skull. Well set ears. Strong neck. Nicely boned, straight front, short and strong pasterns, straight back, correct depth of chest with good spring of rib, would prefer them to reach back a little further. Moved very well in profile covering the ground well with good reach in front.

3 ½yrs. Defined stop, with good rise of skull, dark and expressive eyes, good strong under jaw with sufficient turn up. Strong neck, well laid shoulder. Straight back with slight slope, but a bit too much loin for balance. High set tail. Nicely angulated hindquarters. Moved well coming and going and covered the ground with power and good reach in front.

2 ½yrs. Dark and expressive eyes, Good strong underjaw, correctly proportioned skull and muzzle, well defined stop with good rise of skull, ears well set. Strong and nicely arched neck. Well laid shoulder, straight front with strong and short pasterns, small and cat like feet. Correct depth of chest with sufficient tuck up, well sprung ribs, straight and slightly sloping back. Tail well set. Moved very well, clean coming and going. BD & BIS

5 ½yrs. Strong and masculine, typical head and expression, good reach of neck. Well laid shoulder. Feet too long and flat. Straight back, but I’d prefer if the ribs reached a bit further back. Well set tail, well angulated. Moved with power and good reach in front.

7yrs. Nicely balanced head, sufficiently length of muzzle, black nose, dark and expressive eyes. Lean skull, elegantly arched neck, well laid shoulders. Strong topline, deep chest, well sprung rib, high set tail, good rear angulation. Not as tidy coming and going, but in profile she covers the ground well. BVIS

2nd 59 – SPENCER’S ASHRONSHA WILEST DREAMS

Preferred the more balance and typical head of 1. Nicely balanced and feminine overall. Good front with strong pasterns. Straight back, good spring of rib, well angulated hindquarters, moved well.

8mths. Nicely balanced overall, and definitely more mature than her classmates. Nicely balanced head and muzzle, dark eye. Nicely arched neck, good length of rib and well sprung chest, straight back, but a bit too long in loin. Moved best coming and going and retained her topline on the move, nicely angulated hindquarters, clean underline. Well set ears. BPB & RBPIS

2nd 42 – MAIR’S LONGSDALE STORMY LOVERS AT GLENAULD

7mths. Nice head and balance overall, again a bit long cast at the moment and her loin arched on the move which really affected her outline. Lovely head and expression, nicely balanced muzzle and skull, dark and expressive eye.

10mths. Nicely balanced skull and muzzle. Small and tight feet, well laid shoulder, topline arched a little over the loin, settled when on the move, well set tail. Moved well in profile, a little untidy in front coming toward, but sound in rear.

2nd 28 – JONES, JONES & JAMES’ WINUWUK KISS ME QUICK AT CHARLONS

9mths. Nicely developing head. Balanced overall, correct proportions of skull to muzzle, good underjaw. She was quite distracted in the ring and her rear movement quite unsettled, but this was probably down to enthusiasm. Good depth of chest and good length of rib. Nicely angulated hindquarters.

12mths. Correct proportions of muzzle to skull. Defined stop, good rise of skull, lean skull, strong and elegantly arched neck, well laid shoulder, straight back, good depth of rib and correct length, strong loin, well angulated hindquarters. Moved with good drive behind, and reach in profile.

2nd 66 – WELCH’S NEWLAITHE BRIDGET JONES WITH TREJU

12mths. Nicely balanced and proportioned overall. Feminine and typical head and skull. Straight back, but the slope was a bit exaggerated. Good depth of chest and spring of rib, short loin, high set tail. Moved stylishly, sound and purposeful with good reach.

18mths. Defined stop, good rise over the skull, well set ears, dark and expressive eyes, strong and elegantly arched neck. Straight front, strong pasterns, tight, small and cat like feet. Good depth of chest and spring of rib, but she could be stronger in loin. High set tail, good angulation.

2nd 46 – PARKER & MARTIN’S OLLEYVILLE JULIETT

18mths. Better for size and femininity but her topline softened on the move which affected her outline. Defined stop. Good rise over skull, clean skull, well laid shoulder. Short loin, high set tail. Good angulation. Moved well in profile.

18mths. Nicely balanced skull and muzzle, dark and expressive eyes. Nicely arched neck, flowing into well laid shoulders. Straight and slightly sloping back. Good depth and length of ribcage creating a nice and unexaggerated underline. Strong loin. High set tail. Well angulated hindquarters. A little long overall.

2nd 33 – KELLY’S CASEMATES WITCH TIME

15mths. Nicely balanced good clean skull. Nicely arched neck. Straight topline, a little long in loin, and tail a bit low set. Well angulated hindquarters, moved well in profile.

Nicely arched and elegant neck, well laid shoulders, strong topline, slight slope, well angulated hindquarters. Good depth of chest and well sprung. Hocks could be stronger, cat like feet. A little over extended in rear.

2nd 35 – LAW’S SHELLARK HANDBALL HATTIE

Almost 2yrs. Too long in body and loin for balance. Nicely balanced skull with good underjaw. Neck arched, straight back with slight slope, high set tail, exaggerated hindquarters. Short and strong pasterns. Feet a bit long but tight. Moved well.

18mths. The cleanest and soundest mover of the class. She is feminine and balanced overall, correct muzzle to skull proportions, defined stop, good rise over the skull, well set ears, showing wrinkle when alert. Good arched and elegant neck leading to well laid shoulder, strong and straight back with slight slope. Has nicely angulated hindquarters without exaggeration. Clean coming and going, mover with powerful gait, good reach in front. Strong pasterns, tight, cat like feet. BB & RBIS

2nd 43 – MCCARTHY & GETHING’S LORROSA MY HEADS BEEN TURNED TO JEDDHI

Almost 2yrs. Another well-balanced overall. Correctly balanced head overall of correct proportions. Nicely arched and strong neck, very good topline, strong loin and very nice underline. Moved with power and with good reach in front. Good depth of chest, with well sprung ribs. Small, tight feet and strong, short pasterns. RBB

20mths. Nicely balanced head, defined stop, good rise to the skull, well set ears, strong and elegant arch of neck. Well laid shoulder, good reach back of upper arm. Strong bone, short pasterns, tight feet. Nice, clean underline, well angulated rear with no exaggeration. Just a bit long in loin for balance. Moved soundly coming and going, and, in profile was very powerful with good reach in front.

2nd 37 – LOCK’S ROMANICO BACCTU CLARRICKS JW

3 ½yrs. Found her a bit masculine in head, but correct proportions with a defined stop, good rise over skull and dark, expressive eyes. Slightly arched neck, well laid shoulder, good spring and length of ribcage. Strong loin, high set tail; short and strong pasterns. A little untidy walking away but moved powerfully with good reach.
